Matt's love for Charles always makes him belittle Carlos. Ferrari was way off the pace and yet he out qualified Perez, had a great start but eventually lost to the Red Bulls because of the car's pace. Also he gave A to Perez for losing out to Sainz on quali, having a horrendous start and losing to his teammate by a big margin despite max starting p14. Also he said this was the first time Carlos matched Leclerc's pace. His favouritism has clouded his judgement so much that he doesn't even remember that Sainz was faster in France, out-quallified Leclerc in Hungary. When Sainz won in Silverstone and Leclerc finished p4, he rightfully blamed Ferrari and didn't give any credit to Sainz. But when Carlos had to retire because of engine failure, but Charles won, he deemed it to be a great weekend.
@@anchitjaiswal299 Not belittling perez, just pointed out that perez didn't have a good weekend, yet matt rated Sainz lower than perez who achieved the best possible position.

The cars look amazing going around Spa. Thrilled they kept it for next year. If we lost Spa but kept vertigo inducing France and the Miami car park I would be beside myself.
How did you guys give Perez an A? He started from p2 and got beaten by his Max by 18 secs who started in p14. Perez also made loads of mistakes such as in quali and at the start.
Rn Max and his car (with new components) are in another level and no one is even close to them. I think Checo getting an A is fair. I wouldn't say he made a mistake in quali since he did beat Charles and Carlos got a tow from Charles and Perez didn't get that from Max.Not sure where you get the "loads of mistakes" tbh, to me there was only 1, his start. Yes he messed up big time at the start but he fixed his mistake quickly by overtaking Russell right before the Hamilton/Alonso incident (even if that didn't happen he woulda overtaken them pretty quickly as well, at worst as soon as DRS was enabled). After that he didn't really have an issue catching up and overtaking Carlos, defended perfectly against Leclerc in his 1 and only attack, and then put a 9-10 second gap with Carlos and just went into cruise mode for the rest of the race. The only chance he had at beating Max was if everyone else tried to defend against him as he was making his way through the grid, which no one did since he was flying and strategically speaking it didn't make sense for them to waste time fighting him when there were other cars they actually had a chance against.
Yeah but that's a pity win. If Checo is not fast enough do you think that RB and Max will say ok let him carry on...I don't think so. Schumacher fought for wins even after winning a championship that's how records are broken
57:58 We would never have heard anyone of you saying two years ago about Bottas, that "you know he showed really good pace sometimes, caught the second driver of the second fastest car and secured 1-2", and then giving him an A for that. Those results were always a low B for him, at best. If not C, because of the bad start, and "in a championship winning car, you just can't make that bad starts and you gotta pick up your game".
I say this as a Max and McClaren fan. Toto wolf saying that the car is undriveable says to me that he is competitive and wants to get up at the top again as soon as possible. He is not scared to make drastic changes to the car. And I actually can really appreciate that.
22:00 I agree to this very much, one of the reasons I hate MB. I feel pity for our german design team I have nothing but utmost respect to them being studying in stuttgart. But when you keep on calling this car undrivable which is definitely the 3rd best car sometimes 2nd best, that doesnt help anyone. You are clearing mocking your design team which have given you 8 world championships
they haven't called it undrivable in a long time tho. that was in the first third of the season, when it indeed was a handful and looked awful to drive (btw even in Hungary in the practice sessions it was all over the place) but recently they have simply just been critical of the car's performance, which i'd take over whatever the hell Ferrari do week in week out after they fuck things up. and it's exactly because of those 8 world championships that the expectations are so high at the team
Toto Wolff and him being overly apologetic to -mainly- Hamilton, him talking about an undriveble car is sooo disrespectful to Russell and the other teams. George is right up there with the Ferrari drivers, and 24 points clear of Lewis while having one less podium place. Clearly the Mercedes team results are welll below their own expectations, but a disaster it is not. Unless of course Toto thinks that the other teams are just a bunch of amateurs.
the new F1 22 patch is crazy. they buffed Max's AI way too much, he just breezed through the pack- What? what do you mean that wasn't a replay from the game?

