Good point by Tommy re: on how Valteri can be viewed as conspiring to help Merc come back to the 2021 championship by taking out both red bulls at '21 Hungary GP. Especially after Lewis took out Max at Silverstone a week before AND Toto dropping a comment saying "We are 2 DNFs away from being in contention again". Conspiracy theorist could have read so much into that
It's not really weird what happened with Yuki, he noticed the issue after he installed the tires, they didn't see the data on their end so told him to come back to pit and it's common sense to try another set of tires since he only felt the issue after the initial tire change. When he excited the pit he noticed the issue still there so now they know for sure it's not the tires and probably something else so they tell him abort. Very logical and you are this happens a lot when a driver exits the pit and feels something not right, if they don't see the data then the first thing to try is to replace the tires that they just installed. Quite normal
Why could they not see the problem in the data sooner? If your driver reports a problem, obviously you look at what he thinks it is first. But if that's not it, and they knew that before ordering him back to the pits, they should have continued to look before ordering him to return. Just cause it's not what your driver thinks it is, doesn't mean him feeling a problem is not accurate. They risked damage to components and an unsafe situation on track causing yellow flags by continuing before finding out what the real problem was. Schoolboy error, imo.
I just think they shouldn’t have sent him back out, he was 3 laps behind at that point, had a 2 hour pit stop to fix his seatbelts and had no hope in making any time back up in the race
@@josephward6021 yeah I agree but it's not that uncommon to see a team try to get the car out even when a lap behind. I think it has to do with collecting data in general about the car and responsibility to the sponsors on the car so people can see the ads on the car
@@josephward6021 even then every lap is data. they now have a free time to work on car settings and the driver gets to try new things. So nothing is wasted.

