- Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) of Phoenix, Maryland, USA (acting as Explosives Subcontractor to Main Demolition Contractor, Renascent, Inc. of Indianapolis, Indiana) performs the preparation for and explosives felling of one (1), 166,300 square foot, 19-story, reinforced concrete office building in Evansville, Indiana on Sunday, November 21, 2021. Renascent, working for General Contractor, Barton Malow, who represented the developer, DOMO Development Company, LLC, performed environmental remediation in the structure before soft stripping the building and gutting out CDI’s specified shot floors. Renascent placed debris to support the two (2) street side basement walls which had not been designed as free-standing retaining walls. They installed cables on multiple floors of the structure, per CDI’s design, so that CDI could pull the tower away from those basement walls to remain and adjacent streets/structures.
Vibration monitoring of CDI’s felling of the 18,000-ton structure demonstrated vibration levels well below regulatory guidelines.
Hearing that bell in the end just makes it better!
hard not to feel a twinge of sadness - this was probably considered state of the art when it was built. most people find this style of architecture to be ugly, but there's beauty to be found in it - simplicity of its minimalist/modernist design patterns, and the quality of materials. was also half the skyline of evansville - lol
After following CDI’s work for the past 10 years, this was the first time I have witnessed one of their implosions live in person, and it was truly a tremendous sight to behold, and definitely crossed an item off my bucket list.
420 Main was the icon of Evansville’s skyline for many years, and I will miss it tremendously. That being said, it was great to see it receive a fitting and thrilling send off. Excellent work as always, CDI!
The drone perspective is absolutely outstanding! Flying the drone through various floors, rooms, and offices brings a renewed respect for the job at hand. I hope we’ll see even more drone views on future videos. Great video and visual display of precise demolition!!
Not surprised a huge local bank building would become an albatross. I was a bank teller in 1972-1975 and the changes since then with computers and modern tech are astonishing.
I’m always astounded by the fact you can have a skyscraper which 10 seconds later, barely fills it’s own basement.

What truly blows my mind is how a building that cost tens of millions of dollars to build can become so worthless in only a few decades that the best option is to have it demolished...

Though the same and its not the land that has a lot value since there seems to be a parking lot next to it. In Europe a building like this would get stripped and rebuilt around the structure for a new use. But I guess you have more than enough resources and building materials in the US.
@@davidemmyg Engineered obsolescence is a result of the post WW2 manufacturing boom where mass production of supply started to exceed demand. The Old National Bank building demolition should have been avoided, if for nothing else than its iconic status to Evansville. It was poorly maintained in a way that drastically decreased its lifespan, not its potential. It had the potential of lasting another fifty years.
That building was a pretty good example of mid 20th century modern architecture. It's a shame it couldn't be repurposed. It could have been converted to a fantastic high end residential tower right downtown. It was also a well built, expensive building when new. Structural concrete frame, white marble cladding on the outside...no cheap materials. As an Architect it saddens me to see some of these buildings go, knowing the great effort it takes to design and build a building, and 10 seconds to destroy it. There are plenty of terrible buildings that should be demo'd, but cities should try and save the good ones that are a positive contribution to their skylines.
I've watched this multiple times just for the interior drone footage at the beginning and all the various angles of the explosion, and the timing of the bell chime is just perfect!
I'm sure the tolling bell was not timed for, but it made for a wonderful happenstance indeed!

More precisely a long education and good mathematical calculations.
Evansville, Indiana, an amazing railroad town that started in the early days of the New York, Chicago and Saint Louis Railroad (NYC&STL) "The Nickel Plate Road", that later merged into the Norfolk and Western Railway (N&W), which itself in 1982 merged with the Southern Railway (SR), creating the Norfolk Southern Railway Corporation (NS). The NS still serves Evansville today.
Amazing accuracy dropping a building like this, these guys are so good at what they do.
I like the way it falls in upon it's own footprint, and very little lands outside of the demo area.
That's by design (by placing explosives in strategic locations to bring it down at a certain angle or direction.) So fascinating!
The building behind it looks to be 100 years old. Probably watched the demolished building being built. If only it could talk.
That has to be a '70's building. Ridiculously short life for such a structure.

