I just built a gravel bike with a corner bar. I wanted to run components I already had from a mountain bike that I cannibalized to keep the whole build cheap so this was my best option.
So far I've been very happy. I will say that a SRAM Eagle shifter works really well. My thumb is right there for both shifts. Personally, I dislike the thumb only shifting of Eagle shift levers, but on the corner bar it just works for me.
On singletrack I have handling confidence and on long climbs or road sections I've got multiple hand positions for comfort. I'm so far very impressed. I'm contemplating putting some on one of my mountain bikes.

yeah, before seeing this bar I was planning to buy a wide bullhorn bar with bar end shifters, but now I can just use this bar and even put hydraulic brakes. But I think Surly should have make this front horns longer to be able to put hands on it for resting position.

@@justdude8115 If the horns are the same diameter as the tips, which seems to be the case, a Controltech Terminator bar end extension should fit for an extra 20mm.

I’ve ridden drop bars off road since the 80’s (yeah, I’m old) Been running hydraulic brakes on my fat bike which pretty much locked me in to a flat bar until now. I just installed a set of these on my fatty, only put a short ride on them but I’m liking them so far. Thanks for the thorough introduction Neil.

Cool! I'm a mechanic at a bike shop and one of our great customers is going to have us build up a Trek 1120 with these handlebars so I was so happy to see that you had a great review on them! Cool! Now I have some ideas to share with my customer! I also have an 1120 and I love drop bars and maybe someday I'll give these bars a try! Again, thanks for the review and ideas for how to set them up!

  • @yoshinakabys
    @yoshinakabys 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

That’s very simple but quite an invention. I did need to get GRX shifter/levers, rear derailleur, brakeset, all hoses/cables, dropper lever, and handlebars so to convert an MTB to gravel bike, which cost me $500 range. I actually wondered why there’s no option of dropbar with D22.2mm when I was planning how to convert mine. Now we don’t bother to change to road/gravel groupset or Tanpan or barend shifter. Simplest, yet smartest solutions(and cheapest).

6:00 in order to fully imitate the pose of the hood, it is necessary that the authors-developers of the bar lengthen the handles where the hood is, so that it is convenient to put your hands like on the hoods of a standard drop bar.

My Canyon pathlite hybrid which already does the job as a gravel bike and as a mountain bike with its current flat-bar will become the ultimate gravel bike with these corner bars, bravo to Surly who saves me money on not buying an N+1 bicycle.

  • @deanjackson3097

I have a triathlon background so aero and drops have always been my preference. Bought a MTB to have a crack and I simply don't like flat bars as I seem to lack control and find them twitchy and uncomfortable on my aging wrists.
In recent years I have moved to primarily a gravel bike with drops and love it even on single track, I find I have much more control with drops. I've thought about an MTB drop bar conversion but everything I read indicates it's potentially expensive and the geometry is a struggle.
So I was going to sell my MTB [dual suspension] but now I pulling it from the shop and buying a Surly Corner Bars, excited!

I just used a holland handlebar and turned it upside down, It has probably kind of a similar feeling and its cheap because they are everywhere. I have a small drop which is enough for bikepacking. The hoods are my combo mtb brake and shiftlevers, fortunately they have a hand friendly design so I can grab them, cushioned them with some carpet stopper and wrapped bar tape over.

Hmm interesting! I've never really rode drops for any length of time, but have been interested in trying some. Swapping controls out was what kept me from trying, though, so I might give these a go! I've been playing with a number of different "comfort" bars over the last couple of years. Jones Loop, Surly Open, and even some Renthal Moto bars I had laying around from my ATV days because it has similar rise and sweep to Tumbleweed's Persuader bars.