Having just now watched the Dutch GP because i was too busy this weekend, i do like the new graphic when you're onboard with a driver and whe it shows the gap and distance to driver in front like we've seen with Hamilton and Sainz at the start.
i don't get it, i feel like it is just something to add, rather than something with a purpose. Distance i don't think really matters, as it's constantly fluctuating. the time gap is nice, but that's already at the bottom of the screen generally. Isn't fewer distracting things on screen better?
Max needs 4 more wins out of a total 7 possible to break that record...I don't think he'll beat Seb's nine in a row since e.g. Singapore could be trickier but who knows, that 13 win record is definitely within reach though
I think that unless anything drastic happens (reliability, crashes, covid), he can win every remaining race. The only hard one could be Singapore because RB's aero efficiency won't matter too much but Zandvoort is quite similar and he relatively easily won that one.
I think he will he has the same situation as Vettel a close start of the season fight looks decided by the winter break. Ferrari will invest into next year. Merc will probably have a completely new concept to build around. The only person to challange him isnt mentally there (see his radios in Dutch GP he is losing a lot of composure same as mclaren times) and Max has a car that is really hard to overtake. So Singapore will be tricky but then again its all about strategy and RB will be to ashamed to let perez stay out back others up and Max to get the win
Sainz had damage btw, from the first lap contact with Lewis and George did not screw Merc's chance for a win. that was already gone with the VSC and the SC, and from then on understandably he was looking out for himself. George asked the team about changing to the softs the moment the SC was deployed. he realized that they were going to be sitting ducks to Max and Charles. he just read the race situation well and his call deserves praise. Lewis isn't in the title fight, his teammate shouldn't be expected to ruin his own race just so they can gamble for a Lewis win. and as we saw staying on the mediums wasn't the right decision anyway, had they both stayed out they're 3rd and 4th
Christian said that even without the SC, they had Max winning by something like 15 seconds. He was probably just taking the piss with the 15 seconds, but Max would have won the race either way. I don't see how any Merc/Lewis fan could say that they could have won that race.
@@7BD273 He only passed Lewis because of tires they were both on. He didn’t get past Russell on softs as it was and I’d argue that Lewis is faster than George in the same machinery, so put Lewis on soft tires and it’s highly unlikely Leclerc is getting past the Mercs.
5:55 didn't Bottas binned two Red Bulls in Hungary last year? Didn't again Bottas and Russel - two Mercedes drivers crashed just as Hamilton went off last year? The conspiracy for Yuki makes no sence now but if they want some conspiracy then sure, Mercedes last year was much more sus
YEAH Mercedes EXPESIALY hAMILTON GOT MANY CHANGE AND POINT BY THE TEAM ORDER TO MAKE BOTTAS AND RUSSEL HIT WALL TO MAKE HAMILTON WIN RACE GP , THIS WAS THE FACT AND REAL CONSPIRACY AND NO BLOW OUT TILL NOW BY FIA WTF THE FXK ITS THAT
What about Toto remarking for the UK GP that Hamilton is only one DNF away from Max in points (paraphrasing) And then in the first lap they shunt Max into the barrier
I think you should listen to the pit radio's of Max, George, Hamilton, during that entire safety car situation, pretty interesting differences. George did not call for them last second, well he did, but that wasn't the first time he asked for them. He was basically asking for them from second one of the SC, he repeated that two times (I think) before calling out his yellows where shot and needed the red as they drove in to the pit.
I watched George’s onboard as well and he’s talking about putting the softs on as soon as they tell him the safety car is out. Hamilton asks about changing tires but he sort of drops it where George kept bringing it up again until finally when they’re about to go through the pit lane and he basically tells them to change his tires.
32:00 That's a good point. If I made an amateurish mistake at work which caused the entire product to miss the targeted goal, week after week after week, I'd be let go so fast just to stop me from messing up any more weeks to come. I really do wonder why this hasn't happened at Ferrari after so many mistakes only amateurs make. It makes no sense to me.
At this point, I think actual amateurs would be better running Ferrari right now. Binotto can go back to being the chief technical director, but bring in some amateur to run the pit wall. Hell...I would do it for far less than they are paying their idiots now.
On a complete tangent - Matt, Katy, and Tom remind me of the Harry Potter trio! Great discussions guys - started watching recently and I enjoy them a lot!
29:11 Indeed, yes Katy! I’m a RB fan and I found myself shouting “Noooo!” to the Ferrari pit crew for binning Sainz’s race. Sure I’m rooting for another driver, but not like this.
I was watching with my friend and he had just stood up and went to the fridge. I just shouted "ferrari again" and he genuinely said "what now have they forgot tyers".
It's fun when your driver wins because they are better than their opponents, not as much when they win because their opponent can't pit properly or any of the other things Ferrari have been up to.
Please remember how RedBull only became a winning team after Seb won in 2008 in Monza, and Toro Rosso ended the championship ahead of RBR. Max and Ricciardo also came from Toro Rosso, so great ROI so far. Great video, thank you so much for the thorough analysis.

