Use to compete in the Chimney Rock Hill Fall decades ago. I live about 35 to 40 minutes away from Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, It hurts my heart to see all the damage in western N.C. .

The people of Appalachia are not about buildings, they are an example of who WE ALL should be these people have a spirit of togetherness they are complete without material items that is worth more than anything on earth , their worth is within their hearts & that's LOVE .
stand strong in your faith brothers & sisters , GOD is with you.
    by faith alone in CHRIST:

Chimney Rock has to be repaired to some extent just because you need a bridge to get into the state park. That fact may save us! Everyone there supports the business of the state park tourists. It is a wonderful park and should be supported! Motels, restaurants, urgent care, gas stations, swimming in a cleaned up Lake Lure, all are needed. Not to mention Cider House! at the Bat Cave bridge! What would fall be without it! How many hundreds and thousands of children have learned how to press cider by watching the press? Its precious and should be supported and rebuilt, but higher up, because this will not be the last flood. The last bad one was 1996 and it took out the bridges too. This is NOT a once in a century event.

Major geological events like hurricanes change landscape for ever but the people can rebuild with the same wonderful personality. The east coast of fla looks nothing like i grew up on but it has rebuilt.

Yup, the mtns are too steep. You build in the 1000 year flood plains in the valleys. That's where all the towns are, in all the mtns, that's just reality...

We as taxpayers should not have to pay to put people right back on the river which devastated their homes and businesses. I chose to not put my house right on the creek as I am aware that creeks rise when the rains fall heavily. I chose solar power to make sure I would continue to have lights when things like this happen. Some of us made a conscious decision to have pools and jet skis instead. My wise decision makes me ineligible for assistance. Shame on me. Tiki huts should be all that is allowed on beaches, rivers and creeks. I know its lovely to look out at the river from your bedroom instead of having to walk down to the river to appreciate it.

What are taxes supposed to go to then? Why is it so horrible that taxes help other citizens? You should be complaining that they go to roads that are never fixed or take years to complete.
Where are people who live near water gonna go exactly? There are limited places in the US that experience no weather events. Go west you have wildfires, go in the middle, you have tornados, go south, you have hurricanes, and go north, you have blizzards. All of which can cause massive destruction. Should we all move to your perfect little slice of the US? All 300 million of us?

@@RacheWA1 I know its typically folk with extra cash flow who choose to live on the water front which is why I cant fish in places where I used to fish. They don't want my kind interrupting their beautiful view. I went to help people after Katrina hit gulf states and saw first hand who used to have homes on the water front and yet still want water front views. Those are the people who can afford to live most anywhere they choose. I know what you mean about road building and repairs. Its pure robbery of tax payers. My road is supposed to have 4" of asphalt yet the road is crumbling after only a few years and it is obviously only 1 1/4" in all those places. I saw the secret marks where the inspector was to take core samples and those were the only places which had 4". Millions were stolen from us without the use of guns and knives.

@@OhmSteader I can understand your point to an extent. That's a lot of coastal areas, definitely, but there are still some who simply can't afford to move. I know in North Carolina, it's almost the exact opposite, though. More well-off people live on top of the mountains, not in the gullies where a lot of the water ends up. But even then, I can't see where all of the people from the coast would go. There are millions. The taxes disguised as road maintenance bs always make me mad.

As far as I can tell, the only real taxpayer money that's being spent right now is to re-open US Highway 64, which is a major road in the area.

@OhmSteader So....@OhmSteader Are you okay with your taxes funding wars overseas? Are you okay with your taxes funding the illegal immigrants that are invading America? And killing Americans? As for me.....I'll gladly pay taxes to support my fellow Americans. I live on a beach in Florida, IF a hurricane rips my roof off, YOUR taxes doesn't pay to replace it! But I'm sure you already know that.
