All of the above users have given me written permission to use their work in my videos, I thank them for this and hope you support them all.
I am not the first to attempt to see how all Pokemon evolve taking inspiration from several Reddit Posts however I always chose different Pokemon or felt a lack of understanding for Pokemon theories and Lore so here is just my thoughts and feeling so nt he matter.
Unless Stated above I do not own any other official artwork images of Pokemon or official Pokemon footage, these are owned by The Pokemon Company, Gamefreak or 4Kids. No copyright infringement is intended and I would love to receive contact from one of these companies to discuss the fair use of their content as while I am sure I am doing everything under fair use, review and parody I would love to have written permission from them.
Please support the official franchise.
Fantastic! Looking forward to this series!
I can’t believe nobody commented here
I wasn’t expecting you here, Lockstin! Great to see you!
I love lockstin and noggin

Welcome to the world of Pokemon, this is the beginning steps in a massive journey for us and I hope more than any time on this channel you will show your love for the content you like (if you like it) by sharing it out. Likes, shares, comments they all mean the world ^_^
Bird Keeper Toby cool can’t wait for rest
the bird keeper toby comment was posted 2hours ago? the video came out 1 minute ago
gibberish ed Mindblown 🤯
Bird Keeper Toby do you plan on hypothesising that ditto was actually first? Being this sort of primordial ooze?
This is so good
Birds didn't just evolve from dinosaurs, they ARE dinosaurs! Which is just one of many reasons why they're so freaking cool!
This video was super AWESOME! Combining real life science and pokemon is just... perfection!!!
Elite Trainer Lin love your videos
Abu-bakr Patel same
also, dinosaurs are *not* reptiles. dinosaurs are their own thing apart from reptiles and not as closely related as many people think.
Moonlit Meadow Dinosaurs ARE reptiles
"Dinosaurs" are a type of Archosaur, which is a group of *reptile* including Pterosaurs, Crocodilians, Dinosaurs, Modern Birds, and potentially Plesiosaurs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archosaur
Elite Trainer Lin if you think birds ARE dinosaurs then you are a single celled organism lmao
WHY WAS SLOBRO WEARING A COOL LEATHER JACKET
BRO!
Wtf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cuz he thtooopiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid
cause it is cool
This was beyond fantasic. Many have talked about pokemon facts and lore, but none at the level of Toby. Keep at it
Thank you so much
Wow, you upped your production value since the last time I tuned in. Good on you Toby
Reggie Smith it really does look like one of his specials!!!
Can you next time do a a quick zoom in from bottom to top of the whole tree at the end of the video
This turned out fantastically. Thanks so much for producing such an accurate and stimulating video on Pokémon science - it's much needed these days. It was a pleasure working with you on this and I can't wait to see the rest of it! ^_^
Tecnically, The Bulbasaur line are more based on Synapsids, which are a group of animals that includes mammals and every animal more closely related to mammals than to other living amniotes(Which include Birds, Reptiles and Egg laying mammals).
Thank you appreciated. I'll look into this to verify and if this is true which there is every possibility 1 or 2 creatures might be wrong then there may well be an amendment episode if things like this do pop up
you're welcome
Yes
Shouldn't Aerodactyl be a Pterodactyl or Pteranodon not a Wyvern? Also you can't convert oxygen into methane since there is no O in CH4, they might be converting carbon dioxide or just carbon but not oxygen ;)
Yeah apologies I messed up on my chemistry there ^_^
It could be from the breaking down of glucose in its cells, the oxygen goes into the process, breaks down the glucose, then the carbon dioxide that is formed from the process is positioned at the end of the electron transport chain, where the leftover hydrogen atoms could then form another reaction with it to produce the methane, and as a bonus an extra oxygen molecule for use in more cellular respiration.
Bird Keeper Toby chemistree?
Yes, but I can almost guarantee that oxygen is used in the conversion I done fashion.
Maybe dragons in Pokémon are archosaurs?
