  • In this camera test videos it's the Xperia 5 ii Vs Note 20 Ultra Vs Huawei Mate 40 Pro. This one is unlike any other comparisons I've made before for two reasons. One is the fact that I'll be using the Sony Photo Pro app for all the photos on the Xperia 5ii... and two is the fact I shot most of this video at the (RAF) Royal Air Force Museum in London. Check it out... It's an interesting one.

Its more like understanding about low light capabilities. When u have brighter images such as Mate 40 Pro, well preserved highlights & higher dynamic range with minimal artifacts, u got more flexibility to play with.
Why do u think Sony camera such as A7iiiS brighter in low light than A7iii or smaller A6400 then? Huawei camera phone can extend to 15 steps of dynamic range, which is better than most APSC camera & almost what a full frame sensor can achieve. To me, thats incredible.

Nice review. Actually this is the true story of the Sony phones, lovely, reliable and unique. But when is about the night or darker shots or just for the moments when you don't have the time to tweak the camera settings there are a few other phones that are better. I was waiting since 2013 to get a new phone from Sony and i stayed with them till last year. I was very close to buy the 5ii this year, but the lack of wireless charging and the weak front camera change my mind . Still with every year they're getting closer to what i want, and when my actual s10e will be changed, the Sony is going to come back to me.
Ps. I'm also a Sony mirrorless shooter and i also resonate with another reviews that point out that if you have a stand alone camera you really don't want to complicate your life with the phone camera app all the time. Just want a simple and reliable auto mode with all the goodies that you count on.

So in short Xperia 5 ii is a fraud . You buy xperia 5 ii expecting to get the best camera ever and a "little" Pixel 4 has better camera i saw in other video.. Mate 40 Pro hands down the dynamic range king. Lots of flexibility can be played around. Note 20 Ultra got weird white balance. Xperia 5ii weaker of the 3. With Mate u can easily play the DR as dark as Xperia does, but Xperia will not get what Mate can achieve, even after editing or using RAW. By point-and-shoot camera system, hands down to the Mate.
Hurmm u played around with Photo Pro on Sony, but never on the other two, where it can as well using Pro Mode.
    Anyway great comparison as always!

Huawei is a clear winner here for many reasons. No competition here. First few minutes of review is terrible quality by the way - filmed by Sony selfie camera. I'd say it is the worst front camera on a flagship phone for years. Overall Sony's approach looks quite funny to me. Just imagine, you're buying a brand new, fast, sporty Lexus with.... a tool box in the boot. And manufacturer/seller tells you: "Here it is your brand new & shiny car. It is really great but automatic transmission isn't as good as on other cars so we advise you to switch to manual. We know you will get used to it and will certainly gonna like it anyway :). Also our suspension is a bit rough and unbalanced so please find a toolbox in the boot. You gonna need it :). Overall it is a true premium car with great, unique design. Please love it and... just don't complain. Oh, sure you won't because you are a fan."

  • @MrMrEvin
    @MrMrEvin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sony for colour accuracy, Huawei for clarity and Samsung for best point and shoot. For the night modes, both Samsung and Huawei are amazing in general and for how fast you can just take a photo. I do like the Sony night shots as personally, it captures true night time, as you see it. I always prefer the camera to see what I'm seeing. They really need to add a point and shoot night mode, as to get a good shot you pretty much have to have a tripod for any night shots on the Sony which can be a pain in the arse.
If I didn't care too much about photography, I'd choose the Note 20 ultra hands down. I do like to play around with photography myself so Sony looks very appealing to me at the end of the day.
Edit: Goddam that front-facing camera on the Sony is shit. It's like they didn't even try. But to be fair to Sony, the Alpha division (Who came in to fix the camera setup) wouldn't have experience with small front-facing cameras as they only ever worked on high-end Alpha series cameras. I expect them to have done some more testing to get it right on the Mark 3, they can only go up from here.

