Mel Tillis was a gentleman thru and thru besides having a golden voice. Being a stutterer myself at times severe, I thought I’d write to him and ask him if his stutter bothered him or was he used to it as his trade mark. I never thought he’d have the time to answer. Well I received a 2 page handwritten response in which he told me about the up hill battle in the beginning because of his stutter. He went into some detail about how mean people can be - but he made it because his talent as a singer shown through. He really was a phenomenal example of the possibilities even with that affliction that has affected millions of people some of whom hide it well and some that can’t. Thank you Mel and I for one will miss you ever so much and thanks for the pep talk. A truly wonderful and talented man.
@@wizzardofpaws2420 you are correct. Singing erases stuttering but unfortunately you cannot sing your way thru life. Watch the movie Every Which Way But Loose He’s in it singing in a bar one of his most famous tunes beautifully. Then he has to introduce Sandra Locke and at first there’s a long pause and then he got it out. Really cute. He and Eastwood were friends I gather And the second tune, he sang in the movie was Coca-Cola cowboy when they got to the part where the words go he’s got an Eastwood smile and Robert Redford hair. They changed the words so it went something like he has a real nice smile and Robert Redford hair, I guess at the request of Clint. The letter that I received from Mel was not a boiler plate computerized print out, but it was a handwritten letter two pages in which he was truly thankful to talk to fellows stutter in the letter. He describes how when he auditioned as a newcomer he was brushed off with a thank younext and never given a chance until somehow, he managed to talk his way into it, probably by his singing, which which is truly remarkable
My goodness! Another very underrated country singer, singing only the way well a real country music singer. I will keep listening to this icon among other icons…Damn I miss those days😢😢😢
I was 6 years old in 1979. I was born here in Tucson and my parents and I moved to San Manuel in the late summer of 1978. I heard this song on an eight track tape that my mom taped a bunch of songs from a record. I think that his music and his memories will live on forever. His daughter Pam Tillis put out a lot of great music too. She is really great too
The best Classic Country music songs/Singers can only be heard on CDs, nuthin's Country today, haven't listened to Country music for 2 decades, my CDs are my life saver, George, Tammy, Conway, Buck, etc. are holding Classic Country for me. George said, "Who's Gonna Take Their Place?", nuthin and never, future is bleak.
This song has a very deep meaning... Songs from back in the day were written when feelings were real, and Life was real.. Not like today, fake words, fake feelings and no compassion for each other These days ARE almost gone forever I miss them!!!
I was fourteen in 1979 too and grew up 100 miles from Chicago. We visited AZ over the 1978 Xmas holiday and did drive down to Tucson. My dad was stationed there in WW2. I didn't listen to country music at that time and today I just ran across an old radio survey from the late winter of 1979 and am hearing this song for the first time!
I was raised on 70's country music, what an incredible era of music! Of all the wonderful songs in that genre, this song is easily one of my favorites, what a smooth, wonderful tune!
Ugh! RIP Mel! This is my all time favorite Country song, Mel sang at the Palomino Club bar in Clint Eastwood's classic movie "Every Which Way But Loose". We'll miss you, Mel! The old ways are almost gone for good....
This really shows how great Mel’s voice and versatility really was. He was loved by everyone. Countrypolitan. I was just thinking about my lady and how she was everything a man like me could ever dream of, everything, but she died from breast cancer after 16 years of something most of my friends haven’t had 16 days of. It was real true love from God.
My Group of N.C. Guys love M-Mel so much that we have an Annual M-Mel Tillis Golf Invitational at N. Myrtle Beach SC now for 31 years! Love us some M-Mel!!!!!!!!!
When I was thirteen, I used to sit between my parents while we drove down the road in our station wagon. When KRAM would play this song, I would sing along with it. I grew up on all the Country Gold of that era. I still sing it at karaoke bars here in Vegas. People love it. I get a lot of handshakes and slaps on the back when I finish singing the old greats.
Ol Mel passed away today. Had to play this one for him because it was my favorite Tillis record. Takes me back to my Uncle Buddy's house -- listening to his portable radio on a windowsill, with the Birmingham afternoon sun shining through the kitchen, where we drank many a beer together...RIP Mel. Say hello to my Uncle Buddy...
I was playing an AM station in my dad's 2014 F350 while hauling hay, and this song came on. My dad popped in at the same moment and said, "You're going oldy goldy". I couldn't find it on Apple Music, but that's what TH-cam is for.
Mel Tillis was the man i remember when he sang this song in Any Which Way but Loose, he was a good joke teller to, you will never be forgotten rest in peace
Something about this tune....... really takes you back....... Funny thing, there were people back in the day trashed this sound as too smooth, countrypolitan... the strings and all that. But listen to it today, it sounds mighty fine. Imagine it coming out of a radio today...???!!!!
Can you imagine how Country will sound in 30 years? Maybe straight techno or something, and that might even make today's Country sound real good. I actually don't know how Country can get any worse from here, but we'll find out in about 5 years time. Yes, this song does have some Pop influence; but unlike Today's Country, it's just the perfect blend of Country and Pop elements.
