I drove an 18 wheeler for 24 years. This song helped me make up my mind to do something else. I went straight to a commercial fishing boat and sometimes spent weeks at sea. The point is that if one has the wanderlust or craves adventure no song will make you stop, but it will remind you of how lonely you are. I love this song!
I had a chance to meet Mel me and him just stood there and talked for probably 15 or 20 minutes about everything from diesel fuel prices to politics he was just as down to earth as his music really good guy
Reading all the comments reminds me how music is the thread that ties us together. The almighty sure knew what he was doing when he gave us the gift of music!
Oh man! It's been a long time since I heard this song. I used to sing along with this song back when I was ten years old, driving in my parents station wagon, listening to AM radio. When I die, I want to be born in 1960, so I can do it all over again. Hearing rap in what's being called country today, is the last straw for me. Country Music producers today, have no clue what true Country music is.
You, Got that Right !! I'm 49, & I ABSOLUTELY, cant Image Not knowing Good Music like this & Everything Country & Rock that's Pre - 1988, Cause with introduction of Rap it seemed like FROM that point foward Everything Music Wise Has Sucked !! How Foolish I was to think Rap was a Fad , I'm Glad I was born in a time of Great Rock & Country MUSIC, but its pretty Sad to see or Rather hear it Die on the Vine ESPECIALLY due to Rap . Thanks TH-cam, & for all the folks who Upload such Greats that We, can listen to anytime & Not be forced to listen to Current day Crap..
I'm an '61 model. AND DAMN PROUD OF IT! Right on the edge of baby boomer and whatever else. If I could go back and be born any year in the 20th century, I would still go with '61. I remember the music of the summer of love. Of people flocking to record stores for the latest release. I went to school in the Civil rights area with bussing. There were very few instances between races at school, but some. I heard the BEST MUSIC right on my portable 8 track player. We all grew up early on pledging allegiance to the flag, having a morning devotional. We ALL grew up with morals and values instilled in us from our parents. And they weren't so different between the races. We weren't rich in money, but those days were a great treasure. A great time to live and grow up. I wish all kids could grow up in that time. With parents that kept an eye on everyone's kids. I fear those halcyon days are gone forever. If things continue to decline, they will never be experienced by any children, anywhere. This new world order bullshit has to be stopped at ALL COSTS!! PLEASE, FEAR LORD, HAVE MERCY ON US AND PROTECT US FROM THE EVILS!!!
RIP Mr. Mel Tillis, you'll be truly missed, that's for sure. We Love you and your music all together. You're also funny when you go to tell a story or a joke. I thank God for giving me the chance back in 1986 or 1987 to see you in concert at the Bakersfield Fair. You were great, My Dad and I had enjoyed hearing and seeing you in person. Again, you rest in the arms of Jesus.
Money, if you don’t pay the radio empire at least one million dollars they won’t play it, on the other hand if it sounds like horse shit and you pay the one man that owns all the stations now . They will. When Clinton deregulated radio by the FCC now one man can own as many as he wants. So control the competition.
When I was stationed at Ft Carson in the late 70s, I would be listening to this on my office radio. I always had a pot of coffee brewing for the NCOs and the privates whenever they'd cop a squat and chill. Most of them were from the south. Only one was from California and he'd always give a thumbs up when this song was played. Melinda Maybruck Ortega St Augustine, Florida
🌟👑🌟GOD BLESS!!!!! YOU. MR. MEL. IN. PEACE mr. Mel Tillis God bless you🌹🌹🌹
Wow! That’s all I can say is “Wow!” I haven’t heard that song in ages and ages since I was a little boy! I heard another song last night, “Does your Mother Know?” This is by Aba. I think of the good times I had as a little boy, going to visit my aunts in various places, Erie and Saint Marys Pennsylvania, going to my dad’s hunting friend’s camp, and playing in our backyard hearing these great songs! I say that with an exclamation because I am so excited to be able to pull these great songs up on youtube. Keep the great songs coming.
But there is a California so pretty to see so if you think there's no dark green grass and a sky fool of color in the north California when the sun is going down on our mountain in the early evening you know god said there is a California cause he blessed us with a view. Pray for our loved ones and that are gone help us live with our loss amen
Oh wow, I haven't heard this song in decades and just happened to stumble across it! I loved it when I was a kid, but I didn't really listen to all the lyrics and put together what he was trying to say. I was always confused because I thought he was literally denying the existence of California.
Gene, did you also work with Ellie Dylan? Even though I lived in Pennsylvania, I was able to pick up WMAQ in the evenings. I remember the " WMAQ is gonna make me rich " contest. Even remember the phone number 591-1500, and later changed to 591-4000. I used ti listen to Ellie and then Fred on the overnights. great memories! '
680 WNYR out of Rochester back in 1978. The slogan was "Winner 68", I remember it well. It would be another seven years until Rochester got FM country, First around '85-'86 with WZKC which only lasted a year. The following year WBEE came town and is still there as far as I know.
Jesus H. Christ on the Grapevine grade on an 18-wheeler, brakes gone. This is what you country hayseeds pass for a Cali song? THIS crap? Say what you will about L.A., but if you're going to go country, at the very least put some Bakersfield into it.
Bill Butler It never was a Cali song its a country song taking about California. Now for the Bakersfield sound only Tommy Collins, Buck Owens, old Merle and Dwight Yoakam could do that. Also try your brakes going out going down El Cajon. At least Grapevine has a long straightway at the end and more than 1 runway ramp.

It's the 1% who controls every word you hear be it said or sung now. There was a window of individuality but it closed.

I remember hearin' this on WMAQ-AM, back in '78. Mel sang like a Britisher, when he dropped his r's, after the vowel sounds.
Dave Wollenberg -- WMAQ's gonna make me rich! :) I worked with Fred Sanders and Bob "The Polish Cowboy" Tracy for eight years.
Gene Davis I think I mightve heard you on the Interstate Radio network overnight show, when it was broadcast on WAUR-AM.
Dave Wollenberg -- Yezzir!
