In 1986 Prince was the biggest star in Europe. But, he hadn’t performed there since 1981 when he visited Amsterdam, London and Paris with his Dirty Mind Tour. After playing 11 shows in the US Prince finally announced the one thing Europe craved for: concerts in Europe! Was it really happening?
The first show with the ‘extended Revolution’ (or the ‘Counter Revolution’ as Eric Leeds called it) was played on March 3rd, 1986, at First Avenue in Prince’s hometown of Minneapolis. The Parade album hadn’t been released yet, but the set contained a lot of songs off the album. On April 7th, 1985, Prince had announced that he would retire from performing. Within less than a year he was back with a bigger band than ever before and presenting a brand new show.
The recipe for the shows in the US was the same (except for the two New York shows). Shows were announced at the very last minute (at times a day before the actual show). It resulted in the name Hit N Run Tour, even though it was never officially named as such.
The tour was Prince’s first real European tour, followed by his first ever performances in Japan. About 120,000 people witnessed the shows. In Europe it was the start of a lasting affair, whereby Prince increasingly aimed his attention towards Europe, leaving the US behind. The love was completely mutual. Prince’s genius was openly and loudly proclaimed, his record sales were up all over Europe and his music was embraced by all, whereas reactions in the US soured and even were hostile at times.
The last show of the tour also meant the end of The Revolution. On September 9th, 1986, Prince smashed some of his guitars on stage. The band immediately picked up on the meaning and realized an era was about to end. Prince would never perform with The Revolution again.
The Sign O’ The Times Tour was Prince’s first tour following his disbanding of the Revolution in the autumn of 1986. Rehearsals were conducted at his third and last rented warehouse, sited on Washington Avenue in the suburb of Edina, Minnesota.
The Sign O The Times Tour opened just eight months following the Revolution’s final live performance together with Prince. The new backing band comprised: Sheila E who took Bobby Z’s seat on drums; Miko Weaver, member of the Revolution’s extended line-up since 1986 replaced Wendy Melvoin on electric guitar; newcomer Levi Seacer Jr was enlisted in replacement of BrownMark on bass; Revolution’s Matt “Dr” Fink kept his seat on keyboards and was joined by newcomer Boni Boyer. Boyer, Weaver and Seacer were introductions from Sheila’s band in Oakland. The Sign O’ The Times Tour was also Prince’s first to include a dancer in the main line-up, filled by former talent show winner Cat Glover who first met Prince at an LA nightclub and hired as choreographer for Vanity 6. Enlisted to do the same for the Sign O’ The Times Tour, Cat became a fully fledged member of the band in her own right. The neon lit stage set drew inspiration from the theatrical production of Guys And Dolls.
The Lovesexy show is structured like one of those old Warner Bros gangster pictures - in the first half (lucky for us), we see an ‘evil’ Prince, seduced by the sins of the flesh and tempted by drugs, money and criminality, giving him an excuse to dust off Black Album standouts ‘Superfunkicalifragisexy’ and ‘Bob George’.
Then there’s punishment, atonement and spiritual conversion. Yes, y’all, the second half of the show is ‘God stuff’. But if you don’t go along with it, the music is enough of a spiritual experience anyway. Anyway, Prince certainly seems genuinely transported during ‘Anna Stesia’ and ‘I Wish U Heaven’.

Prince is incredible because he had focus on the big and small end of the music industry. He could play and write any style of song. But maybe his best ability was his live playing. A gifted natural at any instrument he touched. His guitar playing and solo ability was top notch. He was musically the complete package, no one else was like him.

Prince live is the best concert experience out there. You will never see/hear a bad show with Prince no matter who's backing him. I was so disappointed he couldn't bring the Purple Rain Tour to Pittsburgh. They only had a couple variations of the stage setup and the Civic Arena didn't work. We were invited to pick from 4 cities so we ended up at Richfield Coliseum Cleveland area. Best show ever! 💜

The stuff you're doing here is setting a really high bar for whatever Netflix or whoever comes up with something for any supposed documentary about the man. I could do with a little less After Effects filters and such but the interviews , the work, and the research you're doing here to tell his story is something I think will be hard to top, no matter who does it. I can tell you're a true fan that's dedicated to telling his story through a variety of lenses, embellished by the people who knew him best and worked with him.
It's REALLY good work that obviously comes from a place of admiration, passion, love, truth, knowledge and fascination for a singular generational talent. As I age, I go down fewer and fewer TH-cam rabbit holes but your stuff keeps me hooked. Nice job.

In 85 they perfomred on SNL, Disney New Year, and some late night show. Again same band. Even During Sheila's concert where Prince came on and they did Love Bizarre TonyToneTone was not there on stage. Were they her touring band for what would have been her 3rd album that she stopped promoting when she joined Prince's band? I will say I think that is Raphael Saadiq in the Hold Me performance video filmed overseas but I do not recognize any other members from TonyToniTone. If you know???? I will be sitting in a cafe waiting for the answer.......

Thanks for sharing, Love IT. Yeah with wendy and lisa prince wasn't going to be put in that position again, them jumping ship on the way to tour. You can't blame him for that "This is a Business ". Plus he couldn't have a love life without them telling susannah who he's with. He had too many cons and not enough pros to keep them. Plus he could replace them in a day. He should of compensated them for all the songs they recorded with him around that time. But prince was a little smudged about people biting the hand that fed them.

I refer to that as the Parade Tour. Some people get technical and want to say that it was the Hit And Run Tour. When I went into MSG, there were shirts and merchandise that literally said "The Parade Tour" on them

Prince introduced everyone the opportunity for change as he evolved and to revolutionize...the Media and critics was so big on Commercializing and record sales instead of him being Prince...Yes his live shows were the biggest...his European tours gave leverage...It is when he come back to the USA (because of a lot of their not accepting change in the music industry; their trumped-up, made up rules) hindering his progress...America did not understand nor wanted to understand nor accept change nor Prince abilities nor did they comprehended Universal MOVEMENT...Prince had messages in his limited interviews...they did not listen...For some reason...Alan Leeds ( as an insider) talked too much, oppionative; revealing too much information to the public...Prince closer circle and homies, even today are not as open as Leeds is...SOME THINGS ARE NOT MEANT TO BE SAID...No wonder Alan got dumped at the nearest opportunity...Wendy and Lisa were, obviously, too controlling for Prince musical vision...Other than that, Prince succeeded his career, made his mark for the changes, and got right on out of this life...LEGENDARY

Well Alan had a reason to be open...Dude was James brown, D'Angelo, Bootsy rubberband, and KISS tour manager....He knows when an artist is making a wrong turn in their career...His experience validates the talking.

Left out of this is the fact that the revolution asked for a mill a year per person. A million a year in the 80s? To not write any songs? Crazy especially knowing years later Prince would be arguing with his label for money he probably couldn't afford to pay them that much.

    • @Sinnik22

How did the tour didn't make any money! When it sold out every stadium??? That doesn't make any sense!! Lol! Sounds like sum hating going on!!

    • @reginafris6822
      @reginafris6822 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

It didn't sell out every stadium in the US, but pretty close. There is a wikipedia site on love sexy tour sales...pretty much everything in Europe sold out, and only a handful of stadiums in the US were short 1k seats, out of say, 10-12k total seats. It's another part of fake Prince history that tons of show venues for Lovesexy were half empty. I think the real issue was the stage and crew were way too ornate/big to turn a profit, which is why the Nude Tour in 1990 was so minimalistic in comparison. I was glad to have seen Lovesexy in NYC, though: it was phenomenal.

Production and Travel cost was so much that killed any profit he would made from the tour. And that not adding the the after party shows he did