Absolutely impressed. One of the best videos I've seen. Super excited for the rest of the series. Keep doing what you're doing
Thank you :D
A pokemon phylogeny tree, this is going to be awesome!
Shouldn't Ninetales have been mentioned with Arcanine and the Eeveelutions?
Incidentally, where WAS Ninetales?
Nope, for Ninetails you will have to wait and see ^_^
There are multiple hundreds of pokemon. If he mentioned EVERY one this vid would probably be hours
Excellent video.
I'd have classed Aerodactyl as a Pterosaur, myself, but I can certainly see an argument for Draconis evolving from Pterosaurs in the pokemon world, rather than getting wiped out in their equivalent of the KT event as is believed to have happened to ours.
Small note, but the species "bulbasaurus" is technically not a lizard, it is a synapsin. This is the group more commonly called the "mammal-like reptiles", but really they are much more closely related to us as mammals than diapsids like lizards and dinosaurs.
Also Bulbasaurus is a Dicynodont that lived in the Permian and not the 3 periods in which Dinosaurs were dominating the world. The problem with calling it a dinosaur because it has "saur" in it's name is that many other animals that aren't dinosaurs have had "saur" or saurus" in their name, such as the well known Basilosaurus, an early whale. "Sauros" coming from the greek word for reptile, well obviously means reptile and not Dinosaur. Dinosaur is a combination of Deinos and Sauros creating Dinosaur. "deinos" meaning Terrible.
Deleted my previous comment for the sake of accuracy, since I misspoke. Although we call them reptiles, they are neither true reptiles nor true mammals. "Synapsid" is really just the best term we have for them.
Also the Bulbasaur line have ears, wich is something only mammals haves.
that was one of your best video ever. Man those 19 minutes just flew away I'm very hyped for the next one ^^
This is the series Ash should have watched before he left to go on his journey. Also was Bulbasaur named Bulbasaur cause of its bulbous nose? I always thought it's because it has a bulb on it's back? Also well done, as a fellow occasional Poketuber I can see how much work went into this.
It is, The real creature Bulbasurus is known for it's bulbus nose
OHHHHH. My bad
I'm good. Thanks though
@@BirdKeeperToby but it was stated by the authors that the scientific name being similar to the pokemon may not be a coincide (they even put a bush behind the dinosaur on the reconstruction illustration!)
I agree with most of it other than one small line you mentioned in passing: "humans didn't evolve from Pokemon". The lore indicates otherwise. Pokemon is an RPG where all legends are true and Canalave library says that humans and Pokemon were once indistinguishable. This explains why there are people with strange inborn abilities like psychics, channelers, and dragon tamers. Their DNA contains rare genetic traits that are dying out in the human population such as the ability to use telekinesis, predict the future, see ghosts, sense aura, or talk to dragons.
I’m just stunned by how well this video was made! I can only imagine the amount of research this took! This was very informative and so intricate; I’m curious to see how the other PKMN are connected. I love ur ambition. I’m excited for what’s next!👍🏽👍🏽
Thank you ^_^
Bird Keeper Toby You’re welcome. You deserve it.
Awesome video Toby. Honestly, if you were my teacher for Science, I'd have loved it. You have this for making anything sounds really interesting. I'm greatly looking forward to the rest of this series.
This is *SO* good
Thank you ^_^
Here from Twitch! :)
This is so amazing, Toby. It's actually making me nostalgic for AP Bio, which I never thought I'd say 😂
Great video, but I feel that if its preevolution has gills and fins, Gyarados is more likely to be a fish, having gills and fins-both of which never evolved convergently in mythological dragons. It is also theorized that Dragonite is based on a giant salamander with wings, due to its affinity with water and its younger tadpole stages.
As a biotech major I approve of this series! But there are a few facts I believe would supplement your theory. If I were you, I would talk about the symbiosis and co-evolution of early insects with the arrival of land plants in the cretacious. Most plant-based Pokemon are similar to angiosperms (flowering plants) and these organisms were only able to flourish because there were land organsims to spread there seeds; as opposed to the more ancient ferns who were able to reproduce and spread their offspring via rain, currents, and other types of moving water.
