- Had a blast in LA for the Beers & Cameras x The Darkroom Photography meetup in Joshua Tree National Park. I had a couple of extra days after the meetup to hang out, so Chris, Rafael, and I linked up to shoot some portraits in a makeshift studio using artificial lighting. This was my first time shooting in a studio with a strobe. Big thanks to Chris and Rafael for showing me the ropes!

Oh, my boy is gonna be scanning at home. Hell yes. Rad portraits. Just shot flash at a wedding this weekend for the first time at it was eye opening for sure. Something I never messed around with due to nerves. You killed it.

The photo taken by Pentax is the best shot of this series, picture quality, expression, lighting...,a real classic example in studio! Sometimes the most natural photo comes from a lot of interaction and playful friends, it happens in between the flashes.

Man oh man. I'm biased as a mainly-studio portrait photographer, but this was my absolute favorite video of yours. I absolutely love the expressions and character in these photos (and seeing how the negatives were scanned). I'd love to one day shoot portraits in a studio with you!

Great video and great vibes! I would have love to know more about the gear used in this! I saw a pocket wizard that's about it lol! I've been using the Essential Film Holder for scanning since it's cheap but that Negative Supply kit would be such an upgrade!

Great fun video dude! I've been getting interested in shooting with flash and shooting in studio. I just bought a little Contax flash that I can use with all my cameras. Hoping to use it on the street when the light gets a little lower also SUPER SURPRISED to hear this was your first time developing yourself! Pretty fun huh?

Cool! I've never used studio lighting, either, so much new to explore. The scanning part at the end was interesting, looking forward to your furture experience with that. Although I don't shoot much film these days, by Dad gave me probably 1,000 slides that he took over his lifetime (he's 98 and still kicking today) and I need to sort through and scan many of them at some point. The big misconception about P67 sync speed is mainly due to people completely forgetting that there ARE leaf shutter lenses for the P67 that go to 1/500s, which is even better than the 1/400s on the Mamiyas :)

When using the flash in the studio, which interface should we choose?

a warning, and note here for others watching, they HAVE to do the flash at 1/15th, the Pentax is a focal plane BODY, with only a 1/60th sync speed!!, the RZ has a LEAF shutter (sync speed is 1/500th, aka top speed), the Leica is 1/125th or 1/250th as a 'normal' slr focal plane camera; if the focal plane bodies are taken faster than sync speed the curtain doesn't open fully before the flash exposes the film, leaving a ' half-open blind' scinario.

This was good stuff. It kinda seems to me that back in the day there wasn't a fear of film with flash and today there seems to be like a hurdle. Better put it seems like there was a body of knowledge not passed from older studio film photographers to the newer film shooters and so the "new school" is having to figure it out. Maybe I'm over thinking it. lol
Btw, have you ever thought of putting tape over the MLU switch to prevent accidents?

Hey bro, great video. I have been developing and scanning my film since I started 3 years ago and my setup is super dialed in now. If you ever want to make a short trip up to Port Townsend I can show you my setup and help you get going if you are interested.
I’ve always wanted to shoot in a studio but I have no idea where to start. Buy lights I guess and some film stock?
I believe investing in a strobe is a good first step!
Didn't know about that parfocal lens for the Mamiya, that's a really cool thing! It would be really dope if you got one of the Leaf Shutter lenses for the Pentax and compared it with the Mamiya on fast sync speeds.

I preffered the Takumar lenses on Pentax to the Mamiya lenses.. they seemed to have distortion..
I liked what you All achieved. I don't like speedlight portraits! I found using slow s l o w speeds, get's better real portaits! Use low light, 1/8th, 1/15th makes wonderful portaits. Our faces and muscles constantly in motion! The slight blurring softens! Doing Platow is not one to copy. Almost caricatures! 28mm lens close up! Very close up! It can be brilliant like Russian President! Scary! The slap is way out! Even if in Role Play, make sure understood! One light is enough! I've used candle, single lamp overhead. Medium format will/ought to have better tones! I prefer small camera, any 35mm format! Leica Digital are too freaking expensive! This quest for detail, absolute sharpness is negative! Oh! mqybe 1 out of 5 exposures can be OK! I used Big Fat Pentax. It's too heavy and I missed my smaller lenses.. even the 105mm is tiny compared.If you disagee, try my experiment first! Enjoy your videos. seen on sattelite TV, but mneeds comment on laptop! Bravo!

