If you do choose to wear a helmet, there are a lot of options out there. The most important factor is comfort - you will be wearing this thing hopefully every time you ride your bike, so making sure it fits is paramount. After that, try and work out what suits you in terms of price point, the amount of ventilation it offers, even weight and aerodynamics - this becomes more of a consideration on higher end helmets.
An important point to mention is that all reputably sold helmets will have passed safety checks, so a more expensive helmet won't mean greater safety.

Living someplace warm, I always check on how the sweat is channeled on the brow. I had one helmet that had pads that converged in the middle of the brow channeling all the sweat down between my eyes. That helmet didn't last long. The one I have now has a suspension mechanism that channels it to either side of my face and makes it much more enjoyable.

What are your feelings on MIPS helmets?
You are so right about trying on helmets in the shop rather than ordering online. I have learned that a universal sized helmet isn't unless you have a universal sized head. I have a large head so I need to have one that is either large or extra-large. I wear a hat size of 7⅝ to 7⅞ (US hat size).
I like having a helmet with a visor. I find that It helps with avoiding sun in my eyes. I also attach rear-view mirrors to my visor. I use the ones that are made to attach to glasses bows. I use duct-tape to keep them from falling off.

Those height adjustable retention systems are the best for us guys with large protrusions. The Louis Garneau Course helmet has the most reach of any I tried, love how it fits. There's also a lot of variation on the straps, some fitting certain head types better than others. It takes a long time to find that special one.

Another fitment test: make sure the helmet doesn't "spin" on your head after it is adjusted for comfort? I've found the manufacturers vary quite a bit when it comes to roundness e.g. Giro and Uvex seem to fit a wider/rounder head where Kask and Scott are narrower.

Unfortunately i made the mistake of buying a helmet that's a little bit big for my head. it doesn't come off and is properly secured and all that but if i move my head fast from side to side, the helmet shakes a bit. Bah :(

You want a helmet that will stay in place as you ride and especially during a fall so paying more for a top of the line 3D retention system e.g. Catlike/LAS does improve safety. You may be able to find a less expensive helmet with an ideal fit but you are better off with something that can adjust to your head like your Kask did (which wasn't a cheap helmet).

I now know two people who riding road bikes had accidents and fell face first, hitting their face where the helmet does not cover. Both had severe injuries and one even a titanium place put in place via surgery.
What would you say about getting a downhill helmet for road cycling?
I mostly ride in the city, about 15km a day (cars, potholes, stupid drivers: high risk of accident).
I'm talking about something like the MET Parachute, full face coverage downhill helmet weighing only about 700 grams.

Great video many thanks. Although it didn't answer my specific question it does give me some ideas how to proceed. My basic dilemma is I have an adopted daughter from the Congo. Like me she loves to ride bikes, unlike me she has a lot of hair, and unfortunatley does not like to wear a helmet (but she does) primarily because of her hair. Don't see many black cyclist and see even less black female cyclist. How do they find a helmet that is adjustable enough to cope with the hair and still easy to get on, get off, and is comfortable. Would like to hear anyone's suggestions. Thanks!

Are there helmets measured by two dimensions: width and length? I was at a bike shop and couldn't find a helmet, which really fits. Either it's too narrow, or too long... or it does not fit with my glasses on. Do helmet proportions differ depending on country they are sold in?

The adjustments at the back should adjust enough to fit for the length of your head.

I once got spun by a car that suddenly turned left and the helmet hit the ground - what hurt my head was the polystyrene cracking inside and poking into my skull - quite irritating tho the helmet was a few yrs old - so replace them as repeated sweatings weaken the black stuff...

Hi! I wanted to ask if anyone knows about using a child's helmet. So, today I went to a local bike shop(not in the UK ATM) to buy a helmet. They measured my head and considering my size(52cm) they gave me a bell helmet, which fitted kinda ok on my head. I bought it, then realised it was a kid's helmet. Do you think I shall return it? Cause I did a bit research online and some ppl say that even if it fits well on an adult's head, it still isn't safe. Could someone advise, please? Thanks in advance!

I've got two things to ask about:
    1. What's with those road helmets with circular vents like Dan used to use in the cervelo test team? Is it just another design because it looks less aero than a normal helmet with straight vents.
    2. If less vents mean aero, correct me if I'm wrong but should skate helmets and those big old school road helmets with two or three vents be technically aero too? Thanks :)

+Ramir Angeles aerodynamics are about refinement. Because skate helmets and old road helmets had very little if any thought put towards aerodynamics they aren't likely to be very aerodynamic. They would be even less aerodynamic if you drilled more holes in them but I suspect that basically any modern road helmet is better than either.

I need the most compact helmet possible. I already have a big head so an exaggerative helmet just adds insult to injury lol 😂😂

Did you know that in America, the same $600 helmet from the local bike boutique has to meet the same standards as the $19.99 department store version?

How do you choose if you are in between size, for example you have a 58 cm size. Most of the brands are from 54 to 58cm and 58 cm to 62cm.

Your best bet is to try both sizes on in person

GCN, somehow you forgot to include the #1 consideration in this video: safety. As user mattelliottmusic points out, wearing a helmet may not be safer than not wearing one. Also, it's not like every skull injury is life threatening. Yes, injuries to the head *can be* fatal, but I have not seen relevant cyclist studies which state a certain percentage of them are. Only super generalised info.
Also, some scientific studies suggest that a sudden rotation in the neck can make the rest of one's life a lot more miserable. Maybe that should be taken into account as well when choosing a helmet? I would certainly suggest it in a video. So MIPS would certainly be something I would like to be included in my choice of helmet.
Finally, what about multi-sports? Those who like to cycle, climb (mountaineering, rock) and/or kayak might get away with just the Kong Scarab. (Yes, there aren't any other helmets I'm aware of with this combination). For those who prefer skiing instead of kayaking, the Cebe Trilogy offers protection for cycling, skiing and climbing (mountaineering, rock).
So there you have some more characteristics to choose from: safety and usefulness.