We know the punishment/penalty for race fixing. Why Red Bull would risk that is beyond me. Toto throwing fuel into the fire is just pathetic. From tossing his factory under the bus live on air to suddenly expecting to beat Red Bull on pure pace.
Plus, Tommy said that Russell has the 3rd best car and is technically in 3rd place in the championship. But he actually has the 5th or 6th best car. He's been spectacular.
Do you guys know that the second flare on track was actually not thrown by a fan? It was a security guard that took it from a fan and threw it over the fence I guess to get rid of it? The guy filming is saying 'What an asshole'.
I thought to myself after Abu Dhabi, that for as controversial as it ended up being that Latifi crashed, there would have been a full blown, tin foil fest if it had been one of about 10 other drivers. For example: - Either Alpha Tauri or Perez = obviously team play. - Mick = didn’t want his dad’s record broken. -Seb = didn’t want his idols record broken. - Fernando = hates Lewis - Bottas = a middle finger to Merc on the way out. - Russell = starting the mindgames with his soon to be team mate. - Carlos/Danny= protection an old team who they want to see win. I swear. People find conspiracy everywhere.
I don't think people understand that DTS is not F1. They think everything is dramatic in F1 when mostly F1 races are pretty boring. They want everything to be Silverstone or a Monza...and if its not they pick out little things as if it was an episode. That's not how this sport works.
47:47 this is why I believe that of the other podium finishers, Russell is the most deserving of a win this season. He makes no mistakes and delivers every time.
Let’s just clear the air while we are at it: Toto knew full well what he was doing when he made the Yuki comment during the post-race interview. Politicking and jostling for desirable media coverage is one thing. Perpetuating damaging conspiracy theory is another, and we should call Toto out for his bullshit.
For the pit lane, they could remove the pit wall and then have the lane being wider by that, and then ofc having to build a pitwall room above the garage, like monaco.
I think Ricardo would match really well with Indycar, it has a much more layback vibe and he loves the whole US culture. As I believe he actually resides in the US at least partially.
To be fair to the pit crew, they were late getting ready because Sainz was called in at the last second. They never should have called him in that late and I have no idea what they were thinking.
The guy with the tire was there. The car just came in to the box to fast for him to get into position and because those boxes are so tight he had to awkwardly run around the hole team. The whole thing was a strategy problem and had nothing to do with the pitcrew.
I could be wrong, as I’ve not really cared enough to watch it closely, but why did 3 of 4 guys have their tires where they needed to be, yet 1 guy didn’t? And when is the last time you’ve seen ANY team trot out 3 tires when they called them in quickly? You kinda sound like a certain team principle. Do you think they just “didn’t have the pace” as well? Edit: I think the 4th tire carrier just didn’t have the pace.
@@philbear21 What the fuck you chatting? 🤣 Binotto literally said it after the race that they made the call on the last corner. You could still see them scrambling when he came in. This isn't complex

The hilarious part is Bottas’ SC is where Merc really stepped on themselves. But that doesn’t feed into Cult44’s mental breakdown. Watching the insufferable suffer is fun.
F1 should do what they do at the Singapore Grand Prix. Been in it for many years, and they've got excellent security with them taking away anything that even resembles something that can meddle with security. I've been to 2 other ones (Abu Dhabi & Hungary), and they're certainly more lean with security checks. They definitely should up their levels of security Edit: After listening until the end, do the other F1 grand prix's not even have BAGGAGE CHECKS!? That's wild, they definitely need to upgrade it
Plot twist: the second flare thrown on the track during qualifying (the one that only resulted in a yellow flag) was actually thrown there BY A SECURITY GUARD!!! It is unclear why. Maybe he found it in a dangerous place or seized it from someone, but he threw it over the fence and it rolled to the track side.
It's off topic but one thing that caught my eye was Mclaren on the straight. I watched Lando with drs open and overtake held down, barely catching Alonso. That's so insane that the car is that slow. It would be interesting to see the numbers on how many cars Mclaren have passed on the straights where the passed car didn't just let them by. I bet it's not many. Lack of straight line speed has to be one of the most frustrating things.
@@CihanDrwr that is pretty much what the data says. That and the car doesn't fit Ricciardo at all. Some analysts imply his driving style doesn't gel with ground effect cars, I sure hope that isn't the case.

