    Trekpaarden vereniging 'het zestienspan', Kaatsheuvel (NL)
    A team of 16 Belgian draft horses as well as a John Deere tractor pulls a weight transfer sled. The winner is the one who can pull the sled the longest. Going to the end of the 100m track is named FP (full pull, see the displat on the sled).

    I have listened to some of old timers that worked with horses. They liked it and were sad to go to tractors. Not everybody that used horses were good at it and abused their horses, but the some had a special connection with their animals.
    An old horse logger told me you could kill a horse because they would pull so hard their bellies would almost be on the ground and too much weight would cause them to have a massive hernia.
    Another when asked if he was glad to have tractors said no. Horses need to rest at the end of every furrow, but tractors just kept on going and going. Driving tractor is incredibly boring.
    I was lucky to be able to listen to these old guys stories. They were strict, tough and kind.

    • @charlottebonnie5320
      @charlottebonnie5320 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you very much - I have been waiting for this kind of comment from the beginning.
      I am extremely interested in these details (especially that people are able to kill horses by means of too hard draft work ("massive hernia"). I am going to search the Romanian videos showing draft horses which have to pull extremely heavy trunks and these are "only" competitions!!! I suppose that they are all overcharged. And I bet that in Romania nobody is able resp. willing to make calculations about what is the limit for draft horses. And I bet that during these competitions there is no vet who could supervise/controll this although the Romanian law for the protection of animals is said to be strict.
      Thank you, Glenn Howden!

      I live near Amish and have watched their horses work and even driven them a time or two. Belgians are docile and willing and if trained right eager to please. Most of the folks here treat their horses reasonably well as they are an important tool for them and fairly expensive nowadays. My neighbor had a angus bull that tried to jump out of the pen it was in and broke it’s back so that it was paralyzed in the back end. There was just a narrow isle leading to the pen so they hooked up one Belgian”Clyde “ and he was able to pull this 1300 pound bull out to where they could winch it onto the “down cow” buyers trailer. That horse made it look easy. Remarkable animals that often get thought of as dumb. There is much more there

    Obviously the horses are going to win, a racehorse during a 30 second sprint has an average power output of about 35 kw thats 46hp, the maximum power output of a daft horse during the same amount of time must be approximately 60-70hp, if each of those daft horses were at its maximum doing 65 hp we would have a total of 1040 hp compare that to the 40 of the tractor, obviously they are just feeling it like a breeze not even doing a 20% of its maximum, but that's just power you could have lots of power but no force or little power but lots of force, this leads us to the next. A daft horse can pull with a force as much as 1.7 times its own weight just for a few seconds in an isometric exercise, in dynamometer pulls you can see how they never reach more than 1.2 times its own weight. The friction coefficient of steel with fine and wet dirt varies significantly but never reaches more than .6 with the average being .40 - .20 so if that weight begun at 18,000 kg and had a maximum of 40,000 kg we need a force of 5,000 kg at the beginning and it increased to 12,000 kg if the drag coefficient here is .3 and doesn't changes, which corresponds to 338 and 750 kg per horse, that's well within the horses capabilities, however the odd thing is how easy they are doing it, certainly it should look like they are doing some force but it looks like they are just walking and why the sled didn't digged like did with the tractor, that's odd and i can't explain it except that the friction coefficient could be lower, or the horses really were pulling that weight but it didn't looked like a lot.

    Pulling is about power and weight. The draft horses have typical combined weight of 32,000 pounds. Horsepower is a unit of measure and doesn't really have anything to do with an actual horse other than some arbitrary relationship in the past and the name. Animals also increase their power for brief periods before tiring out after the burst. The average horse produces about 15 peak horsepower, of which draft horses produce a more, but even so, that means the team in the video is producing 240 horsepower. The JD tractor is 42 horsepower and weighs around 8000 pounds. The draft horses are 6x the horsepower and 4x the weight. The video is a misrepresentation of a supposed equal contest.

  • @wrongfullyaccused7139

    It all boils down to physics. Compare how many square inches (feet) of contact the tires of the tractor have on the ground compared to 64 hooves? Another very important factor is how well trained the horses are.
    For example: If you have a two well trained horses that can pull 1,000 pounds each (only an example) it does not mean they can pull 2,000 pounds together. They lose about 10% efficiency because it is very difficult to get the footsteps in sync.
    This team of horses worked very well together, showing how well trained they really are.
    I would have liked to know how much that sled weighs.

    Life is awesome God provided the means to survive and he gave man these great beasts of burden to work with. But he also said be kind to them so as man kind thought we've came a long ways lol I've watched people still cutting hay plowing pulling thrashers graders. They are awesome

      Incorrect. Because mechanical horsepower takes in to account that horses must eat and rest two thirds of the day. Mechanical horsepower is accurate.

    These horses are awesome, but after reading all these gushing replies about the superiority of the horses, I'm amazed that no one noticed that the pan was not engaged when the Belgians were pulling (i.e. The horses were not doing a real pull, where the weight box progressively adds more resistance)...

    Nothing to do with power. It is all about weight. The tractor will spin as it is not heavy enough. A 100 ton tractor eith 5 HP can pul this. Only realy slow.

    oh my God that tractor didn't stand a chance! If you have seen one of these horses in person then you know the video does not come close to showing how enormous they are, they are pure muscle and huge doesn't begin to describe them!! Each one of them weighs a literally ton, 2000lbs, now multiple that by 16, omg!! ya no tractor was ever going to win that. They are such beautiful animals. Like equine rhinos.

    • @Serene80

    Not to mention the horses outweigh that tractor by a factor of 2-2.5x. That alone made it very easy to pick the winner.

      Scott: Those horses weigh about a ton each and there were 16 of them. Do you think that tractor weighs 8 tons? I would really like to know because there was not enough information in the video to do any research. The video said it as a 42 horse tractor but no model number. Let me know what you think.

    • @Serene80
      @Serene80 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because it literally couldn't pull the load any more. The sled adds traction (weight) for every foot it moves. It simply ran out of power.
