I have had mine for 12mths next week. I bought the 64 Essence as I have always bought base model cars and finally wanted something with a few extras. I've done 19300kms without any issues. I am not fussed about lack of resale as I plan on keeping it for at least 7 years. Only thing I don't like is not being able to have in the setting I drive in as soon as I start off. I get in and turn off LKA and traffic sign assist then turn on OPD everytime.
Agreed - this is why enabling Over The Air updates is so important. However I get the niggling feeling that factory support for the MG4 in the future will be less than spectacular.
@@zwieseler it does not work very well. Maybe that depends on countries, but ... as an example, there is a 30km/h speed limit in front of my home. I live in a city. My mg4 says i can go 120 there. The opposite happens too, when I am on a highway and there is an exit with speed limit signs, it will tell me the speed limit of the exit.
See Carsales has them starting at $35k used (Excite 64). Interesting to see those prices from October after the new pricing is established. In any event, depreciation is standard for all new cars, so it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone
There's a difference between regular depreciation, and massive depreciation brought on by a company slashing prices. I doubt the regular price will go back to $40,000 for an Excite 51, who would buy one at that price?
@@bozugarage All true. Tesla did the same thing recently... Actually, I see the Excite51s are starting at $30k used on Carsales - which appears to be the new pricing? Whether or not the used ones actually sell for that price is another matter, I suppose; hard to see how they would
I tested a MG4 about 5 months ago (Essence 64) and really liked it. But the $47k asking price was a too much, and 40k Excite price was not realistic. I remember thinking that the base model should be around $34k, and each model up should increase by $3-4k. So Essence model should around $40k, 77 Long Range around $44 and XPower around $48. Reality finally set in, and MG has responded to the market. As long as they stay around the current price point, I am planning to purchase one in the Feb to April timeframe.
I do not regret buying my MG4 51 Excite here in NZ. At the time last year I received a $7015 rebate, which the National Govt discontinued end of 2023. At the time the price was 46,990 NZD, currently in NZ it is still $42,990, so I am still $3,000 cheaper than todays price. I charge at night for FREE, used DC charging twice in a year cost less than $10. In addition has powered my whole house when I have had (3 in a year) power cuts, 1 lasting a couple of days. It would be nice to have more bling (360 cameras, better self driving, etc) but do not miss it. Have wireless Android Auto dongle. Very happy with purchase. Agreed about OTA updates, they have them in EU.
Awesome car for the money. Hopefully they bring a refresh with the bigger, faster screen Chinese models get to Australia soon. Reckon the Essence 64 is a bit steep though, too close in price to options like the BYD Seal. 51 Excite with the LFP battery is the pick of the bunch
Super cheap EV motoring at low 30s, and the best driving small EV for sure. Bigger faster screen would be a bonus, the recently upgraded 15" screen in the BYD Atto 3 is at least twice the size of the MG4s
Plenty of reports that dealerships are desperate enough to get you into a 77 at that price already. I've seen some invoices for 2023 Xpowers for $41,000 driveaway at a certain dealer in NSW.
I've had my MG4 for nearly as long as you and I don't feel as burned by the recent price drops. I've had the better part of 12 months to enjoy the car and benefit from the savings on running costs (not to mention the loss of EV rebates here in NSW mean the recent price cuts are more like 6k, not 10k). Increased depreciation is a fairly normal thing for early adopters. Had I purchased one 2 weeks ago, without any EV rebates, only to see 10k price drops shortly after, I'd be *very* unhappy. It's poor form from MG to make such an enormous cut in such a short time. Is it worse than death by 1000 price cuts like Tesla? I'm not sure. Good review on the pros/cons.
The problem is, price drops are a very simplistic and unsophisticated way to move your product. Any first year marketing or business student could've given MG a dozen different ways to discount/move their product without trashing residual values or trashing your brand. Dropping the price $10,000 is what a 5 year old would've suggested - which is why I think this recent move is a directive from the motherland, rather than a carefully conceived and planned strategy from a local business planner. A shame since it'll tarnish the brand going forward. Thanks for the positive feedback on the review it's always appreciated :)
Did you manage to resolve the phantom braking issue? Has it reoccurred ever since? How often did you experience it Went for a test drive and the same happened to me😩 , if it’s a regular occurrence then it’s a huge problem .
It's happened exactly twice in the year we've owned it. And because there's no Over The Air updates for the MG4, I expect it to happen again. If it happened on your test drive that's not good. Maybe grab another EV for a test drive, and try to replicate the same scenario at the same place, to see if it happens again? It's doesn't happen often but when it does it's pretty jarring,
You will get some if the onboard computer does a mistake processing the cameras. It can be caused by dirt on camera, bad alignment, bad system calibration and so on. That also happens on other cars. Mine did it a couple of times but it hadnt been properly processed before delivery. I asked for an alignment, asked to be there when done, and asked to do it myself after i wasnt satisfied twice with their "thats good enough" attitude. I think the new model prices will stay relatively low. How is the aircon in these? OK in the back? I recently hired an ATTO 3 in Brisbane and it's aircon was sub-par.
The AC is *too* cold if you're not careful. Even without any rear-seat vents it still cools the back of the car really well. Not having large amounts of glass helps.
