Never Do THIS During BJJ Training In The Gym

  • It's really important to remember the delicate balance of emotions that exist on the mats during BJJ training. Especially after a Submission or successful technique is executed.
    For every successful BJJ technique or submission you execute during Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training in the gym. It's only possible because of the failure or mistake of your training partners.
    Now, it's not a terrible thing to make a mistake in Brazilian Jiujitsu. But ultimately, anytime we make a mistake. It doesn't feel particularly good.
    Just think of a situation when your were training and you failed. Again, it's a great learning experience, but it doesn't feel awesome.
    So when you're training at your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym. Never make the mistake of being boastful about your wins during training. This is especially important to remember as a new BJJ White Belt when scoring a submission for the 1st time is super exciting.
    So I hope this video is helpful with your BJJ training!

    At our gym it is common to only bump fists and continue rolling after a sub.

      Interesting. I wish this was the case in fencing. In competition and even a bit during practice, fencers are very prideful and always scream and cheer, even if they are the ones who mess up.

    I have the opposite view. It's kind of flattering if someone celebrates, not the way "Jesse" did of course but more like a "FINALLY", because it implies you're tough to submit and they really had to work at it to get it, rather than it being a piece of cake.

    I dont really get it. I laugh when I get my ass kicked. Jujitsu is fun, win or loose. Every failure I learn something new, every failure is a step forward. I don't celebrate in general because I have a very reserved demeanor. But if my partner got his/her first Kimura on me I would celebrate with them.

      I'd say its more like celebrating a team mates success. If someones stuck up on their failure, we as team mates should respect that and try and bring eachother up, but at the same time we should be appreciating success and progress, even if its not our own. Though if you're rubbing it in and being a douche, you're probably not gonna be very popular.

      i agree with you but not every see things in the same light you do. as a white belt i never once got frustrated when losing or getting stuck or positions or w\e. im there to have a good time and learn. being frustrated or mad makes everything more complicated

    • @MacMac0710
      @MacMac0710 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I agree. There are different types of celebration. Introspective satisfaction in yourself doing something well vs you celebrating beating someone else. An opponent celebrating a submission against me is almost a compliment to how difficult they thinks it is to get that submission.
      If a black belt celebrated every time they tapped out a white belt that would be different as there wouldn't really be any personal accomplishment to celebrate.

    To everybody hating on Jesse or sharing stories of times you had to “punish” white belts for celebrating, why? A white belt is just that, a white belt, they normally don’t know any better and let’s be honest, were you yourself not excited the first time you got a submission on either another white belt or on a senior belt? I understand why it’s not cool to openly celebrate but at the very least a “good job” is in order as the person is finally progressing in BJJ. Upper belts who physically punish white belts are the reason so many white belts never come back. We are all here to learn and have fun. Leave your ego at the door.

      Ya they dont know any better, the first time I went to train bjj in Orlando I was tapping white belts like crazy, as a white belt, and did not celebrate I was very respectful, then i went agianst a purple belt, i believe the intention was too "humble" me. Of course i got tapped about 3 or 4 times in 5 minutes. Just kinda rubbed me the wrong way cause I got the feeling I was ruffling feathers u know? In the end everyone was cool and too be honest the guy probably could have tapped me more. 8 years later i myself am i purple belt. And bjj has changed my life. I have no idea what my point is I'm just rambling had about 3 cups of coffee 😂🤣

      I don't get to train with genuine whitebelts, my instructor is black belt and the other guy has a 3 decade history in martial arts in general. My instructor allowed me a guillotine but was trying to make me finish it properly in order to get the tap. So maybe I didn't get the position without a little spoon-feeding but it was my first submission and I was still proud of it, joked with him a little like I was a pro (we know each other pretty well so he knew it was all sarcasm) Truth be told maybe it's my older age (whopping 32) but walking in to BJJ a few months ago I just never expected to get a sub until later on in my training experience. So I guess I had already submitted to being submitted (I'm done now)

    I'm an old white belt. I tapped a blue belt and DIDN'T gloat about it. He completely freaked out after that and was crazy aggressive to the point of being unsafe. Luckily the class ended shortly thereafter. Now I avoid the guy. I had the thought afterward, "man, even if I see the submission, maybe it's not worth tapping a higher belt...just flow maybe instead so as not to ruffle feathers." As I'm older I can get injured easier and I like rolling. I don't need a 19 year-old freaking out and ripping my shoulder out of joint. what do you think Chewie?

    • @r.b.4611

      I'm a new blue belt and I get tapped occasionally by white belts, two of whom were just promoted yesterday to blue belt. There is really not much difference between a blue belt and good white belt, esp one with multiple stripes. To be honest I did have to reflect on this point a bit after I was first tapped.

    • @kylesalisbury4886
      @kylesalisbury4886 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I'm a 2 stripe blue belt and occasionally I'll get tapped by white belts, but I'm usually only going 75%, so when they tap me, I just turn up the intensity a little bit. I'm usually pretty laid back.

