  • One of the world's largest cruise ship, "Symphony of the Seas". Inside overview: how they work, how the world's largest ship engines are assembled for an ocean liner, and how these engines work, how many sheets need to be ironed and how many dishes to wash in one day of the cruise, who needs on board tons of ice, does it all harm the environment, why is there a 19th century telephone on an ultra-modern ship. And will there be enough lifeboats for the liner?

    I appreciate that this wasn't filled with unnecessary "fluff" that you get from Discovery Channel. None of the "but there's a problem" that turns out to _not_ be a problem at all, or a "can they get it done in time? The clock is running against them." Straight and to the point. 👍

      Thank you!! Have recently retired from radio and television and when I wrote or narrated a script, I refused to get involved with those "everything leads to disaster" themes. ".....one misplaced rivet or bolt and the ship could crack below the waterline, flood and head to the bottom." "Spinning the props too fast, too soon, could cause them to unscrew themselves and fall into the sea leaving the ship adrift."

      You are right here. I have been working on Cruise ships for 12 years, since 2002. Let's say that after 2008, the payment rate dropped drastically, and continued dropping, due to the fact that these companies, started hiring mainly people, that are from a low-paid ethnic origin, which is good so these people can work - but you get the reasons why. Anyways, unfortunately that's how the world works.

      @@Mitaka80zI went on a cruise 2 years ago and my waiter explained that to me. He was “well paid for where he’s from” but compared to us in the USA it would be minimum wage. He was well off enough to take care of his wife and kids back home, and his sick brother. The trade off? You can’t see your family for 8 months in a row until your next contract begins. We tipped him 500 dollars each, such a nice guy, great waiter and a class act.

    Thank you for taking the time to show the technical wonder of this ship. One thing I must comment on, it will be nice if the worker's payment is actually great, perhaps officers, and captains are paid well, but not those workers at the laundry, cold prep stations, etc. If that were the case the gratuity will not be mandatory. I know is a necessary mandate as many individuals will not freely do so. If you cruise, set up a separate fund to provide additional tips for all of the Staff that serves you and helps you. This action allows them to have better pay by the end of the cruise. Happy sailing and cruising.

      My concern would be that as tipping is mandatory the service would not be good. There is a restaurant here that adds the gratuity and their service is absolutely horrible. I am not listing the restaurant, I believe that if the service is poor, don’t return. Don’t put it out , let people make up their own minds. Talk to a manager if you want to…. But don’t publicly bash an establishment that may deal with a personnel problem appropriately.

      Interesting fact though, this form of transportation was around long before flying was. Passengers traveled on large ships like these throughout the 19th century, where passenger air travel didn't get going until the middle of the 20th century. Well, the ships of the 1800s were large but they didn't have quite the diversity of amenities and activities that these cruise ships today have. They had cabins, a restaurant/dining room, bars, and I think a stage and live shows also. But all of the rest we've seen on these cruises including swimming pools, I don't think they had

  • @Marilynschannel
    @Marilynschannel ปีที่แล้ว +25

    Cruise ships used to be about the ports of calls. Now, the ship itself is the destination. I have been on board the biggest ship (i have been cruising for 28 years). One of the design objectives they accomplish is that with some 5k plus people on board, it has to feel uncrowded. It does feel like that, and minimal vibrations. I was recently on the Meraviglia and barely felt movement. At this point, stopping at Nassau was a waste; I took a quick walk and returned to the ship to enjoy the spa. As I said, the ship itself is its own destination. One funny thing, especially at the buffet, is that people lose any sense of time and space. When food is in the periphery, people lose perception. Even tho they can clearly see a line going on, some will cut in line. The passenger thinks that a cruise vacation means all bets are off when it comes to drinking and think laws do not exist on board. On the Meraveglia, I didn't see the type of passengers you would usually see on Carnival.
    I did hear a drunken woman trying to start something in the dining room. In all my 28 years cruising, I only had two rough seas adventures. Like, As I said, I am at a point I like staying on the ship because it is a destination itself. Me, I spent my time in the saunas!!! Staff shortage is happening globally; I did notice this on the Meraveglia. Private Island tho, is one of the best I have seen. I hope they don't overbuild and stay almost untouched the way it is now. No, I am not a travel agent, I should be one, but I can not sell even boiling water. I wish I could like an agent I know that has a group of Plastic surgeons that once a year for training and staff. Big money. That travel agent works just on that group and he could open his own travel agency with the commission he gets from that group. I tried to sell once, but I am not good at it, i am good at taking cruise vacations, :)

So I'd probably enjoy it regardless but a lot of the people I've talked to have said there's just too many people who are way too pushy trying to sell you things. Back in 1999, I worked on Carnival Paradise, Sensation and finally Destiny. The wage back then for a bar person was around $21 dollars a MONTH! Yes we got a cabin and free (awful) food. The rest of our money was made through the tip system on every drink sold. Being British, non of the mostly American guests wouldn't buy drinks from me. I did two 5 month contracts ( working 90 to 100 hours a week) with very little time off in a day. I returned a few years later as a guest.

    When I see ships like this, I think what potential humanity has. We are only limited by greed, laziness, and corruptness. What is also sad, is this ship will be decommissioned in a decade. So much money, sweat, and love go into it just for it to find a scrap yard. Truly sad.

Even though I had tickets in Chef, Baking, and Butchery and only spoke English and French very well and some Japanese I was unable to obtain any position and I tried for two full years. But at the end of it all I did manage to cook for the late HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

    A ship need be only a few feet longer or weigh more than any other ship in its class to be the biggest or fastest. There is a market for second hand cruise ships across the globe. These ships sell for a fraction of their original cost. In the end even the glitziest cruise ships can end up on the beach in Bangladesh and fall to the cutting torches to be scrapped.

    She's actually over 130 feet longer than you mentioned. You also said the size of the propellers being 50 feet in diameter but they seemed at best 30ft, my home is 40ft long interior wise and certainly can easily be perceived at about 50ft or more and for their size i'm making this comparison. Finally you said those engines are the height of a 3 story building but you look about 1/3rd its height as you walked by it. Rant over.

    I found it interesting that the cruise company allowed him to touch/handle items in the kitchen meant to be served to passengers (post or pre pandemic), without some sort of protection. They even filmed some crew handling food without wearing some sort of gloves. No wonder there have been "viral uprisings" on some ships. I'm not a germaphobe, but most restaurant in many countries have stringent guidelines about food handling. I'm surprised it's not even more stringent on board a cruise ship, since they worry greatly about "outbreaks".
