A testament to how well they do their job is that people don't "notice" .. I just seems so real in the movie viewers get caught up in it.. Trust me.. if it was done poorly . .people would notice . : )
Mike Karschti It was the worst thing about the movie. Looked fake and took me right out of it. Especially the rigid eye blinks and nostril flairs. Nothing beats CG.
So sad to see that there where not more animatronics, the ones they used looked absolutely fantastic and while the cgi in the movie was great, some scenes would have looked better with animatronics.
That's a misconception. CGI can be incredibly expensive! You'd be surprised just how many people and man hours goes into believable CGI. So it's not fair to say that practical effects aren't used more because they're expensive. The real reason is that producers don't believe that they're believable, which of course, is wrong.
This is such a beautiful piece of work. I started to cry the moment I saw the first featurette for this movie that said the word "animatronic." it's the one of the fine arts of film making that Jurassic Park will never be the same without. God bless Stan Winston and the Legacy he left behind!

deraj nitram Yup, but sadly as the movie found out, you can ruin that certain realness that the animatronics bring by going over them with CGI. It happened in the prequel for The Thing. They had some truly awesome and creepy animatronics, but they then cgi-ed over them giving enough disconnect to take away the unnerving factor the raw animatronics had.
Well seeing how incredibly well it's doing at the box office there will certainly be a sequel and it will have a bigger budget, so hopefully that means more animatronics.
5:12 How come the puppet looks way more realistic here than in the movie? maybe because of that awful blue filter that they used in the film and diminished the original color of the skin?
J Jo Its the way they raise the contrast and add a blue colour tint. This makes it easier for the brain to detect whats real or not. This is also why people are thinking the CGI looks more fake in some scenes, even though the actual models are much more detailed. Makes me wonder why they went with this look.
Dinobot2468 Personally, I HATED the blue filter! Jurassic franchise is not Jurassic (and not so real) without the "brown filter"! I hope they come back with the "brown filter", more animatronics and less CGI in the sequel!
Filipe de Lima Santos From what i know they didn't use a color filter in JP, this JW looked fake from start to end to me, and this animatronic scene looked very bad in the movie. I just saw a fake looking puppet while in this video i am amazed at how complex it actually was. I guess that in JP the animatronic know how was at it's peak, and a big part of it got lost when CGI started replacing it.
The Apatosaurus scene in the movie almost had me crying. the way they made the animal look like it was in such deep pain combined with a sad version of the JP theme song in the background made me feel extremly emotional and nostalgic at the same time.

