Oliver 77 Cold Start

  • This old gal has been sitting for just at three years and its time to wake her up. The gas is old but it was treated with Sta-Bil, and I usually shut off the gas and let the float bowl run dry when they are expected to sit for an extended time. This one has her peculiarities needing a full throttle setting and full choke during a cold start. The first thing after checking oil and fuel level that needs to be done in the process of 'waking up' is usually a thorough cleaning of the battery terminals. Corrosion is a major detriment when you need all the juice you can get on a cold start. You don't necessarily need coolant, but a fellow should be ready to fill or top one off within a few minutes of starting though.
    Somewhere around 5:40 maybe you saw me jerk and flip my hand away from the starter....remember the red wasps that nailed me on the last video on the Massey Harris 30? Well, I think the one that stung me during that video must have found a new hiding place on the backside of the starter on this one. Just then it flew out and landed on my left hand but I was quick enough to flip it away before it exacted its vengeance for me killing all its buddies last week !! Dang it though, he got away to try and get me on the next one as well.
    All four tires were low and while the weak battery was getting a refill of DC voltage from the charger, the air hose was drug around the corner and the tires were then topped off. Luckily none were flat. The front two look a bit like my head though...balding with wisps of rubber falling off with each use !! Not that chunks of rubber fall off my noggin....but hair does, and quite frequently too. The Missus thinks my tractor is sexy....must be because of the balding tires huh. But, I digress once again...now back to the start up.
    Later I got to thinking about the shifting pattern and to be honest, I may have to go check and see because I may have interchanged two of the gears as they were rattled off. If so my apologies are extended to the Oliver buffs out there that will pick up on that instantly. I always found that the dual neutral somewhat of an aggravation and this one is more-so aggravating because of the tightness of the gear train. Sitting still it is nearly impossible to go from low neutral to high neutral. Know how the Ford 800 has a vertical neutral where the shifting lever moves up and down in neutral instead of left and right? This gear pattern has two left and right neutrals and one fore and aft neutral connecting them. So the neutral pattern is in the shape of a capital "I" with the cross bars across the top and bottom. Confused ? You may have to buy an old Oliver to see for yourself then....LOL.
    Btw, you know the '56 Ford F-250 you didn't see in the other lean to ?? Well you didn't see the '66 Mustang coupe behind that old truck either. Its a one owner 65,000 mile 289 v-8 three speed floor shift all original coupe....but once again digression is a dishonor to the topic of the video but they DO share one thing....green. Hahahaha we will get it out one of these days for a freshening up. But for now we are doing tractors and trucks.....
    As always, don't do as I say or as I do. Just do your own thing but if there is something you see that is beneficial to your project at hand, by all means take and run with it !! We are all here to have fun and share the bits and pieces of our day to day experiences. This and all my videos are for entertainment purposes only and they are done because its fun to do them. That's all. So Enter At Your Own Risk, Caution Wet Floor, No Running Poolside, PPE Required, You Are Entering a Hard Hat Area and remember to smile at a stranger....it'll make the day better for both of you.
    I think "Cheers" is Canadian for "I'm Outta Here".....LOL Enjoy.

      ....what F-250...?? It must be a Canadian thing...mentioning seeing something that's not there. Ol Dave said just about the same thing. lol. I'm glad you guys don't mine me joking with you !! You are quite welcome. The 77 is very long snooted and even the front wheels extend beyond the frame as compared to the little MH 101 Jr, Super and the newer 30's. It's because of the long nosed 6 banger I guess. Hang in there because there just may be another start up coming soon !!

    Good evening Sir !!! That was a very nice video !!! Love the Massey Harris and also Oliver's tractor !!! I found however that on the oliver tractor, the clutch pedal is tuff to use compare to other tractors since they are not organimiquely well placed. That part on your text about you tractor's sexy and your missus like it was very funny and yes i agree about the Canadian Cheers is the same meaning as i'm outta of here !!! LOL Please Sir have a great week !!! Cheers !!! Oupss I forgot that Ford f 250 and the car behind will be nice to see in closer look !!! LOL

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right about the aggravating clutch and brake pedal locations Dave. The brakes is what I find difficult though. The two pedals are separated but connected with the pivoting third pedal in the center. Push the center pad to apply both brakes but on my old, old, old 70 the knuckles are worn so bad that the center bar falls out of the sockets and you can only apply one or the other not both. But then I think of how hard it is to negotiate anything but going straight with the old John Deeres and overlook the shortcomings of the Ollie. lol.
      What F250...?? I didn't see one of those....where was it? I think your eyes are playing tricks on you..... Have a great week Dave, and....maybe you should consider glasses that won't let you see things that aren't really there. LOL

    I used to work on a nursery for 12 years and I remember driving one of those oliver's with a set of 2 flat wagons to get orders of plants for customers they had 4 of these tractors.