49:31 As a tear-off causes the most harm and is the highest risk to a brake duct, teams could add some carbon threads/wires at the front of the inlet. If the inlet is angled a bit, the tear-off is likely to be blown aside. In the end, for teams, is weighed in a risk-reward/cost-benefit analysis.
Verstappen got a 3-place grid penalty for Russia due to the Monza crash last year. Which was wayyyy more 50-50 than Hamilton on Alonso at Spa. Why doesn’t Hamilton get at least a 3-place grid penalty after this one? Alonso could claim that his damaged front wing ruined his race??
but it didn't ruin his race and Hamilton took himself out, no penalty needed because the situation resolved itself In the monza crash both drivers were out but Max was deemed at fault, so because he took Lewis completely out of the race he was given a penalty. Alonso didn't suffer anything at all
@@fkez0510 according to stewards and certain Mercedes fans, you cant judge situation by the outcome, only by the action. The fact that it "didnt hurt Alonsos race" (it did, he lost several positions, hurt his tyres by going off track and had his car damaged) means nothing, because Hamilton caused collision and it was 100% his fault. Wasnt even "predominantly" at fault this time. It should have been penalty, but they obviously wont penalize Hamilton, because he will cry and make up some ridiculous statements, which will hurt F1 image.
@@thelarry383 this team was nowhere near top3 for years. They should be grateful for these few years of domination they had and focus on improving current car rather than arrogantly assuming 1st place should be granted for them and other teams must be cheating.
40:30 Lando got a midfield podium and the only midfield podium in Imola where Sainz got yeeted by Danny Ric and Charles binned it into the wall at the end (they were also faster than Mercedes that weekend)
It is and it's caused quite a few problems (George last year comes to mind). It's just not been so obviously caused the problem between the 2 championship leaders. There's even a rule in the regs that say drivers are supposed to keep the tear offs in the car and not let them fly away.
Hamilton should have gotten a penalty. Not a grid drop or anything, maybe a 10 second penalty which would have been meaningless, but not giving him a penalty because he was out anyways shows penalty points are meaningless and they gave em to Max like candy last year.

That was a compelling camera shot of Sir Lewis making the long walk back to the paddock. You couldn’t even see the track. One wonders what the seven-time world champion was thinking about.
Great comment on the ride height. Looking at the times, RBR was like 0.6% faster than Ferrari and 0.3% faster than the field over other races. It will be interested to see the difference the next races. I don't know that all of the difference is due to the RB18 tolerated ride height better - certainly a good chunk of the speed performance, but I'd be surprised if some of it wasn't due to the technical regulations.

Meanwhile, they announced that Spa will remain in the calendar, which is of course great, but that means that there will be no race in South Africa. The reason behind it: They still want to bleed organizers with 30 million dollars fees, but in South Africa they can't charge thousands of dollars for a ticket like in Vegas. In fact, if you noticed, the F1 management and drivers are not blabbering any more about equality, rights, etc. They shifted the conversation on women in F1.
On Perez and not finishing ahead of Sainz in the Quali, Sainz had a tow from Leclerc for his pole lap. Perez didn't have a tow at all. We were actually kinda shocked to see the likes of Ferrari & Alpine giving each of their drivers a run with a tow, while RB had Max get a tow and then pit and get out of the car after his run without giving Perez a tow.
I don’t think Sainz had a tow on the lap that he set his fastest qualifying time. I think he got the tow on the lap that he had been jockeying for position between the Alpines.
Season prediction to make the season more interesting. FIA will "find" that Red Bull ignored the cost cap and fine them. Max and Sergio are panelized 100 championship points each and Red Bull is disqualified from the Constructors Championship. But would that be enough to slow them down?
On my unbranded soapbox, standardised floors , narrower cars, narrower front wings, lower downforce. Solves porpoising, dark art of flexifloors and smaller front wings would encourage mixing it.
I think redbull will dominate the rest of the season. Win the WDC with the WCC and max break the win record in a single season. Will be pretty historic
How the hell did Perez get an A?? What the.... He finished 18(!) seconds behind his teammate in the same car, whilst said teammate started P14 and he P2. And that start was horrible. Honestly, this grade baffles me.
Remember that being quicker on Saturday doesn't always mean being quicker on Sunday. There are examples of Ferrari just not having the pace on Sunday for some reason, even beyond the mistakes of the team and drivers. Red Bull seemed to be better focused on race day than qualifying all season. Ferrari didn't have the fastest car earlier in the season, it was dependent on the track and if they got the setup right, either Ferrari or Red Bull.

