    Great review of this piece of kit Robert. Not being a wildlife photographer, I'm not sure I would have a need for this, but I can see where it would be great for wildlife or even possibly sports photography, especially for the price. But never mind that, as always, I came here for the images and there were some really good ones here. That in-flight image of the Heron (?) at 6:08 was absolutely amazing, as well as the gull at 6:32. Looking forward to the remainder of the California series, or the woodland video! Hope you are doing well, have a great week over there!

      Cheers Paul, could also be good for certain astro, such as photographing the moon. Maybe even the space shuttle launches, if you were using a long lens. As for the images, cheers mate, although I wasn't totally happy with them. Everything was very distant, and I didn't have my teleconvertor, so they're heavily cropped and I feel they're lacking a little resolution. I was mainly getting a feel for the gimbal head though, so I can concentrate more on the shots next time. As always, thanks for watching. 😊

    I actually looked into getting one of these a few years back. But read the reviews and, as you mentioned in the video, found several mentioning the failure of the mechanisms and maintenance required with bearings and lubrication etc, so decided against it.....although as you rightly mention, you have to consider the price point - it's never going to be perfect in every way for £80 (or more like £50 when I was looking....inflation!). Solid review mate, some good shots too.

    • @Robert-Bishop
      @Robert-Bishop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of what I read recommended making the adjustments from new. I presume Neewer have improved the gimbal since then, as this one worked perfectly. I guess time will tell how durable it is. Thanks for watching mate. 😊

    Although not an expert, I believe that the height adjustment is so that the camera+lens to stay at the angle you leave them and stop them from rotating. If it is too high or low it will swing upwards or downwards. The video gimbals work on the same principle.

    • @Robert-Bishop
      @Robert-Bishop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the input. It seemed to work for me aligned with the lens body, so I suppose the adjustment option is there to cater for different size lenses to stop them swinging, as you say. Cheers for watching. 😊

    I've had the carbon fibre version of this head for about four years now and it's as good as any of the fancy branded ones costing four or five times as much that I've had the opportunity to try out. Only issue I now have is that I just can't balance it with my new much lighter Sony A7iii mirrorless with a Sony 200-600 lens in front of it - it's all just too front heavy no matter how I adjust the foot - but that's not the head's fault! Oh, and it doesn't suffer from any shakeability when the pivot tensioner is loosened off.

    • @Robert-Bishop
      @Robert-Bishop  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to hear your experience with it - certainly worth the money. You're going to have to attach some ballasts to that Sony! Thanks for watching. 😊

    I've just bought one off eBay UK (16.7.23) New, £26 posted 😊Also people mentioning they can be stiff. Well, there a couple of vids showing how to take them apart. There are no bearings in the gimble. The problem is that they use a very thick grease. Works perfect in hot climates but stiff in cold climates. All they did was remove the original grease , and replace it with Silicon grease, the same used on outboard motors.

    • @Robert-Bishop
      @Robert-Bishop  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard of people replacing the grease, but personally I found it worked fine without having to do that. Sounds like you got a bargain though. Thanks for watching. 😊

      @@danram69 It would need to be a specially designed L bracket i think, because the mount plate is the wrong direction for a typical L bracket. It would mean your camera and lens would be angled at 90 degrees to the gimbal head.

    For someone that occasionally does a bit of bird or sport photography then that looks a half decent bit of kit for the money. I'm sure if you were spending every weekend in nature shooting wildlife you might want to spend a bit more. But for those of us on a tight budget that would probably do the job just fine.

    • @Robert-Bishop
      @Robert-Bishop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The quality is very decent Andrew. I think it could easily be twice the price and still be worth it. I was using it again last night to get some shots of the moon and it worked really well in a locked position, looking upwards - very stable and handles the weight of the Sigma 150-600 better than my ball head. Cheers for watching mate. 😊

    Does anyone know how to actually PUT IT ON the tripod???

    • @Robert-Bishop
      @Robert-Bishop  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Depends on your tripod. The gimbal screws onto a 1/4 inch thread. On my tripod I can unscrew my ball-head attachment, revealing the screw, but it may be different on yours. Alternatively, if you have an arca Swiss type clamp on your tripod, you may be able to get an attachment with a screw, that fits into the clamp.

    Hi Robert - nice video and interestingly I have the same tripod. I have been to the Dearne Valley reserve several times - but never to try photograph birds (only watching with binoculars and a spotting scope). In your experience would you say that you need at least a 600mm lens at a reserve like this? I guess with your Nikon 500 that means the Sigma is giving you a 900mm equivalent?

    • @Robert-Bishop
      @Robert-Bishop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Tim. I do find that I often struggle with reach at Old Moor, and all my better shots are when the birds venture a little closer to the hides. Unfortunately most of the more interesting birds tend to keep their distance though. The Sandpiper for example is lacking detail due to the distance, even at 600mm. I do have a 1.4x teleconvertor, but the narrower aperture is not always worth the extra reach. And yes, indeed, the field of view is equivalent to roughly 900mm on the D500. Thanks for watching. 😊
