I lived in Japan for a year and loved these sketches. The target isn't Japanese culture, but the white westerners who are basically otaku and believe this tiny subset of Japanese culture is the entire country.

💯 agreed. People who just visit Japan for the Anime isn't seeing the bigger picture. There is fine art, music, literature, great history museums, temples, shrines, food of course, and many more things to appreciate. If I ever go to Japan this year, I won't be the type that goes to Akihabara everyday. If anything, I will visit a different district everday, then on the last day, maybe a multi compute I'd possible.

    • @burtburt2263

Its crazy how the Japanese don't/cant seem to understand that...? While everyone else in the Western world completely understood the context...

I can sense this feeling among those anime fans with alt/punk/gamer outfits. They were so into Japanese stuff, but it's always the case that they don't really know what are the authentic Japanese things. Sometimes I would even be mistaken as a Japanese on British streets, though I'm from China. BTW, the anime conventions in Newcastle upon Tyne (where I used to be in) was really a whole bunch of people like this, and that's why I've never been to any comicon in the UK.

There are many Americans who are big fans of anime and they think they know all about Japanese culture. It's similar to the dancers in Tokyo's Yoyogi Park who dance to old American rock n roll songs.

@@SayuriSaying-- The joke is that they are obsessed and they have a very narrow and distorted understanding of the culture they are attempting to pay homage to. For a "backwards version" -- imagine a Japanese Person who is obsessed with Western Culture to the point that they hate their own culture. Imagine an MTV style show where a Japanese Person verbally trashes Visual Kei bands and says he prefers Linkin Park instead of Dir en grey.... that would be a "Reverse Weaboo." American Weeaboos hate their own culture and they want to be Japanese. A "Reverse Weaboo" would be a Japanese Person who hates their own culture and wants to be American. It goes both ways!

Weeaboos (people who watch a little bit of anime and think that represents the totality of Japanese culture and that they're somehow a part of it) think that you can make something sound Japanese by putting the "duru" at the end because they don't hear the language right and are picking up the する verb ending as "duru." I think it's like how people stumbling through (or mocking) Spanish will put a -o at the end of everything.

You do know these were SNL cast members portraying ridiculous American college students fetishizing J-Pop culture? The sketch writers were well aware the language they use is incorrect. That's part of the humor. The irony is that the joke is on pathetic college students who fetishize other cultures, and not on Japanese culture. The professor character points out how inept the students are in other of these sketches.

I know some people think it is racist, but the point is that they are making fun of a very specific type of American or Westerner who is obsessed with "Japanese Culture" without really knowing much about it other than a few mainstream examples of J Pop and Anime and so if anything it is trying to point out the underlying racism of thinking that a few things in media encompass "Japanese Culture". My brother got to live in Japan for a year as an exhange student and he got to see a lot of real life as one of his host famiiies was an older couple with no children living outside the city. The man was a handy man who would take him to his jobs to show him around and let him meet real people. They would ride everywhere on bikes and and it was a bit more rural so he got to meet people of many ages and different family structures. His other family was in more of the city and had small kids so he got to experience another type of "family life" as well. He loved it there and while he enjoyed things like Anime, he didn't expect every person he met to also be obsessed with Anime. He passed away suddenly at age 29 but until then he kept in touch and would send gifts back and forth with friends he made in Japan and I think if he hadn't passed away he would have gone back again or tried to move there permanently (He was finishing his degree and then working in IT and then had some sudden health problems). He had great memories there of lots of kindness and fun.
