The E3D MegaVolcano, Toolchanger and other shenanigans

  • This is what E3D brought to MRRF2018! We start at news and improvements on E3D's existing lineup, talk about their new barebones motion platform (8:07) and finally check out the new toolchanger (14:44)! If this works out, we'll have a new, open standard for combined FDM printing, laser cutting and marking, inkjet integration and some light finish milling.

    Thomas was effectively just asked if he would be one of the first guys to play with this machine, and he hmms and ahhs and says "if only I had the time, maybe, I'll think about it". Geez Tom, make time! This is an honour, and a way for you to stay on of the top of the 3D printing A-list

    • @zrobotics

      Isn't is better for tom to be honest and upfront. He was being asked if he was willing to be an early beta tester, which is cool, but if he doesn't have the time then e3d would be better served letting someone else test it who can give better feedback.

    I guess I am late to the party but this is such a great video. The E3D is just awesome and enthusiastic and really makes me respect him and the company/products he's selling. Apart from that, as someone doing research into building my first 3D printer, the support for open source information is really just awesome to hear. It blows my mind that there are so many "smaller" companies in the tech industry that provide this information and research to people who want to experience the task of building these systems from whichever point they choose. And in turn the parts I choose for my projects, like my CNC mill prior to this, come from companies that share this ethos wherever possible.

    It's so great to see Dan's excitement and passion for his work. The idea of buying a machine for say £2500 which can automate entire products with vitamins is way beyond hobbyists but is so revolutionary. Commercial machines which can do this are more like $250k. It's so exciting to see the incredible advancements that the 3D printing community is now making. It's kind of reminiscent of the PC community in the mid-eighties. So much was being standardized and open sourced, which, of course, made every purchase virtually obsolete when purchased. But, just look at the results that community eventually accomplished! I see a very similar situation with 3D printing - only with an even faster acceleration curve. The 3D tech advancements to come in next two to five years is almost unimaginable in its scope. WOW!

    • @zrobotics
      @zrobotics 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One thing is, compared to early PCs, it's far easier to upgrade in place. About the only thing on the reprap I built in 2010 that I haven't replaced is the power supply, but I've never had more than one printer. Now granted, I have pulled enough parts off to build another 2 printers, but it's far easier on a hobby budget to only have to upgrade a few components at a time, and still be able to stay relatively up-to-date. The only big single upgrade upgrading the frame to prusa i3mk3 aluminum, but at that point the wiring was such a mess that I would have wanted to tear the whole thing apart anyway.

    • @RonFloyd
      @RonFloyd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My first computer was a TRS-80 Model I. Close to $5,000 in today's dollars - LOL. I pre-ordered one as soon as they were announced. I added and added to it until I bought my first PC clone kit - again, as soon as they were available, and, again, about $5,000 in today's dollars. I upgraded it so many times that, like your 3D experience, little was left of my original build of one floppy drive, B&W monitor, minimum RAM, etc. But, those were some fun days. My cheap phone has more power than it did. :-)