You guys did a beautiful job! That scene was when I got most emotional and mostly because of how real the Apatosaurus looked. Amazing job! And thanks for all your hard work, it really made the movie experience worthwhile for the viewers :)
This was a massive challenge and took ages to process and make and combined with today's technology. Meanwhile the 10ft animatronic T-Rex that was built over 30 years ago looks better
I'm not that impressed by this work. This looks to be the quality of an amusement park ride. And I'm not trying to be negative for no reason. Jurassic Park has had better animatronic puppets in past movies.
Jurassic Park series is my all time favorite!!!! I can still remember those movies gave my nightmares when I was a child, and I went to the Jurassic World movie on the first day, it just brought back so much memories
I can't deny that apatosaurus scene was amazing, the seamless blend between CGI and Animatronic are beautiful, thats what this age of film needed. I guess if the director explore this technique more or even used it more (not relying too much on CGI, more on practical), we can have a masterpiece of a movie, well visually. CGI for complicated movement, Animatronic to react with the actor, hey, I guess its pretty Much what they had done for the first Jurassic Park lol. Also, I think the scene would look better without that "blue" color grading, I think nature and animal scene need natural color grading (looks just the way our eyes see), but thats nitpicking o course. Good job you guys at Legacy Effect!
Its a shame some of these effects went to waste with the abundance of CGI. I LOVED Jurassic World, but it did need some more practical effects, because the best effects in the film were the practical ones! I was disappointed that i didnt get the classic shot of a REAL animatronic T.Rex. Theres always a chance for its sequel to use more!
ThatGuyFromBritain nope with CGI it is still easier to alter something if you don't like how it came out. There'll probably be less puppets in the sequels as CGI is just too way more convenient. I don't like it either but practical is dead.
Thank you so much for uploading the creation of the Apatosaurus head so quickly! Although i was a little sad that it's the only animatronic dinosaur on screen, i was stunned the first seconds i saw it. All the subtleties in the movement and the animation itself were simply incredible. Hands down, this whole scene is the most moving dinosaur-scene i've seen since the ill-triceratops in Jurassic Park. Thank you so much Legacy Effects!
***** Sure some practical stuff like eggs, bones and teeth. But a animatronic dinosaur? The only other non-cgi thing i noticed was the back of a Velociraptor head in a very short shot.
dilworth6113 I though the same thing when i saw the close-ups on the raptors' heads. Still loved this movie, despite some flaws in the characters in my opinion. And yeah, too much cgi.. but nicely done
TheMetfan81 The contracted the original T-Rex pupil without CGI, not to mention they did the same thing on Jabba the Hutt. This is clearly do-able, it's a matter of laziness on the studio's behalf. I believe Treverrow wanted more and the studio didn't give him the time or money for it. Or possibly he took the easy way out, but I'm not sure.
What the f are you on about? It looked great! Man, really tired of this new hipster trend of hating on CGI. None of you even know the amount of effort that goes into CGI effects and shots. Smh.
Anirudh Menon Hating CGI is not a hipster trend. What made the first movie great was that it relied more on its story, and when it had dinosaurs, 90% of the time the dinosaurs were practical. Movies now are all about action and the fantastical because it's so easy to make. There aren't many big movies that aren't just full blown CGI because we're used to seeing shit like Transformers or San Andreas or, now, Jurassic World.
I know you guys did a marquette of the Indominus Rex, but was there ever an animatronic for it? Khan talked about working with or seeing the I-Rex head. Was that true? Or is Indominus the first full CG villain dinosaur in this franchise?
I wasn't insulting the CGI itself. It was incredible. What's unfortunate is that they had to use CGI to achieve an effect that could've easily been an animatronic.
BloodyFlowerFilms Well easily indeed, but Masrani's actor said that there was an animatronic of the I-rex supposed to be on the set but apparently something happened to it and it never made it
Joseph Boulter My biggest gripe with CGI is the actors having to act in front of green screens, they have nothing to interact with, nothing to feed them emotion, that's why big Hollywood movies suck. Notice in this clip the actors react to the Apatosaurus moving because it's a real object that they can touch and feel. You can't do that with CGI. That's why actors always have this stupid blank look on their face when they're acting with CGI.
Honestly, I don't hate CGI, and I don't a lot of people who gripe about this movie do either. I LOVE what CGI can do. There are some things that CGI can do that animatronics can't, at least realistically (that scene with the Pterodons attacking citizens is a great example). The problem that many people have is that we're far too reliant on it. There are some things that CGI, at least right now in the 2010s, can't get across the same way a physical creation could. CGI can very easily date a film unless it's used VERY effectively (like in Jurassic Park or Gravity). I believe they made the right choice to create an Apatosaurus head with a CGI body (though color correction has been unfairly abused and overused in this movie as well -_-). However the opening with the Velociraptor's hatching out of the eggs could've been done with simple animatronics as well. They did it in the first one and, heck, they could even improve it on top of that with modern robotic technology. To me, the CGI wasn't used that well in this film, which would've been fine if there wasn't as overused as much. When I think of Jurassic Park as a franchise, I think of awe-inspiring creations and the harmonious ballet between two different but effective methods of creating creatures that can not only terrify, but can gain admiration as well. And hey, maybe the fault IS in the color correction department and the effects were fine prior to that. I don't know. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the movie and I was super happy to see it. 8)
Joseph Boulter I have to disagree man. I think CGI more often than not looks completely simulated and not real at all. I find motion in CGI can make or break how real it looks. I have to say though, CGI is absolutely astounding in small doses. My criticism is tends to be when directors use CGI for whole set-pieces and scenes.
CGI doesn't look real. Practical Effects would always win! Look at Lord of the Rings vs The Hobbit. Lord of the Rings looked way more realistic because they used a lot more practical effects then the Hobbit that used mostly CGI. J.J. Abrams who is directed the new Star Wars movie is using more practical effects than CGI because of how fake CGI looks. CGI is a great tool, but you can't use it to much like these films tend to do now and days.
I can not believe this.i'm speechless. This is like like so so ummmmmmmmmm just so cool.this is so.ooooo awesome.i can not stop thinking of these videos of how to make dinosaurs.dinosaur movies make me happy.it feels like they came back to life.
Was it just me, or did the lighting of the scene somewhat ruined the look of the animatronic? It also felt like it was slightly cgi-touched in post-production...
I loved the movie, but one of my only gripes was that there was an over reliance on CGI, those raptor puppets look phenomenal, I wish they had made it in... The Apatosaurus was incredible
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I can't stop watching it. I wonder if it would be possible for John Rosengrant to see any of my dinosaurs and let me know what he thinks. I've been making them since I was 13 when I watched JP for the first time.
that moment when you realize that Apatosaurus (the dinosaur in this scene) is the same species of dinosaur that was little foot in the land before time
@@Irland_Dolin Because I realized there is a lot of stuff in this world which was more important than just buying a dinosaur costume and playing with it
It is a shame that the number of animatronics has been reduced to one in a JP movie. I hated all the CG and was waiting for your effects guys, but left the cinema disappointed. I'm just wondering when the age of overused CGI is going to end. I hope soon. Keep up the great work!
Mate Jako Studios now in days dont want pratical effects, but more CGI, because it saves movie. they even said in the video that the director had to fight back so that they could include animatronics, at least the apatosaur
Mate Jako I actually counter all your agruments I think practicals will come back, take this movie, the push in Star Wars The Force Awakens, I think other studios will see they dont have to use Cji for all and there may be a balance in the future
AmazinChannel given the type movies i assume your talking about, if they used practical effects they wouldn't be good practical effects. bad or obvious effects aren't bad because they use a certain technique, they're bad because the filmmakers are lazy.
Shining Cat Productions i'm talking about movies with a budget of millions of dollars, they could easily hire good professionals to do scenary and visual effects, thats what makes me angry, when simples things like scenary elements made in cgi
Un freaking believable! These guys earn every penny - so gald to see animatronics still being used. At 4:44 they should have rubbed some dirt on it to get some grit on it too. Top job
you guys could have build an animatronic hybrid dinosaurus, that worked in 1993, you guys could have made animatronic raptors, but noooo, you guys just wanted to waisted all on a dying apatausaurus
Jurassic Park worked well because it had an equal mix of the two, so it was a lot harder to get used to the CG and animatronic effects. CG is very good and very convincing when used in moderation. But the problem is that so many movies rely on it now, that we've just gotten used to it and it's easier to tell apart what's CG and what's real. Movies desperately need to go back to practical effects. Not replace CG entirely, but also not rely on it.
I didnt like that scene at all, It felt dumbed down like it was forcibly played to be emotional. "and heres the scene, feel sorry for the animal, orchestra do your job" fuck this. the only thing that looked real and they blew it.