Max also gave away 1.3 seconds on his drift/burnout as well. And what’s insane is GP was constantly telling Max to lift and coast and lift off throttle through 7 & 9. He was literally just managing with the engine turned down and was still about .6-1.0 seconds faster than anyone. Even Leclerc on fresh softs and drs was 6 tenths off Max’s fast lap on heavy fuel and medium tires.. Honestly shocking. Im a Max fan and even I can recognize with that kind of gap over everyone including your teammate in the same car as well as his main rival Leclerc, it makes you think what the hell. It seems they barely brought upgrades, added the TD enforced floor, and still haven’t had their light chassis worth .2-.3 tenths it’s kind of like what changed type of thing. But I think it’s simple. Max Verstappens raw speed and talents finally shown with an EXCEPTIONAL car. He’s had a good car in 2021 and carried it to new heights. In 2022 it was a Sergio favored characteristics the first half and then as they’ve upgraded it Max has been upping his game and it all came to a head at Spa. Jaw dropping performance made it look easy. Even if you hate Max that was a SCHUMI/Hamilton performance if I’ve ever witnessed one. Austria in 2021 & Mexico 2021 is the only other time I remember this from max in race. But this was through out the weekend dominance.

I thought Ferrari had it in the bag this season, because that car was so fast it was visibly noticeable. Ferrari pit wall killed their chances this year. McLaren gave their drivers a four wheeled brick for this season. Even when El Plan doesn't work, it works. I love Alonso.
Lewis' drive was way more impressive. there was a championship on the line for him, and with 4 races left to keep his title hopes alive he had to win and overtake his title rival, who was doing his best to take both of them out of the race. here Verstappen was driving without any pressure and opponents (the only car that could have challenged him was Perez, but after Verstappen complained about being stuck behind him he let him by lol)
Closing the field requires a few more years of budget cap and stable regulations. The level of the team's operations are very different, as RBR vs Ferrari shows us.
I disagree in the visor tear off thing. I definitely think drivers should not be allowed to be thrown away. It’s a literal thin sheet of plastic. If seb can do it and he’s won 4 WC doing it, I think others can also. It was a few races ago that Sainz (or maybe again Leclerc) got one in his air intakes and lost performance too. Remember Massa? I know platic is not as hard as metal, but if it gets in a driver’s eyes right when he’s about to break for a heavy breaking zone from 350kmh? Then he misses the breaking points because he lost half a second clearing his visor of the tear-off that flew from the opponent?

Aren't you somewhat belittling Perez?
@@anchitjaiswal299 Not really, he's pointing out that Max belittled Checo by being so much faster.
@@anchitjaiswal299 Not belittling perez, just pointed out that perez didn't have a good weekend, yet matt rated Sainz lower than perez who achieved the best possible position.
To be fair, the mediums vs hards question for Leclerc was a rare case where it probably didn't really matter. He was likely finishing P5 either way.
F1 should hire your guys to be the official commentators!
This is much more fun to listen and though you guys clearly let us know who your favorites are, yet being able to give us the information and opinions without any bias at all. Best TH-cam channel for F1 peroid!
Alonso purposefully slowed down to get DRS when Leclerc came out for sure
Great podcast y'all. Thanks for all the content week in, week out.
The cars look amazing going around Spa. Thrilled they kept it for next year. If we lost Spa but kept vertigo inducing France and the Miami car park I would be beside myself.
the race was boring has hel
I think that Red Bull already is focussing now on '23
Katie's turning into a legend on these & Matt is just so done with the year :'D
How did you guys give Perez an A? He started from p2 and got beaten by his Max by 18 secs who started in p14. Perez also made loads of mistakes such as in quali and at the start.
yeah wtf. he got wiped
I think we need a A** for Max. It wasn't Perez being particularly bad, but Max being too good
Checo was great after his poor start, but his PU is v old, and Max’s was brand new.
@@cristinasada1597 no thats cope. His pu was new in Hungary. So only 1 race old.
My hope is that checo can win Mexico, considering how great a wingman he’s been, RB should push to get him that win imo.
Yeah but that's a pity win. If Checo is not fast enough do you think that RB and Max will say ok let him carry on...I don't think so. Schumacher fought for wins even after winning a championship that's how records are broken
@@BookishGoodWitch very true, but I can imagine lol
You are clearing mocking your design team which have given you 8 world championships
they haven't called it undrivable in a long time tho. that was in the first third of the season, when it indeed was a handful and looked awful to drive (btw even in Hungary in the practice sessions it was all over the place)
but recently they have simply just been critical of the car's performance, which i'd take over whatever the hell Ferrari do week in week out after they fuck things up. and it's exactly because of those 8 world championships that the expectations are so high at the team
german design team? its designed in the UK dude.

