on the one hand, with the whole "just a tech demo", I understand they want to iron out all the remaining kinks in the individual sections before really adding a whole lot of other features to debug and work on, and releasing it identically to SE 1s release is nostalgic, I'm left feeling like it was too much to be put out this quickly. I'll still wait to watch it though, because I am interested in hopefully many qol changes
I'm still not entirely convinced this was the best strategy for development and direction for a sequel. I'm excited for the new features that are planned, but the roadmap is long, and what we have right now is barely more than a tech demo, and I seriously don't think it's worth the $30 right now. This was more or less acceptable for Space Engineers 1, when they were an exceptionally small studio, that ultimately added more features than planned to the game, and needed the support of its community to continue working on it, but they have the benefit of hindsight now, and are more successful than they were 10 years ago; the expectations should be justifiably higher, and I think it would have been better to continue development until more features were ready that made it stand out as a substantial improvement over SE1. A lot of the QoL features that were added are just small improvements or stuff that could have been very feasibly added to SE1. Essentially I think they're trying too hard to copy the development strategy of SE1, instead of leveraging their larger size and better resources to deliver a more differentiated product. And that's not even to get into how they could have added new optional features that would have substantially altered the way the game plays; a new version is the chance to strip the game down to the engine, and build foundational stuff that really drastically adds new stuff to the game. They could make worlds modular and connected, like ATLAS, or the X series. They could have reworked the crafting process ala industrial overhaul for better progression, they could implement research or grind to learn. The water is about the only thing that's planned that I think meets this criteria, yes NPCs are an important feature, but we're talking about technology that has existed in other games for decades. NPCs are the bare minimum. I completely understand why they didn't get too radical with updates to SE1; they had a game that more or less worked for what it was, and going in a weird direction risks alienating people, breaking the product or the gameplay. And right when they were looking at SE2, I'm sure spaghetti code, and other growing pains from a 10 year old version made it highly impractical to add things like water. But a sequel frees you from this restriction. They don't even have a minimum viable product for what they want to do (it does not have a core gameplay loop). That's where they should have started: A basic build with the core features, and then spent some weeks or months doing focused play testing around new gameplay loops and changes. They could have gotten a mix of new and old players and just asked them "what's fun? What works? Does this idea, which we have semi functional have promise." But it's rather evident to me that they haven't done any of that. They just made a "sequel" that's practically a carbon copy of SE1, using some new graphical technology, and barely even a quarter of the blocks in SE1. I'm genuinely concerned for what they may (or may not do), moving forward, but also want them to succeed. I'm really hoping they figure it out, but for now, I can't support them with my purchase.
"Why release like this?" Multiple reasons: -Funding -Feedback -Start building hype/community up Accessibility is a big big drive for Marek if not the whole team. I will buy it just like SE1. Have thousands of hours in it, but i wont play the second part until its on a level with SE1. At the moment it feels more like a huge downgrade that will take 3-4 years to get on par. Still its amazing to see them continue and the only thing i really wanted more from SE1 was NPCs that actually build, expand or attack your Mountain bunker ^^
Getting a handle on voxels was a big step back in the day. In SE1 (in the beginning), more than half the time mining resulted in you and/or your ship disappearing into inner space. This is clearly a tech demo. The new game engine allows things that were just not possible with the old game engine. As with all new things there will be problems, but as KEEN has ultimately demonstrated with SE1, they will be resolved. For now, don't buy until you understand the state of the game and are willing to accept it as is. For me, the improvement in lighting is worth the investment, and I am sure the rest of the game, when released, will be a worthy successor to SE1
The developers of KSP 2 said the same thing. “We’re fully funded” were their exact words. Keen has a history of abandoning project, and while I don’t actually expect Keen will quit development of their main IP, I don’t think I’ll bet $30 on it. Not while the “game” is in this state.
They have to drop SE1 if they ever want to get SE2 into some usable form. They are too small of a team to work on 2 games. And given their 'speed' with updates for SE1, even making 1 game will tax them
Interesting about the perf issues since didn't they demo this off not long ago and it was decent framerate then. Looked like it was on high back then but who knows.
I have SE2 on a list to maybe purchase later down the line, or the friend that bought SE1 for me will just buy it for me again despite me telling her not to.
I don't see what big change SE 2 is going to bring something really different to the spaceship Grid building game genre. Most ship grid building games all add something different, but still almost none have solved the question as to the 'why'? I mean like its cool to build a space ship and all, I like doing that too, but what is the in game reason to do so? SE survival is not really difficult, its just tedious is all. The only Space Engineers content that (in my opinion) give a reason to do these actions is have a progression system between the blocks, but also make everything matter, a good example in space Engineers is the sigma draconis expanse server. But if you want another space game, I would put it to be Cosmoteer, in that game you need to kill other ships to get bounty contracts completed, where you can use that to get money to get schematics to build better blocks, and also a reason to update ship designs based on different kind of weapons, etc. I mean I am not going to say I hope the game fails or something, I just hope that they actually give a reason to do these things.