    • @Nameisworkinprogress11
      @Nameisworkinprogress11 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      i noticed that all the way up untill purple, people have huge egos. white belts always get tapped, so you have to be careful with them, and blue belts have some sort of superiority complex alot of the time, but when people get to purple, they have nothing to prove, so they just try to be helpful. thats my expierience. A lot of it has to do with age. blue belts are often younger, and have high egos because of it.

    😂 it’s so funny because I got my first sub a couple weeks ago. I’ve been in for a couple of months. I came home and told my wife about how you act like it’s no big deal on the outside, but feel totally pumped on the inside. She asked why. I said because it sucks to be submitted.

    I don't do jiujitsu so I'm not familiar with the atmosphere over there, but in my discipline we celebrate each other's success, like when they pull off a beautifully excecuted technique or something. We talk about how nice it was to see skill being shown and compliments each other after bouts. Having a point scored on me, especially by a progressing new comer or if it was a beautiful exchange, makes me as happy as my opponent and I think it applies to others in my sport too. I think that is a part of "leaving your ego", which you say frequently and I agree with immensly too.

  • @danielskrivan6921
    @danielskrivan6921 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I take TKD and HKD, and if I cross-trained in BJJ, this would be the hardest part for me. We train with each other every day, and we know when we're struggling with something. Whenever someone finally beats an opponent that's taken them down the last 8 matches, or whenever someone finally lands a kick that they've never landed before, they always celebrate, and we celebrate with them. We know it's not about "you messed up", it's that sigh of relief that it finally worked.
    (If someone does it in the "I'm the greatest" type of attitude, they are quickly humbled).

    Man that's bullshit. Let the guy celebrate a big achievement in his journey, then have him get back down and roll again. You shouldn't celebrate like "I'm so great and you suck" but I think celebrations like "I finally got a submission!!" are great. Good for him!
    He wasn't rubbing it in the other guy's face he was enjoying his own success. That higher belt needs to show the maturity higher belts are *meant* to have. I got triangled the other day and tapped out, no fucking big deal and if my training partner was happy that he triangled me, good for him he should be happy! That's the great thing about training jiu jitsu, you can tap out an infinite amount of times and you never lose anything. But your opponent can gain some positive feelings.

    I have been guilty of this as an early white belt. I had to learn to remedy this, and now I think hard about any time I even talk about successes in rolling in case it could be taken as I am bragging. I've gotten into the habit of saying good job or good roll with my partner no matter who won or how. It's so hard to check the ego at the door, but Jiu Jitsu has taught me to do just that. And I wanna compete, but the problem is, I dont have that 'killer instinct' or that competitive edge that I always hear when it comes to fighting. I'm a white belt that has some experience training with some MMA guys that trained mostly on the ground. I started training with a BJJ gym and I could outdo most white belts and some blue belts. I rolled with a brown belt one day and caught him in a triangle. I didn't get up and celebrate but I know I looked a lil overly happy about it. My next roll was with my black belt instructor and he worked me over pretty hard. It humbled me and now I keep my feelings on the inside. Great vid.

      That book is freaking awesome.
      The white belt stuff, really formalizing what he calls the "survival positions" definitely changed the way I roll. I mean, I'd heard the stuff (at least to some degree) in training, but that just really drove the point home for me (I do tend to learn stuff better from reading than from hearing as well).
      And that basic scoop escape from back mount is cool as hell. Works like a charm.
      I don't know if my opinion matter that much (I'm a newbie), but for me what works best is not learning really new stuff from books and youtube, but instead to use it to review techniques I learn i class, and to get more of the details.
      I mean, a book or a youtube clip can spend whatever time they like demonstrating all the different aspects and details of a technique, whereas in class there is a limit to all that, so that you get time to actually practice the stuff.
      Sometimes I will use it to fill in holes I have in my game, that I discover when rolling (Using Stephan Kestings BJJ Roadmap, it like 30 pages and free to download, as a guide on what to focus on).

    why are higher belt grades so sensitive about this?
    for a white belt it's a huge achievement to get their first submission, it's like their first foothold in bjj.
    i guess celebrating after competition of bad too?

      If a white-belt gets a submission on a higher belt, in most cases it was only because the higher belt ALLOWED you to get it. Or you were LUCKY and caught him/her off-guard. If you then think that YOU did that all by yourself going "yeah, i just submitted that purple-belt, i should be brown.", do you think that guy
      will ever let you get stuff again? No, the purple belt will go hard on you to put you in your place.
      If you get a submission, you are by all means allowed to be happy and proud about it. You are learning and progressing. But celebrating is a just rude and immature.
      I remember my first armbar submission. It was at a normal sparring session and I finally understood what I had been doing wrong after several attempts against a blue-belt that wasn't giving me an easy time getting there. It was super hard to contain my excitement so I just straight up said: "Hey, I'm really sorry if I'm smug right now, but that was the first armbar someone tapped on." And she was super cool about it and just said something like "Yeah, I felt something going on. Good job!". And it was just bump and back at it. I think my coach saw me being smug because he went extra hard on me one round after that. But it was good to be a bit humiliated after that. Good contrast.
      In a competition however Celebration is naturally more accepted since you are both giving it your all. But one should still try to keep it in until after you get off the mat at least just out of respect. But that's just my opinion.

