My Dad Shoots Film for the First Time in 20 Years

  • Without a doubt, the most special video I've had the pleasure of making. I took my dad to one of his favorite places on earth and had him shoot a few rolls of film through my Bronica SQ. This was his first time finishing a roll of film in 20 years. My dad originally got me in to photography and kickstarted my love for film, so to return the favor in a small way meant a lot to me. It was also a very memorable and important day together as the last decade has been difficult for my entire family with the loss of my mother in 2008. Hope you enjoy this special episode :)

Brae this was absolutely incredible. Literally in tears here. I had no idea about your mom, I’m sorry for your loss. This is such a special video man, thank you for making it. My grandad gave me my first film camera and I wish I could’ve done the same thing with him. This is only going to get more special as the years go by ♥️ much love.

It's so cool how your Dad seems to just be trying out something he had long not done anymore and the photos immediately reflect his past experience... the photographs instantly had this feeling of "yeah, this was taken by a photographer" :D
and I looove the message of the story at the end Brae! :)

Brae, this video deserves an award of some kind! Thank you for sharing this personal story, and for the excellent videography and the outstanding images. Your dad has an excellent eye--I really enjoy his emphasis on the wide angle, his placing importance on the context, and his generous use of negative space. Your dad seems like a really nice, cool guy.

Canon Beach! Yes, now I remember! That was one place my dad took my mom and I as I had a 3 day hangover from my 21st birthday. I feel really fortunate to have had an amazing trip there. My dad worked for an airline and we had flight privileges flying out from the midwest. Cancer would take both my parents just a few years later. So glad I could get out to the Redwoods and coast (near Santa Cruz) with my son in his 20s last year. Oh, loved the music choices for this vid.

It is so rare that you find a video that you will think about for weeks and months to come. What a beautiful approach to photography you and your Dad share. I got into photography because of my Dad and unfortunately I lost him at a young age and there's nothing I'd dream for more than a day like this with my Dad. What a gorgeous video, just simply one of the most beautiful reminders to live in the moment. I'd love to see what my Dad's reaction to my photography is and I've recently been having a lot of issues with dealing with my grief and this video was a brilliant reminder that things will be ok. It is days like the day you experienced with your Dad that are the reason people should keep going. Thank you for this video, even though I'm absolutely bawling my eyes out

I have no words as most of them have already been said by the wonderful people in the comments. All I can say is that this video is one of the many things I will hold close and dear to me because it has two reminders. First one being that fathers should also be given flowers. Second is, never forget the experience. This is by far one of the most humbling videos I have ever watched. I'm gonna go mop the floor of my tears now. Luh you Brae, and thanks again for uploading.

couple years back my grandma emotionally carried me through the rock bottom of my life and photography is what has mended our bonds and granted us so many good memories. Brae...That was pure love. My daughter and I went to the beach today to take pictures. First time I've spent time alone with her in many years. She used her phone, although she went to photography school and has the "gear". Simple. We watched the waves...did not need to say much...shot a few pictures...no bangers...just memories to remember, and just enjoyed the time. Photography allows time to focus what is on front of us.. a viewfinder that helps straighten the ups and downs, the right and the left...like your dad expressed. Good advice for life. The talk with your dad was just beautiful.. Thank you for this video...I needed it.

Sometimes you don't have the precise words to express something, sometimes you do. This time I do. This is simply beautiful. No other term could describe it better, as it has everything a story needs. It's not just a simple, well recorded and edited video, it's a whole story inside what you and your dad feel. I find it to be amazing. And so, great work, although I'm late seeing this a year after it's been published. I've loved every second of it. Thanks for sharing such an intimate and special moment with us. Watching, I couldn’t help but think of the parallels to my own journey with photography. My dad passed away suddenly when I was 16yrs old. Just a year before he had gifted me my first film camera, a Zenit E SLR. He’d seen the bug I’d caught learning photography at school and I guess he wanted to fuel the fire in my belly. Every time I take my camera out to shoot I take him with me but I’d give everything to sit with him one last time, at our favourite beach, and thank him for what he gifted me. It’s was more than a camera, it was a lifetime pursuing a passion. Thank you so much for allowing me to reminisce.

I lost my dad in 2000 and my mom in 2019. My dad wasn’t the easiest person to like or get along with, other than my mom I’m probably the only one that had something of a continuous relationship with him. I miss him but I have his old Argus C3 that I use when I’m feeling particularly emotional about something to do with him. I’m 70 now and the saddest part is that dad was the glue that held the rest of us together. With his loss we did just fly apart. Pictures and his camera are the best memories I have. Cherish them forever

You keep setting the bar higher and higher, man. A lot of videos here on TH-cam try to sell a lifestyle and make people feel like we need more if we let it (more gear, followers, travel, clarity slider 😂), and it can weigh on my our mental health sometimes. Your videos always do the complete opposite. They make me feel inspired and motivated to create the way I want. Production quality has been off the charts, and as far as I’m concerned you’re the best visual storyteller on here. Thank you to both you and your dad for this one.

Dude.......... your videos just keep getting better and better. I keep saying each one is my favorite but I don't think this one can be topped. This was just.... BEAUTIFUL. I literally called out of work one day and just binge watched a butt load of your videos. Didn't intend to. I literally just got sucked into it. Your narration skills are beautiful and soothing, the filming and editing is casual yet, feel so next level, and your photo's being a film head as myself, are just so addictive to see. That's coming from someone that isn't really interested in a lot of people's work. It really takes a special photographer to catch my attention. Someone that is actually passionate about it as myself and most people just don't have that energy. You sir, you have it. Thank you so much for taking the time to film these videos and take so many photo's. I'm sure this lifestyle is expensive between the film and gas prices right now. I'm not sure what you do for work but apparently it's working hahah I hope you continue to make videos for more time to come. If not, of course, I respect that. We all get burnt out from time to time. As always take care man!

Damn! You made me cry. What a beautiful video! I've been taking trips with my mum, creating memories with her and making images to record those special trips. Although I do love the WA coast, there's just something magical about the OR coast. Keep doing what you do. I'll keep watching.

Such a special video. The cinematogrophy was brilliant and the story so beautiful and full of real emotions. It's not easy to make your viewers feel emotinoally touched after a video but I really felt it with this one. Makes me miss the coast!

What a beautiful relationship! Intertwined by a shared love of photography in a place that's dear to your family, your dad and yourself. It's always amazing not only to share but be part of someone's legacy. I have Bronica SQ, which needs a little TLC and cleaning. Its images and ease of use has helped make some great memories. Great video, appreciated your ability to tell a great story Brae. #Londonlovesyou

Great video. It's one that you will treasure and revisit many times during your life. My father was also the person who inspired me to take pictures later in my life. Going back through the slides my father took all through the years not only provides me with countless memories but also provided memories for many others that were also in the photos. Photos are important for many reasons. They are the best gift you can give. I also have mainly used the digital process over the last several years. You and your father have now made we want to grab my medium format film cameras and start shooting with them again. Thank you again for making this video.