In summary, some Pokemon might of only evolved due to a niche created by previous Pokemon. Anyways, great job with this episode! I look forward to the rest of the series ^^
This is SO cool, I can totally see all of the work that you put into this series and it paid off so well!! This is amazing and I can't wait for the other episodes!
I'm getting anxiety just THINKING about the amount of editing for this one.
Dude, you have the best video ideas. You were once just one of my favorite PokeTuber, you've become one of my favorite TH-camrs period over the last year or so. Great work, man.
IRL, there are different groups of marine mammals that aren't at all closely related to each other. Whales and dolphins (cetacea) are closely related to ungulates, as you mentioned, but other marine mammals are not. Seals and sea lions (pinnipedia) are more closely related to carnivorans like dogs and bears. Then there are the sea cows (sirenia) which are part of a weird group called Afrotheria that includes elephants and aardvarks. There are also otters which mostly live in fresh water but there are sea otters too, so I'll include them. Those are also in carnivorans, but in a slightly different branch to seals. Instead, their closest relatives are animals like badgers, ferrets and weasels.
So, bringing that back around to pokemon, we have the following. There's the wailord line which is most closely related to hippowdon. Then there's the slowpoke line which you identified as being a sirenian, so would be related to donphan. There is also dewgong which despite being named for the dugong actually looks much more like a seal, which is unsurprising given that it's the evolved form of seel. Also from the seal family is the spheal/sealeo/walrein line and the popplio/brionne/primarina. So, walrein, dewgong and primarina would be closely related to each other, with their next closest relative maybe being the group including ursaring, snorlax and pangoro. Finally, there's samurott and its line which are otters, and buizel and floatzel which are described as "sea weasels". There aren't any sea weasels in our world, but hey, pokemon evolution happened differently to our evolution. So samurott and floatzel are related to each other, with their closest land-based relative being weavile.
And I think that's all the marine mammal pokemon. Phew.
Otters and seals are carnivorans. Whales and manatees are ungulates.
After watching your video and additionally reading through some comments, I've got to say I'm really excited for this series to continue! Any logical/factual errors were brought to your attention in a civil manner, you received due praise, and the video had a calm and professional tone that was very refreshing. Personally, the theory that Charizard's body contains methane is a new one for me and I think it makes a lot of sense. That's it from me, thanks for the video and good luck with the rest of the series!
TOBYYYYYY
Hi! Loved the video. I am a biologist and I enjoyed your efforts, it is very clear you did your homework! That been said there were some misconceptions. I was going to corrected them, but I realized this isn’t a science channel 🤣 keep the good work! You are great!!
Love the video Toby! One slight correction though: Nidoqueen's shiny form is not the same color as nidoking, all of both nidoran lines turn their gender-pair's color aside Nidoqueen. Nidoqueen turns green for some reason
Additionally, the idea of Nidoqueen being artificial grows less plausible when the fact that female rhinos don't breed in captivity is taken into consideration.
Yo this was honestly so fascinating. Biology and Pokémon are literally my two favorite things to talk about. In love with all of this. I just wish you could put the next one out sooner than two weeks lol
When a video about evolution become a video Revolution :D awesome job! It is actually information I can use for school! So proud of you!
You sure made a... transformation on your channel
Awh hehe thanks Mirteh
Please don’t just use the video for school, it was great but had a few misconceptions. It is great for you tô understand, but use a book for actual homework :)
This video is so well done! Toby, the quality and character of this video is phenomenal! Your script had some flow, you knew your topics well and you were engaging with your information and graphics (assets from your friends and supporters). Superb work, can't wait for more of it!
Oh, different videos for Ghosts, Legendaries and man-made Pokemon? NOW IM REALLY INTERESTED!
