  • 315 meters long, 65 meters high, weighing 80,000 tones and capable of transporting more than 7,000 people, the Meraviglia is the ultimate cruise ship. But how was she built ?
    We followed her development at the St. Nazaire construction site, a building ground for the world’s biggest vessels. There more than 2,500 men working day and night, using the latest technological developments to lessen the environmental impact.
    -
    The Suez Canal. The Paris Metro. Strasbourg Cathedral. These masterpieces of constructions redefined what was possible at the time, using the latest technologies and developments. In this five part series, we reveal how five great monuments were designed and constructed.

    I wouldn't think being on a ship that large would feel like you're on a cruise. It would be like being on land, in a huge hotel.

    I went on a cruise only twice in my life. The first about 15 years ago, and the second just this year. The difference in technology is quite evident. I was very surprised that there was ZERO engine hum on the new ships. I did not even know we left the port until I walked out and saw the sea rushing by below

    30 seconds in ‘weight of eighty thousand tons’. Sure hope he doesn’t mean the usual ship measurement of ‘gt’ which is closer to saying volume. I might wrong but had to nitpick. Excited to watch the rest though 😀.

      @Whywouldyounot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tbh it is kinda confusing that its called gross tons. Sounds like a measurement of weight to the untrained eye (which is in my experience 95 percent of journalists writing about ships)

    The steel plates of the ship are welded NOT soldered! OOPS!
    Also any vessel that exceds 100 feet or 30.48 meters is called a ship. Earlier in the video he called it a boat and later a ship.
    It's not hard to critique the video when the description is so bad.

      The QM2's keel was laid down on 4 July 2002, in the construction dock at Saint-Nazaire, France, with the hull number G32. Approximately 3,000 craftsmen spent around eight million working hours on the ship, and around 20,000 people were directly or indirectly involved in her design, construction, and fitting out.

    Aahh, yeah, so the ship designers and builders here brag about 'being green', being mindful of all the aspects where a gigantic ship can be harmful to the environment. Pretty much heard that throughout this whole video. But why are they not including their responsibility to the environment when the usefulness of the vessel has expired and it is time to scrap it. They have created this monstrosity, they should be responsible for the orderly and responsible recycling of the ship. Along with the owners/operators, these designers and builders should have the same concern for our planet earth as they claim they do when trying to impress you and sell you another ticket, so they can keep building ships and profiting from the use of the planets oceans and shores.
    This can surely be done in a profitable way considering the value of new raw materials verses existing recycled materials.
    Rather than that, we see our planet's shores being wasted away and pollutants leaching into open waters at locations like Alang. Ship breaking on the ocean's edge, where no labor laws, no ecological laws allow these criminal businessmen to pay top dollar for these retired ships as well as tankers and cargo ships. Ship owners flock to these places that pay top dollar for these vessels, they can cause they spend ZERO dollars on doing it the right way. It won't ever change unless the ship owners are held responsible for where their polluted structure ends up when they don't want it anymore.

    And now the cruise industry is reeling due to the cvd restrictions and mandates placed upon it. You can travel all over and go to theme parks or other countries but you have to jump through a ton of mandates to get on a ship which cuts half of their potential guests from being able to cruise. I LOVED cruising, been on 30 but we are just waiting it out and traveling more around the country instead. Can't wait to get back some day.
