It's worth noting this is part three in the four-part "Business Applications" series.

    1200 AND 2400 baud modems?
What a time to be alive.

26:50 A follow-on to their previous outliner, called “ThinkTank” if I recall rightly.
Nobody seems to use outliners any more. At one point their function was rolled into some word processors. But I think even that has disappeared.

The competition in supercomputers goes on to this day.
    It's all about power.

As I'm watching this, I'm waiting for Stable Diffusion to render something for me. And all I can think is, "Wow, what a long way we've come in a relatively short amount of time. These people are arguing about spreadsheet programs, and not THAT far in the future, here I am prompting Artificial Intelligence to make photorealistic art for me just by telling it what to create."

These were all boring type of computing but were huge factors pushing the PC platform to global dominance, creating mass demand for PC and innovation, leading to where we are today.

I didn’t realize until now that Excel was released on Mac OS before Windows

The Mac and the its OS (at that time not called macOS), were actually the big bets Microsoft was doing. Remember that Microsoft (and Bill G) were smart enough to understand that something like DOS was a fluke. And they were still way behind with something like Windows (1.0 and 2.0 are mostly a joke). Microsoft’s BIG bet was Apple, first as king of the 8 bit realm, and then as Queen of the future with the Mac. INMHO Bill didn’t steal Apple’s thunder; Apple never leveraged the Mac at anywhere near the price point it needed back then, and Microsoft decided to leverage the PC into what the Mac never achieved. But back in the early 80s, Bill was betting on the Mac.

Excel 1.x was Mac-only. The first Windows version was 2.2, if I recall rightly.
Microsoft had a longtime habit of screwing up something somewhere. The 1.x versions of Excel only used the bottom 20 bits of each address--I think they used the leftover 12 bits for some odd purposes internal to the application. This caused problems on Macs with multiple megabytes of RAM, where more than one app was loaded under MultiFinder: Apple had to include special code to check for Excel, and ensure it was always loaded at the bottom of RAM.

24:55 Lotus cosies up with IBM, just as the latter is starting to slide from its peak in control of the market. So it goes on to create 1-2-3/M (I think it was called) for IBM’s mainframes, and also 1-2-3/G, the version with the GUI, but for OS/2, not for Windows. This leaves the Windows market, when it starts to take off not long after this, wide open for Microsoft to dominate.