You'll noticed I missed a lot of Kanto Pokemon here ^_^ Much more to come :D
Like rock pokemon?
being a biology major, this video makes me really happy. There are a few changes that I would make to your tree on the dragon branch, but the rest is absolutely phenomenal!
Me-thane😂😂. Funny how things are said differently in different parts of the world. Very enjoyable vid btw❤️
It's the UK pronunciation.
Dude, I have a newfound respect for you man, I've always had an interest in how the pokemon world evolved and the comparisons, so this is frickin awesome. :D cant wait to see the rest
Bird Keeper Toby, his hair is a nest.
Bae Arthur a beautiful one too.
Watching twitch adds to support this series was time very well spent. I'm so excited to see what the rest of this series has in store. Such a great video!
I love how he just walks onto the camera in a white screen
Incredible job Toby! I’ve seen plenty of videos that discuss the same topics, but none at this level of production. It’s incredible to see someone who cares so much about what they do that they always want to improve. Very excited for the next episode!
Love the video....but can I ask something? Are we going to be able to buy a copy of the graphic? I would LOVE to have a poster of this, maybe once the series is done so nothing is spoiled? ^_^
Wenn it's more filled out ^_^
Lovely ^_^ Can't wait!
I didn't know I needed this until today, but now I need more.
You missed something with Aerodactyl. You could have mentioned the possibility it having the Dragon/Flying typing before it went extinct.
And yes, the series has finally started. Very informative and entertaining.
I am assuming those aren't weekly, since a lot of effort and research go into it.
Every other week, the series has been in production for a while ^_^
Noyvern will have its moment in here, I believe
Good. You don't make us wait too long, although i would have understood if we would have gotten one episode a month.
@Albert
Obviously, but not yet. In gen 6. Noivern is the closest relative Aerodactyl has.
Got to say I honestly loved this video looked ridiculously professional, I liked the angle you came from too and I think this will make for a fantastic series, keep it up
THIS!!!!! OMG I love this thank you Toby for doing this!!!!!! Could you possibly make a pdf or give out the chart when you're done with the whole thing so we could study it more and do like fanmon on the common ancestors in each branch?
You'll have to wait and see :P
This is a really cool project. As a biologist, I love phylogenetic trees.
One thing I do see you stumbling into, in the future, is the breeding capabilities of Pokémon. They are unlike real-world breeding, where higher organisms can only mate within the same genus at most.
In Pokémon, Raichu can breed with Seedot, for instance. Hope you guys touch on the breeding aspects as well.
Please tell me you will release a poster of this when its finished, cause i want that in my room
100%
I think I'd actually buy that....and I never buy anything.
Your original evolution video was probably one of my favorites from you, and just the other day i was hoping you would have a follow up with every pokemon! Really excited for this series
In real life birds aren’t actually descended from dinosaurs. They are actually dinosaurs themselves according to biologists, with many dinosaurs like archaeopteryx being able to fly.
On another note, pterodactyls aren’t dinosaurs, only flying reptiles who lived in the same time period.
It’s 100% worth me mentioning this in future videos
True. Also we are fish and invertebrates is not a real group, but to be honest this is a bit confusing 🤣
I still dont understand how "birds are dinosaurs" birds weren't even around back then, so for someone to claim that they arent a descendant, but the actual thing is simply the stupidest thing ive ever heard. For real. You idiots walk outside and tell someone that birds are dinosaurs and see how many people laugh in your face. Even crocs and alligators are sooooo much closer to dinosaurs than any other species ever. But they still arent dinos. Dinosaurs are gone. There is not a single dinosaur on the planet. Not a reptile or bird. If birds are dinosaurs then you are a single celled organism.
I wanted to turn on notifications and then saw that i was not subscribed... I have been watching your videos for years and was not subscribed, i am an idiot. Loved the vid! Keep it going!!
