Great signing for the Giants and for Verlander. Playing at that stadium with that infield defense behind makes it the best fit for Verlander. Also. 1 year deals are never risky
Verlander had that neck injury in June which probably contributed to his second half decline. Last year his first half 3-2 3.95 ERA, second half 2-4 8.10 ERA. Also home and away splits, home 0-3 7.98 ERA, away 5-3 4.28 ERA. The Daikin punishes pitchers in a way that Oracle does not.
It’s definitely incredible he’s still out there. The modern Nolan Ryan. Definitely quite the split, I didn’t know that. Everybody goes with recency bias but you get the playoffs off and the offseason to get that neck addressed, take your time ramping him up & be happy if you get 4-5 good innings, yeah. We take it.
I think most all of us can agree that the Detroit Tigers signing of Alex Cobb for $15-17M was a bad move. I'd much rather have taken a flyer on Verlander with that contract.
The Diamondbacks’ World Series appearance was off of 84 wins and they didn’t make the playoffs at all last year. But sure, sit there confidently proclaiming the Giants are gonna finish 4th before the season starts. Maybe they will, but only someone who hasn’t watched much baseball at all says such things with such confidence before spring training.
6:44 I was a surprised by the move too but it makes sense for us. Sure he got shelled by Pablo in the ‘12 WS but those were pitchers pitches that a good bad ball hitter crushed. He’s pitched well in SF and wants to pitch in a good pitchers park. Something tells me he really likes Buster and what they’re building. Maybe there was talks of him consulting after the year or something? Buster has talked a lot about bringing back Giants vets to contribute to the growth of the team. Obvi he’s not a SF vet but he’s a surefire HOF. I’d rather have him than Scherzer. Honestly thought they would go after Flaherty as next best after Burnes.
If it was anyone else, then I could see there being problems, but with Justin Verlander, it kinda feels like the older he gets, the better he is. This is the same dude who one year got injured and was thought to be washed, then the next year he wins a Cy Young. I've kinda been wanting JV or Scherzer on the Giants for years that and it does kinda feel like when Giants signed Randy Johnson
The signing definitely reminds me of the Randy Johnson signing. Bobby Evans was part of that deal and may have had some influence on this deal. This type of move gives Verlander a chance to prove himself after one bad season. Yes, he's at the tail end of his career, everyone knows that. What he can offer to all the younger guys in the Giants' rotation is worth every penny of this contract. And I do believe that that is at the core of Posey's reasoning for this deal. Landen Roupp, Hayden Birdsong, Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks, Logan Webb and even Robbie Ray all stand to benefit from having a future Hall of Fame pitcher in the clubhouse, even if he is in his decline years. JV has been the best pitcher in baseball for a long time. And he's won every award a pitcher can win. There's no way he doesn't have a positive influence on the Giants' pitching staff this season. And hey, Will Clark gives this signing a huge thumbs up. I'll listen to his take over any of these guys any frickin' day because he is not only still in the game as part of the Giants' player development staff, he was also hands down a much better player than both AJ and Kratz. Not sure who the other guys are.
Ngl i always got the vibe that Scherzer and Verlander have a rivalry (friendly one). I think they just want to finish above the other in the stats department. They're always passing each other in strikeouts
I'm amazed that this hasn't caught on yet! When Clemens did this in the early 2000's, i thought for sure this was going to become how most older pitchers ended their careers...
If Farhan Zaidi had done this signing, he'd have been ripped for signing an old guy. If signing an old guy was the plan, Max Scherzer should have been the choice(he's younger). Is Buster going for the " veteran leadership" BS?! Let's hope/wish/pray Verlander has some gas left in the tank
@@805fillmore every team in baseball wants Altuve on their team are you kidding me? Career 300 hitter with pop at his size who has more heart then anyone? Multiple champion? First ballot HOFer? No question
Not happy with the signing. We need reliable arms in that rotation. They have Hicks listed as a Starter but I doubt he sticks in the rotation all year and even if he does he only pitches 5 innings each start. Ray is unreliable, Harrison and Birdsong are unproven as well. We need more dependable arms who will consistently pitch 7 innings a game and hopefully throw 130+ innings in a season. At this point I doubt JV can do that and I would've rather had Morton at this point.
Sounds like the words of an incompetent hater. First there is a HUGE gap between the Rockies and us/Dbacks. Secondly, they will be fighting for the #2 spot. We were 1.5GB of the wild card in late august without Lee, Hicks shutting down, and some other injuries. We’ve retooled some and have some great prospects who are coming up this year.

💯
They all missed the most important part of the signing. It includes his wife which is in itself worth the price.

Can't get over the picture of Jamie Moyer talking trash. Love these type of stories ❤
Depending on his performance spring training; I see Melvin giving him the opening day start to Verlander.

Verlander PERIOD 🔥🔥🔥
AJ is never allowed to talk anything Giants related
AJ the type of dude comment "🔥🔥🔥" on Kate's IG photos
A BETTER STRATEGY WITH THE OLDER MEN IS THIS ....JULY AND ON YOU PITCH ...

The kind of anger you see when a guy whiffs against a soft-tosser 😆😆😆
Trash can sales just went up if SF.
Get over it, nobody gives AF anymore.

The giants are in stiff competition for last place. This signing is only of value if he pitches well they trade him in July to a contender.

If he’s healthy, pitching that park, JV will have a 3.50ish ERA (with potential to go lower)