      That would've been a good job. We have a Christmas tree/pumpkin farm three miles down the road. About 200 acres and they run all different kinds of tractors to haul customers out to the fields to cut trees or pick pumpkins. Not a single Massey or Oliver though....

Of course the 66 is a 4 cylinder. But I also have a couple 6 cylinder Massey Harris's too. Thanks for watching and commenting !!

      Tractorman44 I hear ya! My father in law is a tobacco framer. Him and his father were crazy about Olivers! And he has passed the love for them to me! There’s a Super 66 and a 60 behind my house. He’s restored an 88 Standard, 88 Super, 70, and a 77. Then there’s 77’s, 770’s, and a 1600 gas that are used on the farm today.

      @@cannonballrepair7940 man that is cool !! I haven't restored ANY yet, but over the years I've concentrated on making them run instead of pretty because I just never seemed to have the time. Always one thing or another sucking away the time. I do want to get to so one before I cash in the chips. I traded 4 pieces of duct for one of the running 70's and a service call on an a/c unit for another 70. A buddy of mine was in Kissimmee Florida delivering a tractor to a guy that had the 66 Orchard sitting there. He called me and said the guy would take 500 for it so he hauled it home for me instead of running back empty !! Luck was with me on that one.

      That old '56 was my Dads...its got a 272 V-8 with 292 heads on it. Iirc, it has about 72,000 miles on it....but they are 'farm truck' miles. It may be stuck from sitting, but I've got a 292 in a '63 Ford back in the woods sitting in reserve. I have an Ollie 88 sitting on the sawmill...50'' circular mill with 30' bed. @@tractorman4461 Hahaha Good old farm truck miles. Short trips towing things, a lot of idling, and off the road travel more than on. yeah when they sit for quite awhile usually a valve or 2 are stuck but with a couple hours work more often than not I bet that old Ford would roar right back to life. Ever watch Johnathan W on TH-cam? Like you, he has an amazing knack for bringing old iron back to life just in his case it's usually cars and trucks. haha We gotta keep this old stuff going, everything is throwaway now days. I read some where they have 50 pounds worth of wiring in them today's new cars and John Deere claims they still own their tractors after you buy them because they own the ''software'' that runs them. Imagine letting this new stuff sit for decades like old iron. Just one mouse could destroy them creating wiring faults nearly impossible to trace. Sorry I tend to ramble. haha Really appreciate hearing the stories behind all of your old iron as it's part of it's charm. I always read your descriptions, thanks so much for making time to write them!

    Great startup. I haven't found a tractor I don't like. 😆
    I don't know how you remember all the details of starting and transmission quirks of your tractors. Starting preference for me is try a few setting until it pops then adjust. 😕
    The Ford/Glover 8N has a Hupp over under drive. I seldom drive in anthing more than mid i.e. straight thru range on the Hupp. 2nd gear on the trans is all I need for as short a travel distance available on a 1/2 acre. In low on the Hupp and 1st gear on the trans. I can step off and get a cup of coffee before It travels 10 feet. In high/4th it will do close to 50. Tried that just once. Steering as tight as I could get it, new front tires, and a rebuild on the brakes, it was a nail biter. I ran motorcycles up over a hundred, almost always legally. 😯 Never did I feel as close to God as when the Ford was wide open and rolling down Dunks Road. Actually I figured I'd be standiing in front of him explaining past practice before I got the tractor stopped.
    My friend, and former neighbor, Mike has Olivers. Fine machines. Lots of power and easy to drive. His Dad had an 88 that I think Mike has now.
    My friend and neighbor on the other side, Bob has John Deeres. Plow day in Union City was always fun to drive one of my tractors to. I got to see 50 or 60 people having fun working their butts off to plow another neighbors field and having a ball doing it.
    Good video and a sweet running tractor.
    Watch for those hornets. One means there is another bunch close by.
    Note: The following is just what works for me and I'm no expert.
    I noticed you have the video link on the end of your video. I have found that having two of them improves the number of views on the channel. I use the Last Video Published and the Recommended For Viewer setting.
    Recommended For Viewer does the best.
    Cards are a good thing too. Half of the viewers are watching on a phone. They don't see the full Descripition unless they look for it. Cards show the little white rectangle in the upper right of the screen. They show on phones really well. Click on it to follow the link to another video or channel. It's not a sure thing but it adds a few percentage points to your viewership.
    Keep em crankin. 😆😎

