Fun fact: Michael Haigney chose Charmander's voice on the basis of seriously believing it would only show up in this episode and absolutely nothing else. It was only after actually looking at upcoming episodes, after recording this one, that he realized "Shit, I'm gonna be putting on that falsetto and forming sentences with the syllables of "Charmander" for quite some time." This is also the man who would later be the director of the Sonic X dub while admitting he's 100% unfamiliar with anything Sonic-related and doesn't know the first thing about the basic plot or any of the characters. 4Kids didn't fucking care right from the very start.

In the episode where Ash considers evolving Pikachu, there's this weird thing in the anime where a pokemon can totally change personalities when it evolves. It's a way for the writers to avoid making Charizard OP, but its pretty dumb.
I mean, it's part of the games; if you have a Pokémon with a too high level when you have too few badges, they will often ignore you. So I guess it's supposed to reference that.
I think the answer lies in what Charmander's origins were. It was an abused child, and then it was essentially a traded pokemon. As it's still young it's still pretty happy-go-lucky, but one could imagine that after it quickly acquired more power, and still remembering how awful humans can be, it just develops a complex in it's adolescent phase, and needed more development with Ash. While it's all meant to mirror the games in how traded pokemon gain levels faster and can be defiant if overllevelled, the realistic dynamic of it basically means that great power without enough bonding and maturity can create problems. I mean it's basically an adopted kid being used for a human's goal, you'd think more pokemon would end up like him.
yeah if you think about it ash should get bulbasaur misty should get squirtle and brock gets charmander...ash getting all 3 starters is kind of pointless especially since he only evolved 1 of them and it cost him at the indigo league
His tail is like an EKG. If you pour water on charmander's tail, it wouldn't die. There's a scene in Pokemon Origins where charizard is literally underwater and his tail is still lit.

the thing about charmanders flame going out killing it is that its actually a gross misunderstanding on the animation companies behalf. When a charmanders tail goes out it does die, and it goes out when it dies, but it can't just be "put out" by dunking it in water or whatever. (in pokemon origins, Reds charizard is fully submerged underwater and its tail keeps burning) Their tails get smaller and go out from things like being sick or starving etc, which is why it can be used as a measure of how healthy they are.
