- A reveiw of the Jansport Odyssey backpack
Things I liked:
"Biovent" has great venting abilities
large size, yet doesn't look like a technical pack
zippered organizational pockets-most arent
hydration bladder compatable
hip strap can be tucked away
zippers have para cord, easy to open when it is cold/wearing gloves
colored inside of organization pocket
What I didn't like:
"Biovent is really hard on the back- not the most comfortable
price is a little high -$120
haul handle can be thicker/feel more strong
could add a laptop holder-big enough for a 17" , which arent that common

Dude, you were better description & walk through than the JANSPORT info video!
I didn't like it all that much but after YOUR explanation & tour, I like it.
Good job!
Ironically, February 2023; price is now only $100 for this pack.
Good review. I bought the JanSport Skirmisher 33 in late 2005 for $120. The Odyssey is the closest comparison in size. The few differences include: the smallest front pocket (and everything on the front it), the 4th compartment in from the straps, and most of the organization pockets in the 3rd compartment in don't come with the S-33; nor does the hard breathing foam, mine was design with non-breathing, extra-soft padding. It's also equipt with more comp and aux straps on the sides and bottom.
Thanks for the review...just bought this backpack yesterday. Got it at Marshall's for $40, after I left Dick's Sporting Goods where it was $109....shop around guys.
I have used this bag as my commuting bag for years. It is big for this purpose but it works. I also use it for short hiking trips. I think I paid 90 for it. Jansport guarantees their stuff forever so I am not worried about the wear around the top of the straps. The sternum strap broke. I bought it because of all the pockets but I think it is overkill. I need to remember where I put my gear and access it quickly. I am looking to downsize to a deuter act trail 24.
@ironjohn03 the part that you're probably most concerned about is the bottom nylon. I've had the backpack for over a year now there are no signs of fatigue. However, how long the backpack lasts also depends upon how YOU take care of it (i.e don't throw it around/drag it aroud etc.). Only major fatigue is where the shoulder pad connects to the actual pack, there 1 strand of the nylon broke right in front of my face.
Very Nice Review! Im 25 but used Jansport all through out my schooling days and I beat the piss out of them and they always held up. Still have my High scool pack which I think is awesome but the lower support straps have worn down which was due to my fault. I want to build a survival kit which I can keep in my car. I really like this pack but i wonder if they still build them as durable as they use too.
the holes, are for the hydration pack. oh, btw, i need to ask, since i'm gonna buy this bag mainly for school and I really fit ALOT of stuff inside it. about 4 inches of textbooks, 3 inches of long exercise books and another 2 inches of small exercise books(and maybe two changes of clothes). Do you think it will fit? the text books will mainly go in the biggest compartment.
@noobasurasrex
I checked this on the store and I think the nylon material is not that durable (too thin)... at least comparing them to the north face bags. Do you think it will last 5 years up? The display is already showing strands of nylon tearing off the lining which is a very big issue to me. So I'm really thinking this carefully before letting my $100+ go. Jansport vs. The North Face.
I wish the interior compartments were a light color, it does make a difference to find things easier specially in low light situations. That's one of my favorite features a pack can have
I've used my S-33 for offroad and downhill biking and currently as my b.o.b. How the shoulder straps attach and their thickness has always been my main concern. I have about 32.5 lbs of gear but I'm not sure how much weight is a safe load for the straps and/or their seams. Any ideas based on your experience with the Odyssey? I've always treated this bag well, so it's still in very good condition.
The holes in the top handle are used to route the hose from the hydration pack to one side or the other.
hmmm idk about the clothes but everything else will fit nicley. i use mine for school now and i carry two 2 and a 1/2 inch binders (one of them a zippered one, which are usually bigger), a 2 inch txt book, a lunch, and various writing utencils
Love the way this pack is divided & the pockets, VERY GOOD layout!!
But this is a good sized pack, so without a padded waist belt, it's a deal killer.
The back pad is also sloped away from actually adding support for your back. And the material used for the back & shoulder straps seems too hard, not comfortable.
Give this pack some better rigging & materials and it would be IDEAL!!
As it is...can't recommend.
How wide is the first pocket you showed (the that's what she said one)
Oh and also can it fit a 15.6 inch laptop
what model # is that? I just bought one and mine is different
@tmac2085 really? are u sure its the same?
@noobasurasrex yep...the exact same. I watched the entire review to make sure mine wasn't missing anything. I read someones review on amazon and they said the same thing...so I went and there it was.
didnt i show the gap in the backpack for that? There is a special hole just for your hose....lol
good job even flashlight so saw it all..