No rear aircon vents in the MG4 (or rear lights, or arm rests, or any other creature comforts...) but being a small cabin the aircon cools everything pretty well. The precooling feature via the app also helps a lot on hot days
We were dead set on buying a 51 Excite demo, for about the same price as the new price dropped to a few weeks later. We wouldn’t have been too upset at the deal, even after the price drop, as the demo had almost no km on it anyway. Anyway, we instead bought a 2019 M3 Standard Range Plus with 69,000 km on the clock, from Tesla. We already have a 2021 M3 Long Range, bought new, so we knew what to expect. We did the deal within a couple of days, including trade-in and change-over price. The trade was our 2021 MG ZSEV. We didn’t go anywhere near a dealership. It was all done over the phone, and the Tesla app. I think for the same asking price, about $34,000, on the road, delivered to us, trade-in taken away on the return run, we got a way better car. It drives like a new one. It gets all the updates, of course. A couple of minor faults were fixed by Tesla under warranty. It’s the very earliest version to come to Australia, so it has the smallest battery fitted to an M3, 50 kWh. I’d imagine range is around that of the MG4 51 Excite. On a recent road trip, using the Tesla Supercharger network, the SR+ was range anxiety free. No problems at all. The Tesla Service Centre in Adelaide have been fantastic to deal with over the 3.5 years we’ve had our original M3. We’re stoked to be in the privileged position of having 2 Teslas. I’m sure we’d have been happy with the MG4. We were pretty keen, until our change of mind.
Great buy, the Tesla is a much more polished and well supported car than the MG4. We definitely prefer my model 3 for long distance driving over the MG4.
Secondhand model 3s are in the $3x,000 price bracket now, though probably close to being out of 4 year warranty. Or just wait untl 2025 and buy an MG4 lightly used for $20,000?

Entirely fine for city driving. Most EVs feel better/faster than their equivalent ICE cars. For example, this is a far far better choice than an entry level corolla, which is a slow FWD ICE car. However the corolla will have much better retained value than an MG4, especially in Australia where MG have trashed the price of their own products.
My 23 Essence has never lost either star button after just over a year. It even remembered them when the software was updated. Here across the ditch MG have NOT reduced the price (they briefly did a NZ$2000 drop I think) I suspect that the rumours of a major update might be correct. Hence the return to the original price next month?? They wouldnt have needed to clear stock here as our EV new market collapsed with the arrival of our anti EV new govt last Nov.
Crazy is right. It's a mad slash and burn - yes you'll move plenty of stock at this price, but at what cost in the long run? No one will pay full price in the future, and will simply wait until more desperate massive fire clearance sales return.
Those are still the mk1 model. dont they sell the mk2 in australia ? They only sold the mk1 here (France, Europe) for 6 months. i got an essence 64 with the heat pump. Paid about 30K here. I have about 20,000km on it, over a year and a half. bought the same charger, and it charges at 2/2.2K so that has nore to do with your electricity system. The software has a lot of bugs. Did you notice no buttons on the steering wheel work when mirror cameras are on for example ? The phone app is kind of meh but it does the job. The latest software update for the car is supposed to have the planner integrated. I dont care about deprecation; I needed a car at that point, i got a lot of incentives (which disappeared now). a tesla 3 sure is better, but it costs 15k more. And i dont think it is worth 15k more. Pretty sure the MG4 has OTA for infotainment system. Maybe not the entry level. It has one competitor here, the BYD. the mg4 is better. BTW I noticed range got better with the latest imbedded software version (not the one with the planner, the previous one), if you have an old version, try it. Probably because it has a revised speed governor ( i use mine mostly on highways). TL;DR: car is good, but the software is pretty bad, and that includes "driving aids" unfortunately, esp. the lane assist that tried to throw me in a ditch a couple of times. That seems fixed on newer firmware though. stil, not something I expect from a car that is publicly sold.
@@bozugarage OTA dont matter when there arent updates ... and TBH i'd rather not have OTA when the software has such obvious bugs. I would not trust its safety level. Updates from USB stick is perfectly ok for me. But again, there arent updates to begin with
The "fast charging" is atrocious. It has a bit less range, and it costs a good 10k more. You do you ... i like charging at 130KW on a tesla charger. You will be lucky to get 10 to 20...

Agreed - decent enough car, not good software, and no over the air updates suck.
@@bozugarage OTA dont matter when there arent updates ... and TBH i'd rather not have OTA when the software has such obvious bugs. I would not trust its safety level. Updates from USB stick is perfectly ok for me. But again, there arent updates to begin with
10 year warranty only applies to the MY23 model - the MY24 get the 7 year warranty. I know because I just ordered MY23 Essence 64
I purchased 2024 MY and got the 10yr warranty here in Au
No I wont be buying the MG 4.I like Renault Megane ETech.Excellent interior/exterior
I've never been in an Etech but the interior does look nice -I might have to try and get one for a review!
The "fast charging" is atrocious. It has a bit less range, and it costs a good 10k more. You do you ... i like charging at 130KW on a tesla charger. You will be lucky to get 10 to 20...
Just say no to cheap Chinese rubbish.