      Well...you know how I compare tractors to women a lot of times? Remember the time when we were all young and dumb in our teens and were lucky (or unlucky) enough to date two or three girls at the same time? You had to remember what you said to or where you went with this one or that one or there would be real trouble real quick. I just apply that same mental acuity to the starting processes of these old girls. lol. They are all different so you just remember how to make them happy so they'll either cook for you or pull the plow across the field. Now let me clarify to any ladies that may accidentally read this comment....it is totally tongue in cheek !!
      Thanks for the tips on the end of screen. I will try that soon, but I haven't even seen the 'cards' about which you speak. I'll have to find that. Thank you sir for stopping in and especially for commenting !!

      Thanks Ed for the comment. I religiously use a product called PRI-G additive in the gas for all things that run on gas. It's the best product I've found yet to extend the shelf life of today's modern formulated fuels. I try though to never run fuel with alcohol, but sometimes there's not a choice.

      Cockshutt was kinda the Canadian Oliver. There are very few around here and are my wife's favorite tractor next to the Silver King. She actually bought this Ollie for me at a yard sale one day. Actually...she stole it if I was to tell you what she paid for it plus a 3 point wood splitter, rear scoop, 6' blade and some other stuff as well. Good woman she is, don't you think Gator. These row crops look a bit scary but they are only marginally more dangerous on hillsides if you employ good practices and keep your eyes open. I've had these tricycles on some pretty steep places....and they turn a much tighter radius as well in the woods or out in the field.

      Gator's World Cockshutt tractors were repainted Olivers sold in Canada, until 1946 when they built their own. They continued on until the 60s when they yet again became repainted Olivers. My guess is you had a Canadian Cockshutt 70 row crop, which was identical to an American Oliver 70, or possibly an Oliver with a Cockshutt engine swapped in. Either way, they had a brass tag on the engine that said either Oliver or Cockshutt 70 depending on what they were sold as.

    What a great old Oliver Tractorman44! Makes me kick myself for not buying that one I saw for one day. Just like you, it said, "This is Oliver 77 and I'm outta here"! Just too quick for my brain thought, which lacks sometimes, like then. I could have driven it home and built a tractor shed around it. Painted it Oliver green like the tractor and had my morning cuppaJO sittin on the seat and listening to it purr! But alas! But one of these days I'm going to get something and restore it back to cherry and get the mail everyday up my 500 foot lane! Or may be Ill soup it up a bit and drive it your way for my morning JO! Don't recon it will take too long. I'll put a stout chain on it and attach it to your state and a chain from here to your place and it won't take long to create Mosylvania44! I do believe it could work. Might have to make a big saw to release the grip and may be a good dolly, eh? It could be called the Tractor State and all license plates would start with 44, 44A, 44B, 44C and so on. Once we'd get to 44Z that would be enough. So Thanks Kindly Tractorman 44 and my Best to You and the 44 Clan,,,,and Stan! Stan the 44 clan man! What could be better and with a cuppaJO in hand. A FINE as Frogs Hair on Chicken Lips on a Cue Ball Week to ya! DaveyJO with a gas can waiting to pour it in a Tractor and head West! Tractorman44 A Good Week to You too Tractorman44! Last Thursday and Friday my friend Steve and I torn out the old windows, found rot and ants, rebuild a frame for the two 5x6 picture windows and got them installed, caulked and taped off. I tell ya Wendell, gettin old can be felt when heavy stuff is involved. My friend Dan came by to help carry the two windows from Steve's truck, around the house and propped up until we could get them in place. Dan is our age and Steve is 33 and a good craftsman. I've kind of taken him under my wing, given him some tools and support. He's got a sweet 11/2 year old daughter and one on the way and lives right in town. Well Steve had one end and the two old boys on the other. Anyway, these last two days I've prepared the roves for cedar shingles. They are white cedar and ain't the best for shingles but after there up and dry, DaveyJO will coat them with some Thompsons water seal or wood life. Plus I'm laying tar paper to cover half the course and at every course. Yesterday I decided to include cedar shingles on a small roof the new overhang joins. I'll send a pic for sure! I've been working these last few nights with a flash light in my mouth. Ahhhhhhh! Remember the days when 9:00 was the start of the night. Now it's around 8 when the light comes out. So now it's completely ready for the shingles, tar papered and flashed. I got the shingles at Lowes for $26.00 a bundle as opposed to $100 a bundle for the best stuff. But the new overhang is on the outside and wouldn't effect the room anyway. But those windows make it feel like there are no windows. The deer in the fall and winter walk right by them almost every day. Just so they don't get spooked and decided the windows look like more woods. A few friends told me they heard of this happening. I'll also have to move a few bird feeders because when the leaves fall that 12ft. of window will look like a place to fly. May be a couple life sized cut outs of Tractorman44 could be stood outside as a bird in the window preventive measure, eh? I will raise me cup your way shortly. And do you remember why the skeleton didn't cross the road to get to the other side? Cuz he didn't have the guts. So on this note and as the JO slowly goes down me gullet, I wish you a good night and great tomorrow! Me BEST to all at the 44 Headquarters and to Stan! DaveyJO waiting for me tractor to come home.

