  • I made this D.I.Y video for reference only. I am not a licensed nor have any background in electrical or engineering. I'm showing a swag light kit used to installing a ceiling fan on concrete masonry ceiling. I do not accept any responsibility for any damage or injuries/death due to your interpretation of this video and/or any violations or building code issues with land lord/owners/apartment condo,private dwelling, etc.
    Be smart. My outlet had a power cut off switch, which killed electrical power to the outlet I was using to plug my fan. Your situation and environment might be different, when in doubt turn off power to the outlet via electrical box.
    Items required
    -Swag light kit
    -Staple gun with 14mm cable staples
    -5/32 masonry drill bit
    -3/16 X 1 3/4 tapcon concrete anchor screws
    -Hammer drill
    -Hammer
    -Phillips screw driver
    -Power drill
    -Vacuum cleaner
    -Ladder
    -1/4 masonry drill bit to install swag hook.
    -Plastic anchor big enough to fit into -1/4 in diameter
    -Ceiling fan of your choice
    First run your plug to where you want to plug. DONT PLUG INTO WALL!!! Just measure the length needed Using the staple gun attach to the wall, flushed and taught. Work your way up the wall. Run the power wire through the swag chain as per instructions. I used my ceiling fan mounting bracket to mark 3 or 4 holes to pre drill where I wanted to mount the unit. Using the marks I drilled 2 inches deep with the 5/32 bit. Cleaned the holes with a vacuum hose. Run the swag wire through the top and into the middle of the bracket pulling all excess wire through. Reposition the mounting bracket and used the 3/16 masonry screws to secure against the ceiling with slight pressure driving the screw into the concrete. Half way in between wall and the calling fan I went ahead and used 1/4 in masonry drill with a hammer drill set to hammer and bored out a hole about 2 inches deep. Use a hammer to tap the plastic anchor flushed to the ceiling. Attach the swag hook making certain to be flushed to ceiling. From here on use the manufacturer installation instructions to complete the fan install. After all the wiring is done and everything is secured and tighten plug in the swag light to the outlet and enjoy your new ceiling fan mounted on concrete ceiling without spending hundreds or thousands of dollars in having someone do it for you. By the way if you want to get fancy you can add a wireless receiver and attach that in the canopy, there are other videos out there to show you how to do that. I will be ok with using the chains to control the light/fan.
    Thanks for watching!

      All you need to know is the skinny end of the plug is the hot (power) and the bigger slot is the neutral. If you follow the wire of one you can tell which is which. The fan comes with a wiring diagrams. There are 4 wires, 2 hot 1 neutral 1 ground. Connect the 2 hot wires from the fan with the hot wire coming from the smaller end wire of the plug and use the included wire tie screws. Repeat with the 2 neutral wires and finish 2 ground.

    not bad. but stapling the wire to the wall looks a bit sloppy and since you already had an outlet that was controlled by a wall switch you could have just run the wire through the wall at the ceiling and tapped into the outlet from inside the wall. And let switch on the wall control the light.

      @crazy4maxima  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +jose martinez it may appear that way. It's my way of using out the box thinking. It's crude but does the job. Besides ripping into the concrete ceiling and thousands of dollars I did choose this quick and very easy and functional process. I would agree with using possibly wire clips as opposed to staples, that's what I thought of when I did this. You can also krazy glue the wire to the wall and does hold. Thanks for commenting.

      At 2:24 the green is grounding wire. The two wires coming through the middle is the hot/power wire and neutral wire. Following the plug end the skinny blade is the hot/power and the longer blade is neutral. Following that you are able to connect the other end of the bare wires to the corresponding wires.
      At 8:15 the cord is ran through the base. Polarized cable is split in half. The hot end of the cable attaches to the two black wires in the fan side. The remaining natural wire is connected to the white. Green ground attached to the base by screw is connected to the bare copper wire from fan. Not shown since it's part of the installation in the owners manual. Thanks for watching

    • @crazy4maxima
      @crazy4maxima  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +offshoredreams sorry to have not replying back quicker. The answer to that, I used the black wire which are two of them in the fan, that is the power supply or hot. The white wire is the neutral. The swag kit wires have a polarity end connection. If you see the short tip is the hot and the wide tip is neutral. Carefully following the hot side of the wire that will be your power. The other side you connect the return. Once you find one side mark it hot, or cold. Then wire up accordingly. There are other TH-cam videos out there on wiring. My video was to just show how the ceiling fan was mounted without an electrical box. Thanks for viewing.

