Ive been playing this game since i was 6 years old. Im 28 now and i still play it almost on a daily basis. Still learning new things i didnt know. It is by far the best racing game ever made
I loved GT2 as a child, but when I got my hands the Japanese version, I fell back in love with the game. The completely original soundtrack and the lack of misplaced cars and just enough English to get through the menus.
The one thing that always stood out to me with this game was the car selection. So many unique cars, large variation with many daily use cars and the option to convert them to race cars. Spent countless hours on this back in the day. Many of the cars (especially race cars) were unknown to many of us, but ended up being interesting to drive and learn about. To a degree the same can be said about Sports car gt 1999 for the ps1 (version i played). It had few cars in comparison but many I've never heard of and the first one for me that had the iconic Panoz Esperante GTR-1 and the unique Saleen Mustang RRR(might be based on the s351).
24 years later, and I still think this is the ultimate racing sim. It offers a level of accessibility and variety that no other ever had. Long live GT2!
I still play GT2 cause it is playable on phones and tablets and low powered devices like android tv boxes. I play it on my firestick... I'd play GT4 if it were possible for me.... But I noticed the physics on GT4 are way different than in GT2.
License tests may feel arbitrary or annoying to experienced players, but i found it a very practical learning experience in gt4 which was my first track racing game. The texts on the side were very helpful detailing different driving techniques the game wishes to teach with each test. Even the braking tests showed how long it takes a car to reach a standstill, leaving you in a better position to judge turn 1 braking points during races if one paid attention. Its brilliant.
was born in 99 and remember playing the first gt while the hands were too small for the controller, lol. gt2 was a massive step up much more stuff to do, not so hard tests, way more cars. i think this and 4 are the best in the series for these reasons. (personally 3 had more fun physics for a ps2 game while 4 was more "realisitc")
Fantastic video! I'm 36 and I remember getting this game when I was 13 having eagerly been awaiting it all winter. I never thought 23 years on I'd still have an interest and love for this game along with like minded folk. Keep up the great work and I await future videos!
That's a nice memory to share! There's lots of us who were raised by these games and we like to pay tribute to them. I'll always have something on the works, good to have you on board.
My other racing game favorites for the PS1 are both Rollcage and Wipeout 2097 and Wipeout 3 Special Edition. Having a perfect lap classic Wipeout feels so good.
I played this game for the first time in 2018 when I got into emulation since I never owned a console, and I totally agree. This game still holds up and stands out, and gotta be one of the best racing games out there.
@@YellowbirdYT I mean, just the modding scene alone is crazy. I'm pretty sure we are getting to the point where the game will get recompiled to run natively on PC. Maybe replacing textures with AI generated ones like done in RTX Remix or something.

Honestly my true love, one of the best, if not THE BEST GT ever... If you admit the "the vintage taste" in the judgement... Proceeding by GT 2... I never liked GT3.
Fun fact: When Ridge Racer Type 4 released, Playstation Mag boasted how it was the best racing game on the system, even better than Gran Turismo 1. A quote from the review can be seen on the back of every R4 copy, and I firmly believe that review is part of why Polyphony went balls-to-the-wall when they made this game.
When I tell people that I love the new shape VW Beetle and they look at me like I either have no taste or am insane, I tell them one thing. "You never played GT2 did you?". A new VW Beetle, tuned up to high heavens, with a body kit, a rear spoiler, and an engine tune up to break the laws of physics, beating 911's with it, doing hill climbs in it....just the fact that it was a Beetle competing with supercars........that was up there with sex. A supercar mauling VW Beetle, I didn't know whether to laugh or be blown away. Miss this game terribly. I have loved those cars ever since. I see them on the road occasionally and it all comes back. People don't understand where my love for them comes from or even why I love them at all. Nobody understands the lonely perfection of my GT2 sessions.
@@Whyteeford GT4 surely does a few things better, but at the same time I feel it misses out on some. Still, it's hard to argue with the fact GT4 is the gold standard of the franchise.
