The farmers market sales this year have been low, but maybe what they needed all along was lisianthus! Because this is the week for it! With over 3000 lisianthus planted on the farm, we have an abundance, and this week is peak lisianthus. Every single colour is blooming, and we bought every colour! Blues to pinks, whites to browns, orange, apricot - we have them all! But will it be enough to finally have a successful farmers market where we break the $1000 mark? You have to watch to find out!

As a wedding an event florist in the US I would prefer locally grown lisianthus that looks like that over ordering in bunches that can become damaged and moldy in transport especially during the hot summer with long stems. I don't necessarily understand the obsession with stem length amongst smaller growers that I hear over and over, it's an outdated and arbitrary quality that was set by the big floral farms and florists who sold "long stem roses" for more money to consumers as a status symbol. The average consumer I don't think cares about stem length anymore. Most of what I have sold in the past decade or more is low and lush arrangements, and bouquet work (which is some of the most important for weddings) and those don't require long stems. I would contact your florists next time.
You should still let florists know what you can provide. Most table arrangements they make up do not require the longest stems. What can stunt them the most is letting them get rootbound as plugs. They need to go out small then they can develope large root systems in the cool soil.
I am going to follow your tips if I manage to grow Lizzies next year. Thanks! 😊
I second this. There are loads of things florists need for various types of arrangements. Wedding table arrangements can range from ridiculously huge to very small. Would not hurt to email florists some pictures.
Great advice!
@@thepurplebead You took the words right out of my mouth.🙂👍
Absolutely true! As a florist I can attest that we end up cutting stems down shorter for various styles of designs. I think sending a weekly email blast to your local florists with photos and stem lengths would be a great way to sell your inventory!
Love serena's use of "decadent!" She slips it in in almost every episode. Great word.
Slips it in....4 times so far and it's not over yet 😂
Boutinaires and corsages also don'r require long stems. You have nothing to lose by contacting area florists by email with pictures of your wares.
Well, florists do not actually need long stems if they do arrangements for events. Especially if they are for tables.
Contact the florists. They can be used for arrangements and bouquets
Flowers, flowers, flowers! I love looking at the beautiful flowers. In the field, in the high tunnels, in the buckets, in the bouquets, in the stand, at the market! Makes me feel good to see them, and to see you guys doing well. And the cats. Oh yes, the cat footage - Thanks Ian! 🤗💖🐈🐈⬛ 🐈🐈⬛ 🌻🌼🌺🌷🌸🌹💐💐💐
Well, there are those, like Jennifer, who would enthusiastically yell, "No! There could never be enough Lisianthus!" 🤣😂 🤗 👍
they have posted recently on Facebook shorts that the roadside stand is closed due to fire activity but THEY ARE CURRENTLY SAFE
Wow, the colors of the lisianthus! Can't decide which is my favorite, the apricot or the orange or the orchid--they're gorgeous!
I hope you're all well and safe from these crazy Kelowna/Okanagan fires. It's sad to see what's happening to your beautiful region. Please know that we're keeping you in our thoughts and prayers🙏🏽
Reaching out to florists about the short lisianthus would be good not just to recover costs, but might be a good opportunity to start establishing relationships with florists. Those take time to mature and finding partners that work with your particular business model is worthy of the exercise. Bouquets are looking beautiful, btw!
Very true!
Those flowers are gorgeous! You would be an awesome wedding bouquet designer, Serena.
Oh thank you!
Lisianthus are my love language!!!
The vase arrangements are gorgeous!
I used to make small table arrangements for a country club to use on the dinner tables and would transport them in a restaurant glass rack you could run through a huge dishwasher. Worked great! Canning jars would work too in the roadside stand. You could allow people to take them for a little extra…and bring them back for credit. Giving them a reason to come back. Thrift stores have so many different types of vases.
Have you considered offering a flower service to upscale restaurants/hotels/country clubs. You could build relationships with all the florists…Start an email group with them.
It would be better to sell those Lisianthus and at least get some thing for them, than to just watch them die in the field. ❤🌹
Great idea!!!
As of 9:00 PM Saturday, Ian and Serina are under emergency alert, fires along Okanagan Lake are nearby.
I looked at several sources to find the maps of where the fires are.
Hope they are doing well, staying safe. Unfortunately the amount of smoke will likely affect the flowers.😣
BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS SO YUMMY ❣️❣️❣️
I love how much you educate your viewers about flowers! I made my own small bouquet yesterday using flowers from my garden 💐 ☺️
You could do something smaller in jelly jars? 🌺💚🙃
Try selling those vase at the market maybe start with two? I think a ready vase arrangement would sell quicker.
be sure to pick a vase that will fit in the drink holder in the car - less mess and less damage to the flowers on the way home - it would be a great selling point, simple and easy. one pint mason jars work great.