On the one hand, I’d like Hamilton to keep his win a year record - on the other hand, the more wins Verstappen gets the more he could break the in one reason and in a row records
As a Verstappen fan, I’d rather have Lewis keep his record alive. There’s always next year and Lewis certainly deserves it, he still is one of the most insanely talented and gifted drivers on the track.
@@Roman500 in what way he deserves it? Because he had the best car for 10 years? Because he’s driving Mercedes? Because he’s black? Because he’s a BLM supporter? Because he has some idiot keeper as a fan in the Netherlands who has nr 44? Just tell me why does he deserves it?
Am I wrong in thinking had Merc gone with a 2 stop they would have looked massively off pace and Ferrari would have had 2nd in the bag and how did the VSC benefit Red Bull when both mercs were able to pit for mediums and Max had hards?
Merc had committed to one stop and it worked for them and if you remember when leclerc made his second stop Lewis was two seconds behind which meant leclerc practically had make up a pit stop of time to catch up to Lewis and also Vsc insured unlike a safety car that max could keep his 12 second lead at the time and have a free stop.
dont think so. Mercedes was driving fastest laps with the hards while ferrari was on mediums. and the vsc helped max a bit because he would have been ten seconds behind Lewis if there was no vsc or sc. With the VSc he was infront on new hards and hamilton was 12 seconds behind with new mediums. and with the straightline speed mercedes would not have overtaken him even with DRS. not saying mercedes would have won, but it did benefit max slightly because he had a free pitstop
Matt - "Ferrari are more worried about this fire than that fire" Meanwhile, the Ferrari truck carrying the PU's from Zandvoort to Monza is surrounded by fire engines cause the trucks brakes caught fire 😅😅😅
32:40 - 35:12 - Tom and Matt are spot on regarding that one. Binotto Pinocchio sad after Hungary's GP that they didn't have the pace anyway. Not true at all: Leclerc was flying on 'mediums' before Ferarri destroyed his race giving him the 'hards' ; ). Not taking ownership of their mistakes and no win mentality from a team principal will never win championships.
Soon as RB turned their engine mode up it made Mercedes look like last years Williams. Because even Williams this year as better straight line speed than Mercedes!
Well, to be fair a more draggy car has benefitted Merc ever since say 2017 (I think?), so I don't blame them for wanting to stick with that philosophy. Issue is, now they cannot compensate for that drag by having the best engine anymore. They aren't far off the rest, but just enough so that it won't compensate.
You should go to Monza someday, Matt! I was there in 2013 and it was quite a thrilling race, with the Ferraris finishing P2 and P4, battling it out with the Red Bulls. Let's hope for a similar result this weekend - although you never know with this year Ferrari's strategists ...
I've been saying this for months now about Ferrari, there's literally no grit or mudslinging going on at Ferrari's pit wall. They're all literally willing to bend over and give up when the option presents itself. As a Ferrari fan myself I wish we had a boss like Christian Horner that's got that competitive edge and attitude that will have their rivals shaking or just highly overwhelmed
Agreed. Toto and Horner have winning mentalities for sure. How often have you seen them lose a sure race win and be all smiles and "Oh we did good. It's all good". Ferrari needs a true leader. Otherwise this whole regulation change till 26 is not gonna net them any trophies.
I think Binotto needs to go back to being the chief technical director, and bring in someone, ANYONE who will push for accountability on the pit wall. The whole strategy department needs fired. Break every one of the computers they are using, and just be strategists. Their computers are definitely a huge problem this year. They rely on them far too much. Any time a situation pops up, they can't jump into action, and think on their feet. My 10 year old son has called out their stupid strategy many times. It's so bad that he has jumped ship years ago. He is now a RB/Max fan, and I'm still stuck being a Ferrari fan since 1982. This is killing me inside.
The issue of the flares in Zandvoort was that flares had been dropped into the dunes a few days before the weekend. So the security were searching people for flares but couldn't find them, because they had dropped or buried them in the dunes. The security just couldn't stop it from happening unfortunately.
I don't think it's possible to "loosen the belt" while it's fastened. The 5 or 6 point harness connect to one fast release buckle so the driver can quickly get out. Maybe we released the buckle and in order to put the belt back in, he would've had to loosen it, and definitely wouldn't have been able to tighten it again due to the tight cockpit
Oh yeah that might be a possible, I thought it's just what they said in order to avoid a penalty for Tsunoda for driving around without a seat belt. (Because I'm pretty sure he would just undo his belt if he wanted out, not loosen it for some reason)
Could also just be semantics. I mean unhooking it is technically loosening it, right? Idk, either way, I wouldn’t want to drive around any track, especially that one, with a loose or unfastened belt with all the blind corners.
Binotto needs to focus on the engineering aspect of the team (lead engineer or something like that) and they need to get a team principal like Horner or Wolff. Those two are by far the best team principals in F1. If they can find someone who is simolar to them, they're gonna be on the right track again.
If you watch the Sainz pitstop replay, for some inexplicable reason the left rear was at the front right position and the guy had to go all the way around to get to the left rear with the tire.
Sorry I work in IT and I just can't not correct Matt on the advertisement for ExpressVPN - if you're from the UK the correct pronunciation of router is 'Roo-ter' & also you don't have a router at home, that's a 'hub' that connects you to the router somewhere along the street you live on. Love your F1 content though! 😝
I never understood this conspiracy either. Why would RB take such a risk when they are 98 points ahead? That would be dumb! You could clearly see Yuki had issues with the car... And all those people who are hating on Hannah Schmitz??? She did such a good job and is an example of what great things women can achieve in F1! She is awesome!
Toto's nonsense is responsible for the Yuki conspiracy and the death threats to Hannah and Alpha tauri. Also his beheviour at the Abu Dhabi gp is the reason why Latifi did get death threaths. Not directly but sure indirectly. Toto's behaviour is ruining the sport we all love. Toto's hate campaign towards Max and Red Bull last year has polarised the sport and fans, especially Max and Lewis fans😥 It's about time that Toto is getting corrected and suspend him from formula 1 for a while, or for ever!
I agree with Sainz on the unsafe release. There was a McLaren mechanic in his line when he was released. He was out of the way at the time Sainz was able to fully brake but he was damn near in the fast lane and I don't think he saw the Alpine coming down the pit lane.
Redesigning the pitlane will probably be dependant on wether FIA will take the 2 year optional contract extension for Zandvoort. Otherwise next year will be the last race. In that case I wouldn't count on a braider pitlane
Until Max either retires or falls off competitively, Zandvoort will be on the schedule imo. His home race, and it sells out a year in advance. Also a nice old track with some features you don’t get at most tracks like the banking. As long as they keep Spa, I can’t believe it was ever considered for deletion from the schedule.
I watched back Sainz's pit stop and the pit crew just weren't ready for him. the guys on the guns were in place but the tire guys were still running into place while Sainz was stopped. the guy on the rear left tire started to go around the front left of the car then turned around and went all the way around the right of the car to the rear left. i cant understand why they weren't ready it was a scheduled pit stop, only thing i can think of is that they had the wrong tires then had to swap.
Late to the podcast party here.. I've already said a couple times now on the comments here I'm suspicious of the incident and tbh I really don't think rb would risk a championship like this.. however it all added up perfectly and yeah matts right abu dhabi has left such a sour taste in my mouth of the sport its going to take me a while to trust in teams and the fia again. I'm not just a bitter Lewis fan before someone wants to jump on that idea.. if it was Lewis winning in that way I'd be as equally angry as it was simply poor management that ruined a relatively decent title fight.

