I was just thinking about this video the other day, what a coincidence I found it today! I think I was like 8 years old when I first watched this video

One of my favorite things about this is the free roaming. I think that if the idea of a free roam platformer can be done well, it'd be really fun. But that's just me.
I JUST REMEMBER THIS VIDEO SINCE 2017 I WAS KID IT IS SO BLOODY NOSTALGIA INTO MY HEART AFTER ALL I ALWAYS LOVE THAT VIDEO OF THE SONIC FANGAME!!! 🥹🥹💕💕
You know, while it may not be for some, an open world sonic game giving the player the ability to run around and explore at their hearts content alongside a story to follow at your own pace would be an idea that I could certainly get behind.
Holy crap this is beautiful. This must've been hell to program. Congrats to all the hard work that was put in this fan project. I really love the idea of an open world Sonic game.
Seriously, this looks like a ton of fun! Feels like it could be Sonic Racing Adventure 3D Blast (and Knuckles?). lol. Thanks for sharing. I love how fast you guys made Sonic, especially Super Sonic, and the large world is very appropriate for that much speed.
This makes me wonder how an open world sonic game would play out. Just throw the player into a huge world map, with clashing climates (zones) the further you progress and let the player run around. Yeah, non linear gameplay certainly isn't sonic's style, but if players can keep the speed going (as demonstrated in this video with the boost and super sonic) and explore at the same time, it shouldn't be too intrusive and might actually be fun. Who knows, all I can say is, green hill paradise looks super fun to play through.
Right? For me the problem is getting the feel just right, 3D Sonic needs to be able to get a handle on keeping the speed high but maintaining control. I'm not sure how they can do that without keeping you on rails
Nice demo. Sonic's behaviour in relation to the ground (especially the loops) looks impressive and for once we see a fan made 3D Sonic game that doesn't look like the engine is struggling to keep Sonic on the terrain. The problem is I think most people are looking at Sonic the wrong way. If you ever played Sonic 2, you'll notice that you don't need insanely-uncontrollable-speeds to have an awesome Sonic experience. I'd even go as far as to say that going anywhere faster than Sonic 2's stop speed is detrimental... as it stops being a platformer and becomes a subpar racing game. I'm writing to you because you seem to be one of the few fan dev that knows what he's doing in terms of building an engine for this kind of thing. So here's some criticisms: - Sonic is going way too fast... like WAY too fast. Even worse when you turn into Super Sonic. - There are too many instances where you either jump or use a spring and the camera points upwards instead of downwards. You need to know where you're going to land on for accurate attacks (or hitting the powerup TVs instead of using homing attacks). This is probably the most important thing for Sonic to succeed in 3D: don't rely on gimmicks or mechanics to allow the players to control Sonic. He should be 100% controllable with precision just by the directional stick and a jump button. Homing attacks and speed boosts should only supplement the gameplay, not BE the gameplay. - You should probably give Sonic an entirely new model/rig for when he's charging up a spin dash; As far as I remember, he's always been a perfectly blue sphere (apply squash and stretch to give it a good spongy feel). Having him merely rotate in place makes it look odd. Peace!
First, let's get one thing straight. Because this is your opinion i will respect it, but there are some things i disagree on. Sonic 1,2 and 3 and Knuckles were always about High-speed platforming with good level design that rewards exploration. Generations brought that into 3D and modern Sonic was fast, as fast as this Sonic (Super Sonic is still way too fast here, it's called GAMEplay for a reason). Like it or not, speed is the only thing that sets Sonic apart. So, Sonic should be fast, but, just as you said, speed should not come at the cost of control or level design.
I'd argue that it was more about momentum than it was about speed. Not to mention that it was one of the few platformers with multiple paths that ranged from fast-but-hard-to-keep-up to slow-yet-simple-to-play. To me, that's what set the (original) series apart. I couldn't tell you much about modern Sonic games because I believe that Sega pretty much did everything wrong. Too much gameplay on rails, too many characters, too many cutscenes, too many bugs, weird plots, weird controls and broken camera. The Sonic fanbase is probably the most spread out, considering that there are so many games that are drastically different from one another that everyone seems to have a different idea of how Sonic games should REALLY be about. The way I see it, you can't go wrong by going back to square one. Sega tried that with Sonic 4 and I liked it but then they had to screw it up with Sonic 4:ep2 with god-awful "with tails" mechanics. As much as I prefer the 2D Sonics, I do believe that a 3D Sonic can be amazing, I just haven't seen one that I liked yet.