I bought the wider version (54cm) and changed all the cables to be much longer so that I can fit more bags on the bar. I just completed a 190km bikepacking weekend with the bars and loved the new position. I also got a shorter stem with a slight rise versus the longer flat stem I had with the flat bars. You can see a short on my channel that shows the bike before and after. ❤

I sold my moloko. Just don't like that much sweep on a "flat" bar. Less than about 30 deg (flat), or greater than about 75 (gravel drop). In between is not for me. And, the horns were too close together and caused wrist pain when caught having to stand up while on them. I could see the corner bar being a good option in my case.

if you put bar ends on the nubs wouldn't you have a great aero position + a good place to rest your arms? kinda like a watered down version of the TT arms that stick out in the middle. If this bar is meant to emulate drop bars maybe it could emulate that too on top of everything else.
Right now I do something similar to this on bullhorn bars, using MTB controls and I'm turning into a hybrid gravel bike. I will be upgrading to these corner bars when I'm finished upgrading the rest of the gearset.

I have a 2011 aluminum rim brake cross bike that will need wider wheels and lower gearing and I have a 2021 all-rounder modern carbon hardtail with a flat bar. I'm thinking about using the hardtail over to cross bike but the flat bar is the deal killer. This might be a great option if it's actually comfortable for 4-hour rides. How's the reach compared to a flat bar? Do you find yourself needing to compensate with a shorter stem?

Great question, I had a 60mm stem on this bike, if I went to a 50mm, I think that would secure a more upright position, and a better overall fit. The shorter the stem, the more twitchy, so thats something to keep in mind.

@@BIKEPACKINGcom nice, thanks for the quick reply. All I have to do now is wait until it officially gets released.

Would you recomend me this for build a gravel bike? i don't have any componet rigth now so the only advantage i can see is that it allowss me to use hydraulic brakes or even cheap tourney mtb equipment if i'm short of money.

Any thoughts on adding this to a Cutthroat? I prefer the feel of flat bars and these seem to move towards that dynamic without fully losing drops. Thanks

hi, just wondering what sized corner bar you used in the video and what is recommended for what purpose. thanks

I was thinking maybe if I got this, I would have extended the nubs part of the bar with regular flat bar extenders as this is my favourite position to ride. Would this work?

what do you think when you use it, is it more like using drop bar in hood position or like using drop bar in drop position ?

I had contemplated getting this bar to replace a flared drop I had on my “gravel” bike but went to the surly Molko bar instead. There were a couple of reasons; more hand positions and a slightly less wider bar. Where I ride many of the bike trails, paths are gated and I can barely get through these gates even with Molko bar.
Are there bike gates on bike paths where you live that requires bike yoga to get through?

  • @furdstahmania

Maybe Surly could introduce a bar that has an actual drop bar for this? The way it looks is that it's not really a drop bar, it's an angled flat bar. In the sense that the bars are connected at an angle but the bars are still straight.
Would a curve in the drops help with this? But I could imagine it having issues with the placement of the brakes and gear levers.

Where, oh where, does one get those lovely bar end plugs? Plugs are EXTREMELY important for prevent core sampling of various parts of one’s body. Screw in plugs are much more reliable that bash-in ones.
The aero position on Moloko bars is excellent, even on gravel road downhills (Wisconsin basin). The nobs, or bar ends, do a great job of preventing forward pitching when one goes over a sudden rock or pothole, unlike a mere placement of hands or elbows without hooking anything on the top bar (even on pavement an excellent national team roadie found this out the hard way).

Those bar ends come with the Lizard Skin bar tape, they are really nice because they actually screw in. Many brands sell those screw in bar plugs separately, I'm sure your local bike shop has some.

@@BIKEPACKINGcom thanks. I’ll check Lizard locally. But Quality, separate, bar end plugs are very hard to find locally (CN), and even online (at least I haven’t found them). Quality = metal, screw, bit wider flange width to hold tape or very wide flange width to hold pogies in place. And for Moloko etc. you need 4, not 2.

Did you find you wanted to change the stem length compared to what you would use with your flat bar setup?

Going back to single track real quick. Is it something you would ride on the reg on single track? I live in PA, where you can traverse over a lot on dirt roads and single tracks to make for longer rides, but I’m a gravel curious mountain biker through and through.
My trails aren’t anywhere like out west. They are super chunky, primitive, with quick ascends/descends. Would this be limiting to my xc love?
