Definitely BT is the best option, I’ve been using it “thuricide” since spring when I planted and I haven’t seen any budworms and it works on aphids. Doesn’t harm any beneficial or the plants. I spray weekly as a preventative, good luck!

Awesome!!! I’ve definitely noticed a decrease in budworms since I started using it. Do you regularly apply it throughout the season?

Budworms are why I gave up on petunias years ago and shifted to Million Bells. They are smaller flowers but many beautiful colors and don’t require deadheading!

Neem oil works along with picking off the caterpillars

Thanks for sharing this useful info! I'm currently battling Japanese Beetles but every time I spray it rains.

That’s been happening here too! It’s been raining every day and doesn’t look like it’s stopping any time soon.

I have planted petunias for years and never had a problem with budworms until this year. I moved to Chicago from NW Indiana, and the first two years, no problems. My petunias on my balcony near Lake Michigan were absolutely gorgeous 3 weeks ago and now they are going down fast. In one week the infestation has almost destroyed them all. I now found about 4 bud worms, but will look for more tonight. Too late for this year, but I will certainly keep an eye out for next summer. I wonder if this location on the lake has anything to do with it? Or if it is he location on the balcony about 6 stories up? Very disheartening.

Hi - I'm in WI so similar climate and petunias in hanging basket, same thing. So you actually see worms? I'm not sure if what I'm seeing are the seeds or bug poop or eggs.. but it did seem to come up suddenly, and have really lost almost all of the flowers.. Well, our summer is drawing to an end. I've always had petunias in this location and have never seen this before, so makes me think it's some kind of pathology vs seeds.. .

Thanks for this. I've been dealing w/ budworms on my petunias for a few years already...It was a war & they usually won. I didn't pot petunias for a few years because I felt so defeated by these little monsters. I decided to pot them this year and lo...budworms like crazy. I never had budworms on my petunias when I lived in Michigan, I can't figure out why, unless folks just use more intense pesticides in the area I lived? Since living in IL I have gotten them every time I pot petunias. I have found eggs under the tender leaves...worms of all sizes. Like you, I follow the poop and will usually find them. I tried to keep up, but it seems like a losing battle yet again. I do think the birds & hornets/wasps help to destroy them, even spiders, but it's not enough. I have pulled off worms as tiny as a needle about 1/4 in long to the fat ones. It's a struggle... Thanks again & GOOD LUCK!

This year, I’ve been doing a preventative weekly spray of BT and although there are still some budworms it’s not nearly as bad as it usually is!

I'm glad you went over what a budworm is. I thought they were Japanese Beetles. So much to look out for. It can be discouraging at times but it's part of the process. Your garden continues to looks great nonetheless -- love the colors.

@@ChicagoGardener I just noticed them on my petunias over the last few days. I have used the Capt Jack's Deadbug brew successfully in the past. The active ingredient is Spinosad. Then spray weekly to keep them away. I find I didn't have the patience to hunt for the caterpillars. In the past, I've never seen any budworm damage before late July. Things are happening early this year.

If you apply a bloom boosting fertilizer, more blooms should start appearing in a few days! I just had to do that with my petunias bc I wasn’t checking for worms as often as I should have been and the plants are back to full of flowers.

Apparently they're really common on petunias, but I've been growing petunias for the last few years and this is the first time I've had any issues!