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR LIKE EVER!!!!!
haha thank you so much :D
I have been looking for exactly this all over the internet since your last evolution video. I’m so glad to see such a wonderful follow up. Thanks Toby ^^
Maybe mew with it being complex was more of a bottle-necking event where all live that lead to mew became extinct. I also thought that aerodactyl should be like the pterosaurs and represent aerial reptiles. But other than my opinions I love it!!! Absolutely amazing what you are doing!!!!
Loved it and I can't even imagine how much editing you had to do. You're really one of my favourite Poketubers. Definitely here for the next one in the series and your future content.
I feel bad correcting you here, Toby, but Bulbasaurus was not a dinosaur. It was a Synapsid, or mammal like reptile, which makes it more closely related to us than to dinosaurs. It's a common mistake, but not every animal that ends in saurus is a dinosaur.
( copy and pasted reply form comment above) Thank you appreciated. I'll look into this to verify and if this is true which there is every possibility 1 or 2 creatures might be wrong then there may well be an amendment episode if things like this do pop up
eyyyyyy i made the same comment too XD
At least it's not quite as egregious as "basilosaurus", which isn't even cold-blooded (it's actually a whale o_0)
Furthermore, in most games you can only find Dratini in water which makes it seem like it would fit more as a Water Type, like Gyarados, and Dragonair is oftentimes shown Flying around.
Professor Toby of the Poketube Region!
Thank you so much ^_^
I've been waiting for this for so long!! Thank you Toby!
The majority of Pokemon evolutions are incomplete metamorphosis right?? Like krabby and kingler
This is a fantastic series, and I’ve never been more satisfied to be following you, seeing you making this kind of content! Carry on Toby, you’re doing great!
all 807? how will the alien & ultra beasts go down then?
Theory: Shiny Heatran and Durant are dying Heatran and Durant. As we know, Heatran is filled with magma which burst out at some point. Now the shiny form. The metal glows a dulled gold, implying some sort of radioactive-thingy is emanating from it/it is getting warmer. The eyes have gone bad, which is why they are purple (this isnt a human) and the magma which supports it is letting out energy at a fiercer rate. Now for durant. I think durant is related to Heatran - they both have genders and there are many of each. There is magma inside durant too, but it was never harnessed because of how ᗪᑌᖇᗩᗷᒪE the steel is. However, it is also brittle. Shiny durant is the metal finally heating fast, once again giving off the glow, and the fires inside are heating to the point where they have been surrounded by a greenish hue, shining out of durant's concentrated eyes. The reason this was never realised was because pokémon are known to have very long lifespans (unless of course you go putting out newly-born charmanders' tail fires) and so it is rare to witness a durant, or heatran especially because it is legendary so lives long, that is dying, and people assume it is the shiny form. I hope i convince you..
I don't buy the Dragonite / Gyarados swap. Gyarados is a Chinese dragon while Dragonite is a western dragon. Magikarp should evolve into a Chinese dragon as with the underlying mythology rather than a Western one. Chinese dragons are all gods of respective bodies of water that bring rain when the Jade Emperor calls upon them to do so (look up Ao Guang the East Sea Dragon King or read Journey to the West). Western dragons on the other hand are evil and are usually slain by a knight in shining armor or the likes to save a princess trapped in a castle (or some other related plot line).
PeterLiuIsBeast jade makes me feel weird when I’m around it. Idk why
PeterLiuIsBeast
Dragonball was based after a Journey To The West
Yes... And so are many things. The Gold and SIlver Brothers from Naruto for instance.
if that's the case, it's interesting that gyrados is typically violent and dragonite just likes to hang out.
Not to mention that Magikarp and Gyarados both share similar design motifs: the whiskers and crown-fins.
Easily one of your best videos ever, im sooo excited for the rest
P.S. i think you forgot ninetales
I havn't forgotten about a single pokemon, Ninetails isn't in this episode there are 11 more to come ^_^
but wouldnt it be in the mamalia category in gen 1
6:42 thats not a dinosaur its a mammal like reptile
It's a stem-mammal
Yes I’m so excited to see this. I’m sure that it’ll be so much better than your first evolution video.
