I enjoyed every minute of this. Dan was masterful as an interviewer, and Skip was open and vulnerable in a way we don't typically see from people of his stature. Thank you both for this incredible conversation and storytelling.
Dan is dope because he's super empathic, in touch with and fascinated by humanity. His goal is to connect and relate. As much or more of an artist as anyone. Love you, Lebotard!
@@mordecaidrake oh I am not making an excuse. I’m a big Lebron fan so he is pretty insufferable to me. It just helps bring clarity to who he is. Which makes me dislike him less. Which I think is good in general
A legendary troll. the shit talking he receives is mostly justified. Everyone isnt cool with trolls. When he's acting like a normal person, he's perfectly fine.
Skip is a King Maker. Pulled Steven A from no man’s land on FOX after leaving ESPN , saved Shannon from the doldrums after being ousted at CBS, gave Jemele Hill a platform to speak truth to power, Cari Champion the first Black Woman to moderate a sports behemoth, and Joy Taylor rescued from local radio in Miami. Skip isn’t the nicest person in the world, but he gave a lot of folks some life changing opportunities. Everyone of these aforementioned individuals have platforms that we can only dream of. Objectively goes a long ways.
The absolutely saddest thing is that generation of man that Skip is referring to when he talks about his father, someone so "masculine" they are jealous of the love his wife shows his son has generational impacts to this day. You can see it in our politics, culture, and sports.
Somewhere along the timeline, whether that be the Boomers or Gen X, the defined lines of masculinity and femininity were distorted and marred. The stoicism of man, the feeling of but control of emotions by man, the yearning for responsibility & accountability by man, the reluctance to ever give in to emotional anger! The society that raised me implied that masculinity is impulsive aggression, selfishness, propensity for violence, and whimsical altering between disrespectful and egoistic behavior, letting emotions fly etc LOL WHICH IS ALL FEMININE NOT MASCULINE!
So much grief eating, Dan turned into Mr. Creosote at the end. But seriously, to echo what some others have observed, there seems to be a sadness in Skip's tone - as if he knows it's "over" and there will be no second act. The abysmal ratings that followed Shannon's departure from "Undisputed" showed that there's little demand for Skip's shtick. And I say this as someone who never hated him - I kinda liked him going back to 2002, when I was on a trip in SF and came across a San Jose Mercury News column where he called Ravens HC Brian Billick "Brian Bile Duct". One more thing to add, the story of Darrell Porter was truly sad. I even remember watching a Braves/Cardinals game in the early 80s (I'm from ATL) and the St. Louis crowd actually booed him. The announcers said the the Cardinal fans were still angry at losing the beloved Ted Simmons in exchange for Porter. St. Louis Cardinal fans can truly be insufferable.
Even though he’s not sports related, Skips brother Rick is an incredible personality and chef. I wish they touched more on the sibling success and relationship.
Skip’s said in the past they really don’t even talk anymore, or something along those lines. Wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t touched on because there is no relationship anymore.
@@patriotsfan122480 Given the really visceral hatred Skip has for their dad, I think it's not hard to see that Rick going into food like their dad is something Skip cannot tolerate or abide.
@@MinisterManDan I agree with that assessment. Overall, from this interview and what I recall from what he previously wrote about his early life, he’s always kept his whole family at a distance. Like he mentions how he would more often be at his grandmothers’ and only occasionally would his brother and sister also go. Once he went to college he left and never looked back, while his siblings stayed behind and dealt with their mother, pretty sure he also mentioned never asking them how they felt about either of their parents. All of this also makes sense to me in the way that he used that separation to protect himself growing up. Once Rick took to the kitchen, it was probably easier for a perceived bond to grow between them, his sister was the only girl but based on how he described his mother growing up (vain and self-absorbed, always wanting the attention), I don’t imagine she was doted on too much by her. Still, only they can speak on their own experiences and perceptions with their family, just as only Skip can speak on his, but it’s clear from Skips’ side he wasn’t very close to them. He built that wall to shield himself, as often happens, and from the other side of it I’m not sure how often Rick has spoken about Skip or their relationship either.
Great interview Dan interesting seeing a different Side of skip and were able to pull things out of him to show why he is the way he is. Makes you understand to a certain point why he is the way he is. Great Job. Love your shows Love how your mind works.
I think that stems from the fact that he always seemed most passionate about the things he was so clearly wrong about, and the only things he was very passionate and right about, were topics that basically everyone universally agreed on. The majority of things he was right about weren’t things he or most people really gave a shit about either way, or that weren’t really debatable or contested in any way.
the way Dan shifts his view to the camera when Skip says "the real 23 not that fake 23" made me chuckle. I feel you there Dan, it's like when your Grandparents give ya credit but still tell ya you should've took their advice lol. I for one got Jordan as the GOAT but always loved LeBron cus I literally feel like I grew up with dude, same with Kobe. I was still YOUNG YOUNG but the time MJ was on his last three peat but I seen so much of him throughout the years being a ball fan/former player before my right knee went to trash that it was just like "Yeah, Mama there goes that bad man" anytime he was on. Either way Jordan, Kobe, and LeBron all top 5, the real question is the positioning and who everyone's other 2 IMO.
Sooo skip has great fear of becoming his negative and discouraging dad, but doesn’t see how he becomes his dad every time he criticizes the players he admits hea insanely jealous of… like his father was jealous of him… but therapy isn’t needed 😂😂😂😂
Supreme Debate featuring Skip Bayless v David Samson with Pablo hosting Instead of Cold Pizza it's Frozen Pizza featuring Stugotz and Greg Cote. Freezing cold takes!
He wrote an article about his background back when he first joined FS1. It also told his background (obviously from his own perspective) and his early influences in life. Basically much of what was mentioned in this interview.
it's interesting that Skip grew up never hearing he was good enough & that's very much how he constantly attacks his favorite targets that he's been ruthless with to build his career into what it is today. i have no use for the man and his on-screen persona/shows, but this interview at least helps me understand his motives. i'm sure he's a nice man off camera for the most part. but the trauma he suffered growing up oozes out of him with the way he talks about other ppl. i'd say he'd do well to get himself some actual therapy, but i'm not sure what good it'd do him given his self-protections he's built up.
Honestly he probably made all that shit up. Just like he said he didn’t call Troy gay but actually he did. It’s okay though because Troy was “the hero”. I trust Cris Carter more than him as well. My favorite was that Shannon was pushed out though. I actually think he is so lost in his sauce that he believes the stuff he says. Don’t take anything he says serious it’s a waste of brain power.
This isn't over yet and it's fantastic. But it's freaking dripping in irony - skips calls his father evil. His father beat him down for not being good enough... and skip makes a living being his father towards players. He's right, from one of his earlier points. He did turn out like his father, and I don't think he even realizes it with the way he tears down athletes.
@@TheAmazingGordohaven’t finished the interview yet, but I think he does recognize it if he said “I’ll never go to therapy” or something along those lines. He doesn’t want to confront those issues any more than he already has, for whatever reason he uses to excuse himself from it (success, age, seeing is as a weakness, etc.)

And he also likes Jordan because narcissistic people like looking in the mirror. It helps him feel validation if the GOAT is an insecure hater as well. And since when is cutthroat admirable?