What are your system specs @CaptainShack? The fact you had to turn it to medium from high to get some better framerate was crazy. Hoping they push some drivers to the three graphics platforms to stabilize the gameplay.
I have a 3070 and ryzen 5600 and my framerate was great at high settings. It's 100% that his pc is being maxed out by SE2's raytracing + streaming the game at the same time.
when you have a whole cake and i give you 1 slice......... that does not mean the rest does not exist. because keen has it. we have seen gameplay of water and multiplayer thos parts are more less done and part of a different slice literally. we will see the slices merge as they give us more "cake"
Each phase of development that is already something in SE1...will take maybe a bit more than half as long to put into SE2. Elements of SE2 that do NOT exist in SE1...will probably take much, much longer than even features in SE1. They're using a new engine, but it's not something they're unfamiliar with, and also they already know how certain functions should work. It's just a question of implementation in the new engine, and working out the kinks. Should be a much faster development track. But we'll see.
Early access should never be this expensive. However I know what the problem is. The problem is that if devs would put up early access for the price it SHOULD be, so for example 15$ tops. People would buy that and the game company would sell all their copies at 15$ instead of 30$ or 60 full price. That’s why they release “early access” for full price. Solution? Don’t release anything that isn’t 1.0 like back in 2005.
With how barebones and similar it looks to the first game, this better be much higher quality with none of the clang or janky physics. Otherwise why even bother with it?
As someone who has played SE1 since 2013 I just struggle to think of anything I want to actually DO with this. There's three functional blocks, there's no metrics for weight or thrust. No power use. No storage, no functional tools, no weapons. All decoration is DIY. Extremely limited colour palette. It looks pretty. Compared to SE1. But like SE1 it doesn't look especially pretty for it's day. I feel like I played hundreds of hours of this in 2013. I think I'm mostly going to be playing SE1 for the foreseeable. Still got plenty of Factorum stuff to do.
ill have a whole catalog of blueprint moduls by the time this game comes out full.... the idea of SE is a DIY game why have any issues with DIY decoration? that was one main issue i had with se1 now i can make decoration and save as a blueprint
@@Only_Some Hey if you're having fun I'm not going to tell you to stop. I was just hoping there would be a bit more meat on that skeleton before they pushed it out to the public. As it stands you can't even build a proper ion ship without it being rendered obsolete as soon as they implement the power mechanics. I've already done that dance from 2013 to 2016.
The more often we see these types of "releases" (think KSP2 maybe) the less I am optimistic. Especially games with large community following, modding and contributions really should find a solution to not divide their fanbase. A game like Robocraft (if you maybe played it 7 years ago) alao tried to do a sequel whose annoucmenet was soo badly receive that they published a blogpost saying a return to the game in 2016 is what they will try instead. That blogpost was a year ago and last week - the annouced the studio closure and the delisting and shutting down of the servers. So maybe the way Valve did it with CS2 over CSGO is the best way? The game is out for 1.5 years now and just fully replaced the old game. Still missing like half of the game modes and maps. They ported over all economy and some workshop stuff... But also massively improved the workshop tools. But stuff like trading cards are still stuck on the old game. Achivements have been removed etc...
Unfortunately it has become the norm for developers to release completely unfinished products for sale and expect people to pay them for unfinished work. I am unsure why people are willing to fork over the money with the promise of a finished product. Gamers are just idiots for continuing to allow this to be a succesful business model. Once the planets are installed, survival works and the base game functions similar to 1.0 I'm in, I can wait for mods but this is unacceptable.
I would rather a unfinished game that continuous updates where I can influence the direction of the game then a game hidden away for 8 years like cyber punk. This is built on a upgraded engine and stuff takes time to develop and money is limited. TH-camrs will buy it and cover updates where some people will wait till its finished.
You're aware the game is in early access right? They clearly communicated with the fanbase to let them know the features they would and wouldn't be getting. The whole point of the game releasing now is to gather community feedback so the game can be the best it can. Keen have released a roadmap as well so we know what order we're getting updates in and won't be disappointed with what we get. They've got a support website where you can leave complaints or suggestions or bug reports to have fixed or implemented. To top it all off they're regularly updating us on how development is going. In my eyes this is a best case scenario, 100% better than just leaving us in the dark and eventually releasing the game.