I use soft-boxes and/or reflective umbrellas for lighting studio portraits. Thanks to your video, I now understand how shoot-through umbrellas differ.
I shoot half-length, head & shoulder, and face portraits with Mamiya RB67 with the following lenses:
250mm f/4.5
180mm f/4.5
150mm f/4 soft focus
140mm f/4.5 macro
I also have the 100-200mm f/5.2 zoom that I use as a backup lens but have never had to use it. Thanks to your video, I now have more confidence in my backup portrait lens.
I shoot a Leica M6 and M10 with the following lenses:
90mm f/2
35mm f/1.4
21mm f/1.4
I occasionally use the 90 for half-length and head & shoulder portraits.
I occasionally use the 35mm for group portraits and full-length portraits.
I have never used the 21mm for portraits. Thanks to your video, I may try it for some “artsy” portraits.
Grab a Fuji GFX 50R while there’s still a deal and adapt a lens on it for “scanning”

I haven't done much proper studio stuff myself (I mean I am just an amateur having fun), but it is always so much fun mucking about with flash. It is my strong opinion now that using film indoors without a flash is usually almost always a bad idea lol (well unless you are on a tripod etc). If you get the chance, I definitely recommend Mat Marrash and Tariq'es studio shoot video. I learned a lot about lighting from it: th-cam.com/video/J6uCqHlQ_k0/w-d-xo.html )
Dayum Rafael is kinda baller with all those M cameras AND a Canon R5 scanning setup. But yeah, I love the results I tend to get out of my (far more bootlegged) dslr setup. The lab scans just don't compare in terms of resolution (unless you pay a lot extra and go for a tiff scan). My personal recommendations: If you do go for it, don't feel too bad if you can't shell out for an expensive high res camera. For medium format you can compensate for that at least by panorama stitching (so for 6x7 for example, I tend to see about 35 Mega pixels which isn't too bad given my A7-3 is a 24Mp camera e.g. www.flickr.com/photos/191721832@N04/51988656820/in/album-72177720297927684/ )

Very cool video... I've been planning to shoot film in studio too, specially TMAX. I really like the results of the umbrella setup. And man, you did relax and loose up a lot after the slap 😂 maybe was the way you've edit the video, but it was the feeling I got 😂 congrats on the video and photos ✨

About scanning your own film: I've been doing it since day one (not developping though) and I agree with you, you can get amazing results if you have a good digital camera. At first I was doing it with a Canon EOS 6D, the scans were okay but since I bought the Sony A7R2 they're on a whole new level of detail! BUT I've also compared my scans with scans from a lab and the main difference I found was when I cranked up some underexposed shots: my grain was hideous as hell (very colorful) and theirs was beautiful (almost "monochromatic" but we're talking about colour film here so it's hard to explain). Apart from that, the image size and the sharpness was almot identical!
Oh good to know! Yeah it was an awesome experience. Definitely want to invest in an at-home setup

Hey Brae,
If you want to do scanning at home on the cheap with even higher resolution than you can get out of the R5, go for the Olympus em5 Mark 2. Pair that with a Canon FD adapter, 25 mm worth of extension tube, and a 50mm F/3.5 FD macro.
the entire list above should cost you somewhere around $400, lower if you are lucky. HOWEVER that little Olympus will get you 64 megapixel raw pixel shift images in 4:3 format, which is closer to your 67. Match that with the essential film holder and you are 95% of the way to the rig you just used, for a tiny fraction of the price:) Cheers.
