    brought here by Sky posting an interview with Andy Cole after his transfer.
    It's amazing to look back on how massive a transfer this was, I guess the modern equivalant might be Torres going to Chelsea (although Cole was clearly better for United than Torres was for Chelsea). Agent/Player power was so different back in 1995.

    I am old enough to remember Newcastle winning THE Cup 3 times - and nothing since. Beating Oopsy Daisy in some 3rd rate competition does not count as a real success. Unfortunatley I have seen them lose 3 times at Wembley too.
    There are simple reasons for this, and all down to the likes of Seymour, McKaig, Hall, Shepherd(s); Cashley, etc. They sell exceptionally good players for more than they cost and replace them (sometimes) with inferior players.
    Just listen to Hall and Keegan. They claim Newcastle will go on to be successful. Since then they have been regularly relegated, regularly threatened with relegation. Even this season - started reasonably, given that they do not have anybody who can consistently hit the target, let alone score goals, but now dropping to the level of their real ability. I remember saying about 1960 Newcastle would not win the league in my lifetime. I expect to live a little while yet, but still have confidence in my prediction.

    • @NewcastleUnited19801994Videos
      @NewcastleUnited19801994Videos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great post.
      At this point, Newcastle were still building to compete and win something. Between 1992 and 1997, Keegan continued to buy better players to try and win that elusive silverware. I was devastated when we sold Cole but you could say playing with out and out wingers and a target man WAS the improvement that was needed to do so. Alas, we fell short.
      We've been relegated twice since this video - twice in 28 years. Thats not regular? And neither is being relegated only 4 times since 1978?
      You could be right with your prediction on the league title but there is no way we're out of the champs lge race.

    • @alanmcdonald4423
      @alanmcdonald4423 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NewcastleUnited19801994VideosBut we did not win anything. As you say "Alas we fell short". ONLY relegated 4 times is indeed a regular occurrence. Better teams in the league do not have the same consistency. Agreed some are worse, but add in the near misses or half the season and more being in the danger zone and it is very regularly a concern for all supporters.
      As you suggest, two wingers and a goalscorer has to be an improvement on other forms of attempting to score goals. At present a goalscorer is sadly lacking.

      @@NewcastleUnited19801994Videos How can you say that era was brilliant? We won nothing.
      There was a time when we were the highest in FA Cup wins. Allow for memory - maybe equal with Blackburn. Last time we won was 1955. 45 seconds in is the most exciting (not the most important) moment of my long life. Some folks were born and died since then. Even anybody below retirement age has not had the thrill of winning the cup.
      I remember when Sunderland were the only team never to have been relegated. It was unthinkable that it might happen to us. How many seasons have you wondered that it might ? Sometimes it did.

      Factor in we haven't come anywhere near winning the title since...so yes, it was brilliant to anyone of my vintage who witnessed it.
      The cup wins you mentioned were well before my time.
      But back to the current day, we're in a good position and moving forward. Its your call if you can't see that.

    Surprised Keegan didnt try for Stan Collymore. According to Collymore's book, his agent Paul Stretford was close to sealing a deal with Man Utd, but when Cole became a possibility they dropped it. Forest would have sold for a cheeky £7 million bid. And Collymore was so highly rated at the time, it would have been as big as the Cole deal.
    Gascoigne was a surprise as well. He was available that summer. You'd have thought Keegan would have been well in there with a bid.

I reckon he was just used as a diversion so the andy cole transfer could run smoothly without the press getting wind of what was going on. Aye, its difficult to work out the true story as Cole has publicly said he didn't want to leave, but couldn't turn Man Utd down whilst Keegan said he (cole) didn't appear interested around that time so thought it best to cash in and move on. It backfired as we ended up 6th after such a great first few months. Losing Sellers to injury was a huge blow too.

    Andy Cole was a good striker but he did miss a lot of chances as well though, but when you’re getting four or five good chances a game and score once or maybe twice the missed chances are largely forgotten, as opposed to playing in an average side when you might get one good chance in a game and when you miss it’s remembered more but as Kevin Keegan says in his book he suspected that Cole had been tapped up and his attitude hadn’t been good in training for a couple of months, he’d only scored one league goal from late October to January, his relationship with Keegan had soured a bit and Keegan was offered £7 million and Keith Gillespie and that was a huge amount of money in 1995 so he went to John Hall and explained those reasons, that they should take it when Cole’s stock was still high and felt he could buy better players, he bought Les Ferdinand and David Ginola and the team was overall stronger going forward but I think he should have used some of it to buy a centre half and by the following season John Hall was trying to persuade Keegan to buy a defender when the title was within reach but they’re were leaking goals.

      Great post. I read an old chronicle yesterday and it stated that Cole had already been sold before the Blackburn cup game (his final appearance). First i've heard of that but yeah, we trusted keegan and he almost got it right although I still think he should never have cashed in on Cole. Gillespie was brilliant mind, really loved his direct wing play and at one point was supplying more goals and assists than Ginola.
