    How things have changed. Mainboards these days have everything needed for a complete PC which eliminates the need for expansion boards. But you still have the option to install boards if you need special or enhanced functionality. Add-in video cards, SSD host adapters are very popular. And there are sound cards still around.

      Computing as a hobby was a horrifically expensive hobby back then if you wanted the best most recent technology that we take for granted today. It's why I have little fond memories of this era because I could not afford to get anything remotely modern and had to use very old equipment that was painfully slow.

    16:19 - Here is a thing that frequently bugs me on this show.
    "Let's run DIR in DOS, and here's how it looks at XT speeds, and here's how it looks at 386 speeds! Of course you wouldn't spend $1000 just to get faster DIR"
    THEN WHY IS THAT YOUR DEMO?!?
    It's like when Apple reps demo'ed the IIc+ and to show off the 4MHz speed they ran Math Blaster, and it was like "see how much faster? Of course that makes the game unplayable, so you wouldn't do that..."
    Yeah, no, turbo mode on a IIc+ is all but worthless for games. Show Appleworks or GEOS or something!
    Like, come on guys, figure out what is the good thing to demo, and demo that!
    The AutoCAD example isn't necessarily one that everyone would relate to but it's very much a visual demo, you can see the computer doing something cool, and doing it faster.
    The Lotus 1-2-3 example is less of a visual demo but it's one that more users would be able to relate to, since spreadsheets were a big killer app in the 80s.
    Both were good examples IMO. So why waste time with DIR?

      The apple one with math blaster was literally because apple didn't bother to bring their own apple software and the only thing they could find that showed any easy to see difference was a producers daughter's copy of math blaster. Stewart has talked about it, it was a last minute fix because apple didn't give a damn about the ] [ or the ] [c etc

  • @tetsujin_144
    @tetsujin_144 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    5:31 - "What is the difference between extended memory and expanded memory?"
    Ugh... I had DOS PCs back in the day, dealt with all this nonsense and I still can't keep it straight in my head. Like they're called "Extended" and "Expanded" and they both start with the letter "E" and with the "X" sound and so they're XMS and EMS... What always threw me was that I thought EMS ("Expanded memory") was the better, more desirable one, but I guess it's actually just the more compatible one because the EMS driver can usually be configured to auto-provision space as needed, so if you have EMS set up then you're compatible with both XMS and EMS software...

      No Apple doesn’t. The hosts spoke to how Apple designs products as appliances (and they have options for installing what you want - that’s what the Mac Pro is for). You can still replace basic parts and build to order, but their philosophy isn’t exclusive - if you don’t like what they’re doing, there are other choices. That’s how the market works.
      In fact as Apple has progressed through the years, they’ve become more open, specifically in the software side. If they were really about locking you down, they wouldn’t use an OS based around even more open standards than when this was originally filmed.
      But hey, spitting out stupid comments is way easier than understanding nuance.
