Even in 144p can we just take a moment to rejoice in the quality of this segment from when Top gear was at it's best. The 20 seconds either side of the 7:00 mark is just so well put together, especially at the point it clicks to 407KPH.
The cinematography and post production on Top gear was, and still is the best in the motoring sector on television, anywhere in the world... One of the things that us Brits are still world class at !

I do have to say though... the video production team never lets up. And they captured that moment of exhilaration at 250 mph perfectly. and good on Capt. Slow. I am happy for him to have experienced such a thing.

The music that's playing when he's nearing top speed is an edited version of Duel of the Fates from Star Wars Ep. 1: The Phantom Menace.
At least some of it sounds very much like that in FFC's Dracula.

Whoever edited that shot of the Bugatti badge in at 7:07 is my favourite person - it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, even though I've seen this about 50 times.
I've driven about 155 mph (about 250km/h), and I thought that was insane, I can't imagine an extra 100 mph

Fastest i've driven in a car is about 260km/h in a 2006 (i think) BMW 545 v8 which had the speed limiter removed. On 2 wheels i've also hit about 260km/h but to be honest that didn't feel very nice at all.
I wonder though, if i'd get a chance to drive the Veyron in a place like James has... How far would i get before i'd say enough is enough.

The unofficial f1 speed record was set in 2006
Dawid Sopata indycar and CART can still go faster when not on an oval and optimized for speed, it is rumored that theoretically their top speed can be around 260-270

God, time flies.
You can see the poor lad get choked up as he lets off the accelerator.. For any man, that kind of experience is nothing short of a religious moment and there is no substitute for slipping behind the wheel of yet another amazing engineering feat like this. I envy Captain Slow (not so slow anymore) and look forward to seeing many more great vehicles in the future of Top Gear = )

People just don't understand exactly what Bugatti achieved with this car. Its not just tuning a car, achieving such speeds and thats the end of it. Its about designing a car that can handle those speeds without shattering itself to pieces. Engine, drivetrain, gearbox, bodywork, chassis, everything must be perfect both at slow and super highspeeds. I mean, just imagine the amount of stress that gearbox must go through.
The Veyron is the first. Its the daddy of the Hypercar. Its thanks to the Veyron that we have the the speed demons of today.

I think this footage is sped up, James May is incapable of going anywhere near this fast.

Yes but 240p isn't even SD...
You are right, but 240p is the largest size the average person's mobile device could reliably load quickly, due to the speed of wireless networks. 3G had just come out for a lot of places around the world and not many people had it, so that's why its 240p, so most people using the regular cell network to connect could. Just two years later everyone anywhere had at least 3G, if not 4G or better, if you notice their 2010 uploads are full HD, and the lowest reso is 360p.

your gears don't go high enough
low-output motorcycles that could conceivably rev/hp high enough to go to motorway speed need quite high-ratio gearing to survive motorways

Depends on what you think is "fast". The Bugatti has the highest topspeed, thats right. But there a lots of cars that are faster around a racetrack. And this is what i call fast: Best lap time on Nürburgring for instans. (sorry for my poor english, i try my best :P )

I still remember the time I saw this for the first time when I was living in Pakistan. my teacher showed me this video back in 2008. I was just 10 years old at that time and I became a fan of this show and its been more than 15 years and I still watch Top Gear and Grand Tour and all their shows. in 2008 Richard Hammond inspired me to become an engineer when I saw his show Engineering Connections on National Geographic. now I am an electrical engineer working in London England. This video is very special to me.

@coolsdon No it's not. The music track they used in the original airing of the show was the Star Wars - Duel Of The Fates, which isn't the song in this TH-cam version (at least not for me, maybe BBC has a regional setting replacing the song for anyone outside UK).

especialy since most of the cars that go faster tend to get their power from things like jet or rocket power, as direct power from the engine to the wheels can only get you going so fast before the strains on the components require tolerences so fine that the wear from one high speeed run would probably make a second run difficult.

the top speed of an F1 car doesn't really depend on the longest straight in the race. it depends on the adjustment of the wings. at monza where they use very little downforce the cars top speed easily reaches speeds over 350 km/h.

@BlueAvenue22 non metric type of measument . kilo (meaning 'hundred') metres. The metre is the foundation of this standard, Millimetres (1000th of a meter), centimetres(100th of a meter), metre, kilometres etc. a metre is approx 1.09361 yards. Its a more precise type of measurement used for scientific fields than a mile or yard. units of 10/100/1000 etc.

The Bugatti Veyron SS is the fastest road legal production car in the world. It maxed out at 267mph, went 0-62 in 2.5 seconds, making it the fastest accelerating car also. To top it off, it's the most expensive street legal production car, costing a lovely 2,400,000 USD

There's really no words that describe this sufficiently. To say the car is beautiful is blasphemous, as that word doesn't begin to cover all the combined wonder and awe of this machine. I was utterly mesmerized, and still am in shock that, imperfect as we are, our species was able to create this living god.

I remember when i was in school and one day a guy in the class bring one magazine with pictures of the new (then) veyron.The ultimate car...4 turbos,1001hp,407km/h,the price.And i thing veyron was the first road car with 1001hp,was unbelievable!!!
Notice the Wolfsburg licence plates, I think the most difficult thing was to pass the vehicle inspection.
