Years ago I shot 18 groundhogs (woodchucks here in upstate NY) one summer in my upper backyard on woods edge with 17HMR using a variety of ammo in a CZ bolt gun. The round was pretty new at the time. Range about 50 yds. Never had an exit wound. Never had one make it to the hole except for one where I pulled the shot. Usually DRT. They all sloshed around when you shook them as the rounds just devastated their innards. I was very impressed with the 17 but haven't used it much since. I went back to my first love...22 mag. I was a teenager when Winchester introduced it and was enamored with it and still am. That 40 grains just packs so much punch. Hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

Not many people have this much experience with both super rimfire rounds. I have two questions for you, sir, and I'd be grateful for any shared wisdom.
I have the 22wmr as well and it's just amazing with how much power it has combined with the fact that you do not need ears. My question is, is the 17HMR louder or is it the same?
Second question: if you're shooting something you'll eat, like a goose or a rabbit (if you ear rabbit like me) would you be ok with the 17hmr or will it be impossible to clean the mean from the fragments?

Since the 17HMR is based on the same case as the 22 Magnum and powder capacity is pretty much the same I would think, muzzle blast and report is pretty much the same. The 17 is accurate enough and rabbits sizeable enough to make head or upper body shots on them so there should be no significant meat loss. I've used it on squirrels a little and it is pretty devastating so head shots only. Rifles aren't allowed here on goose I think so I don't have any experience with them and don't hunt them. Happy hunting.

I got a little keystone cricket in 22 magnum that serves as my small game and hog gun from October through the end of February. Tote that little sucker in a ozark trail hydration backpack that I repurposed by removing the bladder. Fits perfect with the barrel sticking down the drain hole and the stock slightly peaks out the top. Bring along one of those lightweight tripod seats and use a trecking pole hand loop to steady the rifle. Deadly accurate in a total package that weighs like 5 pounds, and doesn't cost much at all. 20 for the pack, 15 for the seat, 10 for the trecking pole. Slick little setup.

@@TheOldFatDadGoober I bet that is an awesome gun to have especially before the leaves have fallen, as the 410 gives a little margin for error on fast moving squirrels or rabbits. I know people who have taken deer at close range with 410 brenneke slugs, so that is also an option. They say to basically get within bow range. Awesome woods survival weapon.

Chances are you'll never get the 17 vmax to go out the back.. it's NOT DESIGNED to.... it's a FRANGIBLE bullet... that's why you saw the SIDES of the second shot (center hit) can BLOW OUT....the bullet literally explodes inside.. into 3 or 4 pcs.... where the solid 22 mag just goes thru. This is why, when taking a prairie dog etc with a head shot.. there is no head left... thats the design of the round. ultra velocity+ frangible.

CCI A17 ammo is supposedly faster- advertised 2650fps with a 17gr ballistic tip. That's what I used in my rimfire cantaloupe video, and it didn't even exit the cantelope because it just completely disintegrated (close range). I have put together a interesting plan over the last few days that has changed here and there. Main concept is a air rifle that will be able to be safely modified to fire .22LR, .22 Mag and .17 HMR, though how I plan on doing this isn't typical. I like the cheap factor, low noise and recoil and how abundant .22lr, but would also like the option to shoot, from the same gun, .22 mag for extra power and .17 HMR for longer shots on small game. I theory crafted and came up with a solid concept, and if it isn't widely well known at that point, i'm going to present a cool firearm. Though I bet if people knew how, there'd be a trace or hint of something online. It's not life changing but it's a solid, cheaper option for some expensive guns atm.

Here's my actual hunting experience with both calibers, the .17 is mostly only good for squirrel sized game, I did manage to take a coyote with a 165 yard headshot though, and that was with the 20gr Hornady xtp bullet, the 17gr bullets are nearly useless against anything larger than a squirrel though, rockchucks were shrugging them off and running to their dens, the .22 lr was actually more effective, the .22 mag is much better suited to larger than squirrel sized game, and those 30gr vmax are not the bullet to use, they also work great for squirrel, for larger critters the 40gr hp or 40gr semi jacketed sp work much better, their both great rounds, but they definitely have their limits and bullet selection is key, especially with the .17

Thanks for watching! A semi auto would be neat. I kind of like the bolt guns when the ammo is expensive though. Keeps me from blowing my budget. 😱

Good vid, bunnies taken with .22 mag need head shots or forget eating them. a 40 GN varmint out of a centerfire at around 3500 on dog food is good

Ok its my turn to be my usual PIA and complain you should be using a 17WSM instead of an HMR🤣🤣🤣 BUT 👍👏 another great review.

The 17hmr is more of a blow it up caliber, penetrate and blow up and have the bullets fragments tear up the insides as much as possible, now im not saying the 22mag cant do that, but it seems that its more on the side of deeper and better penetration, the 17hmr obliterated the dog food cans, and seemed to have done more explosive damage, where the 22mag had better penetration on the pumpkin. I Dont think really is an actual winner here, i think its all up to the shooter and what they plan to shoot and what distance to shoot from, both are great for hunting but if i were to hunt small game for the meat id go with the 22mag, more penetration less explosion, less damaged meat. But for plinking and pest control id go with a 17hmr.

Sorry, I don't get the whole "name of the channel" thing. Seems kind of disingenuous.
Content is first-class, "A" quality. But you should change the name to something that makes sense.

17 hmr will turn a varmints insides into mush faster and at a further distance. its a better rimfire for the actual killing job