The ideal of having a fire shield, lightning shield and water shield was cool. I remember those 3 shields first appeared in Sonic The Hedgehog 3. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 was one of the best Sonic The Hedgehog games.
With some tweaks from professionals this could be amazing, the terrain twisting is exactly what Ive wanted in a 3D sonic, in old 2d sonic games you had a certain momentum where you could use timing on a jump to rocket forwards or upwards faster, this game seems to get that right, collision is off but can be improved
Sonic in a sandbox game wouldnt work. thats just awkward. Sonic is better off with just simple zones & about getting high scores like arcade style, as it already is. That best suits Sonic's fast pace platforming game-play style.
wow this looked so cool. good job! visuals, music, massive gameplay environment. A bit rough but with some polishing this can reinvigorate the Sonic series. Sonic Team should hire y'all!
THIS IS AWESOME!! the remixes, the art style, and SUPER SONIC!! nice touch having His World instumental version as Super Sonic theme, and underwater in 3D? not since Sonic Adventure! though it has a hub world feel to it
George Miles it is not stupid...it's better. It is superior, more intelligent, more appropriate for the series, and most of all it makes the most sense. The fact that this concept hasn't been touched upon in the actual studios, *that* is stupid.
Dude, you nailed the physics - they capture the feel of Sonic games perfectly. Despite the fact that the level seems to be a work in progress, the layout is beautiful. These are the things that are far more important to games than having the best visuals and celebrity voice overs - average games with great gameplay crush beautiful games with mediocre gameplay, and this seems perfect in both areas. This video sums up what's missing in the industry today. Please make the next Sonic.
I absolutely adore how people in this comment section are all like "dis luks better then anything sega haz relesd in yers" and "sega, tak nots", but if SEGA _did_ release something like this, they'd bash the hell out of it. Anyways this looks pretty nice for a spin-off, but for an official main game? No thanks. Sonic was never really about exploration in the first place. Just my personal opinion though.
George Miles I respect your opinion. I guess exploration would be neat for something like the Werehog, but I never really liked the Treasure Hunting stages.
George Miles Unleashed and Generations did that perfectly. A lot of speed with some platforming (especially Generations as it's 2D sections were more platforming based when Unleashed's 2D sections had you going really fast with not much platforming). What I'm asking for is a Boost game. Pretty much everything Unleashed gave us in the daytime stages.

Anyway.) Well i'd rather have Boost gameplay too, but Lost World formula could be amazing as well. I don't think they should continuously make boost games all the time either,i like how Sonic changes gameplays sometimes.
This is the best 3d sonic game I've ever seen. Hear me out guys, this is the 1st time we get to see sonic break free from the 2D plane he's been constricted onto for the last decade! Sandboxing his environment is exactly what we need to make him more playable. this kinda looks crossup mix of mirror's edge with it's 3D platforming mechanics and the speed of sonic. Maybe DICE should help SEGA with the next game hehe.
+AfroSnackey This is ok, it needs more platforming and if this is gonna be a stage it needs to be structured in a way where you know where you are going. I feel that something like this would sere as a great hub world. as a stage, the potential is there, but Sonic has always been about getting from point A to B and what you experience while doing it.
Andre Gallo Personally I feel that if they made a sonic game the way Mirror's edge made their games (imagine it in 3rd person) the Sonic franchise would make a change for the better. It's just that when JoJoxGamer said every Sonic after that, that's not what i meant. Graphically, it's in 3d but it's still constrained on a 2D plane with the camera behind him. What I was interested in was the ability to traverse in a 3d environment much like the Mirror's Edge series or Mario64 while keeping the famous aspect of speed we enjoy from sonic and this Tech demo shows an concept sonic has been lacking for decades.
AfroSnackey I agree that Sonic has been stuck in race track like stages. I feel like Sonic needs to be in a open world, but it needs to be in a way where you know where you are going at all times.
Wow. This vid of green hill zone blew me away. If Sega recreated the first sonic game like this, it would be epic. Except for the locations of the chaos emeralds. You have to go through the secret stages in order to get them.
Amusingly enough, Sega has actually hired many fans to work on their games recently. Like the recent re-release of Sonic CD used an engine that was made entirely by a fan, and likewise, Sonic 4 Episode 2 did the same thing.