I learned this stuff just a few weeks ago in science. Well just the evolution, not pokemon
Same here
Dude you put such a high level of production into your videos, i dont know if anyone works as hard as you do in making these videos. I think you deserve more subs man.
On a side note, i know its two differant kinds of poketubers, but you should collab with trainertips, i feel that you both are honest and hard working youtubers, and i think you could both benifit from a colab
Oh this could be fun to watch
Hey there it is!! It looks amazing! Thanks for having me on board!
Thank you for being part of it ^_^
good vid
Why does this comment have no replies?
This is absolutely amazing Toby. You've done so much research and can't wait to learn more about pokemon ancestry from this series. Keep up the hard work
I've been waiting for this :P
Very well done, Toby! I'm looking forward to the rest of the series! :D
Yey thank you ^_^
Bulbasaurus wasn't a dinosaur and it was partially named after bulbasaur
But I still loved the video! Keep it up Toby, excited for johto
Thank you, necessary changes and more on the way ^_^
Wow Toby this was so amazing. I hope you're super proud of it because I'm super proud of you. Can't wait for part 2 ^_^
Omg toby loved my last comment itx a dreem come true xxxx
Good work man. Your videos are always getting better and better.
Thank you so much ^_^
THANK YOUU!!!!!
I adore this explanation! you did a fantastic job Tobi! It really is awesome to get so much in-depth information about pokemon, my favorite has to be slow poke! it's real life counter part is even more awesome!! Thank you for doing this series can't wait for the next vid!
If your a pokemon professer........what starters do you give out
One day :')
Pika pal Probably bird pokémon.
Imagine a region where every pokémon is also a flying type,or just looks like a bird pfft
Imagine a Region in the sky! That would be so awesome >////< and more than fitting for this idea
This is super cool, and such an ambitious and interesting idea! I’ve always loved exploring the biology and real life connections to Pokémon, because the biology elements in Pokémon are what helped my biology-loving mom and I enjoy certain aspects of Pokémon together!
Regardless, I’m loving this series so far, it’s super fun, interesting, and I was hooked the whole time! Looking forward to what comes next! ^_^
Finally!!!
I really enjoyed this video, Toby ! it’s so interesting to watch since I haven’t seen any other TH-camr doing something like this. looking forward to part two already ! :))
Really at the bottom of the tree should be unknown cause unknown created arceus the Pokémon god
You'll have to wait and see ^_^
My guess is unown take part in creating the legendary pokemon?
Oh boy I'm gonna love watching the rest of this series at work. :D Well done, very descriptive and informative. Great take on Pokemon as an entire series.
Finally
I've researched all of this myself, finding it a highly interesting topic. My findings placed Cubone and Marowak in the Therasopod area, being more like dinosaurs: the bones they wear being an homage to their predecessors, the fossils. I loved how you found out where Slowpoke fit on the phylogenetic tree. Truly well done, from both an entertainment and educational view.
Yasss
I love this, and I'm so pumped to watch the next episodes!
Just a fun fact: Males actually CAN lactate, they just need to produce more prolactin, which usually happens if the functions of the pituitary gland or the hypothalamus gland are interrupted (since they usually prohibit the release of prolactin), which can be caused by several health conditions. This can also occur with non-pregnant women or females, and is often caused by side-effects of medication such as Depo-Provera (which stops menstruation).
Lets get to a mil views
Thank you for the love and support ^_^
This is absolutely great! I can’t wait for more episodes! 💖
powkeymawn
YES! It's finally here! I will love this series. Thank you for making it!
Also, I feel like Deoxys will play an important role in this for some reason.
8th woo hoo
Omg 12 parts!?!? I’ve never been so excited!!! Keep going Toby!!!
Something I've noticed, you need better audio equipment to record your voice. Maybe a clip-on mic. Other than that, congratulations on this video! It looks really great!
This was really great. Nice job Toby!
