@@theTechNotice 16:54 About this part , jay was about to say that since he has so many ssd's in the motherboard, the pcie lanes in the 13900k is stretching to its limits and basically forced the rtx 4090 to run at x8 instead of x16
if one ssd were to go , meaning removed from the motherboard , it would running in x16 again ❤️👍

@@theTechNotice This is a pointless argument. Even though the gpu is only operating at pcie 4.0 x8, it's still running at the same speeds as pcie 3.0 x16 slots. Which we all know, or should know, will NOT impact the performance of the 4090. The 4090 can't saturate the full buss of the pcie 3.0 x16. So regardless of where you put the M.2, it's not impacting the performance of the PC at all.
Also, yes Jay is beating his head against the wall for getting the M.2's with heatsinks. Although this PC didn't cost him a dime out of pocket.

Ok, I am a fan of Jay's channel but also an IT Pro who has been building PCs for 25 years. I remembered watching this video and was shocked at the mistakes that were made. ESPECIALLY the PCIe lane mistake. I watch all of you guys not to learn but to see all the new tech that I obviously can't just go out and buy (I do buy a lot, though, lol). I am surprised that it made it off the cutting room floor. Many people who do not know how to build a PC on a high level watch him, and it is spreading bad practices. Really surprised he uploaded it, and I can see why you did this video. Again, I am a fan of his channel, but with this one, I was like, WTF?

I've watched a lot of both Tech Notice and Jayz videos putting together my latest (and hopefully last) build. Just placed my orders yesterday. I've learned a lot from both and what a hoot to see this cross-channel video show up the next day! Looking at a build primarily for fairly light level content creation, I've largely gone with the components of $1500 build video with a bump up to the 13600k, 3060ti, and a 750w PSU.
I did spend an hour looking for the video where Jay made one comment about an air cooler he's used in bunches of builds... never found it... and then realized I'd wasted an hour trying to find something that was one of the least important factors, since the Peerless Assasin 120 would surely do everything I'd ever need. Especially at my light work loads. But you know.... there are a lot of rabbit holes one can go down looking at putting together a build.
I'm grateful for both of you and your channels. I've learned a lot and certainly was able to make much better informed choices due to them. Though admittedly, having nearly zero interest in gaming, Tech Notice is my go to. I'm so grateful you're here with a focus on content creators' decisions.

My gpu runs at X8 anyways - but I am glad it does as it frees up valuable Cpu lanes . Plus the chipset gives even more lanes - but what most people don't know is - when they use these extra lanes - they lose other items ... sata ports , pcie slots and sometimes ... whole nvme slots . Also sometimes the nvme slots will run at X2 instead of X4 . It is good to fully research your motherboard purchase before you commit - as you might be disappointed later and not have quite the machine that you originally planned on .

If you limit the CPU to Intel recommended voltage (so, stop the mobo from goosing it to 300+ watts) are you really leaving performance behind? ISTM those power spikes are short lived, add a lot to heat and do little for real world performance. If you watch videos of people under-volting their CPU they lose very little in performance and gain a lot in heat savings making air cooling very workable. IIRC I saw a video where someone did as above and lost six seconds on a 10 minute render. No one will notice that but the system ran much, much cooler.

I can only imagine how many people go up to you guys at the big shows and I don't want to be that guy. 🖖🏽 I appreciate how you done this and I also cringed at the HD capacity. OS and Scratch was okay but unless they're sending it straight to a mass storage NAS/Server I don't understand having that small of a finished product drive. EDIT: I'm on a small budget and have a Crucial MX500 that's 4TB that I use for a project drive. Yeah it's not as "fast" as a M.2 NVMe but i's faster than a spinning drive. Once everything is Final I offload to the NAS anyway.

Agreed on the 7/10. I watch a lot of J2C/listen to rtfm. I also watch your videos too as someone who uses PPro your specific insights always help my use cases. I saw Jay's video first and honestly I thought it was an okay video but somewhat poor at times too. They might have other things going on that day and this was a thrown together mess maybe. But nonetheless yesssss, there were a few ways he, Phil, and/or Nic could have proactively headed off a few issues before they came up. Also - as a side note, and as someone who visited Microcenter twice this week. I go in there and I sometimes find myself getting 'lost in the possibilities', thinking of friends I should text to see if they need anything. Its just a pc hardware nerd paradise and it can cloud your buying process really quick.