      KSHE 95 has what they call their “Daily dose of Led Zepplin” when they play a battery of three LZ songs in a row. It’s the same time every day. LOL. I love blaring music in the background while I work but with copyright laws we have to be careful on you tube. So it’s gotta be real low so they don’t think you’re using their music to make money. Thanks for the comment, by the way.

    You Know, The more of the Oliver tractors that I see, The better that like them. I often wondered why Ford never did use the 300 cid engines in their tractors. Those have to be without doubt one of toughest engines ever made. It seems like the harder that the 300s are worked - The better that they run. After all of the V8 engines that I have owned, I have really developed a live for the Inline 6 cylinder engines.

      Yes, I too really like the much smoother running shorter stroke, higher rpm of the sixes. The Oliver Super 88 with the 265 cu in six is a powerhouse too. The little 77 is fitted with a 193 cu in six. I have a 66 orchard that's a four and a couple 70's that are sixes as well. But you are right the 300 in line six that was in Ford trucks would have been a killer combo in a tractor !! I even have a couple Massey Harris sixes and they too are smoooooth.

      And now the old 77 is back in the lean-to waiting on its turn in the shop. I was using it to drag old equipment up some steep inclines at the neighbors and it kept plugging the fuel inlet screen on the sediment bowl with rust flakes. So its going to get the electrolysis treatment and internal coating so it can go back to work. Thanks Daniel for the visit.

This old Ollie spent the previous there or four years sharing daily duties with a pair of Massey 44’s. So don’t feel too bad... it’s almost Ollie’s turn again. Thanks for watching and for commenting. The 77 engine is actually a 193ci Oliver-Waukesha. The 70 had a 201ci Continental engine. While the 70 has more cubes, the 77 has more horsepower because it has a higher full throttle speed.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      By golly, you got me. I have two 70's and two 77's, and for some reason always thought they were the same bore and stroke, but with the 77 rated higher in hp because as you say, the higher rpm at WOT. So far I've been lucky enough to have not been inside one of the Olivers engine. In addition, thee is an old 88 and a 66 orchard living in the sheds as well. Thanks for the clarification Jutin, it is well received. What's odd is the Massey Harris 33's have a 201 Continental 4 banger vs the 6 holer in the Ollie.

    How is there hydraulics in the back?

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 77 has a factory hydraulic pump similar to the Farmalls and the control valve/handle is below the steering wheel Matt. The three point is a bit cheesy. Not exceptionally heavy duty at all. IIRC, it was called Hydra-Lectric. It never did work, so I don't know how it interlocked with equipment. We just dismantled it all and use it as a normal three point, except the implement doesn't 'float'
      over the terrain. You have to be ready with the control valve traversing a low spot or the rear wheel with the lesser traction will spin.

    • @mattstruck7010

However, yesterday I was using this old gal to tug an old 63 Ford truck up out of the woods and had such a tough time because of the rust blocking up the inlet screen on the sediment bowl about every three minutes on the dot. Sooooo....I think she's going to get an electrolysis job on the gas tank then a quick interior sealing. Thanks Chris for offering the well received suggestion. Take care sir.
