What a beautiful tour of the city I was born in Jenny. I am glad you had a wonderful time and your love for Jane Austens literature shone through. The Cathedral is stunning with the longest nave in the country and so much history to explore. I have never done a tour of the school, as you know it is open at limited times due term periods, so I must try and rectify that at some point. One of its highlights is to follow the river Itchen through the city and out into the water meadows that surround the city and over to the old Bishops Palace - Wolvesley Castle, which again has so much history.
The cathedral was amazing and you can see why they need to charge to enter. The cost of maintaining it must be horrendous. A lovely and well-put-together journey. Thank you.
Lovely film as usual Jenny. I've been to Winchester twice but you explored way more than I did. I really didn't see as much as I should have. Maybe I'll go back in December for the Christmas market. I've not been there for over a decade. Cheers and best wishes. Hope you can recover properly now that you are back home✌️🥂
Hey Lyndon, nice to read from you. 😀 No, you are doing it just right. It is better not to overload a visit with sightseeing or else, it is less easy to soak in the atmosphere. I was 4 days in Winchester in total and were using two half days for sightseeing. This way, I can really dive in and appreciate what I am seeing. Much love to you. Amazing for me to think you are writing to me from London.
@@jenniferk6632You're welcome Jenny. Oh you were in Winchester for 4 days. That's a nice amount of time to be able to explore the town. I only had a few hours both times. The clocks change in two weeks, so I'll be going into cental London from where I live (Banstead) more from now on. I prefer walking around London where it's darker in the evenings 😊 Best wishes to you Jenny ❤.
@@jenniferk6632 Yeah I love London all lit up from about 5.00 pm onwards, especially places like Tower Bridge/Tower of London, places are less packed (except around Christmas time) and just feels less touristy. Of course, London had lots of tourists year round but it just 'feels' less so in autumn and winter. And of course, the pubs I like have fires lit in the winter, so it's great on a dark and stormy late afternoon or evening to go into them. Very cosy, like the pub you went into in Winchester. 😊
What an amazing time you had at Winchester. I think you got quite emotional standing at the foot of a literary giant. My hubby's relative William Wickham was a bishop of Winchester in the late 1500's . Thank you for taking us on your travel around this beautiful city.
Was he related to William Wykeham, the founder of Winchester college? 😀 Really? That would be so amazing... or is it a different William Wickham? Thank you for telling me ❤️ Have a beautiful day
@@jenniferk6632 To be honest I am not sure, although Wykeham and Wickham surnames are interchangeable. The founder of the college was born earlier than my Wickham but interestingly around the same area.
A "Jane Austin" fan, Eh, Jennifer? you and me both, as well as my late wife! Another lovely video. (I've never been to Winchester, but my late wife had many years ago).(In answer to your question, yes, it makes perfect sense!).
The desks you see used as tables in the Wykeham Arms come from the college and were in use there in the 1970s. The walk to the top of St Catharine's Hill is worth the effort if you have the time.
Winchester is lovely, I’ve been a couple of times, both at Christmas, and the Christmas markets are great - although probably not up to the standard of the German ones! 😂
Are German christmas market extraordinary? 😂 I don't have a comparisson, yet, it is the first time I will be away from home during the christmas season this year... hopefully I will be able to compare them to the French ones, then... Thank you for coming along again, Pete 😀 ❤️
Your love and connection to Jane Austin and the places she had lived and visited came through without words as a connection to us. As the poet said: ' The lips of time leech to the fountain head; Love drips and gathers, but the fallen blood Shall calm her sores. And I am dumb to tell a weather's wind How time has ticked a heaven round the stars. And I am dumb to tell the lover's tomb How at my sheet goes the same crooked worm.'
I think that opposite to where Jane Austen lodged in Winchester there were shops. i have seen some old photos and think that was the case. The museum has some very interesting items and photos, if you are in the area again.