Amazing. What hard work just for a small scene... Hats off to all....
Dinobot2468 I 100% agree with you it seemed fake the rest of the time.
Dinobot2468 They'll screw the sequel with even more CGI...
Md Ray
Allah forbid it. Once again Am thinking Allah Please don't let them swear up the Movie.
+Dinobot2468 The film is fine as is.
ThatGuyFromBritain nope with CGI it is still easier to alter something if you don't like how it came out. There'll probably be less puppets in the sequels as CGI is just too way more convenient. I don't like it either but practical is dead.
Quit complaining about the CGI!! The movie was great and these people worked so hard to make this movie as best and fast as they could!!
So realistic, i like when they still use animatronics(no pun intended) and not mostly CG.
Raptor head should have got an animatronic eye! The CGI eye spoiled the scene
They needed the eye to contract, the pupil
dilworth6113 I though the same thing when i saw the close-ups on the raptors' heads.
I love dinosaurs!
I know you guys did a marquette of the Indominus Rex, but was there ever an animatronic for it? Khan talked about working with or seeing the I-Rex head. Was that true? Or is Indominus the first full CG villain dinosaur in this franchise?
BloodyFlowerFilms Apparently there was an animatronic of the I-rex but it never made it to the set for unknown reasons
Unfortunately that was CGI.
BloodyFlowerFilms Unfortunately? That was good enough CGI to confuse it with an animatronic
I wasn't insulting the CGI itself. It was incredible. What's unfortunate is that they had to use CGI to achieve an effect that
could've easily been an animatronic.
BloodyFlowerFilms Well easily indeed, but Masrani's actor said that there was an animatronic of the I-rex supposed to be on the set but apparently something happened to it and it never made it
I love both CGI and animatronics in Jurassic Park/World ^^ I don't get the hate for CGI, it's truly amazing what you can do with it!
Don't get me wrong I love animatronics but .... Why does everyone hate cgi ? It looks more real and less jarring
Josh said it perfectly! I didn't read his comment till after I wrote mine. But he said it perfectly!
Yeah i agree it the way the scene was shot was kinda odd
This Film were revolutionary! I love them a lot still these days!!
I loved the movie, but one of my only gripes was that there was an over reliance on CGI, those raptor puppets look phenomenal, I wish they had made it in... The Apatosaurus was incredible
There's so many different kinds of talents that go into making this one animatronic! Amazing!
Okay, I'm going to see it again this weekend.