Holy shit this looks amazing. This is something way better sega has given us recently. If sega can't make a good sonic game for the everybody, than I guess we'll have to make our own
+ultimatecartoon There are tonnes of 'indie devs', solo programmers, one-man-crews and so forth, who all could make a better sonic game than recent titles to come out, see Sonic Boom, Lost World, etc. That said, nobody can make a game for everyone, much less a sonic game for everyone.
To tell the truth, its not SEGA that's messing up the games, it's the fans, and the deadlines, i always remembered when i used to play ROBLOX back in 2012, people would complain and complain about the updates not coming and starting riots, it would drive the creator crazy, and then they'd just quit because of the peer pressure, it's the exact same with SEGA, but they don't quit, (thank god) when the fans aren't the reason, it'll be the deadlines, when the first 3-D sonic game was announced they had a very close deadline, so they rushed it, and the game came out horrible, but i bet that with the help of developers like these, SEGA can turn the sonic franchise back around, i hope so too, i've always been a fan of sonic, since i was little, sonic heroes was my childhood, but that doesn't mean it had no flaws, hopefully they make a game that'll turn the tables on popular games like CoD and GTA V
for everybody saying ''wow, this is amazing, very hard to make!'' no, the hardest thing to make here is just the sonic model and his movement, the rest is the easy-ness of UDK
This kinda looks like what a Sonic CD level would look like if it were brought to 3D. Just throw around robot generators and Metal Sonic holograms at random places and let the player explore around trying to find them, that would be very fun!
and then look at the mistakes from sonic 06, everything basicly, and then make a good game like This, with an open world to run around in (i dont know wtf i just wrote, even a month or so later)
I love the stripes of this zone and your shields look way past cool! But Knuckles won't be happy you stole the emeralds from his shrine! Lol, can't wait to see more of your work!
Well this proves that sega for some mysterious reason just don't want to give us a great sonic game. If some fans can make this, what on earth is stopping the full staff of sonic team from releasing a game that at least controls properly? The controls here seem so fluid, even with the boost it looks so easy to control sonic and turn wherever you want. Don't tell me that sega has been trying their best to program a game decently (which they've proved many years ago that they can) but just can't make it...
The lack of direction would really bug me if this were an actual level, but this would definitely be a cool idea for a hub world or something. Major props to the creators!
This isn't an official title? That explains why I thought it actually looked great. Fucking Sonic Team man, looking at this video made me think Sonic games were actually returning to it's roots.
Oh my God, these comments are murdering me. Hell no, this looks messy and untidy as fuck. It just looks like someone said "We'll make a big world, and just put hills 'n shit in it!" And this is not good game design, either. There is no set path, and that just makes it awful. Where do you go? Where is the goal? Oh there it is- Ahhhhh, I boosted away... And I'll get downvoted into oblivion because Sonic fanbase. Ugh, I'm lucky I'm on the sensible side of it...
Seriously??? "I actually thought this was a real game and I got excited" because I thought they actually made a good Sonic game obviously. Why are YOU here since you're the one who doesn't like this video.
Because, I watched the video and I made an opinion about it. Why must the internet hate opinions?! And a good Sonic game?! Hello?! Have you been under a rock?! Sonic Generations Sonic Colours Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed Sonic Runners And others that has not come to my mind yet.
Mineupfast lol exactly. You're the one who questioned my opinion in the first place, all I did was point out the hypocrisy of the question by asking it back. But now you get it so all is well. Meh, I didn't like any of those games. Generations was cool but still not as great as Adventure 2 Battle IMO. My favorite is still Sonic 3& Knuckles but I love both Adventures and the first two Advance games.

Finally breaking the 2D plane? Are you forgetting a about sonic 3D Blast and every other 3D Sonic game after it?...?
But this one did it with style. The others were extremely poor presentations.

Personally I feel that if they made a sonic game the way Mirror's edge made their games (imagine it in 3rd person) the Sonic franchise would make a change for the better.
This game has the right idea
+BloodSonicFlux Your comment is best comment.
Sonic Kirby Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week.
Sonic sucks comments (no reason why) 110 likes sonic is a good game( with proof) 2 likes wth
It probably won't give COD or GTA a run for their money
Beautiful. Just beautiful. ;_;
soni
Sonic?