This was great! I was hoping there was going to be video from inside during the implosion. The engineering that goes into bringing such tall buildings down within their own footprint is absolutely astounding.
Wow! I was there at the grand opening when they dropped balloons with prize certificates inside. Its wild to see it come down...and a reminder of just how old I am.

I'm glad to watch my favorite implosion building on TH-cam Channel.
I thought it was interesting in the first shot of the building coming down and in a later shot that a lone church bell started ringing almost as if to morn the passing of the building coming down. Great work as always, CDI. I was in person when CDI took down the Century Link Building in Overland Park, KS.

The interior shots at the beginning were great!! Wish there was a schedule of your upcoming jobs. Would love to see one in person. Evansville is only a couple of hours from me and would have made the drive over had I known.

It was a big day when the executive got that corner office . And think of all the pots of coffee that were made and cops brought by secretaries to their bosses all the office romances that happened , it was the plan of Manny a young lady to go to work in an office and land a husband

They use PETN or RDX in copper tubes to cut the steel I-beams and girders-Munro-effect cutting stream charges, like the military uses against armor. Then-about ten seconds later-they set off old-fashioned dynamite charges in pre-drilled holes in the concrete support columns. The former is so the building comes down neatly, the latter takes out the "Bones" so it actually falls. They often use non-electric fuses...that IS; high explosive molded into a "fuse" which is set off by a primer. This fuse "burns" at about 20,000 meters/second.
If you slow the video down and pay close attention, you can see how the implosion happens in two phases. First, there's a bunch of little explosions from the bottom to the top. Then, the dynamite is set off, from one end to the other (implosion from the center is actually Rare.) They seem to blast the columns in the lower floors, and sometimes a higher floor closer to the top. Normally, the floors where the dynamite is placed have outside barriers to prevent fragments from hitting the public. The columns themselves are also wrapped.
There have been Tragedies when this precaution was not taken.
There is extensive prep work (often several months) where they have a wheeled jackhammer take out the inside walls, and prep the elevator and stair shafts for the coming blast. Otherwise the building may not fall cleanly (or may even stay UP!) Sometimes, cables are attached to the columns, to guide their fall. It's a bit like felling trees.
Awesome video - the building imploded and squatted down on itself - the solitary bell tolling at the end makes for a most excellent tribute to the end of the building's life. 2 thumbs up!

Completed in 1971, at 18 stories it was the tallest building in Evansville, Indiana, and for 120 miles. It will be replaced by a four story retail/apartment complex. Earlier plans that would have renovated the existing building for retail/apartment use fell through as uneconomic.

Yeehaw! A different Indiana courthouse in the background and with the same bell tone as our similar courthouse. Kinda brings it home. I was wondering if CDI was to take on 420 Main, yep and in style! The master blasters! Interesting seeing shipping containers stacked 3 high to protect glass storefronts just across the street from the high rise. I am wondering how effective that prep was.
It's incredible that it can be done with such precision, that you can take down something this size in such a built-up area without damaging the surroundings.

How much of the building debris can be separated and recycled? Like the metal frames for the ceiling panels. Able to separate those or are will they be unrecoverable and headed to the landfill along with the ceiling panels. I wish that we could reuse or recover more.

I have a question about the implosions, and I would prefer an answer from TLG, if possible. At fire time, what are the first consecutive blast rounds that go off, and then like 2 seconds of silence, and then the final blasts that bring the building down? I've watched some documentaries on implosions, but can't recall an explanation of the blasts that bring it down. Thank you!
The first blasts are to weaken the main structure.
Rudy Littlewolf, while I am just making a guess here, it would be that all those initial blasts are intended to sever various load-bearing or stabilizing parts of the structure, and then the final blasts are the coup de grace that get part of the structure falling so the previously damaged parts will then go. I hope some person with more knowledge will correct me or add more information.

Have you watched "Dynamite Dynasty"? That's an old documentary on the Louizeaux's that has an explanation of the different types of charges they use.
First sequence is to decrease the strength of the pillar and structure setting the movement that it will follow with the second sequence.
Sad. My father set the verticals on the exterior. Sat on the edge and guided them in place by hand.