Once upon a time people actually understood the concept of what an alpha or beta was, the norm hasn't become devs releasing unfinished products the norm changed to people being too stupid or impatient to read/understand what they are actually getting into. An alpha or beta is not meant to be a finished game for anyone to play and enjoy, it always has been and continues to be a test bed for developers to get feedback from their fans on what works and doesn't work so that they can tweek as they go and eventually release a finished polished product. Unfortunately somewhere along the way the "testers" stopped caring about the testing and just started screaming that the game was unfinished and shady development teams stopped treating alphas and betas as the tests they are supposed to be. Keen has been perfectly clear from the start that this is an alpha and of you aren't interested in what it has dont buy it until you see something you want. It has been a standard practice for decades to offer guaranteed access to alphas and/or betas to people who preordered the game while those that didn't preorder would be selected at random if they needed more testers....this is nothing even remotely new and it used to work great for dedicated fans and devs alike but as I said before "gamers" quit giving a shit about the testing portion and just started treating alphas and betas as getting to play the game early and quit giving any feedback to the devs and instead just took to social media to trash talk the game that wasn't even released yet because they are too much of a bunch of impatient Karen ass idiots to understand the simplest concepts.
your getting a lot of long messages from people. But don't let that get you down. I agree. Its a disapointment. Alpha release is fine but to release SE2 in the same gameplay loop as SE1 seems silly and short sighted. They dont need player feedback to develop into the core basic gameplay loops of SE1. So why release so early? Keen has also abandoned projects in EA in the past. So yeah... its ok to be disapointed in this release.
Keen release an incomplete game that is unfinished and make us wait for things that are in Space Engineers 1 that we had to wait years for? Then years later they will start charging $5 for block dlcs? Color me shocked.
This is my feedback comment. I might make other comments: I think it's great how much more flexible and interesting the new grid building system is. However, I really really don't like it when a sequel to a title comes out, even in early access, with less features than it's predecessor. I do not think releasing this was a good idea. If you want testers then get testers. Please don't charge money for demos like this. _"But people are told what they are buying! They know it's early access and if they didn't then that's their fault!"_ Yeah, don't care. I did not want to see this be a repeat of 2013. 2013 was 2013. It's 2025. Why would you repeat this? I'm tired of this "early access (but actually pay to be a tester)" shit. It feels like we're going backwards. Releases like this when you already have a separate and fully functional game to compare it to just damage your brand. Thanks for streaming and showing us, CaptainShack.
They can "Say" anything keen wants. Fact is the game is 30$ on steam. So we have to talk about whats actually available. Reviews luckly can be change. Opinions can shift. But no one forced them to release in a 2013 game loop state. That was a choice. Thats whats here.
Why do I feel like you’re the only level headed TH-camr regarding this release. Sure, I’m excited about SE2 too, but I don’t see any good reason to release the product like this. And besides from some core engine improvements, we’ve yet to hear what will actually truly set SE2 apart from SE.
arguably SE1 is still an alpha tech demo (with extremely overpriced predatory DLC on top of it), even after all these years... seriouesly how do people still give these devs money?!
The worst 10% of the stream comments are a fine example of why I turn off the idiot feed. Realtime responses just don't allow for much depth in thoughtful comments, either good or bad. "The UI looks bad" JFC on a crutch, I'd like what is a GD placeholder for $400, Alex. "Why did they take so long to make so little game?" "Wow such bad optimization" "This game sux" "I don't know how game development works." "I like to eat glue and blurt out my ignorance 24/7" Ugh. XD I'm not a huge fan of Star Citizen, but the comments there, on KCD 2, and every other game in early development ever are always the same. Gamers are a big reason why we can't have nice things. Non-gamers interfering with things they don't understand or care about is another, I guess. :P At this stage, SE2 looks pretty nice. I like KSH's overall approach to communication and expectation management (learned through many hard lessons and missteps with often toxic gamers who overreact to anything that threatens to change their personal pet features). However long SE2 will take, it'll probably be faster and more fruitful per unit money put into development than SC. :D I don't need survival mode to enjoy SE1 or 2, but I'll probably wait for more of the physics stuff (voxel materials and collisions, maybe subgrids, etc) to be put in or iterated. Looking forward to ship races!
To be totally honest, all I see in the future of Space Engineers 2 is the return of KSP2 Electric Boogaloo. There is simply too little content, so little in fact that despite the improved look and Grid changes, the first Space Engineers is objectively vastly superior.
