Like Rei was an ideal, he embodied the archetype of a husbando.
He knew exactly what to say to make Shinji feel understood, had a private artistic side, had the ideal shoulder-waist ratio, a charming smile and was confident enough to initiate romance. Those traits are found in >95% of anime husbando characters.
Those characters exist because they reflect an archetype that the majority of humans understand and appreciate. Like the wise old man or the compassionate mother, the husbando is both familiar and reassuring when we recognize it
So glad the anime didn't use the manga version of Kaworu. Anime Kaworu felt so right for a character.

Kaworu was the equivalent of Lucifer. He did not want to obey the divine order, but like any angel, he felt compelled to, so he asked to die, as struggling against your birth programming is excruciating.
That makes me question if some of the angels, particularly the one who attacked the Magi and the ones who entered Asuka and Shinji's minds, could actually be attempting communication, albeit unsuccessfully because of their Eldritch nature.
I mean, Rei tried as well (Yui knew she didn't belong here anymore because she actually liked the synchro she acquired). But she managed to get ambitious. We humans are truly scaredy cats. They had two angels in their possession (one of them Lilith, who fools the Angels for them to not find Adam) and yet they refused communication.

The Rebuilds aren’t a different story, it’s a sequel to the original. The story is cyclical as 3.0+1.0 shows us with Kaworu himself at the end lol.

If you watched the anime carefully you would understand rebuilds are „what if” alternate universe. New pilot (one with pink suit) was pilot that died in original anime. There was scene telling us that one eva having tested certain drive (cant remember name of, it had wings and unlimited energy for eva) and it was unsuccessful making eva and this pilot die. It was confirmed its the same pilot as one in the rebuild.

I get the actual timeline now, i wish it was a sequel but it really isnt. Somewhat prefer the original ending, but i see that the rebuild ending is the better one. What an amazing series

Given the time loop that the Eva series takes place in, it's likely that all the versions of Kaworu we saw happened.
Because Kaworu knows he's living in a loop, he knows that nothing he does truly matters, as it will all be reset in the next loop. There were probably a bunch of different loops we never saw, where Kaworu tried a bunch of different things.

My theory is that Rei is technically the 17th Angel too just like Kaworu. The Angel's are species that have the potential to inherit earth. So he and Rei are both Tabris

I doubt they would use unknown DNA for Kaworu ... could it have been Gendo or Shinjis DNA ? that would add an additional layer of narrative symmetry, similar to Rei's back story.
Then Kaworu would look like Shinji or Gendo, but he doesn't. We know how clones work- Rei is a perfect little clone of Yui, both in the looks and in her shy calm personality. We saw how Gendo looked like when he was young in the latest movie- Kaworu would look like that then. Plus their personalities couldn't be more different. Many speculate that Kaworu's donor may be doctor Katsuragi, Misato's father, and if his donor was someone from the main cast I'm sure we would know that by now.

Its all the same Kaworu and all the same story each time Shinji rebuilds the world. Kaworu is the only one that knows it and uses it to get closer to shinji each time

I think him dying was actually him destroying his AT field (his body), so he would be welcomed into Rei, whose field was also reported to have manifested (they did not know it was her though), probably disappearing temporarily.
He didn't want to cause the Impact like that. He wanted it to be Shinji's choice. But his body was compelled to obey and try to reunite before he could get anyone's consent.
At least, that was my interpretation. Some of the last Angels did seem more like poor communicators than Apocalypse bringers after all.

The rebuilds and NGE story are one and the same as Kaworu said when talking to Shinji during Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time.
I always took Kaworu's affection towards Shinji as sort of a response to the Angel Armisael's attempt to understand human psyche - See, when it tries to connect with Rei it feels an overwhelming feeling of love towards Shinji coming from her. It might be Yui's love seeping through Rei or simply Rei's own feelings finally materializing. The angels, I believe, are connected. If not to each other then at least to Adam, which makes Adam's (Armisael's) sole personal interaction with another human being an experience of love and affection towards our useless protagonist. For him, that's how a "human" works, and he simply mimics this when sent down by Selee. Heck, you could even use this theory for when the 15th Angel "rapes" Asuka's mind. Although we don't see it from what I remember, I kinda suspect even Asuka harbors feelings towards Shinji deep down, which the Angel is bound to pick up on.
This was my own long-held belief on Kaworu after watching NGE, without having had a deep dive into lore and theories beforehand. The rebuild series kinda disproves my theory a bit, but since I've had it since my very first watch, I like to cling to it, as in my world it makes a whole lot of sense.
You're very close to trully understanding Evangelion. Keep in mind that the movies are a continuation of the story. Not a loop, not a rebuild, not a remake, they're simply sequences. Every time the world ends, it is reborn as Shinji wishes, until it reborns one last time at the last movie, when Shinji finally comes in therms with himself. Kaworu is a higher beeing that has conscience of this timeline, because he's a vessel to Adam's soul, as Rei's a vessel to Lilith's soul. Hence why they're always present at very high roles in every impact.

