Remember, he's not on trial for paying hush money to a porn star, he's on trial for lying about those payments in his business records. That may seem like a lesser infraction morally speaking, but it's definitely the stronger one legally speaking.
It's also for election interference, ironically, for hiding damaging information from voters... and of course what he did in order to accomplish it.
And using money that was tagged for campaigning. You don't mess campaign funds.

Trump will be under the judge's thumb in court. If Trump starts bleating nonsense, the judge can slap him with contempt. Which, would be awesome. I would love to see Trump spend a night in jail. So, yeah. We want Trump in court as much as possible, and pissed off as possible.
Everything he says in court, even if he said it at a rally earlier, is useable against him. There are a lot of weird, complicated rules I won't pretend to understand, but anything Trump says in court is going to be biting him in the ass if he starts contradicting himself in even one of his trials. Remember when he was making completely ridiculous claims about voter fraud in public but in the court cases his lawyers weren't making completely different arguments? There was a reason for that; lying in court has consequences, not just fines or jail for contempt of court, but you can lose a lot of advantages that a saner client might otherwise have in the case.
