A great compilation. But what is most impressive is your ability to cover these so perfectly. You are an incredible player (and teacher). Thanks for doing this!
Deacon Blues by Steely Dan is my favorite tune of all time! I started to listen to Steely Dan as a freshman at UNC Chapel Hill in 1973. The Fender Rhodes sound is my favorite of all musical instruments....you truly make your Rhodes sing!
Things that stuck out: 1. Steely Dan/Donald Fagen is prominent. 2. How the Rhodes lends itself to jazz chords and voicings. 3. The Ambrosia intro connected with me emotionally, stronger than the others. Great list...great playing.
What an iconic instrument. We could easily come up with 20 more universally recognized intros and you could brilliantly reproduce them on that beautiful sounding Rhodes. Well done, as always.
As a keyboardist of over 35 years who’s first purchase (at age 16 with my own money) was a Fender Rhodes Seventy-Three Suitcase, it’s hard to choose as both lists you compiled are awesome! Thank you for playing ALL of those Rhodes intros beautifully! Brought back some great times for me in my younger years as a musician playing gigs with a band. I sure do miss my Rhodes 73 Suitcase. ❤👏🏾👏🏾🎹🎶
Both compilations are superb - and your renditions are all very beautifully done. I agree with your personal top ten choices. But I was sad you left one out. Fortunately, it's the number one pick here, Billy Joel's "James." Bravo. Thank you for even considering a second round! I plan on watching more of your videos.
I'm sure most know this but just wanted to comment that part of Chick Corea's Spain you played is basically the adagio from Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez.
I really think they're both excellent lists. I kept waiting to see where my personal favorite would end up (One hundred ways), and when it was there at #6, it made me excited to see what would end up in the top 5... I had actually forgotten that Chick Corea's originally recording of the intro was on a Rhodes.. I hear it played live on trumpet often.. but yes, hard to beat that melody. Also, I love that Riders on the Storm was most requested... it's a very ubiquitous rhodes intro.. it reminds me of my days as a lounge pianist, where people would request "The Rose" constantly... even though it definitely isn't the best. haha. Love when you do list-vids like this man, thanks for putting this together.
So thrilled to see Spain on this list! That was one of my suggestions! All of these songs are worthy of top spots on any list, and the playing is fantastic. Wonderful job, love this.
I was sooo happy to see you play some of Billy’s most underrated songs!!!! Rosalinda’s Eyes and James are such great songs! And the Rhodes intros are some of the best! So glad to see James as #1!
Another great selection and I'm sure there are many songs you could say this about, but surprised there is no "Angela" Bob James, or "No Quarter" by Led Zeppelin!
Another amazing video. Thank you so much. Both lists are so great. Now, please break them all down and teach us!! Or I am happy to sign up for private / remote lessons.
Amazing! Thanks for sharing and happy to see my suggestion included. So many gems here. I think you will need to expand this to a top 100 list. THANKS!
Some mentioned the theme from Taxi. That is a classic Rhodes song. I've never played Michael McDonald/Steely Dan so I'm not familiar with his chord use/progression. But whatever he used, you can randomly play those chords and know it's him. Such a distinctive mood.
First, the good news then the bad news. The good news you played your top 20 exceptionally well. And now for the bad news - Donald Fagen should be #1 on your list - uptown baby, uptown! 😎
Yeah, you killed it, period. This list is quite amazing because it covers a broad range of music but kinda in a similar block of time. I’m impressed. Great work. Love your skills.
I think that the intro of Deniece William’s Cause You Love Me Baby was played on a Rhodes piano. A lot of Niecy’s fans here will be delighted if you can make a short cover. 😊 I love your compilations! Thank you very much!
Oh hell yes! Hoping there's some lessons on some of these coming!!!!! HDPiano has some great ones but I seem to pick it up MUCH faster from your teaching method of building off the previous bars each time
First off, I am in awe of your playing. It really sounds perfect and you captured every one of the songs original sounds. Second, I would love to know how you get such perfect tone out of your Rhodes. Mine sounds good, but yours is even better. Many of the songs in this list would be ones that I would dearly love to learn, particularly James (Billy Joel), Too High (Stevie Wonder) and all the Steely Dan / Donald Fagen songs. I would be on tutorials of those songs like white on rice. Thank you for the best 8:13 of my day today.
A great list, and EXCEPTIONAL playing, on your part! I think the ranking order is somewhat irrelevant, since they are ALL great intros. Now...how about the Top 20 WURLITZER intros?? I can't WAIT, to hear you play "Bloody Well Right" at #1... 😁
Great choices. I'm shopping for a Leslie for my 1973 Fender-Rhodes 88 Stage I got for Christmas when I was in high school. My sister has my Hammond and it's Leslie.
Good, you corrected the absolute crime of not including Deacon Blues in the first video. I wasn’t expecting this to be on here, but my favorite Rhodes song is “Katamari on the Rhodes.” I’m sure lots of people are familiar with the legendary soundtrack of Katamari Damacy, but this song is actually from the PSP spinoff: Me & My Katamari. The game itself isn’t as good as the first two PS2 games, but it has one of the best soundtracks imo. Check it out if you haven’t already!
both are great; your audience (and you) have excellent taste, these lists have reminded us of where the great songs and music of the last forty years is located :)
There were SO many in the 1980s , because it was such a prolific and much used keyboard in that decade. Most of my fave intros on Rhodes are from that era. One of my fave Rhodes intros from that time is “what about me?” By Kenny Rogers.
Bravo, got the effects almost perfect on most them also. Great playing. Thought Styx - Babe might make this list. Maybe it was on your top 10, don't remember
Very nice list. I kept listening for Riders on the Storm, thinking how could this not have made the list. I was surprised at all the Steely Dan/Donald Fagen songs, but I shouldn't have been--he's a great writer.
Thanks for including Save Me from Al Jarreau. David Foster is such a great pianist. Check out Lovin' and Losin' You by Dwayne Ford. I like Tom Cannings playing too
Great list. But I don't know if you could also show a Wurlitzet list. Mixing up... Bloody Well Right, by Supertramp. Bell Tree by America. Kodachrome, by Paul Simon. Pretzel Logic and The Royal Scam, by Steely Dan.
both lists are awesome! that was fun watching and listening to it! but of course there's room for even more compilations ... here is my suggestion (hope i didn't miss it in the first one..): shake a tail feather - by the blues brothers / ray charles. :)
So were they in Random order? Loved Riders, you should do a whole video on Ray Manzarek. Do you have the Bass keyboard he had? He did bass in concert with his left hand and all the keys with his right, every song. He was a good friend. I worked for him a few shows and helped him clean and set up a bunch things in his studio. Riders 1, Eagles 2
Both lists are great. It is funny that most of the songs are from many years ago. One of my favorite electric piano intros is One on One by Hall & Oates and London Town by Wings…not sure if they used a Rhodes.
I was surprised to realize how many of these are great songs but personally I don't think the intro stands out on its own that much. There are some bangers in here alright (I'd say Spain being #1 for me) but I think I prefer your original list overall. Be as it may, super cool to see you perform all of them!
Man you're a keyboard monster! impeccable playing and such a fine selection of Golden era music busines wich was the 60's thru 90's and with de invention of Rhodes piano the thing became sweeter. I enjoyed all the 30 intros!!! Do you know the tune called "Take me to the Mardi Gras", (Rhodes played with a whah whah pedal), from Bob James and all that 70 era of his compositions and recordings? I'm happy to find your channel here! Best regards from São Paulo Brazil!
I mean, no need for competition. Between your list and ours, that might be the comprehensive top 30 Rhodes songs of the last 50 years plus or minus some Herbie Hancock/Headhunters work.
Thanks! Incredibly simple. It's going into a cheap SSL interface into Logic. Tiny bit of stereo reverb, stereo chorus, phaser, tremolo whenever those are needed. Mostly Logic default plugins!
@@pierrejpiscitelli Thanks, so it must be the player, too 😅! SSL 2 has 1 MΩ instrument input impedance - you go there directly from the harp, or via the passive tone / volume stack in your Rhodes?
A great compilation. But what is most impressive is your ability to cover these so perfectly. You are an incredible player (and teacher). Thanks for doing this!
That's very kind, thanks for watching!
@@pierrejpiscitelli great set both 10 and 20 I’m a big fan of the Dan anyway love the rest too
"Angela" - theme from Taxi.
Or any Bob James!
Deacon Blues by Steely Dan is my favorite tune of all time! I started to listen to Steely Dan as a freshman at UNC Chapel Hill in 1973. The Fender Rhodes sound is my favorite of all musical instruments....you truly make your Rhodes sing!
Such great chords

