as someone with Dyslexia, I appreciate your extra effort to make things, particularly clear and easy for your son so few people understand how Dyslexics learn best while everyone is different most of us do learn best by example instead of reading I myself, learn best by watching someone do it than learning about it myself and in cases where I legally can try it with them there then get instant feedback on what I did wrong so I can correct.

On your comment on letting customers know about doing extra: In a customer relationship training long ago, I was posed "If you delivered good customer service and the customer doesn't know, have you delivered good customer service?" The answer was no, because in future behavior, they'll act as if it wasn't. Customers that understand and appreciate value are gold, part of your job is to mine for and create them.

Love the honesty as you work through the process without post production filters. You make it real for all your viewers. Question: Why does it take weeks to do the same project in our own home when you can knock it out in 8 hours on a job site? I’ve been milking a sub panel in my basement for almost a month. 😊

that's an easy answer.... when you do it every day for a living and you have proper stock / tools in your work van, it can go much faster. Also consider the repetition of doing a particular task leaves little room for thinking. You already thought that problem through 100 times and you already know the answer.... boom, you are done. (and thinking about what you may have missed)

Little tip for cutting drywall, if you're worried about hitting stuff in the wall use a box cutter and a straight edge. The box cutter blade is only half an inch in length and you're less likely to strike any wire inside the wall. Yeah it takes a little longer to cut but in the long run it beats having to rerun a new wire or put an additional box in the wall for a splice if you do happen to hit a wire or a pipeline.

Yeah, your numbers on the L1 Charging for the mobile adapter using the 120v/15A breaker plug gets 6mi/hr so it's 60hrs for the LR edition not 20hrs. Another way you can look at it, is if it draws 10A (which I believe is default) -> 1.2kW and it's a 75kWh charge it's 62.5hrs. The reality though is that people don't let it get down to 0 and typically charge to 80%, while you can't do that in a day, what is more realistic is for a 60mi round trip commute is plugging it in once you get home and let it top back up to that 80% point over 10 hours. But some people may have different demands.

    • @hsailer
      @hsailer ปีที่แล้ว

I think Jefferson was complaining that the 120V 15 amp outlet would take 180 hours to charge from 0 to 100%. That is undesirable, and way longer than your correction of 60 hours, which I agree with. The 20 hours you quote is from where?

I know it's a short run to the pole, but I figured they might require a standoff or guy cable between the roof and mast. In my area you can still do a service without a mast by running SER cable up to a suitable weatherhead and an anchor point on the corner of the home. BTW, this area must not be fully on the 2020 NEC because that 50 amp outlet would need to be GFCI if it wasn't hard wired to the charger.

My line was standby generators, and while we subbed out most of the wiring (just not set up for that aspect) I had to know most of the code and do the troubleshooting when necessary. That means inspecting every new installation to make sure both the gas and electric was up to code, plus everything worked as advertised when we left.... including "hands on" to double check all terminations. Oh, the stories I could tell!

28:40 I know in Canada I always had to put duct seal around the conductors as they left the weather hood, down here in the states it took me a while to get used to the fact it wasn't required. I thought it may have just been a texas/new mexico thing because rain is less common but now I see you don't need duct seal around the service conductors either.

Otherwise we must install an external disconnect . I prefer a disconnect anyways as here we must have utility company do disconnect or reconnect of power if we have any issues later and with disconnect I can turn off power to panel without having to notify utility company and wait on them

FYI, I don't know about where you're at, but around here I have seen a guy be required to re-pull an entire site when an inspector saw a guy use a knife to open the external coating on a cable.
They said he could nick the wire insulation and not know it until there is an issue. And since he had no way of proving which places it had been done that way, they made him re-pull or at least check every one. 😅 IDK if they actually made him do it, we were only on-site one day. Just figured I would mention it.
I used to do it all the time on our own jobs, but not since that day 😂

Perhaps I missed it but why are you installing an outdoor panel inside?
I can agree with the lineman about the noisiness of the 345kv lines. A nature preserve near me has a main transmission line running through it (the wires are on steel towers much higher than any wood pole around here so I'm assuming 345kv as well or something close). There are a few spots where the paths cross under these lines. You can definitely hear them buzzing as you walk beneath them.

It was "plug on neutral ready" but I don't see it and it also didn't come with a ground bar. Came with the main and some breakers but not anything else. If you said I missed in the video. What do you torque the lugs to? Thank you for teaching your kid with his hands. I failed out of school because I learn by my hands. I wanted to be an electrician but went to the union hall and they put a test in front of me and I bombed it not long after I rewired a house. I was 15.. I only wish I had someone that would have took me in as an apprentice. Owner of a computer shop did and the rest is a 25 year history. Oh besides grounding out all the high voltage in a transmitter I have to leave a ground on it when inside it because (I am told) the tower builds static enough it can kill you like the guy described.

The ones I've seen have indications that it's bad termination from installers not used to properly torquing down the lugs. See 29:40 in this video for someone stressing how important it is.

It is interesting that in the US that sparkies are doing the connection from incoming overhead cabling including the meter mounting pad; in the UK the local network operators install the installation's main fuse, then a meter is installed by another company, followed by an isolator if you are lucky; nobody apart from the network operator or metering company (yes, they are different sadly) should be touching anything on the supply side of the isolator.
One thing the UK really fell short on in my opinion is how the meters are so modular, if one has to be replaced here the tails are removed and refitted to the new unit, rather than popping a unit out and inserting a new one (I know, a little bit more to it than that).

    • @markjones9366

External disconnects I still feel they should be used more so than pulling the meter I have had to educate firemen in my area what they look like and how to operate them outside my home. The main problem and the NEC 2020 requires and I see often is that many are not clearly marked and labeled as emergency disconnects. What about disconnects for other sources of power solar/PV, generators each will require their own disconnect and be grouped together in the same area I do think they would be better outdoors than easily accessible indoors especially if multiple disconnects are needed for the future. It’s a kind of future proofing…
On the ground rod I now always install them in their own box and housing which is clearly marked gets rid of the many ways gardening can damage continuity of those ground conductors… did you do a ground resistance test it is something overlooked in many installs. Many just avoid having to do this by installing more than one ground rod but I hate doing things which are not verifiable and testable to get resistance down below 25ohms.

180 hours if he runs it to empty, most EV users don't. The average car sits in the garage for over 12 hours during work week and even longer over the weekend. Chevy Bolt owner I know just uses 110v and over the course of the week the car gets fully charge. It really depends on the average miles you drive everyday.

The spinning rotors on helicopters will build up a static charge also. Hollywood doesn't show that often enough to keep the public safe. Grab a landing bird or a something being lowered to the ground without grounding it first, winding up on your butt would be getting off easy.

yeah it all sounds great wait till we get short on electricity from the grid. electric companies will start charging a much higher rate and time of day rates so you will have to charge in middle of night. the daytime rates will go sky high when everyone wants air conditioning so we will all be paying for the extra demand of electric cars

Did I miss something? I like your videos and you generally do great work but I have to criticize this job. I would NOT have let you install an outdoor panel inside like that, for the cost of this job, your getting an indoor panel that fits cleanly. No buts about it, an indoor panel would not only sit flush with the wall but cover that drywall cut, prevent drafts around the box, and provide a nice access door. It's my OCD, I know, but just seems like you were cutting corners.