      The dangers of a ceiling fan are multiplied as the years grow. The compression of the lamp cord against the bracket is what would alarm me most as the years go on. Electrical installations are dangerous because they slowly occur.
      In your installation, once the lamp cord wears thin, micro arcing will start to occur impeding the current causing the fan to eventually either catch fire or burn the motor out, hopefully you unplug it while your sleeping.

    • @crazy4maxima

      +Mr.C accoridng to the manufacturer, the maximum wattage is 150. The fan at high speed uses 62 watts and the cfl bulbs I use are 14 watts X 3. 62 watts + 42 watts total of 104 watts. Very low. I would agree that thicker wiring would be better, but you would have to custom make a outlet socket and switch, and makes it more bulky. My current setup uses 2 bulbs at a time with very bright day light bulbs 5200k, so 62 watts motor full bast plus 28 for two bulbs, total 90 watts. Safer than a 100 or 120 watt bulb and cooler. And thank you for commenting.

      I was wondering this too... is the chain and cord what makes it a "swag kit"... could we essentially do the same with a standard extension cord modified (cut end off and wire to fan) and wire clamps? My switch has the same setup, controls the one outlet... so id just keep the switch on and use the pull chain for the lights on and off

    My ceiling fan has 3 wires white blue and black can i buy a swag kit without ground connection.?

    • @crazy4maxima
      @crazy4maxima  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fan de chavalones . YES. The one I have is similar. 2 hot and one neutral. Both hot are connected together, shared one hot wire power supply from the swag, the other neutral to the remaining wire on the swag. The swag wire has polarity. Meaning one wire is hot and one is neutral and cannot be reveresed plugged in. Y accident. The ground wire I left attached to the fan base. Please review your ceiling fan instruction manual for wiring details. If you look at the plug end one is wider and the other is narrower. Google the plug polarity and you'll see one is hot and vice versa. Follow that wire and Mark it hot or neutral. This is why i didnt go into detail about the wiring. Good luck

    with the blue concrete screws did you use the plastic anchor?

    • @crazy4maxima
      @crazy4maxima  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. That's not required and not necessary for the blue concrete anchors. The instructions are to use 5/32 masonry drill bit with hammer drill. Drilled 2 inches deep. Then use the screws and it should be tight when driven into the hole. The pastic anchor was for the swag kit hooks to secure in the ceiling. Thanks for watching.

    I don't think the chain being swagged across the ceiling is very safe when the fan is turning. I would have pulled the chain tighter across the ceiling. I'll be using cord staples across my ceiling. It's sheet rock.

    • @crazy4maxima
      @crazy4maxima  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I completely understand your concern. Yes if you arent careful and dont clear the blades it will hit. When installing I made sure to measure how long the chain and how low it would hang.
      Coming up almost 3 years in July and I have yet to have any issues, besides cleaning the dusty fan, which a vacuum cleaner or a pillow case will take care of.
      At 40k views I am happy to help or at least show the possibility of having this type of install in an ordinary nyc apartment. As a regular every day Joe, being able to work with my hands and put this install together is a great feeling, done 3x installs and enjoying the cool relief.

      Wise Monks Thanks for your comment. Honesty I agree, I wouldn't hire me as an electrician. This video was to show an alternative in adding a ceiling fan to a place where there was no wiring. That's why I chose to use swag kit, as its meant to be exposed outside the walls. I've done 3 installs in my apartment, yet to have any issues except enjoying the cool breeze and air circulation. As of this posting with over 17k views I hope to have been able to demonstrate albeit crudely done, the ability to do these project yourself.

      Wise monks the point is to have functionality where it is impossible or too expensive to install "in-wall" wiring. This is a great temporary solution for a renter who might not have the authority to rip out walls or someone with solid ceilings like this gentleman. I'd rather accept out of place wiring than burn up all summer