    Guess you're right, but you gotta understand us first timers - we are really proud of ourselves every time we get something more or less correct. The feeling of somehow being able to get to a more or less correct armbar is a great feeling of self improvement. Yes, tone us down a bit, remind us of humility, but don't make of it too big of a deal like we're about to yell "in yo face, LOOSER." Peace.

    Im only a few months into bjj and when I was a month in and hit a good move into a good submission I was happy, I didn't do anything crazy or really outwardly display it like Jesse, but I understand why he would do it. I have been training standup for a bit longer from karate to muay thai and when Im sparring with my partner or a new person and they land a good hit or combo on me, I am really happy for them. If a new person celebrates like he does with no spite or ego involved I definitely do not see a problem with it and I would even celebrate with them for a new person, it sucks to constantly get beat and once you see your hard work come out then it is really good to see.

    As a wrestler, 100% agree with this. Always he humble whether it be in practice or in competition. Everyone one matter the level is learning. Grappling is hard, you train for perfection but odds are no move will ever be perfect. Be happy you did well but keep training it because you got it on one person, you have to get it on person who doesn't train with you regularly and they may be able to stop you minimum make it more difficult.

    I recently got into jiu jitsu and came from a wrestling background, I didn't know I wasn't supposed to be getting submissions and our first free roll session I landed a couple nasty gator rolls, tapped a couple blue belts, outscored a purple belt (before he caught me in a triangle) but then we did some situational rolling and a white belt who I tapped a handful of times earlier that day was the first person to submit me, and he celebrated and people gave him some dirty looks and the coach talked to him, and I didn't understand why. All I thought was "damn that was sick, good job man." I didn't take it personally, but maybe that's bc I didn't have a stake, I knew I wasn't good at jiu jitsu. Or maybe it's bc I learned in wrestling that you have to leave your pride at the door when you walk into the gym. You're gonna get taken down by guys that aren't as good as you but that's how you learn.

    So if someone is serious about wanting to improve as much as possible in their training and was willing to make life hell for themselves could this be a potential path to greatness ? To drive one's opponents to a focused, maddened rage and determination to beat them ? Then if they still won, would it not be a greater victory ? Obviously there would be sacrifices in interpersonal relationships and training atmosphere so maybe not worth it.

    I just started Judo about 3 months ago and I just scored my first Ippon against my friend, who is also very new. I was happy I got it, but my first thought was "can I do it again" shortly followed by "hmm, maybe I should have raised my leg more..." It's a delicate thing, but I think once you realise your techniques still have a damn long way to go it makes you less happy about just scoring it the once.

  • @golddee2040

    Yeah, I had trying out something I had learned at a seminar during training. It was an escape/defense. I had my coach on my for that round and I survived using what I had been practicing for a month. So I was excited the technique worked and let out a 'whoop'. My coach was like, "Don't celebrate!" I had to quickly say, that I was happy at the progress of the defense and escapes and I was happy it was working. He was fine with it, but I certainly won't do that again.

    I'm only 1 min into the vid but I had to stop it to post this, if the instructor said you were out of line, then you were out of line in that school because the instructor sets the standard for their school and that is really the end of it. weather you train under any given instructor is up to you but how they run their school is up to them.

  • @danielcho3270

    I think I saw a vid the other day where the coach was explaining that when you get a sub while rolling, esp against a higher belt, remember that your opponent had to tap in order for you to get it and to look at his face before celebrating. Yes you should be happy but play it cool. I think you would garner a lot more street cred that way too.

    I can understand the excitement of a white belt doing this, since that is normally one of the biggest hurdles that is over come.
    Speaking for the experience I have gone through at my school, I was the only white belt for a few months, going against all blue and purple belts. When you finally submit one of them it feels good, and you want to celebrate. It shows that you are also improving. That being said, I am about to be promoted to a blue belt, and there are new white belts in the school, I don't celebrate against them, I remain humble, point out the opening that I was able to exploit, and how I was able to do what I did, even against blue and purple belts, I take the time to quick discuss how I was able to do that, and then we continue to roll.
    I don't think it is wrong of a white belt to enjoy their achievement, but you should remain humble while doing it.

    i am a 2nd degree black belt in judo, and we have a concept much like sparring wich is called "randori". It means something like practice fight in japaneese. The point i am heading to is, that the main thing about randori is to adept to my trainingspartner in such a way that we both are able to finish the fight. So i am getting tapped out (or pinned) a lot by lower belts just from resisting in a way that allows him to win but only if he does his techniques as good as he can. Long text, short question: Is this different in BJJ? I always have the feeling (from your videos alone) that everyone gives at least 90% and if you cant win you just gotta grind it out and live with loosing until you get better or someone worse joins the club.

    As a white belt, I've been getting on even levels when rolling with the purple belts. Two or three of them go hard and I end up sucking up on the bottom the whole time, BUT I just dont let them submit me and that's my whole purpose is to defend submission. These guys aren't very happy when they don't get the sub but it makes me a better defender and helps them by seeing their weaknesses.
