The fact that Harold Ramis died in 2014 and with the technology we have today they were able to bring him back for this film is astounding to me. Fun fact: the body double for Egon was actually Ivan Reitman the original director of Ghostbusters 1 and 2. They did a great job with this movie, a true love letter to the fans of the originals and there is a scheduled sequel for 2023. As for Ghostbusters 2016 it would be interesting to see your thoughts on how bad and disrespectful it is but it is not necessary. Great reaction!

Several people actually doubled Egon. Ivan did in a couple of scenes, but the main guy that did is the actor that played the warden from The Shawshank Redemption.

Since Afterlife was released, sadly Ivan Reitman (the Director of the 1st 2 Ghostbusters and Producer of Afterlife) passed away as well to join Harold in the real Afterlife. I don't think you got that Harold had died at your reaction time which was the reason for the FOR HAROLD dedication. This movie was written and directed by Ivan Reitman's son, Jason Reitman (Ivan produced it). Jason was IN Part 2 (in the 80s) as a kid along with his sister, Catherine (Ivan's daughter) portraying, respectively, the rude child at the opening birthday party and a girl that is part of Egon's experiments. McKenna Grace was fantastic as Phoebe in this movie playing an Egon Mini Me as his granddaughter. Finn was ok- but Eleven would've been a much better fighter vs. the ghosts vs. his new girlfriend. (Yes- a joke). There IS a sequel to Afterlife being made and the last end credit scene set it up perfectly. I hated the reboot. The trailer to the reboot is still one of the most disliked TH-cam videos of all time. It's just a feminist, woke version and not written by any of the brilliant originals -although Ivan did produce it.

The big important things to realize about this movie are that Harold Ramis died in 2014. He had sort of a falling out with the other guys, and they never really talked again for like 30 years.
Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd wrote the original movies.
Ivan Reitman directed the original movies.
This movie was directed by Jason Reitman, Ivan's son.
Jason was the original Ghostbusters fan. He grew up on the set of the original movies, and saw it all before the movies ever even came out in theaters.
Jason also played the annoying little kid in Ghostbusters 2 who mocks the Ghostbusters at the birthday party.
Jason Reitman is a pretty successful director in his own right, but as an indie movie director. This is the first big franchise movie that he ever made. And it's the only time he ever worked with his father. They made this movie together.
This movie was done a year or two before it was released, but it was delayed in release due to the pandemic.
A few months after Afterlife was released in theaters, earlier this year, Ivan Reitman himself passed away.
Ivan Reitman is also the one who plays Egon in this movie - standing in for his old friend Harold, who passed away in 2014.
So this movie is Jason Reitman's first and final project with his father, his way of honoring his father's work, their way of honoring Harold Ramis and the original Ghostbusters, and it ended up being a swan song for Ivan Reitman himself.
This movie means a crazy amount more than anybody really expected it to.
Every time I see the ending of this movie it punches me in the gut.
I get the impression that Jason Reitman only really intended to make this one Ghostbusters movie.
Because, like I said, he's more of an indie director and kind of likes to do his own thing.
But this movie was obviously very successful, and Sony is a movie studio that can basically never get anything right, so this movie is kind of a miracle for them.
They've also established Ghost Corps, kind of a whole branch of Sony Pictures dedicated to developing Ghostbusters. And Jason Reitman seems to now more or less be the head of it.
As this ending implies, the Ghostbusters head back to New York City.
Ghostbusters 4 has already been confirmed and announced with a release date that I believe is next Christmasish, and it's confirmed that it will take place in New York once again, and it's confirmed that Jason Reitman will return to direct.
It seems that Jason has now embraced and adopted his father's legacy as his own to keep his father's legacy alive.
I say all of that partially to emphasize the insane planet-sized solid steel balls that Jason and Ivan Reitman had in daring to resurrect Egon Spengler in this movie.
It was playing with nuclear fire.
It was a move so ready to go catastrophically horrifically wrong if they fucked it up even slightly. It would have been seen as horrifically disrespectful and it would have infuriated a PLANET full of Ghostbusters fans.
The fact that they pulled it off so fucking perfectly and elegantly in a way that makes me cry every goddamn time I see this movie. And I've seen it like probably nine times now.....
    It's a miracle.
It's something that SHOULD NOT work.
The fact that they made it work somehow is mind-boggling.
And, hell, let's not forget to recognize that this movie was carried almost entirely by a 13-year-old girl.
Obviously, she was backed by a cast of Amazing side characters - Podcast, her brother, her mom, Paul Rudd, the original Ghostbusters, JK Simmons as Ivo Shandor, and Olivia Wilde as Gozer.... They were all amazing and perfect....
....But McKenna Grace, as Phoebe, carried like 80% of this movie.
When Paul Rudd and Podcast were around, and even a lot of times with her mom and brother, she was always the/a main character.
She also wrote and performed the song that plays over the credits with the ghost in the haunted house.
The movie was supposed to come out, but then it got delayed and during the delay she basically started a music career, and the song was so good that they went back and put it in the movie before it finally got released.
So McKenna Grace is basically another miracle that this movie pulled off. Because child actors are pretty hit and miss as it is.
But even the REALLY good ones can rarely carry something basically by themselves.
As a side note, I think they just announced a new Ghostbusters animated series and a Ghostbusters animated movie at the same time that they announced Ghostbusters 4.
So Ghost Corps seems to be going into overdrive now, and we are hopefully about to return to '80s levels of Ghostbusters goodness.
It really cannot be overstated how much of a PHENOMENON Ghostbusters was. People do not understand how big the Ninja Turtles were in the 80s and early 90s.
    It was like the Beatles.
    It was like Pokémon.
It was all consuming and everywhere.
And to a only very very slightly lesser degree, so was Batman and so was Ghostbusters.
The three of them basically ruled the late 80s and early 90s.
But yeah, anyhow, if you want to watch the 2016 movie, I'm on board to watch your reaction. I don't hate it. I just wouldn't say it's particularly good. I also wouldn't say it's particularly bad. It's just kind of something that exists for some reason. An odd sort of waste of time. Kind of a glimpse into what Ghostbusters could have been if made by people who didn't really know what they were doing.
A version of Ghostbusters made by people who weren't comedic geniuses.
    🤷🏻‍♂️