I hope you guys are staying safe with the fire there!!
Glad the stand is doing better! You two work so hard. I wish you both the best.
I’m so happy your farm is at a point that you guys can take the time to enjoy those beautiful children. You’re absolutely right, they’ll never be this young and impressionable again. You’re making your mark. Family matters. ☺️ Flowers are incredible btw. As always. 🙂🙂
Thank you so much!
I was able to buy one of those bouquets at your roadside stand!!!! I was in the OK this weekend visiting family and drove through Kelowna and stopped in at the stand and got the last lisianthus bouquet! Thanks.
awesome :)
😂Sarina the flowers look beautiful and the bouquet look so beautiful I like watching you all the best guys and take care of yourself.
That shot is Serena picking under the moonlight, WOW!!!!
Thanks
Those vase arrangements are beautiful!
Wow, the 1st vase bouquet you made is exactly my style! Soft and romantic.
Hope you and your family are safe. Thinking of you and everyone affected by these horrendous wildfires.
I'll bet if you emailed a photo of that crop of lisianthus to some local florist shops, they would be very interested. When I used to be a florist, the lead florist would source special flowers like that locally and go pick them up herself. The local growers wouldn't even have to deliver them. It would only cost you the time of sending a few emails to find out if there is interest.
The lisianthus are so gorgeous!
"No horse play! Cat play only!" I about snorted my coffee... 😅
And I'm right there with you, Serena, lime zinnias are a favorite of mine too, I have visions of gardens full of them around my yard.
These flowers are gorgeous!!! So gorgeous. And these videos are perfection. You guys do such an amazing job! ❤
Gyönyörű különleges sokszínű viragok sok munka megtérés gyonyorkodhetunk bennük lenyugozo gratulálok tisztelettel köszönöm ❤❤❤❤😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
I really love the mini vase! Wish I lived near you guys. I would get fresh flowers weekly! ❤🌾🌺🌼
Thanks!
A perfect storm
Approach your florists, let them know the average stem length. I’m pretty sure they will buy. They can use them in wedding work and shop sales. Let them know you will have a supply next year. If you give them a target time window for next year, you will make them very happy.
And make sure you take a bucket or two of all your colours, those will tempt them!
Beautiful!
The first jar is sooo pretty
Tha ks
Didn't the location of your booth within the Market change? Perhaps that is playing a role in the decreased sales?
Love the lizzies! Stunning blushy beige with that dark grass and taupe-y zenia. Stunning. ❤❤❤❤
They are gorgeous!!!!
The colors are stunning! Great job!
thank you! 💐
i love the colors!! stay safe with all the wildfires.
I live in a very similar climate, though a different growing zone. It would be great to see a video of your forever flowers and fillers and their varieties.
The Vases are gorgeous. And they’re actually not mini. Love them ❤
Beautiful flowers as always 🎉🎉
Lisianthus are one of my favorite flowers but we can´t grow them here in Sweden. They are so slow growing sadly but so freaking beautiful in all the colors.
Your beautiful flowers make me smile I Live to far away to visit
The great part about online is being to share the flowers with people who aren't local with the videos
Those flowers looks so beautiful 😍💜
You made a very nice arrangement!
Love the variety. The Rainbow week is my favorite so far
I love the grasses in the arrangements.
You would be SO good at wedding bouquets!❤
They intimidate me, but I think Ian is going to pressure me into them soon, lol
The first thing I do when I buy a bouquet is chop off anywhere between 6-12”. Typically they are way too tall for my liking. I like an arrangement on the kitchen island or the table but I hate having to look around it or through it. By the time I’m done chopping the overall height is not exceeding 12” and often even shorter than that. Each to own 💐.
We do sell some shorter bouquets, but if they get too short, then they don't display as well, and then get missed at the market. The lissies are mostly tall enough now for our market bouquet though. They just aren't grade A florist quality, like I wanted
I love the bright colors
I LOVE that bright colored one!
Your flowers are gorgeous! Everything looks so clean and perfect!
So beautiful!You have green fingers
I love the romantic themed vase. It’s always my vote. ❤
The brights always sell so good for our customers though, lol
I LOVE the BRIGHT colored vase! Perfect. Love bold colored flowers.
Beautiful job you guys do so much work and it shows in your flowers always so beautiful
I hope your family is healthy and away from most of the smoke. It harrowing to just watch nature change so much, but it's also going to benefit people if they understand why the forests are so important, far beyond logging, lumber. Forests are our natural lungs.