Unless of course Toto thinks that the other teams are just a bunch of amateurs.
the new F1 22 patch is crazy. they buffed Max's AI way too much, he just breezed through the pack-
What? what do you mean that wasn't a replay from the game?
Where did you get the Raytracing version of F1 22?
actually in the game he is prone to making lot more mistakes
An absolute clinic by Max Verstappen and Red Bull, that team is one well-oiled machine, the pit stops, the strategy and of course the car.
Max’s drive this weekend reminded me of the days of Schumacher and Ferrari dominance. Completely calm, in control and unspectacular. Absolutely no one could touch him.
I love spa but this race was a complete snooze fest for me personally. I’m not sure even why it was so boring
The tear-off was actually from Lance Stroll who was ahead of Max at that point. Max's tear-off flew over Leclerc's car
Alonso leaving Alpine is baffling to me, especially when it's for AM. This is a huge step back.
Verstappen got a 3-place grid penalty for Russia due to the Monza crash last year. Which was wayyyy more 50-50 than Hamilton on Alonso at Spa. Why doesn’t Hamilton get at least a 3-place grid penalty after this one? Alonso could claim that his damaged front wing ruined his race??
but it didn't ruin his race and Hamilton took himself out, no penalty needed because the situation resolved itself
In the monza crash both drivers were out but Max was deemed at fault, so because he took Lewis completely out of the race he was given a penalty. Alonso didn't suffer anything at all
Alonso also said after the race that it was a lap 1 incident
Because it was Hamilton’s corner by the new rules. He’s not gonna get penalized cus they CHANGED THE RULES
And Here Comes Sebastian Vettel! Once again, Seb had a storming 1st lap!
@43:27 "That's quality" made me choke on my lunch. That was hilarious!
The F1 TV Tech Talk video for the Belgian GP was more interesting that the entirety of Sunday's race.
Completely agree with Katy that Mercedes is comfortably the third best car and calling it a shitbox is petulant
3rd place isn't a standard for Mercedes. Anything less than first is total failure. We're not talking about the lower teams
@@thelarry383 this team was nowhere near top3 for years. They should be grateful for these few years of domination they had and focus on improving current car rather than arrogantly assuming 1st place should be granted for them and other teams must be cheating.
This was definitely the best theme so far.!!!! Just too good

What Kathy said on the situation at Mercedes was spot on! 👌👍
As entertaining as Alonso's comment on Hamilton was, for me it really showed that he's still not over 2007
Or it could be just anger??? You literally see people like ocon, perez, gasly calling drivers idiots
@@jjc1752 It wasn't just anger. Alonso is a bitter 41 year old grown man who acts like he's still in highschool.

To me the incident really showed Lewis is lacking object permanence.
40:30 Lando got a midfield podium and the only midfield podium in Imola where Sainz got yeeted by Danny Ric and Charles binned it into the wall at the end (they were also faster than Mercedes that weekend)
I've always considered visor tear-offs a risk, it's surprising to me that it's not more common a problem.
The whole field basic used a tearoff at once due to the fluids that came from hamiltons car
@@Querientje Definitely, the Alonso cam caught that well enough.
It is and it's caused quite a few problems (George last year comes to mind). It's just not been so obviously caused the problem between the 2 championship leaders. There's even a rule in the regs that say drivers are supposed to keep the tear offs in the car and not let them fly away.
@@roxannelyson7715 it was strolls tearoff who hit leclerc
Hamilton should have gotten a penalty. Not a grid drop or anything, maybe a 10 second penalty which would have been meaningless, but not giving him a penalty because he was out anyways shows penalty points are meaningless and they gave em to Max like candy last year.
Hey, Matt. Can you explain the helmet with tear off is important in f1 racetrack?
Matt is heartbroken over his team / favourite driver... and Katie keeps ripping his heart out of his chest setting it on fire and dancing on top of it :O:O
"Yeah they do because everyone's Infront of them"
Absolutely savage
What bit of Alonso radio are they talking about @30:45 ?
Alonso punts Hamilton, Hamilton shoots oil all over, Verstappen rips off visor from oil, Leclerc catches visor in wheel, Visor fire damages speed Leclerc sensor, Leclerc speeds in pitlane, 5 sec penalty giving Alonso 5th. All according to el plan

Yep. He's a Leclerc fan. He doesn't care what Sainz does, if Leclerc doesn't win that means Ferrari has been poor.
"MY word you can just fly by on the Kemmel straight."