Yeah it never ceases to amaze me how people are still going with these goofy looking / case air flow preventing/ sub-par performing Air-coolers when building a high-end PC.. You're already spending like a minimum of $2500.00 + so opting for an Air-cooler for like $50.00 bucks less vs. going with a decent 360mm AIO (good one's like the DEEPCool LT720 go far just ~ $140 USD) is just an asinine thing to witness. Every time I see one of those goofy looking air coolers in a high end build I just shake my head in disappointment.
Do these people not understand that the probability of a decent 360mm AIO failing is virtually ZERO as long as you aren't dumber than a box of rocks with the install?? I think some people are just hyper-paranoid for no good reason and think they're "playing it safe" by sacrificing performance / aesthetics because "no water"… I've personally been running AIO's for years with ZERO issues whatsoever. But whatever.. If having an EYESORE in your PC case makes you feel "safer" knock yourself out I guess..
Anyways as far as RAM is concerned the amount that is "optimal" will obviously be hugely dependent on what YOU are using your system for. However, I think for the vast majority 32GB of DDR5 is MORE than enough for both gaming (really 16GB is enough here) and production stuff.
So it's better to NOT use the PCIe 5.0 "M.2 slots" if you are installing PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSDS? (I'm using (2) 2 TB WD_Black SN850X M.2 SSD's for reference) My Asus ROG STRIX X670E-F has (2) PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots and (2) PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots so looks like I should keep those (2) PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots open until PCIe 5.0 M.2's become available. Otherwise my RTX 4090 will suffer performance wise? I'll just use the PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots regardless as using the PCIe 5.0 M.2. slots wont offer a performance benefit with PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD's regardless so it's no real loss anyway. Also, I opted for a proper 360mm AIO as apposed to an EYESORE / Air-cooler so no issues with having to uninstall the thing just to get access to the M.2. slots whenever PCIe 5.0 capable M.2 SSD's become available.

Yeah right they just needed u to tell them and explain them where they wrong. U as a one experienced PC builder😂😂....ohhh man.... Well....if u read or even watch video tell me did Jay said that he will make best of best for that purpose? Nope. Did he said that PC will only been used for editing? Nope. And as we all know but seems u don't know Phill is also a gamer so....u know what want to tell....think no need for explonation. And Microcenter game him exact amount how many they can spend for that PC but let's forget bout that. Let's continue....so u think in ur combo he would get Edit machine that will finish job for 2-3 5 mins before that one they choose? Well....nope. So I guess u think they will use 5-10 usbs or thunderbolt all time? Well...nope....and yeahh so u think Phill can get same FPS on ur edit ring and that they choose when he play game? Well...again noooo. And most important thing is " Do u think u opened their eyes and they never hear for motherboards that are mostly used for editors or content creators or let's say workstations so they need u to learn them and tell them"? Well idk what to say except one more time big "NOOOOO". But I know for sure one thing and that is that u think u will get followers if u do that funny video where u act as a smart learning one script and then shoving how u are "smart"....but again idk what time I said this "NOOOO". Ppl don't like guys like u that go against their colegues and acting smart on video. My guess is that u didn't have any theme and u didn't know what to do and watched YT to get inspiration and even then u didn't know what to make and then u said let's throw a axe to a friend. And one more thing, in ur video about Air cooling u said u get over 38500+ points on Water cooled 13900k??? So I was watched LTT and GN and didn't see any even close result and we know who are they right. And u said it's on stock, so u was lie all of ur followers coz it's impossible to get that result on stock and with some middle end water cooler. So I strongly recommend u that u go watch Linus video and how they overclock 13900k and with what they cooled it and watch cooling on direct die from same creator and go watch GN (Steve) so u can see that it's not possible.I know u can put on screen 8000000 points but ppl are not idiots u know. And in that ur video for best Air cooler (Noctua NH15) u get low results or as I said u was needed to do tests again??? Man....u have some serious problems man....possible is that u don't know how to do ur job correctly or u just payed from competitors to throw a axe on them so AK400 better cooled than Noctua.... Idk what to tell u anymore man, honestly u dissapointed alit of ppl and now we know why u have that amount of subscribers. So I recommend u that u go watch some LTT and GN and early Jayz2cents videos and u can learn alot from them, belive me. That way u do ur job it's not propper way and ull only lose ur subs. It's strange that u didn't told them they could buy Threadeipper for that job😂😂😂....I guess Jay never hear for that😂😂😂😂 so he only wait for u to tell him. Ohhhh man....u are one complete joke, now I know. Peace