Exactly! And even though Horner was angry about it, he didn't say that this was on purpose. Sadly Toto doesn't remember apparantly and is even fueling the conspiracy theorists now

There needs to be an A, B, C, D, F1 for teams too, not just drivers!
Tbh, I wonder how that would have gone lol!
So nothing is wasted.

i don't get it, i feel like it is just something to add, rather than something with a purpose. Distance i don't think really matters, as it's constantly fluctuating. the time gap is nice, but that's already at the bottom of the screen generally.

Agree 100%
Let’s take one at the time.
13 win is within reach. Thats just 2 more wins to tie, 3 to break.
Sainz had damage btw, from the first lap contact with Lewis
and George did not screw Merc's chance for a win. that was already gone with the VSC and the SC, and from then on understandably he was looking out for himself.
A Mercedes’ victory was never there mate. Max on fresher tires would have easily cleared the 5+- seconds after he would have done his second pitstop
Christian said that even without the SC, they had Max winning by something like 15 seconds. He was probably just taking the piss with the 15 seconds, but Max would have won the race either way. I don't see how any Merc/Lewis fan could say that they could have won that race.
2nd and 3rd imo, but yeah totally agree otherwise.

Williams could honestly park Latifi, run only one car with Albon and still come out ahead of letting him keep running.
when the space on the track is worth more than a teammate
I think you should listen to the pit radio's of Max, George, Hamilton, during that entire safety car situation, pretty interesting differences. George did not call for them last second, well he did, but that wasn't the first time he asked for them. He was basically asking for them from second one of the SC, he repeated that two times (I think) before calling out his yellows where shot and needed the red as they drove in to the pit.
And it turned out he was absolutely right.