But you provided such great commentary on this, its really fantastic. It should be a pinned comment really, so it doesn't get lost among the other comments and you need ALL the likes.

I grew up with Ghostbusters 1 and 2, and remember being super sad at Harold's death in 2014. Also with his passing, albeit selfish, I thought ah man now there'll never be a GB 3- which I wanted forever. When I heard this movie announced I was already pretty optimistic, given the scenario and the people behind it. And I remember thinking like oh man I hope they don't do some cheesy Egon's ghost thing, at the time I thought such a concept would be a bait and in poor taste. I saw the film in theaters day 1 and I loved his build up (the small little incorporeal touches, like the chess board and the car engine.) But man lemme tell you I fckin CRIED when I saw him at the end, it was like- I cant even describe it. Even watching the ending clip now I get a bit teary. I look back and feel bad for not initially giving all involved enough credit to pull off such a concept (Egon's ghost.) But as a long time fan, and artist, they did it justice and it was beautiful. I hold this movie in very high regards because it gave me essentially what I thought was impossible. Glad you got to experience it!

Jason Reitman did a great job on this one. His dad (Ivan Reitman director of 1 & 2) consulted with him on this film and even directed some of the scenes when Jason was working on a separate set. They did a great job at honoring Harold Ramis who died in 2014. They basically took footage from Ghostbusters 1&2 and digitally aged him as a ghost. The beginning was brilliant only showing his outline and not his actual face. Jason reused some of the ghostly light show from the first one in this one. The original three ghostbusters reaction to seeing Egon was real. It was emotional for the guys not having their friend their. Bill Murray and Harold Ramis had a falling out not long after the second ghostbusters came out and was able to reconcile not long before he died. The story is great about their reconciliation. Bill Murray didn’t know his address just the town so he went to the police station and asked them where he lived and they took him over to the house.
In regards to the 2016 film it’s really something you have to see and judge for yourself. I feel they didn’t have the same chemistry that Murray, Aykroyd, Ramis & Hudson had. Some parts were good.

I’ll say that this one plucked the heart strings. After the passing of Harold Ramis fans had lost hope of a sequel.
After the 2nd film the logistics and investment into a 3rd GB took a couple of decades. It was a long time coming with a following that deserved a trilogy at least.
What was crazy is the 80’s generation grew up with the two films and the animation. The cartoon was between the time of the first and second movies so kids had grown up with knowing all the details about the Ghostbusters lore. The classic character of the ghost “Slimer” was so iconic that he had a bigger role in the 2nd movie.
I have the theory that the end credit scene is a hint that they have Slimer in the firehouse containment unit and teasing long time fans.
You should give the cartoons a watching if possible. Maybe a poll for the best or fan favorite episodes to get a sense of what the 80’s kids had at the time. It may matter before the 2016 GB.

Such a wonderful sequel! I grew up with the original and getting to see this in theaters was amazing. I took my son with me to go see it and we both loved it! That ending especially. Brings on the water works every time.

As 33 year old who grew up with the originals owning all the toys and even having my own suit and still as a fan as an adult i went to see this movie nearly 40 times and have watched the bluray nearly as many times.......i cry at the end EVERY GOD DAMN TIME!
After Harold died I never thought we would get this especially after the mess that answer the call was (I still have never watched saw the trailer that was enough to know to me its not ghostbusters)