Ya it,s nice
It,s good
sonic
for everybody saying ''wow, this is amazing, very hard to make!''
no, the hardest thing to make here is just the sonic model and his movement, the rest is the easy-ness of UDK
at least you're one of the more positive ones about it
who’s come back now that we’re finally getting the open world sonic game we wanted?
being able to run freely is the main reason why i like sonic games. it makes me feel so happy
Dude... imagine an open-world, Skyrim-ZeldaWiiU-style Sonic game.
*Creams*
I know right?! That would be awesome!
Hu
I liked the super sonic part
Who else thought he was going to turn into super sonic when he collected all the emeralds ??
kd 2k 5:02
Yup
This is pretty nice... some sound effects could use a lil adjusting but it looks beautiful and seems to have a nice control. Well done.
This kinda looks like what a Sonic CD level would look like if it were brought to 3D. Just throw around robot generators and Metal Sonic holograms at random places and let the player explore around trying to find them, that would be very fun!
the sonic frontiers i wanted
Sega, take notes.
and then look at the mistakes from sonic 06, everything basicly, and then make a good game like This, with an open world to run around in
(i dont know wtf i just wrote, even a month or so later)
Eh, I dunno, SEGA (if they weren't stoopid) would do a little better.
Zawmbbeh no doubts, if it was sega who made this, they´d be owning a google plex amount of money
ExplodeintheTNT You don't know how big googolplex is, do you?
It's 10^10^100.
Zawmbbeh i do, jesus fucking christ, i never fucking asked about what it is,
OMG WTF IS THIS!? I WANT IT! lol
Let's hope Sonic Frontiers is the game we've been waiting for 🙏
It has been several years since i have seen this one, the freaking nostalgia wave hit me like a truck
Now this is what Sonic 06 should have been.
This was made by fans a decade ago and has more passion life and art design then frontiers , what the fuck is sega doing
Hey This Could Work As A Sonic RPG
Fantastic idea!
I love the stripes of this zone and your shields look way past cool! But Knuckles won't be happy you stole the emeralds from his shrine! Lol, can't wait to see more of your work!
Even with this video having the fucking 8 years I still love it was the first Sonic fan game I saw, and it makes me an incredible nostalgia. READY? GO
Well this proves that sega for some mysterious reason just don't want to give us a great sonic game.
0:13 screw you bonus stages im gonna steal this way
xD
2019?? :>
I can't be the only one who instinctively thought you were dead when you were falling towards the water.
Very nice work.
The lack of direction would really bug me if this were an actual level, but this would definitely be a cool idea for a hub world or something. Major props to the creators!
Not bad. But I'm not so sure about the choice of super sonic music... One of the classic themes would be better.
0:03 PS2 Gameplay
3 words: Take Notes SEGA
(Am i the only one who thinks RabbidLuigi everytime they hear "His World"?)
I loved watching this as a kid and fills me with so much nostalgia.😊
10year old and this amount of perfection? Man!
GG
This isn't an official title? That explains why I thought it actually looked great. Fucking Sonic Team man, looking at this video made me think Sonic games were actually returning to it's roots.
"Returning to it's roots" xD
Sonic Team made the good games, while other pepole made... HORRIBLE GAMES (Sonic colors and Generations were ok)
Returning to it's roots? That's 2D gameplay, which is what has been happening for the past few years.
They stole a Picture from CryZenx then said "Its time we gave players a new Adventure" (CRYZenx recreated the Adventure2 Chao Garden)
Already you heard about sonic unleashed boi?
Oh my God, these comments are murdering me.
Hell no, this looks messy and untidy as fuck. It just looks like someone said "We'll make a big world, and just put hills 'n shit in it!"
And this is not good game design, either. There is no set path, and that just makes it awful. Where do you go? Where is the goal? Oh there it is- Ahhhhh, I boosted away...
And I'll get downvoted into oblivion because Sonic fanbase. Ugh, I'm lucky I'm on the sensible side of it...
I actually thought this was a real game and I got excited. That says a lot because I hate Sonic games.
If you hate Sonic games, why are you here? .-.
Sonic Generations
Sonic Colours
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
Sonic Runners
And others that has not come to my mind yet.
The sonic frontiers prototype looks wild man
I have a ton of nostalgia watching this
I lots of my memory in this video the first time i was watching this I was 7 years old and today I have 17 years old