Yeah, I just shook my head, knowing something had to happen, just a matter of when and what.
It's fun when your driver wins because they are better than their opponents, not as much when they win because their opponent can't pit properly or any of the other things Ferrari have been up to.

Was at the track Saturday. Backpacks were barely checked. Asking for problems.
Lewis said he did that after winning at Malaysia to lean out of the cockpit to celebrate his win whilst driving by lossening the belt straps
Agree 100%. Binotto is good at the tech stuff and should stick to that. They need someone else as principal.

I agree with Sainz on the unsafe release. There was a McLaren mechanic in his line when he was released. He was out of the way at the time Sainz was able to fully brake but he was damn near in the fast lane and I don't think he saw the Alpine coming down the pit lane.
just a theory but maybe Ferrari’s problem is that they keep hiring the best Italian team manager instead of hiring the best team manager

I strongly believe he thought he was just gonna walk into a Merc or Ferrari seat after RB, and when that didn't happen he didn't want to eat his pride and go back to RB so he thought oh I'll go somewhere else for a year and then I'll go to Merc or Ferrari. Problem is he assumed he was just going to walk into another team and be just as good as he was in the RB. That never happened, his stock fell Merc and Ferrari went in different directions and then he jumped ship to McLaren cause he didn't want to be at Renault in the first place. The rest is history.
He made a mistake jumping ship from Renault. He had everything he wanted there. Clear #1 status, a HUGE paycheck, a team 100% behind him, and they were on the upswing. Should have stayed.
@@Spike-sk7qlI think he should have never left RB, but ya once he jumped to Renault he should have stayed. He made his bed tho, now he has to lay in it.
@@Shogun519 I don't know. It seemed pretty clear Danny was no longer going to be the number 1 at red bull, and in quick fashion too. I think it was right for him to leave but I'm not sure he handled the rest of it as well as he could have.
@@jonotto1997in my opinion I think if he really wanted to prove he was a number one to merc or Ferrari or whoever he should have stayed and fought max but maybe you're right he was never going to be fast than Max , Max is a generational talent, maybe even better than that, time will tell, but either way he took the RB for granted when he left and thought he would be just as good immediately somewhere else
Hearing these anti Max Verstappen people suffer is simply lovely. Keep em going :)
Its getting worse every weekend now😂 i love it!
I think Binotto has a point
Improving your pitstop dynamic is easier than making an F1 car faster
Pls, add markers. It would help a lot.
It was RB, they just hanged a carrot in front of Lewis, just for the fun of it, and then when he thinks he can win they pull it away, just to annoy him. 😂🤔😂
Wtf1 don’t seem to realise Sainz had Venturi damage from his first lap incident on top of the team’s mess up.
That intro is epic
for the security thing, in canada there were metal detectors and bag checks!
Don't forget Zandvoort has hosted a lot of F1 races. It's tight yes but that it has it's own charm.
There's a video on Twitter that shows one of the flares was thrown by a security guy onto the track.
If you watch the pit stop video in 0.5x you actually see what happened. The tyre guy was there but got stuck as Sainz came in and panicked about not reaching his position.
Thinking Tsunoda and Alpha Tauri did all that just to help Max is like thinking Russell crashed into Bottas at Imola 2021 just so Lewis couldn't get lapped and let him have another chance in the race. Folks you watch to much DTS and think everything that happens on track is just planned and must be sketchy.
DTS got me into the sport, then I quit watching the show just because the storylines are so outrageously blown up lol. I watched a little racing over the years but just seeing the drivers and their personalities made me want to watch more. After that, I didn’t care too much for the show, but I watch every session on race week since the start of last season.
COTA does bag checks for smaller events
If Merc get a win, I won’t be surprised, but I won’t be surprised if they don’t get one either. They seem to have caught Ferrari over a whole weekend (slower in qualy but quicker in the race) but Red Bull appear to have out-developed both of them.
All bags were checked Katy, and you can't give everyone an airport like scan and patdown, it will cause massive lines
In fairness Yuki could've limp back to the pit, like the first time.
Hope that they replace Zandvoort with another track, like Portimão.
This race wasn't that great and Portimão gave us some wheel-to-wheel racing even with the previous cars.