@@YellowbirdYT what makes GT4 the best honestly is the presentation. The way you don't have to go through clunky menus... everything is on what seems like a world map. Everything just flows and transitions so much better in GT4. The used car show rooms that change day by day...finding absolute GEMS in those showrooms, chance to find 0mile cars. GT4 just FEELS like a completely polished game. 1 thing I do LOVE, and miss about GT2, which no one ever talks about...is the damage to car performance...which I always enable. Forces people to not just play bumper cars, and adds a certain level of realism to the racing
@@YellowbirdYT in fairness to myself, most of my hours were as a kid, and I just grabbed the escudo and never changed the tires. Just sliding around on the rims for the last 80 laps lol
Gran Turismo 2 was the first racing game I really was immersed into and made it fun to learn about how cars work and function! Then how to tweak the specs right to get an advantage over the other cars. Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 expanded my knowledge much more a few years later with even more specific details on how the specs effect the car!
I received this game right on time for Christmas '99. And yes, it is by far the nicest car game, the precise mixture of arcade-y fun and simulation masochism. 10/10.
I had this game on ps 1, the best racing game I've played. I would have loved to try the other gran turismo games (not the first one, I had it also on ps1)
It truly is, and A-spec is the best version, I wish I could set it up on my phone with duckstation, but even at 4x resolution it’s awesome to have on my phone and my steam deck.
Gran Turismo 2 was one of the best GT games and one of my favorite games I've loved! Without licensing issues, we would 've had more cars such as more JGTC cars, as well as Paganis.
But tbh, Gran Turismo 2 wasn't so polished back in the day due from the Christmas schedule. as a result, There are some bugs and glitches that appeared in the game
This game its toooooo HARD from tha beggining to tha end, its frustrating play 1 map 200 times yo win tha race, that is for all maps. If you dont know about cars you are Very fckt, like me, I dont know to configure a car a all that, its overwelming
I wouldn't call it perfect, you can tell they went at it head over heels to get it out in time. Couple of bugs, lots of inaccuracies, could've used a little more polish. Some polygon errors on a lot of car models (mirrors or exhausts being visible through the car body, though that might just be a limitation of the PS1 being pushed to the limit), a lot of incorrect spec sheets, sometimes even spelling errors in car names, extremely difficult time limits for gold licenses but clumsy AI makes the actual races rather easy especially if you make full use of the HP limits or disregard the categories whenever possible (which is most of the time actually because outside of the manufacturer events the game only checks for power, drivetrain layout and aspiration). But it's potentially as close to perfect as we've ever gotten, is an amazing achievement for its time and technical boundaries, and I'd give my left nut for something like an open source PC port with graphical fixes, content fixes, more tuning (engine swaps), difficulty settings, more competent AI and network multiplayer. I've been playing this game at least occasionally for over 20 years, and if we got the port I've just described I could play it for over 20 years more.
It surely has its shortcomings, given it was rushed and tech was a limiting factor. However, it is a good layout on how other racing games should tackle their careers and car rosters.
everyone praises this game, I just never really enjoy it. it may be hardcore and top of the notch, but I just wanna play racing game for quick fun, for that purpose the NFS is good enough.
Don't get me wrong but I feel like this channel would have better success with someone else narrating these well written videos. I am having difficulty understanding your accent.
GT 1 and 2 are racing games not racing sims , but they are pretty fun. Neither have accurate car driving. They were just more realistic than Mario kart and Outrun. GT3 was the first one I would call a racing sim. But even then 4 was the first one where it was actually difficult to play it like a video game. But you can still feather the gas and brake like a maniac to force the car to do video game stuff. GT 5 is a good game but by then nobody cared about sim racing anymore because Forza made arcade driving fun again. GT sport was probably gonna be 7 but it sucked so they just called it sports to manage expectations. GT7 doesn't work on my PS4 because Sony and polyphony are a bunch of fuckers and won't let me play offline. Gt6 was probably the best in the franchise at doing what was advertised but by then it was over for the PS3. GT 1 pointless GT 2 good arcade driving game GT 3 GT 2 but plays on PS2 pointless GT 4 decent sim racer GT 5 Forza clone GT 6 Forza clone with more content than 5 GT sport decent driving game GT7 internet connection test disguised as a video game. GT 4 is the most accurate one that has enough cars and is cheap and easily available to pick up and play. If you go back farther than gt4 it's for nostalgia not real driving.
2 has some of the worst track selection ever where you have to suffer through Tahiti road, super speedway, and a few other clunkers. I don’t even like Laguna Seca at all. Apricot hill and Rome night are the only new tracks that I like. And they removed special stage 11. Plus the constant starting and stopping ruins the flow.
With the 60fps patch, I'd find it impossible to go back. Maybe with a nice CRT but even then I'd rather play with the emulator on a CRT. 30fps is just outdated and jarring.