It is a mystical-almost psychedelic space opera written by the Guy who made the obscure 60`s western film "El Topo". (Worth a watch). The story involves a character that realizes that the universe is constantly reseting. Before reading your comment I had never noticed Evangelion utilizes the same trope.
This is EXACTLY what I've been saying too! So happy I'm not the only one who assumed this when I watched it. Seems like no one talks about this aspect of the Angels. With each Angel attack, they get closer and deeper into the Human world. They learn with each invasion, they inch further to achieving their goal. Infiltrating buildings, to computers, to the human psyche. The 12th Angel, who invaded Shinjis mind, learned so much about what he wants and needs. To me this was all part of the plan. The creator even said Kaworu is the embodiment of the perfect human in Shinji's eyes. Kaworu was sent for a reason and Shinji was made a pilot for a reason. The Angel's and Seele/Genji are incredibly strategic. He was built like that for a purpose. Of course he'd pursue Shinji, he already knew him and already loved him. It's ironic he's named the Angel of Free will because even though he truly loved Shinji (romantic, maternal, platonic, whatever) he can never do anything about it.

Kaoru being an angel is a cool twist. But I'm gonna brag this time: I had conceived of a story a few yrs ago (still in draft form til now) having a similar twist before I even knew this twist in Evangelion. Now I'm stucked how would redesign such twist so as to not be seen as a mere "Kaoru twist copycat". But it's not like it's sure my story will become popular, so it's no problem 😄
Devilman played was apparently a big inspo for Anno. So I can imagine where those themes came from 😊

If religious dogma is to be believed and their mythos, Satan is just this nebulous entity, similar to god but acts as the antithesis of it. Lucifer was an angel cast out of heaven for a reason, be it failing to follow god's orders or for leading an unsuccessful revolt or whatever.
Fun fact; Satan isn't actually described in the bible, so modern depictions are from the 1500s. He's just described as "beast-like", which given how biblically-accurate angels look must be all kinds of fucked up to look at.

So if you watch the Rebuild, itThe explains the differences between the manga and the anime. Kaworu caskets/containers on the moon, some are empty. It's a sign that they have done this all before. Each installment on Evangelion is what Shinji chooses to do at the end.
3:15 it's literally the same guy. It's shown in rebuild that the eva series is a reoccurring time loop and that Koworu is the same consciousness every time, reliving the events of the series each iteration and understanding humanity/falling in love with shinji more. That's why he is more rey like in the manga and doesn't know shinji well until spending time with him, whereas he already knows him decently in NGE, and thoroughly knows him in rebuild. This guy really didn't do much research on the character before making the video

His form of love is closer to unconditional with hints of empathetic and companionship, but decidedly low in romantic or physical love.

The language used in Japanese is very deliberate. I'm still not 100% convinced it's purely platonic, given there's a lot of homoerotic subtext from both of them 😂 But no doubt he's complicated

it's not explanation, it's retelling of history.
so I just want to explain a few things
1. Assuming Eva ANIMA is canon-it is possible that Manga Kaworu is the way he is because that is the FIRST cycle, meaning he hadn't interacted with humans yet-even if it isn't, if Campus Apocalypse (the first bit of Eva material aside from a PS2 game to mention gendo timeline hopping) then it is possible the manga is the base of the world tree, again explaining Kaworu's personality. This timeline hopping would also explain why a SECOND rebuild finale poster came out, this time WITHOUT Kaworu-as he had left the timeline.
2. Kaworu IS Tabris and ADAM, during the PS2/PSP game you can play as him, where it's revealed he wrote the dead sea scrolls SEELE use. In his ending, all the Angels and EVAs leave Earth with another moon object (white moon = angel-like life, black moon = human-like, created by the FAR-First Ancestral Race when their world was dying)

ALERT !!! I've just now understood what is Rei excatly !!
* At 2:49 we can almost see Lilith's entire body, with Rei just in front. Later ( in another movie i guess, can't remember all of them lol) we'll see Lilith's body almost cut in half!
* We know Rei is linked to Lilith, it is said they share the same soul or whatever ...
* Lilith's body seems to be formed of thousands of little bodies ( we always see these legs hanging )
* Rei might be not just a clone created by SEELE, but she may have been '' took out '' of Lilith's body .
This would explain why we see Lilith's body shrinking throughout the series and movies. Rei may looks like the real Lilith . Maybe Lilith looks that way because she is sealed by this things in her hand, which make her not having her real appearance.
So Rei would be a fraction of sealled Lilith.

I think i prever the og anime version over the manga version. Havent seen the rebuild movies yet so i can speak to those, but the manga version sounds fairly generic imo while the og anime version came across as far more complex and interesting

If you wanna get technical, it's pronounced "Zeel-uh" since Seele is German for "Soul" but the english dub made the Say-lay pronunciation more popular even though it's technically wrong. Sooo...
Double e in German is pronounced more like ey in english phonetics - seen in other words like schnee or see. So technically it is a mix of both: zey-luh. From what I can tell they pronounce it this way in the subbed version of the show too.
@@cryingkelp I have never met anyone in my Country that pronounces "Schnee" with an "ey" at the end. It´s just a longer "e".