Thanks for sharing the comparisons! as upgrading from the (still fabulous!) Huawei Mate 20 Pro, I've been trying to figure out if there are any camera phones that are as good as the Huawei Mate 40 Pro but don't involve sucking up the loss of Google etc... interesting to see the images side by side, although I would've liked to know in the air museum which colours were more realistic as in the videos you had the other 2 showing oranges & the Huawei definite yellows....from using the Mate 20 Pro, I am well aware that you sometimes have to change the direction of shooting to colour-correct etc, so that info would be useful. I use a DSLR & Mirrorless Canon for amateur photography & personally have been pretty blown away by the capabilities of the Mate 20 Pro, especially for "Super Macro" shots, as with the Mate 40 Pro the 20 also seems the same for Night shots & most of the time makes a shot appear a different time of day it lifts the light so much. The Sony Xperia 5II would be a contender if it had a night mode & the Galaxy Note wasn't too shabby, but I still think you can't beat Huawei for smartphone photography, as much as it pains me as I'd love to be able to upgrade with a phone that has Google eughhh ..... great vid though! :D I'm not sure how long you'd had the Huawei for, but from using the 20 there would definitely be alot more you could get out of that camera than what you showed there, so not sure if that's the same for the Galaxy as well....I'm guessing from your comments that you use the Sony more as you said you'd taken longer to take a few of the shots with it etc.... certainly on my Huawei you can manually change the aperture, take Portrait mode shots & get a much better macro than what you showed (eg alot closer etc).... look forward to seeing more videos

With the Sony you get to use a grey/white card to set a target white balance. It is not that hard and very quick. No need for fiddling time. That is what we do with the mirrorless and dslrs. Sony is the only phones that allow you to do this. Further no need for night mode. If you shoot raw you can open up the shadows which is clearly what the Huawei and Samsung has done. With raw files we can choose the amount of editing it is not imposed on us.

I bought the pixel 5 for my wife and whenever we need to take a photo I'm always asking for her pixel 5 to take the shot... I guess that may answer your question.

I think that for the night shot with the smooth sky, the mate 40 is just doing that in post. the light around the street lamp is strangely darker than the sky so it didn't know what do do there and made a weird dark circle. So maybe one thing would be to see how well the photos can be edited after.
Also for these. If the sony doesn't have a night mode could you take the odd picture with it on auto to show how dark the actual scenes are to phones?

I have the Sony 1ii. I spent ages searching through various reviews and nearly opted for the Sony Xperia 5ii, then came across a X1ii for £720, so snapped it up. I'll be absolutely honest and admit that if the Pro 40 had used the Android platform I would have almost certainly have brought that instead.
Of the 3 cameras, there Sony 5ii will be the cheapest. Not having a night mode is as bit of a shame, but I wouldn't use b it that often, and I have a Panasonic 4/3rds camera and decent Olympus lens which I use when I'm serious about taking photos. Fairly comfortable about using the pro-mode on the Sony and like having the RAW option.
I appreciate the separate and dedicated camera button and like the option to fiddle about with the lighting etc, post-shot.
The longer format makes it perfect for smaller hands and the split screen option means that you can easily run two apps.
Love this phone. And don't forget: the Note is easily twice the price and the Pro40 doesn't run Android.

A more balanced camera test was to use pro app in all of them because all of the devices can do a pro shot.Otherwise if you were to use auto on all 3 devices it was clear that Sony was by far the last in this competition.Dont get me wrong, I love Sony and I want them to succed but they need to make better auto and it is not the only "problem" when you pay a great amount of money on a device. When you ask a lot of money for smartphone and you can t check most of the boxes , hmmm there is a problem.I mean not the best battery, not the best charging(by far), not the best overall camera(auto/night mode), no in house theme creator, etc.I dont think that better refresh rate is must have when you sacrifice the battery and resolution but a camera that you can use fast and with results it is a must have.

Sorry, they all need to be Auto or all Pro - not a fair test or comparison surely??

Your comparisons was really rushed and definitely no in-depth explanation. I was really confused on your explanation and on focusing the points all the time. The edit is good but please do refer other techs reviewers on youtube and get better on points explanation. 👍👍

Not a fair comparison. Its only fair when you use pro mode for all 3

I know. I did think about that...I decided to go with the Photo Pro app instead due to a lot of requests to test it out.
