in fairness to trump with a huge caveat of him knowing the finer details, all the countries who are being threatened or does feel the threat from russia, do spend 2% or more of their GDP on defense like Lithuania before and after Russia invasion. and all the countries not really being threatened by russia like Canada Germany or France are not spending 2% of GDP on defense before and after Russia invasion. So America is still on the hook for defending Lithuania. most likely he is just pandering to the isolationist part of his supporters or just a blow hard building up himself to appear to have made a difference.

We just had a presidential election in Finland on Sunday. The winner, Alexander Stubb, visited the party of his competitor, Pekka Haavisto, before going to his own, and Stubb made a speech at his competitor's party where he for example said that Haavisto is "one of the greatest persons he has ever met". And then they hugged. Democracy is still doing fairly well at some parts of the world.
I have really enjoyed watching some of Alexander Stubb’s TH-cam content! He’s a fantastic teacher and I’m sure will serve Finland as an excellent leader!

I actually did quite a lot of thinking on which one to vote, Stubb or Haavisto, in the second round. I am especially glad that this remote, dark and cold country is going to have a president with a great international reputation.

I worked in the cancelation department at a security company that secured his golf course in Florida and I sent him final demand letters every month before the bill would be paid. Seth's delivery is getting better and better with each new show. This ACL is no exception. He was on fire from the get-go. My all time favourite SNL skit! I'm Canadian and I was happy Latvia was included because they're our NATO buddy. Canada is in charge of the Deterrence And Defense Operation in Latvia, we always have lots of troops stationed there, plus training camps and command HQ, beefed up since Russia invaded Ukraine. We also spent 10 years doing the lion's share of the training of Ukrainian troops, still do except now with British troops in Poland and the UK.
Trump has no understanding of everything the other NATO nations contribute. Including to the US, the only NATO member that used Article 5 to obligate other members to fight its war, costing them countless billions and many thousands of lives. It is the US that owes a debt to NATO and allies.

This is really funny to me. I just came from a birthday party for a 96-year-old and spent quality time with my BFF who is 90. Then I came home to my 76-year-old husband. Especially since the US is the ONLY NATO MEMBER that used Article 5. That's the part of the North Atlantic Treaty that says if a member is attacked it can call on the other NATO nations to come to its aid, which of course the US did after 9/11. NATO nations fought for the US in Afghanistan, a 20-year war, costing them not only billions of dollars but the sacrifice of thousands of lives and limbs. No other country has ever asked for NATO to fight their war. The US is the only country that owes that debt to NATO allies. So to say "you fought our war when we were attacked but if you are attacked, not only will we not respect our treaty obligations, nor repay our allies who fought our war, we will ask our enemy to attack you." That's a traitor.
And a stupid one who still does not understand how NATO works. No countries pay or owe money to NATO.

without USA in NATO, there is still no realistic way for Russia to invade into central europe. Russia is in a quagmire in Ukraine and even without US support, it would just end up like Afghanistan.
in fairness to trump with a huge caveat of him knowing the finer details, all the countries who are being threatened or does feel the threat from russia, do spend 2% or more of their GDP on defense like Lithuania before and after Russia invasion. and all the countries not really being threatened by russia like Canada Germany or France are not spending 2% of GDP on defense before and after Russia invasion. So America is still on the hook for defending Lithuania. most likely he is just pandering to the isolationist part of his supporters or just a blow hard building up himself to appear to have made a difference.

Yes paying your defense obligations is how NATO works. This is a mutual beneficial relationship that requires 2% of GDP for defense.

That protection provided isn't based on whether a nato member was able to fulfill their monetary obligation. That it's not a subscription but moreso a mutually beneficial donation.

@@tampabong5055 The arrangement is a goal that all nations spend 2% on their own defence and that all will defend any other nation that gets attacked. No country is paying into a central NATO fund which is what Trump was claiming.
Also note that the only time Article 5 (the one about mutual defence) has come into play was after 9/11. The UK did not invoke it when the Falklands got invaded and no other country invoked it after Islamic terrorist attacks.
Another thing to note is that the US military is well-known for paying well over the odds for equipment, so their 2% might not go as far as another countries 2%. Also, some countries have resources that can't be priced, such as proximity to Russian giving them better early warning systems. Maybe Germany should price the rent of US bases on the same basis as Trump values his real-estate value when he applied for loans.

Thank you for being one of the few voices pointing out that one does not pay to be in NATO. I find that the conventional sources of media fail to state that in a clear and succinct way.