Ummmm, i believe you are actually wrong, about mistake #4. Someone, please correct me if im wrong, but it looks like the 2nd m.2 down from the cpu, is the one that shares the pci express lane, with the gpu slot. The FIRST m.2 is directly connected to the cpu. It seems like maybe you read the block diagram wrong....i urge you guys, to go to 12:00 exactly in the video, and tell me if im wrong.
Edit: Also, you come across, kind of pretentious here. How're you gonna act like you havent gone through his whole video, and dissected it, just so can patronize him to try and make yourself look so much better.
Even with you being able to dissect his entire video, you manage to read the block diagram wrong. And i JUST watched one of your videos (that lead me here) and part of that video was you explaining how to read a block diagram. Like wth dude, come on.
Yes, Jay may have made some mistakes, but you really didnt have to put him down like that.
Anddd, about the whole, m.2 thing where he got a bunch of em with heat sinks on them. You know hes sponsored by microcenter right? How do you know they didnt just have a shitload of those m.2's with the heat sinks, because no one was buying them, so they decided to give em to Jay? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmn?

Before buying the components for a new build, I always spec out all of the hardware, I download the motherboard manual and always check out the NVMe and PCIe slot configuration and any PCIe Lane sharing. I use this information to determine how I am going to configure all of the hardware, and also to finalize my hardware decisions, which might include a processor change or motherboard change. I try to never share PCIe Lanes unless I have no choice, but I tend to buy high-end systems with processors that have more lanes (i7-6950X with 40 Lanes, W7-2495X with 64 Lanes, etc). I also make sure that the GPU slot runs at x16. I always buy Noctua air coolers now, after having a $6000 water cooled system leak and corrode, I don't care if you can get 3 degrees cooler on water, it's not worth my sanity, or the repair bill. Before buying I also watch as many TH-cam videos as I can on the hardware, so that I can catch any issues in my setup choices.
My most recent system purchase is an Intel Xeon W7-2495X 24-Core 48-Thread, ASUS Pro WS W790 ACE (I chose this over the Asrock W790 due to the bad PCIe slot layout on the Asrock), 512GB (8x64GB) of Kingston DDR5-4800 RDIMM, ASUS ROG STRIX RTX-3090 24GB (I already had this), Noctua NH-U14S cooler, WD Black 2TB NVMe, WD Black 4TB NVMe, backup hard drives, Corsair 5000D Airflow case, Corsair HX-1200 psu, Ducky keyboard, Microsoft mouse, Dell 34-inch wide display, Mackie speakers.

Occasionally, I'll watch a J2C video to see what "tech" he's pushing; his content is riddled with assumptions and inaccuracies. He typically buys high-end, slaps it together, and claims it's the "best" at whatever, with little thought or research into balance and efficiency.
LTT is in that same vein.

It's a bad message to send to PC builders who get into the craft with the expectation that you can always upgrade and expand; ie you don't always have to buy the latest and greatest to achieve acceptable results. I would really like to see the old system vs the new system performance with some Pugetbench scores and render times.

This channel recently had a video showing quite a few air coolers as very close to the aio he used, for some reason he chose to include 2 lower end Be Quiet air coolers, instead of the one that Jay chose. Seems logical to use an aio on top tier cpu's even if some air coolers are 'good enough' though.

I also put a project M.2 with its own heat sink in the second slot (all I could find at the time) and left the MB heat sink out. All has been working well for 2 years but makes me wonder if it’s the optimal configuration. Good to see the experts wrestle with these issues too, and work it out.

So prior to 13th gen and possiibly 12th gen Intel cpu's. The M.2 slot issue wasn't a thing. All the motherboards were designed to either run 1 M.2 from the cpu and have a x16 gpu, or run all M.2 from the chipset. I know the x570 and Z590 boards did not have this issue. I don't know if the z690 require the same consideration as the z790's.

That top slot is gen 5. If you run Gen 5 in x8, it's the same as Gen 4 x16. It makes no difference until Gen 5 GPUs come out.

    • @geezer2tech154
      @geezer2tech154 ปีที่แล้ว

My understanding is that to run generation 5, you need both a gen 5 drive and a gen 5 slot. If you had a gen 5 drive in that slot, it would run Gen 5 x8 or roughly equivalent to Gen 4 x16. However, you don't have a gen 5 drive in that slot, you have a gen 4 drive running on 8 lanes, so it's gen 4 x8.
