This is a song that is very often butchered by singers, thankfully this is just superb, beautiful diction both instrumentally and lyrically, Thank You, so beautiful.
Lovely job..The guitar and violin backing is beautiful. I'm old enough to remember the original air of the song that it was taken from "Fainne Gael an Lae"..The Dawning of The Day..One of the first songs I learned going to school .
It's amazing to thing the melody comes from another song and the words are a poem from paddy kavanagh as they just seem ment to be together.Im a Dublin musician and I was raised on this i lived in jamaica for a couple of years and really enjoyed there music so I recently put up a version of this song on TH-cam it's Mr Celtic Reggae raglan road I hope you listen to it and hope you like it although its reggae I really tried to keep a bit of Dublin grit in it.. slainté ☘☘☘
What really sets this apart from other versions is the tone that Dermot McIlroy puts into his guitars. They are tonally instantly recognisable and when in the hands of Maurice are just ethereal.Thank you for the post.
This is musicality at its best! Elegant, exquisite, perfectly balanced in guitar, violin and voice. What a SUPERB arrangment...truly, hauntingly lovely!! Well done Maurice!!!!
I grew up listening to this song (my grandmother lived near Raglan Road) and can wholeheartedly say that this is a superb rendition and the good sound and video quality really helps.
Certainly has the Goosebump factor ~ a great version you have done the poem/song justice and as a previous commenter said no need to compare to Lukies version they both are outstanding in their own right ~ Namaste.
Howya nial , I just put a version of RAGLAN ROAD on TH-cam I'm not nearly as good as this but no e is very different im a dublin musician who lived in jamaica for a couple of years im "Mr Celtic Reggae" raglan road youtube version. I really hope u listen and like it ☘slainté ☘thinking of home listening this now😌
Beautiful arrangement and interpretation of a fab song. IMHO is every bit as good as Lukes and I believe this interpretation lends itsself more to the song.
Very good this, very well performed with an interesting open tuning...I once heard it performed in standard tuning and it sounded completely different...great song.
Definitely a McIlroy. That headstock is distinctive. Maurice is shown in the McIlroy Myspace site also. I have an A30. Beautiful guitars, beautiful sound, build, everything.
I don't know if anyone ever heard the Skinners Rats who I think are still performing. Used to listen at the Coach House many years ago in Farningham UK. Their renditions of so many classic folk songs needs to be heard by all, this version is sublime.
The tuning is C G D G G D ...the 2nd strung is certainly tuned to G, not B, as the chord that Maurice glisses throughout, rings out with the 2nd string to G.
I think Colin is dead right. Looking at it, it's very similar to a jumbo Lowden, both in terms of size, shape, and distinctive bridge shape. Which would make sense, as Dermot McIlroy used to work at Lowden. The give away is around 4.30, when the light glints of the headstock, which is sort of square, but with a sort of 'quiff' on it. They look and sound fantastic, don't they. This one, according to the website, is an AJ model, the biggest they do. Nice
6:11 mins...yep it's a long tune alright and you did a fine job with it man. Sometimes when I sing it I think it starts to sound boring or repetative, so I tried leaving out the third verse but that's stupid, Paddy would turn in his grave, so I just leave out the inSTRUMental part and have it down to about 5 mins...
the people who say this is the best version obviously never heard of luke kelly. This song is very good but i don't think it is ever possible to beat the legend that is luke.
marine-engineering well, I’ve certainly heard Luke’s version and I still prefer this one. The slow, sad melody fits the lyrics better, IMO. People do have different tastes, you know, and that’s perfectly ok.

Good man Maurice. Beautiful version of a timeless song.
Man, Maurice's skills are amazing! What a sense of beauty and tranquillity. Great version.

Beautiful and moving version of this song. I see no need to compare it to any other version. Thanks for the pleasure.