Serious Jim Clark vibes from max at spa
Regarding Tsunoda, he got both a 10 second pit stop and a 4 second pit stop so a c feels a bit unfair.
Yeah superficial youtube channel who have no idea what i actually going on but certainly act like it
That was a compelling camera shot of Sir Lewis making the long walk back to the paddock.
I was looking forward to this!!! :D
I like this more Sassy irritated postcast with the sarcastic snarky humor. can you guys keep doing this?
Tear-offs:
49:30
ISC Appendix L, Chap III 1.3:
"Drivers of open cockpit cars and drivers participating in the WEC Championship must wear full-face helmets, of which the chin bar is an integral part of the helmet structure and is tested to an FIA approved standard. This measure is recommended for historic open cockpit cars and Autocross SuperBuggy, Buggy1600 and Junior Buggy. Any tear-offs attached to visors may not be thrown unnecessarily onto the track or the pit lane."
If the FIA wants to actually enforce silly rules, make it this one.
Can you go to Locals or Rumble Toronto?
At the end of September or earlier Red Bull can already focus on 2023 as well! : ))
Meanwhile, they announced that Spa will remain in the calendar, which
is of course great, but that means that there will be no race in South
Africa. The reason behind it: They still want to bleed organizers
with 30 million dollars fees, but in South Africa they can't charge
thousands of dollars for a ticket like in Vegas.
In fact, if you noticed, the F1 management and drivers are not blabbering any more about equality, rights, etc.
They shifted the conversation on women in F1.
It's amazing how often you hear the phrase 'rare mistake from Hamilton'.
Sainz didn't improve his quali time with the tow, it was the previous lap that got him the good time
@@aimankamil4818 Completely true. BUT my point was that RB didn't even bother with a tow for Checo. It's just odd for RB to not do it.
@@Warhaawk yeah idk max had like weird 3 run 3 quali, I guess they really want to save his engine and tyre
Solves porpoising, dark art of flexifloors and smaller front wings would encourage mixing it.
ride height had to be raised due to the compression from driving through eau rouge
Person to Katy: Ma'am do you have any last words?
Katy: Just repeating what these guys have said...
Ferrari didn't have the fastest car earlier in the season, it was dependent on the track and if they got the setup right, either Ferrari or Red Bull.
two words: long runs.
he only did one run in each qualifying round btw, q1 q2 q3
This is the most deflated wtf1 podcast I’ve ever seen. Tommy looks like he wants to explode with excitement but is too reserved to let it out. Lol. Come on Tommy! Let it all out. Let’s go. Haha

The bookies knew it. We all knew it. Max is inevitable.
hamilton did a verstapen move. when you move your opponent out of the way or they give you the position. last year max style of overtaking.
Depressing times if you're not a Red Bull fan. Bring on *2026*
Max also gave away 1.3 seconds on his drift/burnout as well.
"Le Clerc wins a free Verstappen tear-off"! PRICELESS!!!
A drink company winning AGAIN against huge car manufacturers is so funny 💀
Max was really dominant for 1 race and the Merc fans have lost their sh*ts 😭 I mean did they forgot their 7 year dominance?

Thank you Katie it took 6 mins for someone to mention Brazil 21
I thought Ferrari had it in the bag this season, because that car was so fast it was visibly noticeable. Ferrari pit wall killed their chances this year. McLaren gave their drivers a four wheeled brick for this season. Even when El Plan doesn't work, it works. I love Alonso.
I feel like Hamilton's Drive in Brazil last year is comparable to Max's drive this weekend. Not the biggest Hamilton fan but you have to respect that.
Lewis’ performance is far more impressive
Closing the field requires a few more years of budget cap and stable regulations. The level of the team's operations are very different, as RBR vs Ferrari shows us.
So exited to see this
Matt's face at 9:14 says it all really. XD
Ferrari will be good at Zandvoort and Red Bull will be driving in circles around them at Monza and win.