Hello again Jenny, that was a lovely video, most enjoyable. You may not know, but Winchester has a strong link to Germany from early medieval times. King Aethelstan, grandson of Alfred the Great and King of Wessex, wished to form an Alliance with Otto the Great of Germany, both being Saxon kingdoms. To achieve this, he sent his sister, Edith, to Otto as a bride (Edith was born and lived in or near Winchester). Edith, apparently, was very beautiful and intelligent and Otto fell very much in love with her. She also made an excellent impression on the German court. She remains buried in Magdeburg cathedral. The story is quite a long one which you may like to investigate yourself. Did you manage to see King Arthur's Round Table? I'm so glad you're continuing to enjoy your stay. Hope the weather stays kind to you.❤
Oh, what an interesting Story, thank you ❤️. Well, in the original footage I took, I was mentioning that I was planning on going to see King Arthur's table. My plan was it to do that after the college to. However, my fatigue prevented me for the college tour was so beautiful and intense that I just didn't manage and had to cancel that plan. It seems, at any place, I always have to leave something out... but as always, I am thankful about what I got to see and experience and do not focus on what I missed... ❤️ I am happy you enjoyed it, again. Greetings to Australia 😀
@jenniferk6632 I enjoyed it very much as I have never been there. Thanks again. BTW, one of your commenter recommended you to pay a visit to Rye while you're down that way. I heartily endorse that and also visit nearby Winchelsea which is much quieter (Rye can get a bit crowded sometimes). I'm starting to laugh now because we'll have you frantically criss-crossing the country soon! 😉
@@sirdudleynightshade8747 hehe... yea, well, all this will have to wait for I arrived back in Germany 2 days ago and after curing my sprained ankle, will get my new Microcamper ready to spend the winter in France, Spain and Portugal... I will probably be back in England next spring. Hope, you will follow along in Europe's south, as well, though 😀
All that breathtaking medieval beauty, imagined by great minds, and fashioned by highly-skilled hands - all without the aid of computers, and modern machinery. And then look at what WE - with all OUR technological advantages - had to offer future generations to mark the Millenium: a wonky bridge across the Thames, and an upturned Tupperware bowl! What went wrong there (I make no mention of that concrete monstrosity on the South Bank)?

Several aspects: the amusing dialogues, that she focussed on the interaction of the people and not on pagelong landscape description, the accurate, often slightly ironic and witty depiction of society of that time, not too much drama, always a happy ending ( I love happy endings) and of course her elegant and sophistocated use of the language ❤️

Still Part of me think it's Wrong for us to pay to enter a Cathedral a Place of Religious belief. Although I know how expensive the upkeep of these beautiful Buildings are. I've done the Same in York Minster .
Yes, I understand there is a difference between entering a cathedral to practice your religion or as tourists. I am just thinking that I feel sorry for people who would like to go and experience culture but cannot for the entrance fees are too high.
@jenniferk6632 Without getting into it to deep .because I was Really only interested about the Stone Masonry and all the other Crafts .But didn't Jesus kick over the Table of the Money Lenders in the Temple ? .
Well, I must admit that I was a little astonished for I never had to pay for any grand cathedrals neither in Germany, France or Spain but then, maybe the system works differently in England? I know that in Germany, we automatically pay a tax for church... anyhow, the experience was well worth the money and I would gladly pay for it, again. 🙂

I prefer walking around London where it's darker in the evenings 😊
Best wishes to you Jenny ❤.
Oh really? Why do you prefer it in the dark? Because of all the City lights?
@@jenniferk6632 Yeah I love London all lit up from about 5.00 pm onwards, especially places like Tower Bridge/Tower of London, places are less packed (except around Christmas time) and just feels less touristy. Of course, London had lots of tourists year round but it just 'feels' less so in autumn and winter. And of course, the pubs I like have fires lit in the winter, so it's great on a dark and stormy late afternoon or evening to go into them. Very cosy, like the pub you went into in Winchester. 😊
@lyndoncmp5751 ahh, I can picture this as if taken from a movie scene... beautiful. Enjoy it 😀

@smythharris2635 oh, thank you... will have to check it out...
@@dafadowndilly8919 yes, and also bishop of Winchester... really interesting coincindence...
great vlog winchester is such a nice town😃
Thank you, and yes, it surely is... Thank you for coming along and letting me know ❤️ Have a wonderful evening
Really good video Jennifer!
Thank you very much and enjoy your evening ❤️
What a lovely video Jenny 😊❤.
Thank you, Janet. Happy you enjoyed it, again. Have a beautiful sunday ❤️
A "Jane Austin" fan, Eh, Jennifer? you and me both, as well as my late wife! Another lovely video. (I've never been to Winchester, but my late wife had many years ago).(In answer to your question, yes, it makes perfect sense!).
❤️ Thank you for understanding 😀 and yes... have been a J.A. Fan ever since my early 20s...
Have a beautiful sunday
what a lovely lady.
Thank you, Brian ❤️ Have a beautiful sunday
The desks you see used as tables in the Wykeham Arms come from the college and were in use there in the 1970s. The walk to the top of St Catharine's Hill is worth the effort if you have the time.
Oh wow, thank you for this information ❤️ I am not in Winchester anymore but will keep it in mind for another time 😀
Danke!