Good wishes for your family, pets, extended family members. We all need rain, but the Okanagan needs it now.
Hands down ,absolutely my favorite flower to plant. I wintered over 4 plants last year, and am enjoying a long blooming time right now.
Those are gorgeous ❤ . I have not seen those at my farmers market in Northern California
I hope you guys are safe!!! Thinking of you!! Praying also
Just following the news on the wildfires. Hope you and your family are safe.
Wow great video, I’ve never grow lisianthus but I think I’ll give them a go in my home garden next year, those bouquets are beautiful, I especially liked the non pastels arrangement in the vase
Here for Ian cause his edits are great. 😉😁 (just watched this week’s live)
Love the Lisianthus flowers. Short stem or long stem.
I LOVE Lisianthus! So gorgeous! Hope you all are staying safe.
We are safe
Video idea?😊 I would be interested in watching an in-depth explanation of why you pick certain flowers at night and others dont matter, then seeing what it looks like when they dont hydrate/the normal wastage after. Maybe an experiment on flowers you have multitudes of - one bunch from the night harvest, one from the day? Might be a good opportunity to add education about how to trim stems for longest vase life on bouquets (or is that just a myth?)
That would be a good video. Florets "a year in flowers" has great info on this.
Guys you should be so proud of yourselfs and efforts see how many land you attend, jus two pair of hands, is amazing!!
You are Amazing hard workers . Veggies and flowers is a good combinaison Red roof lively people giving joy daily 🙏💓⭐
One of my all time favorite flowers. The intense never ending miserable heat in Austin has killed my entire beautiful garden including my huge amount of Lisianthus makes me want to cry. Still no relief in site, not one drop of rain in 3 months heat index 115-120 everyday your lisianthus are stunning just stunning.
Hope you guys stay safe in that crazy fire; thinking of you in the UK.
Praying for your safety from the wild fires.
They might be a bit short but so pretty!
Which of the $35 dollar arrangements sold first, the tall or stout vase? Both were stunning and would sell for at least double at a floral shop. 💐💐💐
The colourful one sold first but they both sold
Wow,I have got to add these, peonies a/me a few other beautiful flowers that you grow. I live in North Carolina, zone 8A so they might be perennial I hope. Maybe some dahlias and gladiolus, too.
I LOVE LISIANTHUS ❤
Me too
Why have you turned off comments? It’s a shame. love you guys Wishing you the best. U both work so hard. Take care of yourselves & u r family. Sending positive thoughts ❤️❤️❤️🦅
I’m praying and hoping you, your family, friends and community are safe and healthy. I hope your farm was spared!
We and the farm is safe
Gorgeous darling ❤
Love the arrangements. Could you maybe pot a few of the shorter flowers and instead of cutting them, sell them as a plant?
New camera!?? So much beauty!!!
Remember to thank God for these precious gifts
Wow! The bases are beautiful. If I was in Canada I would buy them.
Right?! Lol
I hope your family is safe from the fires
1 of My favorite flowers!! What kind of cat and his coloring is that beauty?
Your family and everyone in the fire zone are in my thoughts :(
Hi guys, hope you’re doing OK with the crazy fires. 🙏 ❤
We are safe
Ian yes we appreciate your hard work enjoying all the videos. You attended farm school. When do we see your improve skills and watch you make bouquet. This is year 5
Your flowers are gorgeous through out each season !!!!!! Listening about shortcomings and Money, money, money gets old after awhile. Tell me how your plan IS WORKING PLEASE! Speak life into your business!!!! Stop cursing yourself with negativity!
Hope you guys are ok in Kelowna xx
Please let us know if you are safe from the fire 😢
So happy about the other comments, saying that you should contact your local florist despite stem length. I hope these comments reach you on time and you will actually build bridges instead of burning them! Crossing all fingers
Worth trying
Your Lisianthus are stunning. I can see why you have all the colors, so hard to decide. I would love to try them here in NC. Why did you decide to plant them in a high tunnel?
your cat is too cute. Is he/she plantsave?
I must be the only person in the world who doesn't care for lisianthus? LOL! I've grown them before, and they're pretty and rose-like, but the antique colors always looked to me like they were on their way to becoming dried flowers. To me, there are many other flowers that are more decadent, like huge dahlias, elegant snapdragons, snowball marigolds, lush double daisies. That said, your bouquets are beautiful. My favorites are always the brightly colored ones.
Nope! You’re not alone. I’m with you on the Lisianthus.