Yes, there will be another one. Jason Reitman and his writing partner Gil Kenan announced it a couple of months ago. It is set to be released during the Christmas season in 2023. The working title of the film is "Firehouse" and that is supposed to be a hint as to what the movie is going to be centered around. As for the main cast of Afterlife, most of them, if not all, are going to be the main cast in the next one as well. They've all (mostly) confirmed as much. And Ernie Hudson as Winston is supposed to play a prominent role in it. Dan Aykroyd has also confirmed his involvement. Who knows what Bill Murray will do as he has been notorious about being very picky when it comes to his roles, especially Ghostbusters. He usually shows up on the first or second day of shooting once he has made up his mind to do a movie.
There is also an animated Ghostbusters movie that is in the works as well. Jason said it is the last thing his father was working on before his passing and was his "passion project." We don't know anything about it other than that.
An assymetrical 4-vs-1 mulitplayer GB video game is set to come out some time this year or next year with both Mr. Hudson and Mr. Aykroyd involved. It looks like it'll be really fun.
Lastly, a new animated GB TV show is coming out as well. It will be released on Netflix. Don't know much else, but fans are hoping it is a continuation of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon, or something similar to that. But it could very well be the animated misadventures of the characters from Afterlife. Who knows, but I hope it is good. But it certainly is a fantastic time to be a Ghostbusters fan right now. The franchise is in good hands with Jason Reitman at the helm. And this movie proved his dedication to it and to the fans of the series.

To start out I've been a Ghostbusters fan for as long as I can remember. Ghostbusters 2 was one of the earliest films that I remember actually watching all of the credits for. I remember getting up on Saturday mornings to watch The Real Ghostbusters which celebrated it's 36th anniversary today. Prior to one misguided Lent I owned the firehouse a proton pack a pke a trap several of the ghosts from The Real Ghostbusters playsets as well as the Ecto. I still have VHS copies of the first two films as well as the 20th anniversary re-release and the three disc addition that was released with Afterlife. I own the 2009 game on PlayStation 3 as well as the 1989 Sega Genesis game and of course the NES original. I am DEFINITELY a Ghosthead. The history of Ghostbusters sequels was.....tumultuous to say the least. After Bill(Muarry) was unsatisfied with the production of Ghostbusters 2, he had it written that any sequels would need approval from Harold, Dan, Ivan and Bill. Couple this with a falling out that Bill had with Harold over the filming of the film Groundhog Day which apparently soured the friendship between Bill and Harold. Dan started writing scripts turning them in and they would get turned down and sent back causing a 30-year period of development hell. One of the more promising treatments was the Ghostbusters going to hell while training new recruits. This would become the basis for the 2009 game that he and Harold would pen as well as would reunite every single one of the main actors as well as two from the first film and one person from the second film. The critical Acclaim of the 2009 game caused Dan to once again pursue trying to write a third film but nothing really came of it. It seemed Sony was largely uninterested in a 3rd Ghostbusters film because of Bill consistently turning down the fabled Ghostbusters 3 over the years. So Dan wrote a script treatment where Peter would be killed off in the First Act and then show up as a spectral form in the finale. This one did show promise up until Harold's death in 2014. Also in 2014 was the infamous hack of the Sony servers, which leaked many internal memos and emails. Including an early script treatment for what would eventually be known as the 2016 reboot. Emails such as correspondence between then Sony president amy pascal and 2016 director paul fieg about cutting Ivan Rietman out of production. And while Dan was very courteous during the production after the film was released to critical and box office panning by many Ghostbusters fans Dan put the blame on paul himself. The debacle even caused amy to lose her job yet a writer in her contract has allowed her to continue ruining Spider-Man. Now unlike most people I was rather excited for the 2016 reboot. Even after the teaser trailer became the most hated trailer on all of TH-cam. And after the narrative Got Hijacked by the production people of Sony(under amy's direction I have no doubt) say that anybody who didn't want to go see this film was a woman hater and a misogynist( which led to death threats against James Rolfe who is known as the Angry Video Game Nerd on TH-cam after he said he wasn't going to be watching or reviewing the film). The cold open showed promise but as I said in that film every minute that passed by the film just got worse and worse to me and at the end I was bewildered at how Sony could treat the franchise with such disrespect. They didn't even do a proper dedication to Harold. But while the hopes of Ghostbusters fans were being dashed by that "film", it turns out that Ivan and his adult son Jason who had been in the first two Ghostbusters films( although the scene with Jason and his mother in the first Ghostbusters film ended up on The Cutting Room floor until this film) was working with his dad to craft a perfect legacy sequel that was a love letter to the Ghostbusters fans. That love letter starts out as what seems like a typical coming-of-age teen story and then very much becomes a Ghostbusters film and I was here for every minute of it. The moment Egon shows up it was instant tears. I eas a blubbering mess when it said For Harold and the classic song kicked in. I do not need to say anything about how incredible the cast was. And I am happy to report that this film is getting a sequel next year. I'm excited to see what happens next

Exactly what you said about the nostalgia for those of us that watched the originals back in the 80s. Seeing those guys come back was a huge flood of emotions for me. Especially with all the drama for years about trying to get this film done and Harold passing away. This was so well done and payed tribute to the originals in such a good way. That’s why that thing from 2016 is so despised and hated. They shit all over the original. Complete disrespect with what they did in that piss poor excuse of a film if it can be even called a film.
