Been using this for years on the road for vhf/uhf and 11 meter and worked well. Lately been using it for stationary hf qrp with two radials and also works well. Thanks
Radio Shack used to sell these back in the 1990's! I bought one to used on my car with the Yaesu FT50 I had. I also had the hand mic and 12v battery charger/adapter.
I've used the Nagoya version for a few years, especially with business trips. Usually good reports for an HT. The quick install/removal is especially nice when you're parking in unfamiliar areas or driving a rental.
When I was first licensed, I drove a 5-speed Porsche in downtown Atlanta traffic. I used this very mount with a Yaesu vx8r (?) HT. The stainless steel mesh ragtop was a terrific ground plane. Thanks for the remembrance, TO. I’m awaiting delivery of a 2024 RAV4 suv. I use both an FT5DR and Anytone 878uviii+ with BT. This might be the ticket with BT.
I used to have one of those over window antenna mounts... That was like 24 by years ago for my handheld CB. I really need another one now I think. It would be super handy.
You know, I didn't even think about this with aluminum trucks, but its a sure-fire winner in that department. The 3rd brake light option is stupid expensive for a piece of machine cut metal...
I don’t see a problem with mounting a mag mount antenna on a car as long as there is not a bare magnet in it. Most mag mounts have a thin plastic covering on the magnet to protect paint.
What fittings would I need for a UV-5R? The MFJ website pictures the detail of the ends, But I am almost sure that taking the stock antenna from the radio and trying to install it on the window mount clip will not go. Take a look at the pictures, I believe MFJ has the same picture for both.
They don't make a model that connects to the UV-5R directly, you'd need an SMA adapter - which would depend on which model of MFJ-310 you get. If you were going to be taking the HT out of the car and putting the antenna back on, I'd get the BNC model of MFJ-310 and a BNC baofeng adapter like this one: amzn.to/3wKwd7r That would make the swap easier/faster - and SMA connectors have a limited life span of screw on/offs anyway, the adapters would make that last longer.
i am looking for a good solution for that also.. but i am afraid how the cable is holding up after some usage.. windows can have some force that smash the cable.
I agree. If it helps, the way the cable is routed it has already most of its bending and squeezing handled. I also would put it on the least used window, for me that's the driver's side rear.
I bought one of these antenna mounts. How does it do at legal highway speeds? I suppose I’m asking about the signal stick + mount combo which is how I plan use mine too.
I used my signal stick on this mount on two trips - one from Orlando, FL to Trinity, TX and again from Rosenberg, TX to Trinity, TX - If you've haven't been to TX, side roads with no shoulders are 70MPH rated... so you can imagine interstate and open road speeds. AKA - worked great.
I don't have any cars with gutters anymore - do you think the magnetic coupling would be better than capacitive coupling? I guess there isn't much conductivity between the magnet and paint.
How deep does it go? I’m having trouble finding dimensions for it. I have one of those wind deflector/visors on the door, and wanted to see if it would clear that. Thanks in advance for anyone who could help! 73!
@temporarilyoffline can I safely use an antenna that is about one and a half foot in length for this setup? I worried I might damage or crack my window.
I used the super elastic signal stick that is about one and half foot in length and it was fine. There are some comments on here from users with experience with metal whips, take a look at those. I would suggest that you test/build confidence instead of hit 88mph with a heavy whip on the first go-round. At over 1000mi, I'm happy with this mount and the signal stick.
Only problem is for those of us with whip antennas, it will fold backwards with the wind. And they don't say what the weight or height maximum is if you want to use a longer antenna.
Yep, gotta use some judgement on that front for sure. My signalstick worked great and now I gotta get a signal stalk to test. Height is vehicle dependent, on my parents sports car it would be completely different than on my dually tow beast. Even just getting the rubber duck out of the cage is going to be an improvement.
I know I put 50w through it on the 900mi back from hamcation via APRS beaconing. I don't think the coax is the problem here, but the antenna. It's RG-58(esque) coax, so should be good for more power that you want.
It goes over the window and into the weather stripping, which depending on your car is probably well below the rain guard. I don't have one to test, I sold my rain guarded car last spring.
I wouldn't have a problem running 100w through the cable. Anything more than that and I'd start testing/checking. Thile antenna couples capacitively to metal nearby (the car) for a ground plane effect - everything effects everything.
The website says it is mini rg58. I was not able to find mini rg58 when checking the googles. Am I misunderstanding something? I'm just curious what cable is able to allow the window to close.
0:55 Let's be honest. The "ground plane" here is sketchy, at best. The mount may or may not actually be electrically bonded to that seemingly very-small part of the mount that may or may not be touching the body of the car when you roll up the window. The real benefit is that the mount gets the antenna out of the Faraday cage, right? No reason to go overboard.
It was hiding amongst the THOUSANDS of products at the MFJ booth. It took me 3 years to see it! I'm not surprised that you missed it... because I did too.

Pretty slick - what antennas are you using for QRP and 11m?
So someone put a house door on a big green bus. 😂
Yeah, they are very interesting people. Lots of neat Schoolies here.
I love that idea of the antenna on the window. Gotta get one for sure . Thanks for sharing.
Good to see you!

I made my own version of this with an s-hook belt clip and a piece of really thin coax. It's really nice to use.

I've used this model quite a few years when helping comms at a marathon, and also on the highway traveling. Full copies both ways.

I have both, this one packs up smaller, gotta do a weight test.
Thank you. I'll look at picking a couple of these up.
Great idea!
I’d love to see how much of your 5 watts makes it to the other end of that tiny coax. Neat gadget. I want one. But the coax loss has me worried.
Nice review TO.
Thanks Steve! I think you were standing there with me at MFJ at Hamcation when I picked it up!
@temporarilyoffline Yes I was.
I have an FT-65 so I would need the 310SF but the pic shows both SMA connectors are female
I saw that one and scratched my head a bit. I'd need to sit down and think about it.
Looks quite good, thank you for sharing Steve!

I don’t see a problem with mounting a mag mount antenna on a car as long as there is not a bare magnet in it. Most mag mounts have a thin plastic covering on the magnet to protect paint.
This was my mother-in-law's car... nowhatimean?

No NMO mount option, sorry. Worked great with my signal stick

Huh, nice little temporary mobile antenna mount. Thanks for sharing.
You got it! I think it's a perfect solution, better than magmounts, esp with the new aluminum trucks
I've been looking for a way to get an antenna outside the truck for meshtastic. I think I'll experiment with this.
The SMA version would be great for that!
Slick! Bet Jeem wished he would had one like this instead of glued to the window :)
Or that $500 metal but for the brake light for sure.
Yes.
(Mine is from Radio Shack)
💯
I bought one for my FT-5. Works great. Use it for APRS and frees up the FTM-300 for other important communication tasks. 73's KG7COA

Would it be possible to get to Link for the adapter on your HT to go to BNC?

Groundplane? What's grounded to the car? Attached to glass into a waterproof rubber door seal. You will put out a better signal with a mag mount.
Mag mount doesn't make anymore of a direct electrical connection than this thing does. Its all about Capacitive Coupling.
Does it work on cars with rain guards?
It goes over the window and into the weather stripping, which depending on your car is probably well below the rain guard. I don't have one to test, I sold my rain guarded car last spring.
Is there a power limit on the cable?
Also is the ground plane just from the antenna being close enough to the cars chassis?
