Tangential trivia re “these are meant for tent poles, not for holding antennas”: Marconi in his early experiments erected a tent to protect his equipment and he attached the radio device to the central tent pole, which was called an “antenna”, an Italian word taken from the Latin meaning a mast, or sailyard, or also applied to insect feeler appendages. So radio “antennas” are called by that name because the original commercial antenna was a tent pole, and was referred to as such by the Italian word antenna. Initially, as in the 1902 Encyclopedia Britannica, people even distinguished antenna from vertical wires, or aerials, or other apparatus to form radio waves, from antennas, though within a few more years “antenna” became the generic term for all such devices, at least in English.
Indeed! A good observation. Not an absolute rule, but antennae fir the insect appendages came the English several centuries earlier from the Latin versions of Aristotle. In an age enamored with the Classics, Latin forms prevailed. But radio antenna were introduced in a modern era where technocrats and business were on the rise, and the classicists on the wane. I do see crossover for both uses occasionally
I have several of the skyhooks that I purchased at a Hamfest here. Really works well. BTW, you could have demo'd the Poseidon suspended at the top ;) Really loving that antenna. Thanks TO.

That's pretty slick. Going to pick one of those up. FYI, if one is looking for those poles, they're from the Camo netting set. (not tent, they won't hold the weight) The newer ones are fiberglass, the older ones are aluminum.. can sometimes find them at surplus stores.

Hello Janice! When I saw this, I had to share it with you! Those military masts are good, but they need guying and these plates will help! - the won't bend at the top like the fishing poles will, but they will have an overall bend if you go too high or don't guy. They are really good for the price!
@@temporarilyoffline Thanks TO, I think I will wait till I get to my first ham fest to buy the military post. They are a little expensive on ebay. Thank You
Those masts are meant to hold up camo netting. The fit on the poles is always...lose. As long as you always have tension on the sections they stay together. The moment you lose tension they kinda fall apart. Those guy holes are key for this kit. That spreader is nice as hell though.

Thanks for the info! I didn't know that!
The difference being in the plural. The plural of a radio antenna is 'antennas'. The plural of an insect antenna is 'antennae'.

In the USMC, we used those poles for putting up camo nets over our vehicle. In case people are looking for surplus.
Yeah, we all call them antenna masts, but they are really tent poles.

Thanks! They come up on ebay all the time. I have a bag of the fiberglass poles. I'd hope the aluminum are less bending.
I did get 20 of those aluminum poles for $10 at a swap meet. They do yeoman service.
Sweet!

The single rope thing has a single point of failure though, so it works when you have strong soil and no trippers.
To keep interested and sharp, I don't use the same antenna twice in a row in my stable of at least a dozen.
I am always playing with antennas and seeing what gets where and what does better. I like building them too!