Great rendition. always loved the poetic genius in those lyrics.
I've heard all the other versions mentioned here...YES they are really good...but this VERSION...hands down is the BEST!!
Best version of this ever.
This is musicality at its best! Elegant, exquisite, perfectly balanced in guitar, violin and voice. What a SUPERB arrangment...truly, hauntingly lovely!! Well done Maurice!!!!
Beautiful interpretation Maurice. I love that Belfast accent, shades of Vam Morrison here.
I would say this guy stands shoulder to shoulder with the greats. A marvellous musician as this performances shows.......breathtaking.
I would argue.............but I can't..........CLASS
I grew up listening to this song (my grandmother lived near Raglan Road) and can wholeheartedly say that this is a superb rendition and the good sound and video quality really helps.
I fell in love in this song.
A great song performed by one of the best musicians around.
Makes the soul weep, simply beautiful.
I watch this at least 2 times in a month.. very good version!! I love the setting violin guitar.. GREAT WORK !!!
Certainly has the Goosebump factor ~ a great version you have done the poem/song justice and as a previous commenter said no need to compare to Lukies version they both are outstanding in their own right ~ Namaste.
One of the best version so far, great sound in open tuning. Thanks so much
my favorite, not only a picker but a sweet voice as well....thanks for uploading
Sublime. Takes me away for a while. Paddy would be proud no doubt.

Just found this - great version, Maurice!
Beautiful arrangement and interpretation of a fab song. IMHO is every bit as good as Lukes and I believe this interpretation lends itsself more to the song.
i could listen to this for a lifetime .
Yes! This is a lovely rendition of a wonderful song.
Another great version of this deep root song :)
Ah, wonderful... I think I really likes it! Very nice job and I agree with others, I have not heard Raglan Rd any better than this - nice going!
one of my favorite versions of this wonderful song. Too bad that the author's life was so unhappy.
Such a sweet rendition of this beautiful song
Beautifully done, bravo!
Which ever version is best really is a matter of opinion. As one who plays the guitar, I think it's splendid.
BEAUTIFUL
Very good this, very well performed with an interesting open tuning...I once heard it performed in standard tuning and it sounded completely different...great song.
best male interpretation of this beautiful song!
Don't think this song could be performed any better than this.
Beautifully sung and great guitar tone, I believe the guitar is a Mcilroy, handmade in Northen Ireland.
Nice one Maurice and a sweet guitar.
Feckin' STUNNING xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Wonderful Maurice ❤
Lovely Rendition !
Outstanding rendition, i don't think anyone will ever get close to drew or kellys rendition, however i tip my bonnet to you.
thanks for post....very enjoyable
Very nice version. I liked it very much.
beautiful !

The best Version of this song

HI Maurice , Beautiful Best I have heard .
This is wonderfully done... congratulations. Might the tab be available?
Very nice man! Shine on! :)
Hello Maurice ! Jens here ! I love your Musik ! Please say hello to Kathrine!
superb
Thanks

Excuse my ignorance but is that before or after capoing?
Very nice version

As Bernard Matthews would say...'BOOTIFUL'.
oops sorry, its not Myspace but McIlroy's TH-cam channel.
exellent
bravo dickey
i have just gotten into dadgad playing and would love to play raglan roan the way you do. do you have any "how to play" videos ?
Did you ever play at the Windsor Rec' Social Club on the Lisburn Road?
For Shaw Patterson
Lets me shed a tear every morning before i go to war with life
Nice one Maurice, n a tasty bit of pickin
Nice.
Beautiful, what king of guitar does he use? It sounds terrific but looks HUGE, like a super dreadnought?
beautiful - anyone know what tuning he's using?

Luke Kelly's is the definitive also Patsy McAvoy from Fair isle also has a beautiful version. Like this one too
So, if the moral of this song could be distilled into a sound bite, its "Women are users. Don't trust them".
Maith thu!
am i take it you never heard of the great luke kelly!!
Nice

Is he playing in Celtic or open D tuning?
On a quiet street where old ghost's meet .
I think he is tuned CGCGGC (C5) but I play it easier with CGDGGD (G5/C)
Nice version to be honest but nothing cant be Luke's version. Good effort though!
nice but nowhere close to the power of luke kelly's rendering
Ruins the song.