Dankeschön Sigi ❤️
Winchester is lovely, I’ve been a couple of times, both at Christmas, and the Christmas markets are great - although probably not up to the standard of the German ones! 😂
Are German christmas market extraordinary? 😂 I don't have a comparisson, yet, it is the first time I will be away from home during the christmas season this year... hopefully I will be able to compare them to the French ones, then... Thank you for coming along again, Pete 😀 ❤️
Your love and connection to Jane Austin and the places she had lived and visited came through without words as a connection to us.
As the poet said:
' The lips of time leech to the fountain head;
Love drips and gathers, but the fallen blood
Shall calm her sores.
And I am dumb to tell a weather's wind
How time has ticked a heaven round the stars.
And I am dumb to tell the lover's tomb
How at my sheet goes the same crooked worm.'
Beautiful... I adore poetry... Thank you so much for sharing ❤️ Have a lovely evening
You should have tried the Cathedral cafe, good food and lovely courtyard setting.
Oh yes, I saw its sign but sadly it had just closed when I came out of the cathedral...
I think that opposite to where Jane Austen lodged in Winchester there were shops. i have seen some old photos and think that was the case. The museum has some very interesting items and photos, if you are in the area again.
Oh, thank you so much for telling me 😀 it completes the picture... Have a beautiful evening ❤️
Nice video .
Thank you Steve ❤️ Have a beautiful evening
@jenniferk6632 How lucky you are! Have a wonderful time and look after that ankle!
@@sirdudleynightshade8747 I will, thank you 😀
Not many city’s in England where a trout rises in its centre. I remain dead impressed by Winchester
❤️
All that breathtaking medieval beauty, imagined by great minds, and fashioned by highly-skilled hands - all without the aid of computers, and modern machinery. And then look at what WE - with all OUR technological advantages - had to offer future generations to mark the Millenium: a wonky bridge across the Thames, and an upturned Tupperware bowl! What went wrong there (I make no mention of that concrete monstrosity on the South Bank)?
😀 I understand what you are saying. I always wonder myself how the architecture of ancient times can be so extraordinary amazing...
Jennifer; just admit, you Love England ((UK) 💋
Hehe... is this obvious, then... 😀😃😃
Does Brighton come after this?
Yes, it does... 😀
Just Curious if your German Friends react!
In parts but then mainly via WhatsApp 😀... the funny thing is that at times I ask if they have watched and they reply: yes, I also hit the like button... obviously, I cannot see who it is liking my videos, youtube is only giving me numbers. That is why I love it so much to read your comments...
Hello Jennifer, What drew you to Jane Austin in the first place?
Several aspects: the amusing dialogues, that she focussed on the interaction of the people and not on pagelong landscape description, the accurate, often slightly ironic and witty depiction of society of that time, not too much drama, always a happy ending ( I love happy endings) and of course her elegant and sophistocated use of the language ❤️
There's a story about how Winchester Cathedral nearly collapsed in the early 20th century and how it was saved by the diver William Walker.
I heard about that... so amazing 😀
I guess you were having a spiritual moment
Oh, so you know the feeling then? I have those a lot when I am travelling alone... this is what I love about it ❤️
@jenniferk6632 it's a wonderful feeling to fall in love with a place or thing especially when it's unexpected, I live in Wiltshire which isn't too far from Winchester I have never been but you have inspired me to go there❣️
@rjart4 oh, how wonderful... Tell me how you liked it, will you? 😀
Bless you, if I remember!!😄
Winchester was never 'capital of England' only of Wessex. When the Wessex kings became kings of England the capital became London.
Ah... Thank you for this more detailed information. 😀
I. Wonder if you missed the story of the diver who saved the cathedral.
Hm, I think I read about him... amazing story. 😀
@jenniferk6632 Without getting into it to deep .because I was Really only interested about the Stone Masonry and all the other Crafts .But didn't Jesus kick over the Table of the Money Lenders in the Temple ? .
@MaxwellMoore-d1u indeed 😀
Don’t pay to enter British cathedrals, just tell them that you need to pray
Good advice, thank you... I think I would just really feel bad taking all that footage, then... 🙂
Strange advice when consider the sheer cost of maintaining these magnificent structures. Or maybe you think everything should be free?
Well, I must admit that I was a little astonished for I never had to pay for any grand cathedrals neither in Germany, France or Spain but then, maybe the system works differently in England? I know that in Germany, we automatically pay a tax for church... anyhow, the experience was well worth the money and I would gladly pay for it, again. 🙂