Great list...great playing.
Man, you made me cry...long time I didn't hear such a good Rhodes player full of taste and soul
Thanks! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Donald Fagen is absolutely the master of the Rhodes wow. Stevie too! That Ambrosia tune is also gorgeous.
What a fun watch. Not only was it pleasing to hear all those great intros, but your ability to execute them so masterfully was quite impressive. 👍
Honestly, I think some combination of your original list plus this list is perfect
What an iconic instrument. We could easily come up with 20 more universally recognized intros and you could brilliantly reproduce them on that beautiful sounding Rhodes. Well done, as always.
I just hope this video doesn't get blocked because of Don Henley. Great list!
Henley's been having a "get off my lawn" moment lately. He needs to take his Xanax and calm down.
haha!
@@jakeperl5857Lately? It's been his brand for decades
@@jakeperl5857he won’t say “get off my lawn” he’ll just mime it!
Great list and well played - but I was so sure you'd find room for 'Sheep' by Pink Floyd.

Your Rhodes sounds and looks gorgeous! Crystal clear!
The intros from the 70-80ies are the best, as was the music.
You have followers with very good taste! And you and your rhodes gives me the chills all the way to Stockholm❤❤❤

The Rhodes is such an amazing instrument. It is a central component of so much great music. One song I would add is No Quarter by Led Zeppelin.
I'm sure most know this but just wanted to comment that part of Chick Corea's Spain you played is basically the adagio from Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez.

not an into but the song that introduced me to that Rhodes sound with i still love to this day. ProbeXPD 1979 Towson State Jazz band.

Bloody Well Right, by Supertramp.
Bell Tree by America.
Kodachrome, by Paul Simon.
Pretzel Logic and The Royal Scam, by Steely Dan.