Even though I know it's a fake dinosaur head on the ground I felt over whelmed by how sad and relatable its ordeal was.
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I can't stop watching it. I wonder if it would be possible for John Rosengrant to see any of my dinosaurs and let me know what he thinks. I've been making them since I was 13 when I watched JP for the first time.
wow
Come on John! Go and see his dinosaur XDD
Thanks for your support Emma :)
oh man, did you make them yourself? great stuff
Even with all the CGI there is now, this is one art from in cenima that is absolutely perfected.
that moment when you realize that Apatosaurus (the dinosaur in this scene) is the same species of dinosaur that was little foot in the land before time
Damn straight
The one practical effect in the entire film..bravo

Nice
Jurassic World made me cry when all the good dinosaurs died. Great movie though. Thanks!!!

Diverp Found It!
In the 90's they would have built the entire animatronics body like from 1993.
I WANT ONE
+IVAN god damn who doesn't :)
@@RGamePlayXtreme
Well i don't
@@thelovelyfans119 Why?
@@Irland_Dolin
Because I realized there is a lot of stuff in this world which was more important than just buying a dinosaur costume and playing with it
@@thelovelyfans119 😆
The end makes me want to cry because of the beauty.
this is why you should never coat props with CGI
This group is awesome these guys can make a whole realistic model of a dinosaur that moves
This is my favorite dinosaur and I'm so happy they put so much work into it. It was really beautiful.
I'd enjoy the practical effects community a lot more if 90% of it wasn't bitching about CGI.
Shining Cat Productions the problem is that even scenes that could easily be made in real life are being made in fucking cgi
Top job
the funny thing is when I watched the movie the dying Apatosaurus is the only part I felt looked fake....

Halo Unto Dawn, I think. It's already out
Mysterion Halo Unto Dawn? Lol it's Forward Unto Dawn.
Hat's off to the artists 💕
you guys could have build an animatronic hybrid dinosaurus, that worked in 1993, you guys could have made animatronic raptors, but noooo, you guys just wanted to waisted all on a dying apatausaurus

It's movies like these that has made a soft spot in my heart for America!
Still your number one fan!
CGI sucks. Bring back animatronics

Kudos to all who work behind the scene
I didnt like that scene at all, It felt dumbed down like it was forcibly played to be emotional.
"and heres the scene, feel sorry for the animal, orchestra do your job"
fuck this. the only thing that looked real and they blew it.
Yes, I agree on that it was a little bit too Disney.

I agree, and also I did not even think it looked that real.. Not compared to the animatronics used in JP.
For example, it was too glossy, and moved wierd.
