The Bowler hats: The drummer is Jason Bonham, the son of LZ Late drummer John "Bonzo" Bonham who was known for wearing that style hat, so it was a tribute to him. When Bonzo passed, LZ didn't feel that he could be replaced and they ended the group. The lead singer, Robert Plant and Bonzo were very close friends and Robert was the godfather of Jason Bonham. Jason was wearing his fathers' Bowler hat and playing on his dad's drum kit, while the Choir also wore the hats in memory of Bonzo, that is one of the reasons why Robert was brought to tears.

Robert is Jason’s godfather, Robert & John were friends since about the age of 14, & played in at least 2 other bands together. I think Robert was thinking John should be there, watching his son play in a tribute to them. The best cover of this song ever.

They did such an awe-inspiring tribute to Led Zeppelin, it even brought them to tears. All the guys were there except John Bonham, the drummer, who passed away many years ago. As others have stated, Robert Plantvand John were best friends from their early teens, and Robert was Godfather to John's son, Jason. They had asked Jason to join them at the Kennedy Center since it was his father he would be there for, but Jason told them he was already committed to something else. Yeah, the shock on their faces to see that the "something else" was playing his father's drum set wearing his father's bowler hat and paying tribute to them, with Heart. John wore that hat when he played, so Jason wore John's hat, and the choir paid tribute to John by all of them wearing a bowler. The best tribute ever. The guys did look fragile, especially Robert. But nobody deserved that tribute and honors more than they did. I hope Heart gets a tribute, too, as they so deserve one. Thank you, Saeed, for watching them back to back. It put things in perspective in regard to age, time, and memories. Much love to you and your family ❤️ 🫂.

I grew up in this era, in a suburb of Seattle. Heart was our local band (I'm a year older than Ann). Imagine hearing them in 1967 (the year I graduated from high school). What I love about this tribute is the validation of what geniuses rock musicians really were, and the lasting legacy of this song that the original writers/performers get to witness. They are so valued during their lifetime. I also loved it that John Bonham's son was there to play drums and connect with his dad in that way. I always burst into tears watching this.

  • @LonghopeBro-ju6jl

Robert Plant has said that he hates it when people cover this song, because they always F it up. But he was obviously impressed with Heart's performance and told them so at the after-party. Also, Dave Grohl sat in for Jason Bonham for the rehearsal to keep his appearance a surprise. Plant wanted him to sit with them in the Honor Section, but he made up an excuse that he had other commitments.

This is one of the best tributes to Led Zeppelin with Ann & Nancy doing the classic song "Stairway To Heaven". No one else could have pulled it off as well. Guitar solo by Shane Fontayne, formerly of Lone Justice. That band was fronted by the great Maria McKee and both LJ and Maria solo are worth checking out. There's a live version of Maria solo doing a song called Breathe on a late night TV show hosted by saxophonist David Sanborn. It's remarkable. The song is so dramatic and her performance so emotional. I remember seeing her do it live in a club and the tension it created was almost overwhelming. At the end of the song, she turned her back on the audience, stepped to the back of the stage and sort of shuddered and shook herself out.

Saw this notice pop up while commenting on your reaction to the original Led Zepp song! Great idea to react to them back to back! This performance is the only worthy cover this iconic song and it can still, after twelve years, bring tears to my eyes. The original never did that. The original gives you pause, makes you think and contemplate, but never brought tears. Watching Jimmy, Robert and John's reactions is what gets me every time. Their initial trepidation followed by their interest, awe, then joy as the performance progressed. Ann's vocals, Nancy's guitar, the surprise and shock of seeing Jason on his dads drum kit and then all the bowler hats.....honored the music and brought fun memories to what could've otherwise been a somber event.
Great reaction, thanks for the memories.

It still might be a great song and sound good, but it doesn't sound right. This sounds great, a pleasure to hear and watch, plus I love Heart. KCH 2012. I watched it when it aired in December, that yr, specifically for Heart.
Honorees, incl Buddy Guy, Dustin Hoffman, Natalia Makarova, David Letterman, and Zep.
KCH was founded by JFK to honor those who have contributed to American Arts and Culture. Sitting POTUS usually attends, hence the Obama's. There are maybe 5 RnR honorees.
Having seen Heart multiple times, incl touring with Jason Bonham, son of John Bonham, aka Bonzo, LZ drummer, I know Heart covers a lot of LZ in their sets.
John/Robert were very close mates. Knowing about the KCH, Plant extended the invite to Jason, which he declined because he was planning this tribute as a surprise. 😂
I'm glad you watched this version. I think the solo is longer. The missing piece is when they announce this tribute, Jason is introduced 1st and points his sticks directly at Plant, who stands and points back. 😆
The boller hat worn by Jason and the youth choir were Bonzos trademark hat, directly on Jason's head. And of course, the ending, as Jason nods to his Dad.
I can't call this a cover. A TRIBUTE from the Goddesses of Rock honoring their Legends.
This was very therapeutic writing, on such a b*tch day, I thank you for the video and story. 😂✌🏽

This edit missed the introduction of Jason Bonham on the drums. Robert, his godfather and close friend, had invited him to come as his guest and Jason didn't tell him he would be playing, just said thanks but I've got another gig that night. He even hid when the band came backstage before the show. The moment when Jason was introduced, Robert leaps to his feet in delight as he realises he's been fooled! A great moment.
Robert has said that it was only this occasion that made him understand why the song meant so much to millions - previously he had come to despise Stairway as an early work with too much Tolkien-style imagery and effects that were just too easy. Hearing the song performed with such passion and mastery brought home to him what a masterpiece he and Jimmy had written.
I don't think Robert has ever felt that the end of his career is near. At 76 he's still touring in yet another great collab, after the massive success of his collaboration with Alison Krauss, which meant he had to learn a whole new genre (bluegrass) as well as the fun of collecting possible songs for the albums and arranging them with Alison and legendary producer T Bone Burnett. In an archive interview with the three men, Robert was still the one with all the nervous energy, while John Paul Jones revealed a great ability with hilarious one-liners. Worth watching to see how three rock gods have turned into affable elderly English gentlemen, while still keeping some fire in their bellies.

Congratulations on finding the full version, most react to the edited version. The full version has Ann's vocal's higher in the mix, so you can appreciate how great she is, as always. You can hear the rawness in her voice in the last verse as she pushes, so great. The edited version also obviously has "edits", which seems almost sacrilegious to us old fart Zep heads. The guitar solo is chopped up in the edited version; here it's complete (I think?), as it should be since it is so so iconic. The full version also has more people watching moments, like Bonnie Raitt etc, that's fun to see iconic artists appreciating this (Sheila E, Yo Yo Ma, ...). If/when you see Zeppelin live versions, they don't sound like this. Zep was kind of a jam band live, and never used other musicians live, so it was always 4 people, lots of improvisation, some mistakes and some inimitable brilliance.