$30 for a tech demo with no assurance that anything promised in the roadmap will ever actually be added within a reasonable time frame. Also wouldn't be too surprised if it goes the way of Medieval Engineers edit: it also shouldn't require the absolute best tech just to barely run at the bare minimum of 60 fps at decent settings (i.e stuff like the 4090 ti)
@ After Working over 10 years on SE1, KEEN should already know how a proper game looks like. So why releasing just 5%? 🤨 And disappointing was, what I could see in this video, lag, bugs, …
@@BabylonFPVIm 99% positive that the lag in this is bc he was recording and streaming at the same time. I ran it on my RTX 2070 and it ran better than SE1. The only noticeable lag was spiking when it saved.

HAS to be because he is streaming and recording at the same time. I play on a laptop and didn't have to drop the settings.
I have a 3070 and ryzen 5600 and my framerate was great at high settings. It's 100% that his pc is being maxed out by SE2's raytracing + streaming the game at the same time.
Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-12900H. 32.0 GB Ram. RTX 3070Ti
when you have a whole cake and i give you 1 slice......... that does not mean the rest does not exist. because keen has it. we have seen gameplay of water and multiplayer thos parts are more less done and part of a different slice literally. we will see the slices merge as they give us more "cake"
all I want to do here is to familiarize with hotkeys and design ships
Each phase of development that is already something in SE1...will take maybe a bit more than half as long to put into SE2. Elements of SE2 that do NOT exist in SE1...will probably take much, much longer than even features in SE1.
They're using a new engine, but it's not something they're unfamiliar with, and also they already know how certain functions should work. It's just a question of implementation in the new engine, and working out the kinks. Should be a much faster development track.
But we'll see.
hmm fire in space
I've already done that dance from 2013 to 2016.
it would be funny if he was watching this stream
The more often we see these types of "releases" (think KSP2 maybe) the less I am optimistic. Especially games with large community following, modding and contributions really should find a solution to not divide their fanbase.
A game like Robocraft (if you maybe played it 7 years ago) alao tried to do a sequel whose annoucmenet
was soo badly receive that they published a blogpost saying a return to the game in 2016 is what they will try instead.
Dude, Marek said "Don't buy it", so... just don't?
your getting a lot of long messages from people.
Man they already know what we want from Space Engineers and they gave us the same tech demo in a new engine. Wildcard is that you??
I really hope they don't require RayTracing...
It doesn't, you can turn it off, but the minimum requirements for GFX card on Steam are GeForce 1660 Super / Radeon RX 5600 XT / Intel B580 or higher
So was Miner Wars. Screw these guys.
Its looks visually the same as SE1
This is my feedback comment. I might make other comments:
I think it's great how much more flexible and interesting the new grid building system is.
Somebody dint pay attention on what keen said so many times…
get use to hearing yourself say that LMAO
@ ? Clearly you dont understand
The curse of 2
arguably SE1 is still an alpha tech demo (with extremely overpriced predatory DLC on top of it), even after all these years... seriouesly how do people still give these devs money?!
After they burned me on that medieval game I put them on my do not buy list
Just waiting for mods....and maybe mods on Xbox so people will actually play it 😆 🤣 😂
The worst 10% of the stream comments are a fine example of why I turn off the idiot feed. Realtime responses just don't allow for much depth in thoughtful comments, either good or bad.
"The UI looks bad" JFC on a crutch, I'd like what is a GD placeholder for $400, Alex.
"Why did they take so long to make so little game?"
"Wow such bad optimization"
"This game sux"
"I don't know how game development works."
"I like to eat glue and blurt out my ignorance 24/7"
Ugh. XD
I'm not a huge fan of Star Citizen, but the comments there, on KCD 2, and every other game in early development ever are always the same. Gamers are a big reason why we can't have nice things. Non-gamers interfering with things they don't understand or care about is another, I guess. :P
At this stage, SE2 looks pretty nice.
This should have been a free demo, not a $30 game.
Also wouldn't be too surprised if it goes the way of Medieval Engineers
edit: it also shouldn't require the absolute best tech just to barely run at the bare minimum of 60 fps at decent settings (i.e stuff like the 4090 ti)
I ran it at medium with a descent laptop and was getting just fine performance
Brother it ran better on max settings than SE1 does normally for me. RTX 2070.
Its such a disappointment… 😔
What did you expect, you were told clearly what you would be getting at this stage
@ After Working over 10 years on SE1, KEEN should already know how a proper game looks like. So why releasing just 5%? 🤨
And disappointing was, what I could see in this video, lag, bugs, …
@@BabylonFPV Most of the dev time was invested in the new engine
@@BabylonFPVIm 99% positive that the lag in this is bc he was recording and streaming at the same time. I ran it on my RTX 2070 and it ran better than SE1. The only noticeable lag was spiking when it saved.
@ if the lag was because of streaming, the lag should only be seen on the video and not recognized while gaming
